Shopaholics and food lovers are often spoilt for choice in Singapore. Despite being a small island, Singapore offers a diverse range of dining and shopping experiences. Such vivacity is further enhanced by the efforts of local and international companies in creating unique experiences, strong partnerships and iconic events. Over the years, we have witnessed several milestones made by French lifestyle brands on Singapore’s dining and retail scene. One example is the world’s only “floating” Louis Vuitton Island Maison. This spectacular infrastructure combines art, retail and architecture into an immersive shopping experience. Also, in May 2013, Chanel unveiled their 2013/14 Cruise Collection at the charming black-and-white bungalow at the Loewen Cluster. When it comes to gastronomy, French brands continue to find distinctive ways to whet our appetite. Singapore is home to a repertoire of French restaurants from Restaurant de Joël Robuchon and L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, both fine dining restaurants serving French haute cuisine, to pâtisseries such as Paul Bakery. These are just some examples of French dining and retail culture that have created a splash in Singapore. Many more are featured in this French Shopping and Dining Guide in Singapore. We are happy to support the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore in their efforts to share the wonderful stories behind some of the French lifestyle brands in Singapore through this guide. We hope you will enjoy this very insightful and informative guidebook.

Many seaside resorts in France are named after precious or semi-precious stones: the Opal Coast, Alabaster Coast, Emerald Coast, Jade Coast, Amethyst Coast, Ruby Coast or Azure Coast. The first to acquire such a nickname was the Côte d’Azur in 1887.

There are more than 3 million people practising an artisan craft in France, guaranteeing the country’s highquality and national expertise. The certification includes more than 150 occupations.

Unlike other sparkling wines, true champagne has to have gotten its bubbles by undergoing the fermentation process twice: once in barrels and again in bottles.

Several projects of significant importance have been carried out by the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (France’s Best Craftsmen), among which the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Paris’s nickname, the “City of Lights,” refers not to its night lights but to the Age of Enlightenment, an intellectual and cultural movement of the late 17th and early 18th century.

The members of the Comité Colbert – 78 French luxury houses and 14 French cultural institutions – are all grounded in French craftsmanship, which they constantly renew through creation. Large or small, centuries-old or more recently established, these houses stand united within the Comité Colbert to represent French taste in the world and bring you dreams. Singapore is a good example. All of our houses are present there: as you make your way through the city, you will enjoy discovering the many luxury sectors that contribute to the French art de vivre: couture and fashion, crystal, publishing, interior decoration, faïence and porcelain, silver and bronze, leather goods, gold and precious materials, fragrances and wine & spirits... not to mention French gastronomy, which the Comité Colbert celebrated last July when three stars of French cuisine – Alain Ducasse, Joël Robuchon and Guy Savoy – joined our association. Singapore is like a jewellery case where our houses can display all of the scintillating facets of their heritage and innovations that harmonise their timeless style with the latest trends. In this city of perpetual motion, whose citizens are concerned about the future of the planet, our members express their shared values and their identity, in perfect step with their time. Let me invite you on a journey to the heart of French culture... right here in Singapore!

The Maison Boucheron would not be Boucheron without the genius of its founder: Frédéric Boucheron. When he created the Maison in 1858, he asserted himself as a man with an enlightened and bold spirit, a true visionary with expertise of the jeweller’s art. An adventurer, he went straight to the foot of mines to acquire the most beautiful stones. He was also a pioneer of style and technique whose bold inventions – the question-mark necklace, the gold drapé, and the multiple-wear jewels – were rapidly rewarded at Universal Exhibitions. He was a man in constant search of excellence and innovation.

Wigs were introduced in the 17th century, when King Louis XIII of France, who had let his own hair grow long, began to bald prematurely at the age of 23.

French manicure was created in the United States in 1975 to evoque French elegance.

The word perfume comes from the Latin word perfume, or “through smoke.” This refers to the earliest perfumes, which were incense-based and made from spices and herbs such as coriander.

From the 17th century and throughout the 18th century, both men and women in France wore conspicuous cosmetics. Class differenciation was more important than gender differenciation and cosmetics marked one as aristocratic and à la mode. Make-up was adopted by those hoping to rise in social status and to become fashionable. Also, makeup was not intended to look natural and was, in fact, called “paint.”

Perfumed gloves were highly fashionable during the 16th century.

What exactly is ‘French beauty’? Blogger and writer Renee Lorentzen shares her thoughts on the topic as well as tips on starting your beauty journey. When I think of French Beauty, I think prestige, luxury and most of all, effortless glamour. Pick up any beauty product made in France and you will find a simple, uncomplicated yet beautifully designed product. Likewise, French women possess this in their beauty regime: they look groomed and polished, yet not overly done up; they do not hide behind makeup, nor are they outrageous with their hairstyles. They simply enhance what they were born with. This French Women beauty philosophy of "you, only better" is something I personally live by. The French woman doesn't spend a lot of time on makeup because she knows that the foundation – the skin – is a better investment. A deep cleanser is the first and most important skincare product to invest in – this will remove all makeup, oil, and debris that accumulate on your face throughout the day. It will also cleanse your skin, resulting in a smooth, flawless complexion. Afterward, a simple, no-fuss moisturiser is best, and one with SPF 15 (minimum) is vital for the day to protect from sun damage. For make-up, the French woman only needs a little bit of tinted moisturiser, mascara, brown eye shadow, a light pink blush and a lip balm is all that is needed for a simple, fresh look. There is no hiding behind your makeup, nor your hair. A simple, mid-length bob haircut is popular with French women because it's one of the hairstyles that suits women of all ages and face shapes and is universally flattering. One cannot think French beauty and not also think of all the incredible perfumes born in Grasse, a region in France known for its perfumery. A fragrance tells stories and secrets. With one whiff of your fragrance, someone can already tell your personality – or better, fall in love. The following pages will give you a guide to the products, brands and services that all convey the French beauty philosophy. These French beauty brands are not only the top of the beauty game in France, but the world too. Experiment with them all and remember that the goal is to enhance your natural beauty – c'est chic!

Using a L'OCCITANE product is always a moment of well-being and sensory delight.

L’OCCITANE’s story begins in Provence in 1976. With nothing but an alembic, a small truck and a solid knowledge of plants, Olivier Baussan, aged 23, distils rosemary essential oil to sell at local markets of Provence. Hence, the L’OCCITANE journey begins. Since its founding, L'OCCITANE has offered high quality beauty products and fragrances, developed following the principles of phytotherapy and aromatherapy. Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean cultures, Olivier Baussan developed textures and fragrances that were natural and authentic, effective and deliciously appealing.

L'OCCITANE has nurtured simple values from the very beginning: authenticity, respect and “sensoriality”. This, more than a philosophy, is a commitment that, over the years, has influenced many of important decisions. It has guided L’OCCITANE’s actions and choices along a twofold desire to preserve and to pass on. This is what gives the brand its life force, its meaning and its purpose.

Enhancing beauty with technology and touch.

Payot was created by Nadia Gregoria-Payot who became one of the first female doctors in 1913. Upon discovering beauty salons in New York in 1917, Dr Payot decided to devote herself to women’s beauty. She then met someone who would change her life: the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. The discrepancy between the youthfulness of the dancer’s body and the marks of tiredness on her face led her to create not only skin care products but also facial gymnastics and a specific application method for consumers at home. In 1925, Dr Payot opened her first beauty institute on rue Richepanse in Paris. She trained future beauty therapists and lavished her valuable advice on them in the areas of facial exercises and beauty products.

Yet another period began in 1947 when Dr Payot created the first beauty treatment school. She became a pioneer in the service of women’s beauty and well-being with the extremely avant-garde Medi-spa approach. Dr Payot’s medical approach always focused on developing comfortable, safe and gentle formulas by selecting the best ingredients and by using the appropriate massage techniques. Herbs, plants and minerals are the focus of research at Payot Laboratories. The top spas in the world place their trust in Payot: the brand is present in 7,000 points of sale in 50 countries.

Beauty according to Yves Saint Laurent is always linked to a presence, a beating heart, the absolute power of seduction.

“I needed to give a face to the woman I dress, Yves Saint Laurent. 1978 was the year Yves Saint Laurent stepped into the world of beauty with his make-up collection: signature gold cases and colours with incredible pigments for the ultimate woman, a woman who brushes taboos aside, who is capable of inventing her life in colours that match the full spectrum of her feelings.

?

France’s first department store was Le Bon Marché in Paris, founded by Aristide Boucicaut in 1838.

Although jewels nowadays are more commonly worn by women, it is men who first started to wear them, as indicators of their status in society and to denote victory in battles.

Around the 16th century, ladies started exchanging fashion dolls known as Parisiennes: these dressed-up figurines were used to display clothing samples being considered by the royal court. By the 1800s, women far from Paris were ordering French fashion dolls to be sent by mail so that local tailors and dressmakers could re-create royal clothing styles.

Founded by journalist Jean Donneau de Visé in 1672, the Mercure galant was the first gazette to report on the fashion world. It played a pivotal role in the dissemination of news about fashion, luxury goods, etiquette and court life under Louis XIV to the provinces and abroad.

Why do French women always look so fabulously stylish? Sharon Lim, Editor-in-Chief of ELLE Singapore, explores the essence of French chic. Think of French chic, and some of the greatest fashion designers come to mind: Coco Chanel, of course, in her little black dress or tweed pantsuit with strings of pearls; Dior’s post-war New Look silhouette with the strong shoulders, wasp waist and full skirts; and, of course, Yves Saint Laurent’s assertive Le Smoking tuxedo, menswear adapted for a woman’s curves. That these by-now classic styles are updated every fashion season by fashion houses all over the world is a testament to how powerful French chic is — which, by the way, actually refers to Parisian chic. Paris, after all, is one of the world’s fashion capitals. But what is French chic, exactly? We invariably bring up je ne sais quoi, and how true: the phrase means “I don’t know what” in French. French chic is understated style, it’s elegance with a large dose of nonchalance, and it’s bold but never flamboyant — not even with a leopard print. Especially not with a leopard print! “Parisian style has turned into a myth,” says French journalist and personal stylist Isabelle Thomas, co-author of Paris Street Style: A Guide to Effortless Chic (Abrams) with photographer Frédérique Veysset. “It is not as stereotyped as people think. Fashion is indeed at the core of French culture, but we don’t always go out on the streets wearing a beret or a pair of cigarette pants like a Saint Laurent model. And we don’t all have the right figure for it!” French style, adds Thomas, is about personal style rather than slavishly following trends: “It’s all about being in sync with oneself.” This is achieved through playing with timeless pieces, the crux of any chic French woman’s wardrobe, mixed with unexpected accessories. Last but not least, French chic is all about looking naturelle. From Inès de la Fressange to Carine Roitfeld, there’s something slightly “undone” about the stylish French woman: She is not perfectly put together (even if she took ages to get ready). The difference between naturelle nonchalance and sloppiness? Practice, practice, practice. Intimidated? Don’t be. Ultimately, dressing up — or down — should be fun. The French just do it more fabulously.

Sharon Lim Editor-in-Chief ELLE Singapore 63

Petit Bateau, for everyone and forever.

Established by Pierre Valton in 1893, Petit Bateau is an iconic French children’s fashion brand and a favourite with the young and old alike internationally. Valton famously created the first underpants when he decided to cut off the legs of a pair of long johns that his son was wearing to provide him greater comfort. These underpants were launched in 1918. The name "Petit Bateau" was apparently chosen two years later, when Valton heard his son singing the French nursery rhyme Maman les p'tits bateaux (“Mommy, do the little boats...”).

Indeed, the brand has become a benchmark of multigenerational style for babies, children, men and women around the world. Petit Bateau is a staple for baby wear and a perfect fit for Singapore’s humid climate while the infant collection makes for a special gift for new-borns. Mothers who want something for themselves can also find simple, classic daywear. Petit Bateau has a wide array of fun colours and styles, and it is trendy for all ages.

Now 120 years old, Petit Bateau still upholds its high-quality standards and specific requirements to maintain the softness and comfort so associated with the brand’s heritage and history. 79

Vanessa Bruno launched her own brand at the age of 24 in 1996 after a career in modelling and small jobs in Ateliers. The two-piece swimsuit, or "bikini,” was invented in 1946 by two French designers, Jacques Heim and Louis Reard (above). It was first sold in a beach shop in Cannes.

The concept of jean clothing was born in Nîmes in the LanguedocRoussillon region, wherefrom it was imported by Levi Strauss to California to make tough clothes for gold diggers. Barthelemy Thimonnier, a tailor by trade, worked tirelessly his whole life, perfecting his couseuse, the sewing machine. Even though other inventors had been working on the idea, it was Thimonnier's chain-stitching machine that provided the invention’s first practical application.

French seven-time Grand Slam tennis champion René Lacoste designed a white, short-sleeved, loosely-knit piqué cotton shirt with a flat, protruding collar, a buttoned placket, and a longer shirt-tail in back than in front (known today as a "tennis tail"). Thus was born the polo shirt, first worn by Lacoste at the 1926 U.S. Open championship.

A French woman, Herminie Cadolle, invented the modern bra. In the late 19th century, women would come to her lingerie store to be measured and would then have pieces custom-made. Little did she know that her bras would be adopted as and remain a standard piece of women’s undergarments.

The haute couture world of Paris provided the perfect environment for some of the world’s most influential fashion innovations. Tailor Alexis Lavigne invented the couture mannequin, the supple measuring tape, and founded the world’s first fashion school.

One of the largest art museums in the world, the Louvre Museum was once a royal palace. It opened to the public as a museum during the French Revolution. Before serving a seasoned salad, the leaves should be broken by hand rather than sliced with a knife. This habit comes from the time when silverware was most commonly used and the acidity of the vinegar would tarnish it.

To cheer by banging glasses is a custom born in the Middle Ages, a time when death by poisoning happened frequently. When drinking, Lords would make sure that a little content of their glass spilt in others’ glasses to show that the drinks were not poisoned.

The jardin à la française is a garden fitted out according to rules of proportions and symmetry in which the geometrical forms dominate on the natural elements. This style of garden, wildly popular in the 17th century, is a model of inspiration to gardeners to create a space with harmonious lines.

One should always offer flowers in odd numbers but not 13 as it is considered unlucky.

Singapore, a zone of influence(s) The organisers of MAISON&OBJET, today one of the most important international events for decoration industry professionals, will be launching first edition of MAISON&OBJET ASIA in Singapore from March 10 to 13, 2014. This move was prompted by the free-trade agreement concluded in December 2012 between the European Union and the Singapore government and a number of factors that have contributed to the growth of Singapore’s design scene. In Singapore, never have lifestyle disciplines been so transversal and enriched. In a collective dynamic, everyone brings his culture and background, giving birth to a complete entity far superior to the sum of its parts. Fashion and the Home are intimately linked by a "couture" mood, influencing each other and renewing with the rhythm of the seasons. Design and luxury intertwine to produce pockets of excellence. As for gastronomy, it nourishes and is nourished by unlimited inspirations. Architects, creators, designers, photographers, chefs… a bubbling, creative fusion animates each sensibility. With its “consuming", responsible energy (plus a green attitude adopted in every field), Singapore sees itself as the land of privileged expression.

The YellowKorner concept is very simple: to introduce the greatest photographers from all over the world and to increase the number of copies of their work to make it accessible to as many collectors as possible. All YellowKorner, photographs are silver gelatin prints produced by a professional laboratory under the artist’s control. Yves Delorme is at the heart of French bed linen luxury.

Yves Delorme’s story began in 1845 when Ernestine Fremaux and her husband founded a linen weaving company in the heart of the textile industry, near Lille, France. Over generations, the Fremaux Delorme group evolved through diversification, into the production of threads and canvases for linens, jacquards, and fabrics for the clothing industry. Since 1984, Dominique Fremaux (descendant of Ernestine) began developing collections with stylist Evelyne Julienne, which shaped the group’s creative direction. Around the same time, Fremaux also met Yves Delorme and purchased his company in 1989. In 1991, with Delorme and Julienne, Fremaux launched the first Yves Delorme Collections. In 1993, the first Yves Delorme boutiques opened in France and in the USA.

In 2001, Yves Delorme was made part of the Comité Colbert, the temple of luxury and French art de vivre. The brand has developed with a lifestyle concept, as seen since 2004 in the product lines, which include table linens, candles and other home décor items. This direction was further strengthened in 2008 through Yves Delorme’s alliance with home furnishings brand Mis En Demeure. This family story continues today with a new generation. The future of the brand is thus constructed with the sixth generation of Fremaux, upon the spirit of perpetuating knowledge and savoir-faire and upon shared modernity.

There are between 350 and 400 distinct types of French cheese, enough to have a different one every day.

There is no exact English equivalent to the phrase Bon appétit. The French phrase is the only one used in English.

Goûter or quatre-heure is an afternoon snack for French children and often consisting of pains au chocolat , biscuits, brioches, or crêpes. Wine has been made in France since the time of the Roman Empire, or more than 2,000 years.

The French eat more cheese than any other nation in the world: a total of 20.4 kilogrammes per person per year.

In France, cuisine differs greatly from one region to the next. The Provence region uses olive oils, tomatoes and herbs in many dishes. In Normandy, the food incorporates butter, crème fraiche and apples. The Alps are known for its cheese dishes like fondue and raclette, while beer and sauerkraut reveal Alsace’s strong German influence.

There’s little doubt that French cuisine is well entrenched in Singapore. A few decades ago, you could easily single out all the exceptional French restaurants on our sleepy island. Dining at one of them was considered by many as a special treat or a venue you would pick for a wedding proposal. These days, upscale dining establishments and luxury patisseries are jostling for real estate space alongside charming brasseries and boutique wine retail shops, and opening faster than you can say, “Bonjour.” The face of French gastronomy has also undergone a metamorphosis as chefs adopt nouvelle cuisine as the new approach to cooking, eschewing heavy creams and butter and combining classic French cooking with modern techniques. Whether it’s a cosy bistro dishing up crispy confit de canard or a much-lauded diner serving a languidly paced degustation meal, French cuisine has become a regular and accessible part of our lifestyle and culinary vernacular. UNESCO’s seal of approval − it granted French gastronomy world heritage status in 2010 − is further validation of the cuisine’s far-reaching influence. But it’s not just about the act of sipping the finest Burgundies, or savouring the fluffiest meringues that even Auguste Escoffier would be proud of. At the heart of French dining’s appeal is this notion of unyielding artistry and craftsmanship, and a celebration of refinement, a philosophy that makes its cuisine such a force to be reckoned with on the global culinary stage.

epicure magazine is, indeed, proud to associate itself with The French Chamber of Commerce’s dedicated efforts in promoting the French Shopping and Dining Guide in Singapore. We believe French gastronomy − and its continual evolution − is a cause that is certainly worth supporting.

“RESTAURATEURS DE FRANCE”

The

French

Chamber

of

Commerce Gourmet

Committee is proud to support French gastronomy in Singapore through the ‘Restaurateurs de France’ certification, which is being introduced for the first time outside France. The ‘Restaurateurs de France’ certification is an official label recognised by the French Government for the independent restaurant industry. Created in France by restaurateurs themselves, it aims to recognise the quality of the most demanding restaurateurs and it guarantees homemade French cooking with high quality products. Restaurants who apply to get the certification choose to engage in a dynamic process through which they agree, as professionals, to a critical review of their establishment as well as to regularly being audited by an independent body to offer the best of quality to their customers. In order to be certified as a traditional French restaurant, establishments must meet certain criteria. Mainly, freshness and origin of food have to match French quality, the ambience has to have many elements of French origin from furniture to décor, and the head chef must have adequate qualifications and experience in preparing French dishes. The certification is just being introduced in Singapore and the first three restaurants to have received the certification are Brasserie Gavroche, L’Angélus, and Les Bouchons, with more restaurants to follow.

Enter a world of sweet delicacies and French art de vivre with world renowned Ladurée.

www.laduree.com Ladurée Boutique Takashimaya Shopping Centre Ngee Ann City 391 Orchard Road #02-09 Tel: 6884 7361

The history of Parisian tea rooms is intimately tied to the Ladurée family. It all began in 1862, when Louis Ernest Ladurée, a miller from France’s southwest, created a bakery in Paris at 16 rue Royale.

Ladurée in Singapore offers its highly popular macarons, displayed in beautiful boxes, along with its collection of chocolates, candies, teas, jams, perfumed candles and home fragrances.

The rue Royale tea room was enlarged in 1930 by Pierre Desfontaines, second cousin of Ladurée, who, in the mid-20th century, had the idea to combine macaron pieces into pairs, and garnish them with a tasty flavour. Thus began the story of the Ladurée macaron.

Every care is given to Ladurée’s packaging to reflect perfectly on the brand and make every item that comes out of the House a perfect gift.

PAUL is an important part of France’s culinary and cultural heritage. Many of its French city centre shops have preserved the shop fronts of the past and, in their way, recall a certain idea of traditional baking. This same idea extends to PAUL’s bakery restaurants: the finest materials decorate the shop, with antiques and other elements sought out all over France. This has resulted in the special, welcoming atmosphere found there today. By inaugurating its first bakeryrestaurant here, PAUL brought its

bread to Singapore with the same subtle, nutty taste that it has in Paris. Its restaurants take food lovers on a savoury journey to France with a wide range of mouth-watering patisseries and viennoiseries, plus French-style meals and snacks, including quiches, croque-monsieur, mixed salads and tasty dishes. Today, PAUL has a network of over 500 stores in 30 countries, serving more than 5 million customers every month in France alone, and it continues to be a family-run venture. 143
