5838 Columbia Pike GUS CONSTANCE AND SARAH MILLER will serve as king and queen in the Memorial Day parade. (P: N-P)
Constance, Miller to Serve As Parade King & Queen BY DREW COSTLEY
FALLS CHURCH NEWS-PRESS
The two Falls Church City natives and soon-to-be George Mason High School grads who were named Mr. and Ms. Mason said they were nominated, as tradition goes, by their teachers to compete in the faux beauty pageant. But Constance also said he competed to uphold the tradition of his two older sisters, who competed and won the Mr. and Ms. Mason competition in recent years. And Miller said that she had to overcome some stage fright in order to give her pageant-winning performance this year. The duo sat down with the News-Press to talk about the Mr. and Ms. Mason competition, their Memorial Day and Mason memories and their plans for the parade and the future.
How did you win the Mr. and Ms. Mason titles?
Sarah Miller: So I did a skit. It was a satire on the big crazy college admissions process. I called it “College Applicants Shoot for the Moon,” and it was about how applications to the University of the Moon have skyrocketed this year. And it was just kind of silly. I pretended to be an ABC reporter and I wrote this thing to talk about and then I interviewed a bunch of my friends who are seniors about why they did or didn’t apply to the
University of the Moon. Gus Constance: I won by collaborating with my friend Emma Graig. We did a video together and in the video we performed a skit. The premise of the skit was that the SCA advisor and an English teacher at George Mason, Mr. Laub, had been framed for embezzling money from the school, so we wanted to get to the bottom of that. We were trying to be funny and all. What are your memories from past Memorial Days in the city?
Sarah: I love Memorial Day and chicken on a stick obviously. I love the Fun Run. I take the fun part of Fun Run seriously and I used to run cross country and I love to do it with friends and stuff. I also love just seeing everyone. It’s just so special that everyone in Falls Church comes out and I can see like my first grade teacher, or someone from my swim team that I haven’t seen all year who doesn’t necessarily go to City schools. Everyone is out at once, which is fun. Gus: What I always looked forward to about Memorial Day was the different booths and stands and different food. There’s this one booth that always had good lemonade. And then the parade is always very fun, with the Shriners going around in their cars and stuff. It’s just a good time.
Did you know that, by winning Mr. and Ms. Mason, you became king and queen of the Memorial Day parade? Sarah: It was in the back of my mind but I had kinda forgotten about it until like after it happened when they were like ‘Oh, by the way, you’re the queen now.” And I was like “Oh my gosh, right. I forgot about that.” Gus: Yeah. Both my older sisters were Ms. Mason before I was, so I knew that’s what I was in for.

Buschows to Serve as Parade Grand Marshals by Liz Lizama
Falls Church News-Press
Longtime Falls Church residents Barry and Kathleen Buschow are honored to serve as grand marshals for this year’s Memorial Day parade. “The parade is so all Americana,” said Mrs. Buschow. “It is what I think Falls Church is all about. It just makes you smile. It’s a really great reflection of our community.” The couple has a long history of public service and dedication to uplifting the Falls Church community. Mrs. Buschow, who served 14 years as Falls Church City Clerk, has strong roots in the Northern Virginia area. “I grew up in Alexandria, Arlington,” she said. “I grew up in Kings Park – when it was the end of the Earth,” she laughed continuing on about her presence in the area during the opening of the beltway and Dulles Airport. A graduate of George Mason University, Mrs. Buschow worked for two U.S. senators on Capitol Hill, a small business lobbying organization and a large Washington, D.C. law firm before becoming City Clerk of Falls Church, which she described as the perfect job for her. As City Clerk, Mrs. Buschow said she enjoyed working with the residents, especially the senior citizens. “My degree is in government, and I’ve worked in politics and in the legal field, so it was a great job for me to have after my other previous jobs.” Prior to her tenure, she said Falls Church had not been represented much in the Virginia Municipal Clerks Association. She made a point to attend every conference and served as president of the organization from 2010 to 2011. In 2008, the association also named her Clerk of the Year. Since retiring last year, Mrs. Buschow now enjoys painting but remains involved with the Virginia Municipal Clerks Association. She recently donated one of her paintings for an upcoming silent auction. When she’s not painting, she dedicates her time to the Falls Church Sisters’ Choice Quilters and the Falls Church chapter of Quilters Unlimited, which she has been active in for more than 25 years. She previously served as board member and treasurer of Falls Church Arts. Much like his wife, Mr. Buschow has been a very active figure in the Falls Church community. He currently serves on
MEMORIAL DAY GRAND MARSHALS Barry and Kathleen Buschow stand together at Cherry Hill Park in the photo above. the board of the Northern Virginia Parks Authority and is president of the Falls Church Lions Club, corresponding secretary for the Village Preservation and Improvement Society, and secretary of the Falls Church Scout House Building Association. Last year, the Village Preservation and Improvement Society awarded the “Spirit of Falls Church” award to Mr. Buschow for his dedication to the community. In addition, he has been named the Lions Club “Lion of the Year” three times and received the 1999 Caroll V. Shreve Award for Meritorious
Community Service from the Falls Church Chamber of Commerce The 1967 George Mason High School graduate first moved to Falls Church in 1951 with his parents. After going away to college, Mr. Buschow spent some time away from Falls Church but returned in 1987 with his wife and his son, James, who also graduated from George Mason High School. In his professional career, Mr. Buschow has served as a government contractor for 30 years. He currently works as a consultant on the Federal Aviation Administration’s NextGen air traffic control initiative.
Mr. Buschow said it is an honor to serve as grand marshal with his wife. “I’ve marched in the parade when I was in high school, in the band, back in the day when we used to march down Broad Street, so I’ve known the parade for a long, long time,” he said. For the last 20 or 25 years, he
said he’s been volunteering at different booths during the parade. “I’m always working the Lions Club or the Village Preservation and Improvement Society booth, and so I never really get to see the parade,” he laughed. “So this will be one of the first years I really get to see the whole parade.”

Decorate A Vet Spruces and Dresses Up Veterans’ Homes by Patricia Leslie
Falls Church News-Press
Jeff Jones was sitting in church one morning during Christmas when it all came together. He’d been thinking for a while about doing something to honor veterans – his father, grandfather, and uncles were all servicemen – but the project had not formed. Until then. “I’m a Navy brat who’s moved around the country, and I came to a point in my life when I could do something,” said Jones, the owner of Classic Stonescaping and Gardens in Falls Church. In the pew that Sunday morning, the idea took shape, and “Decorate A Vet” was born. Why not decorate the homes of veterans for the holidays? Jones, 45, approached his pal, David Tax, 49, who exclaimed
“I’m in, 100 percent!” and off they ran in 2010, starting with five or six homes to decorate. Right from the get-go, it quickly became apparent that more was needed to be done for the veterans’ homes than simply decorating for the holidays. “The first year blossomed into a lot more,” said Tax in an interview with Jones at Tax’s restaurant, Clare and Don’s Beach Shack. They started painting and chopping and trimming and cutting and hauling away overgrown bushes and trees and debris from the homes, and installing new fences and gutters and shutters, ramps, and hand rails, and over the years, found hundreds of volunteers and partners to help out. Like Home Depot at Seven Corners whose manager uses his discretionary fund to supply mate-
rials and send over five or six volunteers, or the FBI which sent 50 volunteers one year, or the five fire departments whose ladders volunteers climb to erect lights up high, or the American Legion. Said Tax: “The kids of my generation have had some kind of disconnect. They’ve not been to combat or defended the U.S.,” so involving children in the project was a top goal, and they do it, on “Decoration Day,” the Saturday which follows the work week after Thanksgiving when adult volunteers, who have numbered in the hundreds over time, beautify the veterans’ homes. “It’s the most fun seeing kids out there, sharing responsibilities,” Tax said. The group’s biggest problem is identifying veterans who want to sign up for the project since many veterans believe their comrades

have greater needs, but “this is not need based,” Jones said. Nominations for (mostly, outside) home improvements can be made on the DAV website, www. decorateavet.org, and veterans may submit themselves. At each of the five to nine homes DAV decorates, volunteers hang a flag and plant a tree. One year they branched out to the Wounded Warriors Care Center at Fort Belvoir to decorate a floor and serve food to the staff and patients from Tax’s restaurants. (He also owns Mike’s Deli at Lazy Sundae.) For two years going on three, a grant from the Bob Woodruff Foundation has funded the administrative side of DAV which recently received a 501(c) (3) status from the IRS making donations to DAV tax deductible. (DAV’s annual fundraiser will be in October at the Beach Shack.) Dave and Ada Evans are one Falls Church couple who have benefitted from DAV’s gifts. In 2013 they were mostly confined to home. Dave Evans, an Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War days, was felled by a stroke in 2009 and got around on a scooter. Ada Evans was recovering from eye surgery. “We were not looking forward to Christmas very much that year,”
Ada Evans said. One Saturday morning they looked out their windows to find 100 “decorators” in their yard. The volunteers “really lifted Dave’s spirits a great deal,” she said, and her husband came out on his scooter to welcome the guests. The Evans have lived in their Falls Church home since 1972 and “had never had a driveway” until DAV built one for them. Dave Evans likes to grill, and “Jeff built a very expensive, beautiful stone walkway” so Evans can get out to the grill on his scooter, and, also, his “man cave,” made accessible by DAV. “I was just stunned,” said Ada Evans. We really appreciate what they did,” and she still calls Jones for referrals on home improvements. “We’re just trying to say ‘thank you,’” said Tax. “It’s more about what they’ve already done.” “If more people would do a little bit more, it would go a long way.” “Our goal is to help vets within the city,” Jones. “Stay in your lane.” Neither Jones nor Tax is a veteran. They estimate they’ve worked on 35 to 40 homes since Jones’s dream took root in a church pew at Christmas.

Parade King & Queen Chat with News-Press And just like no one takes themselves too seriously which I like. I remember my eighth grade year was the first year I was there and I was kind of apprehensive about going to high school like “Oh my gosh, there are people here who are five years older than me. That’s insane.” But some time during the school year there were people, to this day I don’t know why, but there were people dressed as Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man and the ghosts and chasing each other around the school and like no one blinked an eye like it was normal. And I thought okay, I can fit in here. I can do this. Gus: I’d say overall it was enjoyable just because it was an environment where I was able to be friends with pretty much everyone in my grade. And so, as stressful as it may be, it was always a friendly place that I didn’t mind going back to necessarily.

also want to avoid them. But usually people aren’t trying to take my photo so that’s a good thing. Gus: Exercising everyday [insert] plug for Title Boxing Club. It’s a great place. Awesome trainers. And just hanging around the many wonderful places that we have here in Falls Church. Cherry Hill Park is a favorite of mine. What was your Mason experience like? Sarah: It’s been wonderful. I’m so glad I was lucky enough to grow up here. Everything about Mason is so special. I love the community because it’s a smaller school, especially this year, our grade has gotten really close. And the teachers are so supportive and so wonderful. I love how everyone knows each other and the teachers go above and beyond.
What is one Mason memory you’ll never forget?
stay with me for the rest of my life.
Sarah: I’ve been on swim team and student government and I started the Settlers of Catlan Club and doing the activities with that club has been so fun. And this year, my brother [David] is a freshman this year so we’ve been able to overlap and he’s been on student council, which has been so much fun. We’ve gotten a lot closer this year and I love him and I’m going to miss him so much next year. But it’s been so fun to be together this year, so I’ll never forget that. Gus: Probably being a part of “Les Miserable,” the musical, in eighth grade. That was my first musical and I stayed a part of the theatre program since then. It was just awesome being a member of that cast. I think we got some kind of award for that. But yeah, that’ll
What are your plans after graduation?
Sarah: In the fall I’m going to Dartmouth College and I want to study neuroscience and maybe minor in statistics. I’ve done a lot of work with kids neurodevelopmental delays or that are on the autism spectrum and I’m also really interested in science, so maybe eventually get my PhD and contribute to the knowledge of neurobiological factors of developmental delays. Gus: I’m attending VCU this fall and majoring in psychology. I’m excited to live in Richmond. What are your career aspirations? Sarah: As of right now – I’m definitely open to changing my mind, but I want to get my PhD
and do research in that field and maybe be a professor or something like that, so I can do research or maybe a marine biologist. That’s always been my childhood dream like ‘I want to be a marine biologist,” but I’ve never done anything with marine biology, so we’ll see. I love manatees, though. Gus: I hope maybe one day to have my own occupational therapy practice and if that doesn’t work out I might try to open a record store. What is your message, as king and queen, to your subjects? Sarah: I guess my message to my subjects would be if you’re a little sweaty that’s okay. I think everyone sweats at Memorial Day, so just embrace that. And you’re all wonderful and Falls Church is a great place. Gus: Stay in school.
