FD Rant News LONG ISLAND, NY

The #1 Publication for the Long Island Fire Service with the MOST and the BEST Coverage The 2013 Drill and Parade Season continued in the month of July with a lot of action across Long Island including events in Nassau and Suffolk. Now in our 2nd year of publishing we are, by far, the #1 publication for the Long Island Fire Service with the MOST and the BEST coverage. We may not have been around for 40 years but we know what our readers want, and that is more action, more photos, and more information about the “other side” of the fire service here on Long Island. Our correspondents are committed to capturing nearly every event so that you can be a part of the action. No other publication can even come close to the amount of information that we publish and what’s even better is that you can link directly to hundreds [even thousands] of photos of these events by visiting our correspondents photo galleries. The New York State defending champion West Hempstead Westerners picked up where they left off last year with a convincing win in the 7th Battalion Tournament and also the Town of Hempstead Tournament which were held on the same night in South Hempstead. The Brookhaven Town motorized tournament saw the Riverhead Ironmen make a statement with a big win in a rare combination Old Fashioned/Motorized Tournament. The Old Fashioned side of the slate featured the 5th Battalion Drill hosted by Oyster Bay Co. #1 with the Roslyn Highlanders and the Oyster Bay Teddy’s Boys in a close battle that was ultimately won by Roslyn. The annual parades also were underway with the always impressive Roosevelt Fire Department capturing 1st place overall in the 7th Battalion Parade hosted by the South Hempstead Fire Department. The combination 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battalion Tournament was held in Freeport and saw the Freeport Nighthawks and the Malverne Chipmunks grab 32 points apiece in an action packed event. The very next day saw the Selden Fire Department hosting a motorized invitational tournament and even better, the fans got to see the West Sayville Flying Dutchmen set a New York State Record in ‘C’ Ladder. But even that was not enough to stop the North Lindenhurst Piston Knockers from taking the overall prize with 22 points. The 4th Battalion Parade in Nassau followed with the always impressive Rockville Centre Fire Department once again capturing a 1st place prize in the county’s smallest battalion parade. The Hagerman Junior Tournament was held where the Islip Junior Wolves easily pulled ahead of the rest of the field with 39 points to secure the win. Be sure to follow us for the next 3 months as we continue to bring you the MOST and the BEST coverage of the 2013 Drill and Parade Season and also tell your friends and family members to subscribe today so they don’t miss out on the action: www.FDRantNews.com/subscribe.html As always, we want to hear your feedback. SEA CLIFF FIRE DEPARTMENT 67 Roslyn Avenue, Sea Cliff, N.Y. 11579

ORGANIZED 1884 CHIEF Daniel C. Whittemore FIRST ASSISTANT Ernest A. Longobucco, Jr. SECOND ASSISTANT Mark J. Vitale

BOARD OF WARDENS Ernest A. Longobucco, Sec. James J. O’Donnell, Jr., Treas. James P. Ajamian William Lanier, Sr. Richard J. Boehm Anthony E. Grella

Dear Merchant, On August 4, 2013, The Sea Cliff Fire Department will hold a benefit event for Michael Hallquest, a former Chief and longtime member of the department. In 2010, at age 27, Michael was diagnosed with brain cancer in the form of an astrocytoma brain tumor. A successful operation removed most of the tumor, although Michael still suffers from focal seizures. Michael is a longtime resident of the area. He graduated North Shore High School in 2001 and that same year he joined the Sea Cliff Fire Department. After obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration at Quinnipiac University in 2005, Michael joined the FDNY to fulfill his lifelong dream. Upon completion of the FDNY fire academy, Michael was assigned to Ladder 136 in Elmhurst, Queens. Unfortunately, after receiving his diagnosis in 2010, Michael was forced to resign from the FDNY after five years and to step down as Assistant Chief of the Sea Cliff Fire Department. In April 2013, Michael’s brain scan showed growth of his tumor. On June 15, 2013, Michael participated in the New York Brain Tumor Walk to raise money and awareness for brain tumors. Michael’s team, the Cell Crushers, ranked sixth and raised $12,138. Michael is currently undergoing chemotherapy to treat his condition. Unfortunately, insurance will not cover all of the treatments and costs involved. The Sea Cliff Fire Department is currently collecting merchandise and services for our event on August 4th. I am writing to request your support. By making any type of donation, you would be helping Michael directly in his fight to stop his cancer because all of the money raised will go straight to Michael’s medical care. Some examples of items to be donated include gift certificates and themed gift baskets. These items will be raffled off at the benefit. Your generous support would help Michael as well as give your business valuable exposure at our event. To recognize the generosity and support of our donors, we would like to display business information about the donors near all items and services donated. To help us support you, please be sure to include business cards and/or brochures that we can use to promote you and your generosity. Attached is a special event flyer with more information about this event. For additional information about the benefit event, please visit our website at www.seaclifffiredept.org. Thank you for your consideration and best wishes from all of us at The Sea Cliff Fire Department. Sincerely,

SOUTH HEMPSTEAD

Hosts the 7th Battalion / Town of Hemsptead Drill Story & Photos by Brian Olsen – LNBN

The 7th Battalion / Town of Hempstead Drill hosted by South Hempstead got off to a late start on Friday June 14th 2013, due to some evening rain. The weather let up around 7:45 allowing the drill to get underway with the running of Three Man Ladder. West Hempstead would grab a time of 6.80 for first place but wet track conditions would eliminate the running of the B Ladder and B Hose contests. Efficiency would be next and Hicksville would find themselves in first place with South Hempstead and Westbury on their heels. Some trouble with the timing equipment would force the officials to switch to hand time for the remainder of the night, as Efficiency Replacement got underway. West Hempstead and Hicksville would be the only two teams to earn times under the 30 second mark and this would clearly become a battle for 1st place between the two teams. As Buckets Started the Hicks were still in striking distance of the Westerners but would fall short. Westbury would find their way into second place in the event which would give them the point they needed to put them in third place overall. With the contest over the West Hempstead Westerners had taking first place in the 7th Battalion as well as the Town of Hempstead point standings.

The results for the 7th Battalion:

1st Place: West Hempstead (29 pts) 2nd Place: South Hempstead (17 pts) 3rd Place: Franklin Square & Munson (13 pts)

The Results for the Town Of Hempstead:

1st Place: West Hempstead (25 pts) 2nd Place: Hicksville (19 pts) 3rd Place: Westbury (13 pts) 4th Place: South Hempstead / North Bellmore (12 pts) FD Rant News Volume 2 Edition 9

BROOKHAVEN TOWN MOTORIZED Riverhead Ironmen Score Big Win Story and Photos by Kim Versheck – LNBN

FD Rant News Volume 2 Edition 9

Page 8

On the evening of June14th, 2013 the rain stayed just west of Ridge as the Brookhaven Town Tournament got underway. The night would be a combination of motorized and old fashioned contests, as the Brookhaven teams consist of both. Three Man Ladder followed by Individual Ladder would start the contest off with all teams running. B & C Ladder quickly followed and it became clear that it would be a close race between both sides of the field. As the sun set B & C Hose were ran but it was Motor Hose Replacement that gave the Motorized teams a lead in the overall contest. Efficiency Replacement gave the Old Fashioned teams their first chance to take some points in the hose events and it did just that. Efficiency and 2 into 1 followed, closing the door even further. Motor Pump went quickly and it was now time for Buckets. Without the scoreboard trackside it seemed a few had not realized that the Ironmen were in a tight race with the Extinguishers, as Buckets got underway. The contest ended with the Mighty Midgets filling the drum last and the nights points were announced. The Riverhead Ironmen had found their way to the top of the field with 38 points. This was the first time the Riverhead Ironmen had won a tournament since winning at Mastic’s Old Fashioned drill back in the early 90’s and while speaking with team members no would could put a finger on how long it had been since their last motorized win. The track became alive with fans as the Ironmen led the nights winners down the track proudly atop their B Rig. We would like to congratulate the Ironmen on their win, as well as the rest of the top five.

OYSTER BAY

5th Battalion Drill Hosted By Fire Co #1 Story by Kim Versheck – LNBN Photos by Mark Bellew – All Hands Fire Photos

After a few rainy days the sun was overhead on Saturday June 15th, 2013 for the start of the 5th Battalion Old Fashioned Tournament. The tournament was hosted this year by the Oyster Bay Fire Company #1 Teddy’s Boys as part of the company’s 125th Anniversary. Things got off to a rough start as problems with the timing equipment forced a move to hand time and the re-run of Individual ladder. With the switch to hand time, Roslyn came out of the ladder events with an early lead but the Teddy’s Boys were right behind them in the standings. Oyster Bay and Roslyn’s nozzle men had some issues breaking, in Running Hose allowing Bayville to take first and catch up with them in the overall standings. East Norwich would find second in the contest, their first points of the day and pushed the Teddy’s Boys and Highlanders further down in the contest. Running Hose Replacement would earn Roslyn back some points but Bayville would find first, to put them a point away from the Highlanders. Oyster Bay despite a little coupling problem managed to grab a couple points keeping them in the running. Sea Cliff after the first four contents had also found their way in to the top 5 along the Atlantic Steamers. With four contests in the books Efficiency Replacement would be the next event to be run and while the “wye” usually gives some teams a problem the event went pretty well for most part. Roslyn put in a sold run but the Teddy’s Boys slid by them to grab 1st place in the contest. Bayville missed the top 5 in the contest but was still in 3rd overall. With the three teams pulling away from the pack, the race for 1st place overall was still only a 5 point difference as Efficiency started. Oyster Bay would set the pace but was quickly passed by Roslyn with the only 9 second time of the contest. Glen Cove would grab a piece of the action but Bayville found third to stay alive as the contest ended. The Teddy’s Boys started off 2 into 1 with a strong run showing they were not going to make it easy for Roslyn. Glen Cove followed with an 11 second run leaving plenty of room for the field to find a spot and Roslyn not only found that spot but pushed ahead of Oyster Bay taking over first. With a few teams having issues with the “wye” the Atlantic Steamers and Bayville rounded out the top five. Roslyn had the lead at the start of Buckets but had not locked up their “three peat” just yet. Oyster Bay set the mark with a run of 26.86 and Glen Cove would take their run before the Highlanders would fill the barrel in 26.55 to lock it up for the day. Bayville would miss the top 5 in buckets but would take third in the overall and Sea Cliff managed to find the two points they needed for the top 5. The Roslyn Highlanders had now won the 5th Battalion Tournament for the third year in a row. The winners of the 5th Battalion Drill: 1st Place: Roslyn Highlanders (33 Pts) 3rd Place: Bayville Oak Neckers (19 Pts) 5th Place: Atlantic Steamers Rough Riders (10 Pts)

2nd Place: Oyster Bay Teddy’s Boys (29 Pts) 4th Place: Sea Cliff Indians (11 Pts) Link to Gallery - Late Night Buff Network Link to Gallery - All Hands Fire Photos

FREEPORT

Hosts the 2/3/4 Battalion Tournament Story and Photos by Kim Versheck – LNBN

On Friday evening June 21st 2013, the Freeport Fire Department hosted the annual 2/3/4 Battalion Old Fashioned Tournament. The tournament was held at Baldwin’s track due to some issues at Freeport’s training center caused by Sandy. As the night got underway with 3 Man Ladder the Malverne Chipmunks took first in the event over the Freeport Nighthawks by a 1/100th of a second with a time of 7.15. The Lynbrook Tumblers and East Rockaway Cold Ducks rounded out the finishers for the event. The now dreaded, timing problems appeared once again during the running of Individual Ladder forcing a switch to hand time and a restart of the event. Cart Ladder began and with most of the field running in the 9’s but Malverne found first place again with a time of 8.16. The Freeport Nighthawks also found their way into the 8’s when they climbed to a time of 8.44 to hold on to second place in the overall standings. As the ladder events wrapped up the Freeport Clam Diggers and Baldwin Tomcats found their first points of the night; filling in the top 5 after Lynbrook’s run of 9.20. Malverne missed the top five in Running Hose after having some trouble with the nozzle. This would allow the Nighthawks to take the lead for the first time in the tournament with a run of 11.89. The Tomcats and Clam Diggers would earn valuable points to put them in striking distance of first place but more importantly into the top 5 overall. The Lakeview Sparks and Point Lookout Smokin Seagulls had also now earned their first points of the night as the event ended.

FD Rant News Volume 2 Edition 9

Page 16

The drill was now moving at a nice pace as Running Hose Replacement started with Lynbrook setting the time to beat at 24.25. The Smokin Seagulls would see the top 5 for a bit as Baldwin and Malverne found the top 5 behind Lynbrook. Lakeview knocked Point Lookout down before the Nighthawk’s time of 26.34 would earn them the points needed to stay in the lead as the event ended. With one point separating the top two at the start of Efficiency Replacement the sun was now set and the stands had filled in some more. Baldwin would be the first team to break the 30 second mark with a run of 27.02 but Malverne would find their way past them with a 27 flat. The Chipmunks would now watch the rest of the field to see if their time would hold but as the Nighthawks tripped the target they had landed a time of 26.18 putting Malverne in second and increased their overall lead. Efficiency would turn out to make this contest even closer. Malverne would take first place and the Nighthawks landed in third behind Baldwin. This had now tied the two teams for first and put Baldwin within striking distance of first. Point Lookout and Lynbrook would take the last two spots in the top 5 and give Lynbrook a push in the overall standings.

A time of 9.50 would be the mark to beat in 2 into 1 as Lynbrook started off the contest. As the field progressed the “wye gave some a bit of an issue but for the most part the times were close. Malverne found their way past Lynbrook and Lakeview grabbed a piece of the top 5 just ahead of East Rockaway. The Nighthawks found themselves on the line needing to beat a 9.06 and as they ran down the track managed to beat it with a time of 9.02. They were now in the overall lead by one point and a new tie for third place had developed between Lynbrook and Baldwin. Buckets always a deciding factor would now grab the attention of all, as Lynbrook took the line. The barrel was filled by the Tumblers in 52.54 leaving plenty of wiggle room for the rest of the field. Baldwin quickly followed and put up a time of 35.60 breaking their tie with Lynbrook and locking up third place. The next few teams had missed the mark but all in attendance were at least entertained as the Cold Ducks took the course and their Bagpiper played as they filled the barrel. After the entertainment, Malverne took the course and all attention turned towards the arch as their buckets were passed. A time of 29.89 was now the magic number as the Clam Diggers ran next. They would land behind Lynbrook but now everyone was on their feet and buckets were being counted out loud while the Nighthawks sent their buckets up the ladder. A time of 35.51 was announced as the event and the crowd paused for a moment to listen for the overall standings. The Malverne Chipmunks and Freeport Nighthawks had tied with 32 points apiece. Invitational Motorized Tournament Story and Photos by Kim Versheck

On the afternoon of Saturday June 22nd 2013, 17 teams took the track in Ridge for the Annual Selden Invitational Tournament. Central Islip would take first in 3 Man Ladder, with Islip on their heels. West Hempstead, East Islip and North Bellmore rounded out the top 5 as the contest ended. B Ladder started with Sayville putting up a time of 5.84 had set the mark but North Lindenhurst would quickly move in above them with a run of 5.36. West Hempstead would be next to break into the 5’s and with their 5.12 would land at the top of the scoreboard for the rest of the contest. Islip would find second place at 5.31 and the only other team to break into the 5’s would be East Islip. West Hempstead and Islip would now find themselves tied for first as the timing equipment was moved for C Ladder. North Lindenhurst would be the first team into the 9’s in C Ladder with Central Islip following them in to the top 5. With the middle of the field missing the 9 mark North Bellmore would join the leader board and the Islip Wolves would again show that their ladder team was hot this year taking over the lead in the contest. East Islip would take the Rinky Dinks out of play before West Sayville took the starting line. As the Dutchmen climbed back down the ladder the first “GENERAL JUDGES” of the year was announced. The West Sayville had set a new C Ladder State Record with a time of 8.81!!

As teams readied for C Hose Islip was the overall point leader with 12 points but the contest would make the race for first place even tighter. Selden would start of the contest with a time of 14.26 but would not stay on the leader board for long. The Piston Knockers would trip the target at 12.35 setting the new time to beat and Central Islip would fall short as the followed with a 12.46. West Hempstead would be next into the top 5 and East Islip would join shortly later. West Sayville’s time of 12.39 would just miss the Piston Knockers and take second in the contest. There were now 5 teams all within striking distance of Islip as the lights were moved for the start of B Hose. Sayville once again would start things off with their time of 9.92 and the next few teams seemed to have some problems breaking past their time. Central Islip would be the first team to step ahead with a run of 7.95 and West Hempstead would shortly later find themselves in a tie with the Hoboes. Riverhead would follow and gain their first points of the day when they turned a run of 8.94. As the rest of the field washed out on nozzle East Islip got it together and took first place with a time of 7.75. FD Rant News Volume 2 Edition 9

Efficiency was next and the top 5 were all now within one point of each other as the contest started. Bay Shore would be the first team to break into the 9’s at 9.25 and grab their only points of the day. North Lindenhurst would follow and a time of 9.12 would land them in first place. Cutchogue would be the next team to see the leader board when they ran a 9.77 and would hold on to the top 5 as North Bellmore and Deer Park joined them. West Sayville would unseat the Panthers and take third in the contest. North Lindenhurst had now taken the overall lead and West Sayville was now part of the tight point race going on. Selden would start off Motor Pump and as the target was tripped a time of 7.53 was now on the scoreboard. North Lindenhurst came off the line and tripped the target at 5.89 taking the top spot on the scoreboard. West Hempstead would be next to take a spot in the top 5 with their run of 7.27 but Riverhead followed with a run of 6.45 to jump ahead of them. The East Islip guzzlers would turn in a time of 6.57 pushing West Hempstead down the list once again. West Sayville would also run in the 5’s but would land a 5.95 putting them in second place.

The sun now setting, Buckets got underway with North Lindenhurst in the overall lead they took the line and put up a time of 26.11. Central Islip would be the first team to step ahead of the Piston Knockers and West Hempstead shortly later found themselves on the scoreboard also. HAGERMAN

Junior Tournament Hosted Story & Photos by Kim Versheck – LNBN Additional Photos by John Walthers

The Hagerman Fire Department hosted their annual Junior Tournament on Sunday June 23rd 2013. With not a cloud in the sky things got underway shortly after 10:00am and Central Islip took the lead after the running of the Junior Ladder Contest. Intermediate Ladder would put Bay Shore on the heels of Central Islip, who again took the contest. Islip would close the gap coming in first in Individual Ladder and would now find themselves in second in the overall standings. With the running of Cart Ladder Islip would now take the overall lead with 13 points and Central Islip would sit second with 10. The contest would also put Lindenhurst and West Sayville tied at 7, as well as Hagerman and Bay Shore tied at 6. With the water tested to a time of 4.76 Junior Cart Hose was ready to get underway. The first couple teams had run in the 20’s making Selden’s time of 18.45 the new time to beat. Bay Shore stepped up to beat this time with a 13.80 and was followed by Islip with a 14.13. The only other teams to land under the 18 mark would be East Islip with a 14.38 and Central Islip with their 14.82. Islip had now taken a lead of 5 points in the overall standings and Cart Hose was ready to begin.

FD Rant News Volume 2 Edition 9

Lindenhurst would run a 10.94 the only 10 second run of the Cart Hose and would take first place. Farmingville, Selden and Bay Shore would stay in the tops 5 as Islip would take second place with a run of 11.10. The rest of the field had some troubles missing the top5 and the event ended with Islip now pulling away with 21 points. Cart Hose Replacement would begin with Hagerman grabbing a time of 22.55 and with the next few teams runs in the mid 30’s Selden would find a spot at 25.80. Islip again came down the track strong with a 21.81 to take over first in the event. West Sayville and Blue Point would both find runs in the 24’s to take the last two spots in the top 5. With three events left, Islip was clearly pulling ahead but the race amongst the rest of the top teams was heating up. Hagerman again put up a strong time at the start of Junior Efficiency Replacement and Medford got in to the top 5 for the first time since the ladder events. Lindenhurst would find a spot on in the top 5 before Islip took the lead once again. East Islip would follow and was the last team able to break in to the 30’s to round out the contest. At 31 points Islip had now mathematically locked up first place in the drill and it would now be a race to find the remaining four spots. The “Wye” contest would prove to
