FD Rant News Long Island, New York The #1 digital publication for the Long Island Fire Service covering the NEWS you want to hear about.

We would like to thank you for viewing our very special edition of the FD Rant News where we get to highlight the recipients of meritorious awards for bravery in the Nassau County Fire Service. We all know that firefighting is dangerous work. From the first day that you sign up, you realize that you will be performing in situations that will put your life at risk while you work to protect lives and properties of your neighbors. There are a few instances where the members of the fire service go above and beyond the call of duty while performing these tasks and, for their actions, they are recognized by their peers. There is no greater reward than to be honored by the men and women whom you serve side by side with in the fire service. This year, once again, we saw members of the Nassau County Fire Service make dramatic rescues. Some of the rescues were made under heavy fire conditions, some were in hazardous environments, and others involved operations in five feet of water during Hurricane Sandy. We are honored to have been given the opportunity to cover this event. As you will see, the FD Rant News had every aspect of this ceremony covered. We feel this event warrants not only a few pages of coverage; rather, we dedicate an entire edition to this event because every story should be covered and shared with all of our subscribers. The Fire Commission received numerous applications for awards that were reviewed and investigated. The result was 1 Gold Medal recipient, 10 Silver Medal recipients, 12 Bronze Medal Recipients, 11 Unit Citations and 2 Civilian Awards. Every story is told here and we have photos of each and every recipient. Sadly, I am going to wind up this editorial with some information that will likely annoy some people while others will just shrug their shoulders. Each year, this event is well attended by members of fire departments who have a member receiving an award or a department receiving a unit citation. Quite often, the family members of award recipients are present as their loved one receives the recognition of his peers. It is a proud moment for a member and also for his or her family. On the night of the ceremony, Ex-Chief John Curley was awarded the Gold Medal of Valor for his actions in rescuing a woman from a fire while incurring significant injuries in the process. His son, John Curley, Jr also receive the Civilian Award for his efforts in assisting his dad with the rescue. For the entire program, the Curley family listened to the narratives of the other award recipients and stood up each time while applauding their efforts. As the night moved along, the auditorium which was standing room only at the beginning began to slowly empty after each award was given out. By the time Ex-Chief Curley and John Curley Jr. received their awards, the auditorium was almost half empty. As a former Chief in the Nassau County Fire Service, I must say that it was quite embarrassing to see members leaving the ceremony before its conclusion. I can’t recall a time where I have seen such a level of disrespect shown by members of the “Brotherhood”. For those who remained in attendance to applaud the efforts of ALL the award winners who were recognized later in the program, I tip my cap to all of you. I only wish the auditorium was as full at the conclusion as it was at the start of the program. I would expect senior members of the fire service, especially those who have gold on their uniforms, to set a good example for the younger members by teaching them to show respect for their peers. Walking out of that auditorium that night was not like walking out of a bad movie in a theater. By leaving before acknowledging the achievements of ALL the award winners was not the right thing to do. I close out with a question for everyone who walked out, if that was YOU, or a member of YOUR department, how would you feel? We would like to hear your feddback. You can contact us as FDRantNews@verizon.net or call us at 631.766.3287.

ISLAND PARK FIRE DEPARTMENT Island Park Fire Department Unit Citation

On October 29, 2012 at approximately 1945 hours, the Island Park Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a house fire in the vicinity of 43 Marina Road. At this point in time, Hurricane Sandy was battering Long Island and the sustained winds were estimated at 65 mile per hour. There was also over four feet of water in the immediate vicinity of Island Park Fire Department Headquarters on Long Beach Road. Assisted by members of the National Guard Assistant Chief Anthony D’Esposito responded and quickly transmitted a signal 10 [working fire] as he had a fully involved house fire. With the water rising to over 5 feet, Island Park’s 5 ton truck-Unit 229, [which was on loan from the Town of Hempstead] responded to the scene and the crew attempted to use a portable pump to get water on the fire but, due to the depth of the water, the pump became submersed and was rendered inoperable. Fearing that other homes were at risk from the fire, Chief D’Esposito ordered the Ex-Chief Nurnberger, who was operating 229, to create a large wake to push water into the burning building. He then used the truck to drive through the structure in order to aid the extinguishing process and t oprevent the spread of fire to other homes. Residents in the adjacent homes began to panic as the flames were encroaching on their homes. At this time, several members of Island Park began to facilitate the removal and rescue of these residents bringing them to Unit 228 and shuttling them back to Island Park FD Headquarters. After the fire had been extinguished Unit 229 became disabled and had to be left at the scene. The crew that had operated at the fire had to walk/wade/swim back to Island Park Headquarters in water over 5 feet deep and with winds exceeding 80 mile per hour. For the high degree of risk and complexity of the rescues made the Island Park Fire Department received the Unit Citation. FD Rant News – Volume 2 Edition 4 – Nassau County Awards Ceremony, 2013

MERRICK FIRE DEPARTMENT Merrick Fire Department Unit Citation

On October 29, 2012 while Hurricane Sandy was unleashing its fury on Long Island, the Merrick Fire Department responded to numerous complex incidents in extremely adverse conditions. The actions demonstrated teamwork, cooperation and a high degree of risk to all member involved. Members of the Merrick Fire Department operated at a basement fire while flood waters were rising, putting themselves at risk while at the same time, containing the fire with minimal damage. They also responded to rescue a family of four who were trapped due to fast rising flood waters and while there were live power lines down in the vicinity. They were able to rescue the family and bring them to safety. This was one of numerous swift water rescues that the department made in the most dangerous of conditions. All of the rescues required a great degree of skill, improvisation, and were often done without radio communication due to water damaged equipment. For the high degree of risk and complexity of the rescues made the Merrick Fire Department received the Unit Citation.

Hearing one of the victims yelling for help, Brogan advised the person to retreat to a back bedroom and close the door. Both men attempted to make entry to the rear of the building but were unable and, instead made another attempt through the front but by this time the fire wss extending down the stairs.

As the 1st due engine stretched a line and began to advance on the fire, Ex-Chief John Nykiel and Lieutenant John Waldron made the 2nd floor and began a search for the trapped victims. There search was hampered by clutter in the upstairs hall but they ultimately made it to the front bedroom after passing the fire room, where they found an unconscious victim. ExChief Nykiel transmitted his findings over the radio which led Firefighter Anthony Mauro to make his way into the 2nd floor window from a ground ladder placed in front of the building. The three men were able to remove the victim via the interior stairs and transfer care to the EMS crew outside. As this victim was removed the Floral Park Fire Department truck company had arrived on scene and was instructed to search the 2nd floor for the 2nd victim. Lieutenant John Florio, Firefighter James Dodson, and Firefighter Vincent Hartenfels made entry to the 2nd floor rear bedroom and were able to find and remove the victim. As they got outside they began CPR until the victim was then taken by Nassau County Police EMS crews. Both victims later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. For their heroic efforts the following men received Silver Medals of Valor – Class II - Great Personal Risk: Lieutenant John Waldron, Ex-Chief John Nykiel, Firefighter Anthony Mauro of New Hyde Park. The following members of the Floral Park Fire Department received Bronze Medals of Valor – Class III Meritorious Personal Risk: Lieutenant John Florio, Firefighter James Dodson, and Firefighter Vincent Hartenfels.
