CELEBRATING OUR HEROES who change lives

2015 Annual Report to the Community

DEAR HEROES, Capes and crests may symbolize the heroes that inspire us, wielding special powers and saving lives, but real power comes from our everyday heroes – donors, supporters, stakeholders, partners, funders, board members, employees and friends. You impact the most vulnerable members of our community, healing children who have been abused, supporting families in crisis, and setting individuals struggling with mental illness and addiction on the path to recovery. Children are safer. Families are stronger. Thank you, heroes, for supporting the work of Family & Children’s Services. This past year, our impact was stronger than ever as we increased the number of clients we served by 20%. In our ongoing commitment to innovate or adopt new best practices, we implemented two new programs to make a difference in the lives of Tulsa families: »» HEALTH HOMES is an innovative approach to address the untreated serious chronic health problems that plague many of our mental health clients – leading to a to 25-year shortened life expectancy. Health Homes strives to improve health outcomes through integration of mental health and primary care services with the emphasis on care coordination, wellness and preventative care. »» COPES FOR FOSTER FAMILIES was created during the time the children’s emergency shelter was closing. This 24/7 telephone and mobile crisis unit for foster families and children provides rapid crisis services to deescalate situations that might otherwise deteriorate, leading to the removal of the child from the family. Tulsa Area United Way stepped up, providing funding to pilot this innovative foster family stabilization program We were also proud to see our work recognized with several agency and leadership awards: »» Women in Recovery was the recipient of the 2016 EXCELLENCE IN ADDICTIONS TREATMENT INNOVATION from the National Council for Behavioral Health, and the Dr. Rodney L. Huey Memorial CHAMPION OF OKLAHOMA HEALTH AWARD. »» I received the 2015 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNAE AWARD from the University of Oklahoma, College of Arts and Sciences and the 2016 League of Women Voters’ MADAM PRESIDENT AWARD. As we are one decade away from a full century of service, we took new steps to ensure long-term financial viability through the establishment of a new endowment trust. 2

With that said, we cannot ignore the precipice of the Oklahoma fiscal crisis and its implication for the health and wellbeing of Tulsa families. State cuts to a variety of services create enormous stress on the families and children we serve, putting many of them at risk. We anticipate an ever growing need for our services in the coming year and are strengthening our capacity to respond quickly and effectively. We are on the front lines, making a difference. Your support ensures that we can continue to serve vulnerable children and families. We are so grateful to all of our friends who help us change lives every day. Very truly yours,

Gail Lapidus Chief Executive Officer Family & Children’s Services

“YOU IMPACT THE MOST VULNERABLE MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY BY SUPPORTING OUR PROGRAMS WHICH STRENGTHEN CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, TREAT MENTAL ILLINESS, AND MAKE RECOVERY POSSIBLE.”
