Message from the Ambassador of France am particularly proud to raise the curtain on Voilah! French Festival Singapore 2007, to present France united under a single banner bearing all the colours of the French spring blossoming in Singapore. Not only colours, but also sounds, flavours and ideas. A rich array of events featuring France’s many facets is about to take the CityState by storm: Haute Couture in a creative dialogue with gastronomy; the essence of wine in a rapturous rivalry with the essence of perfume; the sumptuous presentation of original prints and copper plates of the Louvre Museum for the first time in Singapore with the inaugural exhibition Engraving the World presented at the Singapore Art Museum, the performances of iconic DJs’ Stéphane Pompougnac and Nouvelle Vague, of the Wanderer Trio in a repertoire of French music, as well as the Deviation Company in a display of street arts and modern circus. Last but not least, France’s successful endeavours in advanced technologies will constitute the centrepiece of a symposium on High Tech and Innovation: Connecting France and Singapore.

I

Connecting France and Singapore… This could be the binding thread of the whole Voilah! Festival. A moment of shared pleasure and fun with our friends from Singapore is what we aim to achieve. Getting them to join us would be the greatest measure of our success. I am also happy that the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, the festival organiser, has managed to team up so efficiently with so many partners beyond the French Embassy, the Alliance Française, as well as the numerous French, Singaporean and foreign sponsors who all contributed to cast the spotlight on our country. Voilah… Que la fête commence ! Pierre Buhler Ambassador of France to Singapore

Voila la France... ... Voilah Singapore! ingapore and France have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship which as enabled French citizens and French companies to settle and prosper in this City-State, bringing the French community today to more than five thousand.

The French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (FCCS) is proud to present Voilah! French Festival Singapore 2007 - a series of exciting events and festivities organised with the support of the French Embassy, local French companies and established Singaporean institutions - to celebrate the friendship between France and Singapore. France is not as far as it seems! Voilah! brings it to your doorstep from May 3 to 28. Featuring a broad spectrum of events, this year French Festival presents exhibitions and performances never before seen in Singapore. Beyond a cultural fest, Voilah! offers you the best and most innovative of French Businesses. The French Promotion Weeks, for example, allow food and shopping aficionados to experience genuine French cuisine, the finest wines or find the most outstanding products and services France has to offer while the High-Tech and Innovation Symposium invite all of you to discover the technological headway of French science and technology and how it translates into your everyday life. Voilah! has something for everyone. Have fun with us this May... the French way! Also, we invite you to join our Voilah! the Box and French Quiz contests to win amazing prizes. Have an entertaining and surprising May full of thrilling “French experiences. Jean-Luc Anglada President of the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore

What does

mean?

“Voilah! ? But it’s not even French” could you say... and you would be right! The correct French formulation is “Voilà” (without the “h” at the end). So why did we choose “Voilah”? The idea behind our event was to create a festival for Singapore and its people. Consequently, we tried to find a brand name that could incarnate the celebration of the friendship between France and Singapore. We wanted a name that would be understood by all, French and Singaporeans alike. A name that would represent French culture while respecting the diversity and richness of Singapore. Supporting the core concept of the Festival came the FrenchSingaporean hybrid tagline, “Voilah”. However, as often, more important than the “why” is the “how”… “Voilah” is a play on words, which introduces a colloquial Singaporean “lah” to exuberant French “voilà”. The word “voilà” is one of the French word most frenquently used by non-French speaking people; it actually means “here it is!” as in when presenting something. As for “lah”, well… you know better than we do its popular usage in Singapore… The inspiration of Voilah! logo A legendary French artist, Henri Matisse (1816-1954) revolutionised the French art movement in the 20th century. His unique, masterful and radical use of colour and form to convey emotional expressions has deeply influenced generations of artists across different genres and cultures. Matisse is also synonym of passion: passion to create, passion to innovate and passion to keep on. Left disabled after an operation, he did not allow this setback to halt his work, and he set about creating cut paper collages. The Voilah! logo pays homage to his genius and is a modern adaptation of his original work. The thing we are the proudest of? The name and logo Voilah! were created by the Singaporean designers of First Media Group… You know now all the secrets that were lying behind “Voilah”…

Nothing moves you like a Citroën

Invention. Design. Adventure. Flair. Qualities that have been synonymous with Citroën since our beginning in 1919. Setting a long tradition of innovation, our cars are crafted for style and performance. With each model distinct in its own way, boasting features as unique as the drivers whom they’re made for. The Citroën C1 1.0L is one such example. Modern and attractive with a curvaceous design, it is the baby of the Citroën family with its compact size. But it comes bursting with big attributes, like Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) for supreme handling as well as incredible occupant protection. For a technologically advanced ride, the Citroën C3 1.6L rolls right into mind. Everything about it screams innovation. From its SensoDrive gearbox to the on-board trip computer. Comfort is also taken to another level here, especially with its awe-inspiring sun roof. And when it comes to an intelligent car, it’s hard to outsmart the Citroën C4 1.6L. Just take the fixed centred controls steering wheel, which is truly a Citroën innovation like no other. Not forgetting exemplary safety features like Emergency Braking Assistance (EBA) and auto-illuminated headlamps. Nothing embodies uniqueness quite like the Citroën C5 2.0L, a car that’s fitted for a different driving experience. Its autoadaptive Hydractive 3 suspension system is 16

probably one of the most advanced of its kind, while the world’s first knee airbag is another feather in its cap. The Citroën Berlingo 1.6L diesel engine is clearly one solid performer. It’s extremely robust and reliable, courtesy of the impactresistant reinforced structure and powerful engine options. Space also poses no problem with its flexible 3m3 volume. Not resting on its laurels, the Citroën Jumpy 2.0L diesel

engine is a hardworking commercial vehicle in the Citroën range. Its versatility is amazing. And it’s boosted with technological innovations to take on multiple purposes. The expansive load volume. The impressive payload. All combined to offer only the best performance.

New Citroёn models for 2007 As we move further ahead, Citroën connoisseurs can look forward to more exciting models streaking this way.

The Citroën C4 Coupe is due to make a stunning entrance, celebrating Citroën’s third consecutive Drivers’ Championship win and return to WRC 2007. Rally car fans will find joy in its sporty flared wheel arches and rear spoiler, while its potent engine leaves everything else in the dust. Another stirring newcomer is the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso, a 7-seater MPV that is redefining the boundaries of freedom. With its extremely spacious interior, super-wide panoramic windscreen and sleek curves providing an immense driving experience. And the Citroën C6 will be initiated with much anticipation.

A prestigious ride that delivers elegance and power, crowned by a head-level display that offers essential information for greater navigation. Culminating in a silky balance of comfort, performance and road-holding. Hence leaving admirers of fine cars with only one real option. Drive it.

G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge Well-structured, tonic, elegant and long, Cordon Rouge, made up of 77 wines, sums up the spirit of the know-how and dynamism of the Mumm Champagne house. Tasting Notes ß Complex fresh fruit and caramel flavours, the mark of a great wine. ß A touch of acidity and remarkable length in the mouth make for a consistently delightful finish.

Martell Cordon Bleu Created in 1912 by Edouard Martell, Cordon Bleu has grown in reputation over the years to set the international standard for classic, super-premium Cognacs, where it enjoys connoisseur status. Tasting Notes ß Round and complex, floral and spicy fragrance, very elegant and refined. ß Exceptionally smooth and round, rich in fruit and wood with a delicate aftertaste due to long ageing. The predominance of Borderies gives it a complex and mellow character. 19

Engraving the World The Chalcography of the Louvre Museum Let us take you straight to the heart of Paris: the Louvre Museum! The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and Voilah! are proud to present for the very first time in Singapore some of the most prestigious pieces of the Chalcography Collection of the Louvre Museum. Featuring 138 prints, Engraving the World at the SAM showcases the history and development of print-making from the Sun King, Louis XIV, until today. Chalcography (the word means “writing on copper” in Greek), endorsed in the 17th century under the patronage of Louis XIV (r.1643-1715), refers to the technique of engraving on copper, as well as the repository in which the copper engraved plates are kept in.

Other exhibition highlights include etchings of masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People to commemorate the July Revolution of France in 1830; as well as prints by several contemporary artists, such as internationally renowned Louise Bourgeois, illustrating the continuing practice of this form of printmaking today. Engraving the World surveys the use of this medium which revolutionised the dissemination of images, as well as the artist’s practice and presents a unique insight into one of the world’s most important collections.

The

Vollard Suite

The Singapore Tyler Print Institute presents a rare collection of prints by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) known as the Vollard Suite, one of the most important graphic series in the history of art and comparable in quality and importance only to the prints of Rembrandt and Goya. The exhibition of the rare and complete set of 100 prints consisting of etchings, aquatints and drypoints (1930-37) with a central theme of a Minotaur – a mythological figure of a bull’s head with a man’s body – is the first solo show by Pablo Picasso in Singapore.

With the success of Picasso’s illustrations for Balzac’s Chef d’Œuvre Inconnu and La Metamorpose d’Ovid, Vollard was inspired to commission one hundred plates from him, which make up The Vollard Suite. By March 1937, the serie was completed with the addition of three more portraits of the publisher himself. Picasso’s Vollard Suite is hailed as “one of the greatest triumphs of his graphic art” and STPI’s showing this seminal collection in its entirety will be a rare opportunity for Singapore and will make for a memorable exhibition.

Ambroise Vollard (1866-1936) – the man whose name graces the collection – was a legendary French art dealer and publisher, introduced to Picasso in Paris in 1901. Shortly thereafter, Vollard gave Picasso his first exhibition including the famous first blue period works in 1902.

Trio Wanderer Trio Wanderer quite deserves their stagename. Indeed, “Wanderer” pays homage to Schubert, and more widely to German Romanticism which is often imbued with the leitmotiv of the wandering traveller. These three French musicians are avid openminded wandering travellers, who explore the musical world, spanning the centuries from Mozart and Haydn to nowadays. Acclaimed for its extraordinarily sensitive style, almost telepathic understanding of each other and technical mastery, the Trio Wanderer is one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles. Heralded by the professional music world, the Trio Wanderer was awarded two French “Victoires de la Musique” in 1997 and 2000 for Best Chamber Music Ensemble of the Year. Their most recent recording, Brahms Trios, has been awarded a “Diapason d’Or” and the Midem Classical Music Award 2007 for Best Chamber Music Recording of the Year.

The Trio has performed on the most prestigious music stages: Berlin’s Philharmonie, Paris’ Théâtre des Champs Elysées, London’s Wigmore Hall, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Washington’s Library of Congress, Tokyo’s Kioi Hall, Zürich’s Tonhalle and Amsterdam‘s Concertgebouw. They have also performed at major festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Rheingau Musiksommer, Roque d’Anthéron, Les Folles Journées de Nantes, Granada Festival, Stresa Festival, or Osaka. Their debut at the Salzburg Festival in August 2002 was praised as “a triumphant success” by the critics and led to their return for the 2004 and 2006 Festivals. For their unique concert in Singapore during Voilah!, Trio Wanderer has chosen a programme of such well known pieces as Debussy’s Sonata for violoncello and piano, or Turina’s Trio “Circulo”.

Laura inclines towards the secular; she is cynical, a student of philosophy and falling in love with an Algerian named Djamel. Mathilde, the elder sister, is devout, but conflicted by dual fidelities to God and husband. The latter, sexually frustrated, is no longer faithful. Can faith be reconciled with foreplay? Company Deviation Original and surprising, Déviation is a performance group from France which uses rhythms, choreographed movements and percussion as a universal language, and at the same time tells humorous stories. Formed in 1991, the group has performed all over the world and now brings their largest show to Esplanade this May, held in conjunction with the Singapore Arts Festival.

Déballage Public (Public Display) A mysterious giant box sits outside the Esplanade undisturbed, but when night falls it opens to unveil its hidden secrets and surprises. A contemporary instrumental sculpture, Déballage Public is a giant crate which opens like a flower to unveil a massive stage of unusual percussion instruments and four enigmatic characters who control this living sculpture. It has been called the musical trojan horse of the 21st century. Get ready for an adventure of rhythms, reinvented sounds and a big surprise!

Murmurant (Murmuring) Be amazed by a mobile wall of drums 6.5 meters long and 3 meters high! Come and follow the structure as it moves through the Esplanade waterfront. Each performance is one-of-a-kind as six playful musicians will involve you to be part of the show and participate in their mischief! A perfect outing for children and families!

Wine Fair Carrefour is recognised as the reference of Wine in Singapore... The story started 10 years ago, as a pioneer, the wine fairs have always been the pride of Carrefour Singapore. Implementing year after year, following their customers' feedback and the market trends, Carrefour has meticulously selected, sorted and displayed the best of what the world provides in term of wine at Suntec and Plaza Stores. All these result in two annual wine oriented-events: the “French Fair” & the “International Wine Fair” During this Wine Fair in May, not only will customers be able to get their favourite French regional specialties - wines from Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire, Bretagne and many more - but they will also be able to pick up some tips from a great wine specialist

of Bourgogne (Burgundy) and Bordeaux. Another distinct feature is the Electronic Wine Advisor which allows downloading of information of one’s favourite wines to their mobile phones. This year, Carrefour has decided to orient its event toward an agreeable trend, the wines of Burgundy. Treasures of France, those outstanding wines will be honoured this year thanks to their producer stationed here for 4 whole days and answering all queries and offering tips. An impressive assortment will be available at the fair, and the cream of the crop - the “Burgundy Wine Aroma Cellar”, a world recognised Burgundy invention - will be a discovery journey of the best flavours ever. What’s more, shoppers also stand a chance to win a Family Trip for 4 to France with any purchase. So check out the Carrefour French Fair at Suntec City Atrium from 18 - 27 May 2007!

Burgundy Wine Aroma cellar The

Traditionally Burgundy wines reputation rests on its most prestigious wines: Nuits-SaintGeorges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Romanee Conti… These days however, it also offers wines in tune with modern tastes that are fresh, fruity, harmonious and most importantly, easy to enjoy.

Cellar – an olfactory experience that is at once educational, playful, and pleasing to the senses.

Their aromatic elegance and full flavours make them a pleasant complement to many cuisines from around the world, from the simplest dishes to the most sophisticated ones. Their style and spontaneity add to the enjoyment of any occasion.

12 aromatic “families” are laid out on barrels (the famous Burgundian “pieces”). They illustrate the principal olfactory characteristics of red and white wines, young wines and older wines, and the ageing of wines in new barrels.

The Burgundy Wine Aroma Cellar presents the wines of Burgundy through the medium of their highly diversified aromas.

In a world where standardised tastes are imposed by modern mass consumption, Burgundy offers something different. It will transport you on a warm journey of the senses sparked with unforgettable moments of discovery! To learn more about Burgundy Wines, we invite you to visit the Burgundy Wine Aroma

If someone says environment, what springs to mind? Do you see a tree? At Veolia we see an industrial challenge. Today it is essential that we combine both the services that people require and the protection the environment needs. The increase in the consumption of water and energy, the production of waste and the traffic build-up in our urban centres call for industrial solutions. Veolia Environnement has made it its business to provide them.
