This edition brings you the MOST and the BEST coverage from the William St. George through to “County Weekend” but the staff of FD Rant News was hard at work covering more than just that. We stepped up our game making sure to cover the road to states! We followed the Juniors as their season heated up and one exciting NYS Junior Drill took place. I traveled up to Spencerport to photograph and cover the NYS Old Fashioned Tournament. And as the NYS Motorized Tournament and Parade took place on Weir Street, I was joined by some of our staff as well to bring YOU, the readers, an even more in depth view of the weekend. So keep an eye out for the September edition. I apologize that this year’s releases were not as timely as last year but after Sandy, things have been a little rough balancing my time between the publications and rebuilding. I would also like to personally thank members of the Spencerport Fire District and Red Onions Drill Team for their awesome hospitality during my visit and while they were down for States; Looking forward to seeing you guys soon.

Kim Versheck - Parade and Drill Associate Editor As we enter into late summer many of the events on the Parade and Drill schedule have been completed but there are still some events left on the schedule. As we all celebrate with our friends and families this Labor Day weekend, the annual Labor Day Drills hosted by the Hagerman Fire Department in Suffolk and the West Hempstead Fire Department in Nassau will provide some excitement and fun for everyone before the kids get ready to go back to school. Many of us were treated to a special weekend in Hempstead this past week as the New York State Motorized Drill and Parade was hosted by the Hempstead Yellow Hornets and the West Hempstead Westerners. In our September edition of the FD Rant Parade and Drill we will have over-the-top coverage from our team who spent the entire weekend on Weir Street. This month’s edition contains numerous events sanctioned by the NYSP&DTC as well as several annual community events. With the water test done, the stands were now filling in as C Hose got underway. Oyster Bay would grab first place putting Sayville in to second place in the contest. Manhasset-Lakeville would catch their first points of the day when they took third place, leaving Glenwood and East Farmingdale to round out the top 5. Baldwin returned to the track at the start of B Hose and showed they were still there with a first place time of 9.10. Glenwood and Manhasset-Lakeville would be the only other teams to grab 9’s in the contest. Sayville would find one point to further their lead and East Farmingdale would find the top 5 for the last time of the night. Efficiency would be started with a time of 11 flat by Baldwin and held onto fourth. Sayville was first into the 10’s and had now mathematically locked up the tournament. Brentwood found second place which now put five teams in a race for second place and all were within two points of each other as Efficiency ended.

But the Sun was high overhead that day, as 10 teams set up their camps at Amityville beach for the Running of The Zach Bernstein Memorial Drill. As the day started off everyone gathered at the foot of the arch were they joined Zach’s Family for a dedication ceremony. The Amityville Villains dedicated the arch and track in the memory of Zach Bernstein with a plaque presented to his family. This was followed by his family and team members the uncovering an identical plaque mounted to the arch. Zach was only 23 years old when he was killed in a tragic motor vehicle accident in which some of teammates survived back in April 2011. The Amityville Villains wish to keep Zach’s memory alive buy trying to make this an annual tournament. The Amityville Villains would lead the day off setting the pace for 3 Man Ladder with a time of 7.44 but the Copiague Yellowbirds would quickly climb past them with a run of 6.72. The Freeport Nighthawks and Bayville Oak Neckers would join the top 5 before the Miller Place Extinguishers finished the event with a second place 7.15. Running Ladder would be a contest of 8’s leaving the first few teams out of the top five. The Nighthawks grabbed the first 8 with a time of 8.24, followed by the Oak Neckers with a 8.09. Malverne’s Chipmunks slid past the Oak Neckers by 2/100ths to take the lead. The Rocky Point Rum Runners tied with the Nighthawks run of 8.24 and the Extinguishers found fifth as the ladders were put away for the day. The Oak Neckers were now in the lead by 1 at 6 points and a three way tie for second place had formed with the Yellowbirds, Chipmunks and Extinguishers with 5 points apiece. The stands were now full as the water test wrapped up and Running Hose got underway. The Villains and Yellowbirds put up times in the 10’s before the Nighthawks grabbed a 12.52. This left the Chipmunks and the Merrick (N. Merrick) Buckeyes to grab the last two spots on the board. A straight set of 2’s started off Running Hose Replacement with the villains 22.22 and the Yellowbirds were no far off with a run of 23.34. The Nighthawks tripped the target at 19.69 taking the lead in the contest and had now made their way into the running for the overall top 5. A time of 23.07 would give the Oak Neckers a few points and the Extinguishers landed a 21.06, this now put the overall top 6 teams all within 3 points of each other Efficiency Replacement would leave a few wet and the overall lead would be taken by the Nighthawks but the race for first place was still only a difference of 1 ½ points. Though Medford’s luck seemed to be keeping them on the outside of the top 5 all day, they didn’t get totally shut out when they picked up a point for fifth place. The Freeport Clam Diggers would also find their only point of the day in Efficiency before The Yellowbirds would take first and flip the overall lead back into their favor over the Nighthawks. The Chipmunks grabbed a spot on the leader board and the Buckeyes would squeeze into second place to round out the top 5. Copiague and Freeport were now pulling away from the pack but had not locked it up just yet.

.Two into One got underway and the Yellowbirds were the first team into the 9’s with a run of 9.18 but the Nighthawks were not going to lay down and followed, tripping the target with a run of 8.15. The Chipmunks found an 8.68, keeping them in the race for first overall and a time of 9.46 would allow the Rum Runners a brief visit to the leader board. An 8.91 by the Buckeyes would slide them into the middle of the pack and the Extinguishers 9.24 ended the Rum Runners stay in the top 5. All attention turned to buckets as the crowd moved towards the arch and began to count off teams buckets. Amityville would set the time to beat for the last time when they filled the barrel in 26.46. Copiague would follow and as their last bucket went up the ladder they earned a 24.14 taking the lead in the contest. The Nighthawks 28.16 would fall short of first place and after Malverne tripped the light at 25.30 the Nighthawks would need to hold on to at least one point to keep second place. The next few teams jumped on and off the scoreboard but Miller Place with a 28.02 locked up the standings as the day ended. Copiague had won the Zach Bernstein Memorial Drill.

After the first five teams had run Cart Hose, Blue Point’s 12.70 would set the time to beat and Central Islip did just that with a time of 12.43. As Islip tripped the target there was a brief pause and the announcement came over the PA “GENERAL JUDGES!! “ After the equipment and Id’s where checked and all was in order, Islip’s Junior State Cart Hose Record time of 10.35 was announced. East Islip and Bay Shore earned a couple of 11’s to finish off the event. Coming into Cart Hose Replacement, only Central Islip and East Islip were within striking distance of Islip. Hagerman found a 25.86 and West Sayville a 26.04 but it would be Hagerman that would hold on to fifth place as the event continued. Blue Point (23.66) and Lindenhurst (24.97) were the next two teams to join the top 5. Central Islip did not take the track, so Islip left the line next and took a lead when they earned a 20.94. Bay Shore would finish the event stopping the clock at 20.67 for the number one spot in the top 5 but Islip now had pulled way ahead of the field.

Central Islip was the only team in reach of a tie with Islip as Junior Efficiency Replacement started but would fall short after some trouble in the contest earning overtime. Lindenhurst would earn some important points holding onto second behind Islip. Islip Terrace would find themselves on the bubble till East Islip knocked them out, leaving West Sayville and Blue Point to find some points in the event. Blue Point stepped up their game taking first in the “WYE contest and was now in the top 5 overall. Islip missed the mark but had mathematically locked up their day. Lindenhurst would also now find second in the contest and in the overall standings but would still have a few teams in reach with one event left. Central Islip and Bay Shore would also find some points but it would now come down to Efficiency. As the event got underway Islip Terrace turned in a time of 11.79 and West Sayville took an 11.19 to steal some much needed points out of the race for second. Farmingville also stole a point when their 11.96 earned them their only point of the day. A time of 10.10 by Lindenhurst would lock up that number two spot before Central Islip had some problems, missing the top 5 in the event. Bay Shore would find a 9.90 for first in the Efficiency event and jumped ahead to third in the overall standings. As the day ended Islip had won yet another tournament and was now way ahead in the overall season point race with only two tournaments left in the season.

Joe Hunter Memorial Tournament Story and Photos by Kim Versheck –LNBN

On the evening of July 3, 2013 the stands were filling in as the Joe Hunter Memorial Drill got underway. Both the Main Transit Slo Pokes and Henrietta Ol’ Henries traveled down this year to join the Long Island teams in the running of the drill. 3 Man Ladder got off to a quick start and Westbury would be the first team to find a 6. As the next few teams visited the score board, Central Islip jumped ahead of the field with a 6.23. Islip and West Sayville also joined the top 5 behind Central Islip leaving Copiague in fifth, but West Hempstead would unseat them as the contest ended. As the ladder was taken down the sounds of revving motors and squealing tires filled the air, as the officials set the lights for B Ladder. Hempstead would start off the contest, but a time of 6.59 would have trouble staying on the scoreboard as the contest continued and Hicksville put up the first 5 of the day with a 5.39. Westbury followed with a time of 5.36 taking the lead on the scoreboard and Henrietta’s 5.56 would be next to find a place in the top 5 as the next few teams missed the mark. Central Islip would miss Westbury by a 1/100th at 5.37 to join the leaders before Islip grabbed a time of 5.14 taking first in the contest. West Hempstead would find a 5.49 at the end of the contest to unseat the Ol’ Henries and round out the top 5.

Hicksville would start off C Ladder with a time of 9.83 and they were quickly passed by Westbury’s time of 9.32. Henrietta found a 9.89 to take the third spot on the scoreboard as the rest of the field leaped on and off the board with times in the 10’s. Islip would be the next team to take the lead with a run at 9.02 and West Sayville would follow falling just short of Islip at 9.03. Henrietta would be knocked off the scoreboard when West Hempstead found the only 8 of the contest at 8.93. Islip with 13 points was now in the lead as the ladder contests ended. Westbury and Central Islip were tied at 8 points, West Hempstead at 7, West Sayville 6 and Hicksville with 3. C Hose did get underway but the weather brought the contest to a stop after Main Transit ran. After a brief delay the decision was made to continue with the running of the last three events. As the sun set, Efficiency got started with a couple mid 9’s by Hicksville, North Lindenhurst and North Bellmore but Copiague would jump ahead with a time of 9.15. Bay Shore tripped the target at 8.88 to find their first points of the drill and take over the lead. Central Islip would come in at 9.12 and the Islip would quickly take over second with their 9.09. West Sayville would be the last team to find the scoreboard with a time of 9.22 to unseat West Hempstead.

Motor Pump would begin with the field in the 7’s but North Lindenhurst would put up a time of 6.74 to take the lead. Bay Shore’s time of 6.97 would be the next on the scoreboard before Central Islip took over the lead with a time of 6.48. This put Central Islip 1 point behind Islip in the overall point standings after Islip failed to make the top 5 in the contest. A time of 6.86 would put West Sayville into the running and West Hempstead slid into third as the contest ended with a time of 6.83. Central Islip and Islip were now only one point apart as teams lined up for buckets and the crowd gathered along the fence. Hempstead would find a 26.57 to start things off but Hicksville followed with a 22.70 to set the mark. As teams jumped on and off the score board Main Transit grabbed a piece of the score board with a time of 22.88. Central Islip took their shot with the Hoboe Nation counting off buckets and landed a time of 22.22. Islip followed but fell short of Central Islip but their time of 23.08 but would hold on in the top 5. West Hempstead was last to fill the barrel and a time of 20.90 would take first in the contest. Town of North Hempstead/Oyster Bay Motorized Tournament Story and Photos by Kim Versheck – LNBN

After being rained out back in June, The Town of North Hempstead / Town of Oyster Bay Tournament was held on Saturday July 6th 2013. As the day got underway the sun was high in the sky and Oyster Bay would start 3 Man Ladder with a 7.43. Hicksville would quickly climb ahead with a 6.88 and Roslyn would run an 8.54. New Hyde Park would grasp a 6.75 taking over first place and Carle Place would round out the top 5 with a time of 7.07. As the contest continued, Port Washington found a time of 7.01 which unseated Roslyn and the rest of the field would fall short of the 7 mark as the contest ended. The lights were quickly set and B Ladder got underway with a time of 6.03 by Oyster Bay. Hicksville would have some problems grabbing a no time before Roslyn came in a little deep and after a straight climb put up a 16.72. The first run in the 5’s of the contest would come from New Hyde Park, as they grabbed the rung at 5.55. ManhassetLakeville got on the scoreboard with a 7.78 and Westbury’s 6.24 would round out the first 5 on the scoreboard. Port Washington came in with the second 5 of the contest, a 5.63 to push Roslyn out of the top 5. As the last two teams left the line Levittown landed outside the safety zone and Glenwood would fall just short with their 8.04. C Ladder would start off with some timing issues and after a few re-runs the decision was made to switch to hand time. Carle Place would start off the contest after the switch to hand time but ended up beyond the patch. Westbury would put up a time of 15.58 to start things off but Port Washington quickly came in with a 9.67 to set the mark. Levittown with a 14.49, would also visit the scoreboard for the brief time before Oyster Bay took their 3rd shot at C Ladder earning a 9.99. Hicksville’s time of 10.19 followed by Roslyn at 10.91 rounded out the top 5 and for the first time it was not Roslyn in that dreaded 5th spot. It would be Levittown to get knocked out this time, as New Hyde Park finished their run with a call for the “General Judges.” With the contest over and the inspection of equipment done, New Hyde Park’s new C Ladder Hand Time State Record time of 9.10 was announced.

As the water test was finished, Oyster Bay took their shot at C Hose earning a 13.49 to get things underway. Hicksville and Roslyn would be far off the mark before New Hyde Park took the course. As the Termites tripped the target the call for “General Judges” was announced for the second time of the day. As the contest continued Manhasset-Lakeville turned in a time of 17.34 and Westbury slid in behind New Hyde Park with a time of 12.91. Port Washington’s 15.05 would grab fourth place and Levittown would miss the top 5 at the end of the contest. As the officials finished their inspection and hose tests the second record of the day was announced. New Hyde Park had set the NY State Hand Time Record for C Hose at a time of 12.61 Roslyn running out of turn, would start off B Hose but would end up with a re-run after a stop watch issue. Levittown followed with a time of 13.15 and some nozzle trouble would put Oyster Bay at 14.40. Hicksville also would have a little trouble and would land a time of 13.96. New Hyde Park came off the line next and once again took the lead with a time 8.21. Oyster Bay for the first time of the day would not place as ManhassetLakeville’s time of 8.49 pushed them off the scoreboard. Carle Place and Westbury’s nozzle men would both have some problems keeping them out of the running before Port Washington would join the top 5 with a time of 10.73. After Glenwood missed the mark, Hicksville was eliminated by Roslyn’s re-run time of 8.33. With three events left New Hyde Park was in the lead with 25 points but Port Washington at 15 and Oyster Bay at 10 were still in striking distance. The race for the remaining spots was all within 4 points of each other and it was anyone’s game as Efficiency started. As the first three teams had some minor issues New Hyde Park would be the first to step into the 9’s with a run of 9.23. Manhasset-Lakeville would follow at 9.70 and the frogs would pick up their first points since 3 Man with a time of 9.75. Port Washington left the line next and with a time of 9.18, would be the first team all day to land in first place above New Hyde Park. Glenwood would turn in a time of 9.65 to slide into third and land their first points of the day..

Motor Pump would be next and Oyster Bay would be first on the scoreboard with a 7.73. Hicksville would come in at 6.74 with what appeared to be their cleanest run in pump so far this year. With the next few teams running overtimes, New Hyde Park would not place in a contest for the first time of the day. Carle Place grabbed part of the action when they tripped the target 8.54 before Westbury found themselves on the overtime list. Port Washington left the line knowing this was their opportunity to take some much needed points and as they tripped the target the third call for “General Judges” echoed over the PA system for the day. As the scales came out yet once again and the hose was tested the Port Washington Road Runners had set a new NY State Hand Time Record of 6.46. With Levittown adding themselves to the overtime club Glenwood picked up the fifth spot with a time of 8.73. The sun started to set as Buckets got ready to a start and New Hyde Park would need to take at least 2 pints to lock up their lead. Oyster Bay got things started with a time of 30.58 and were quickly passed by Hicksville’s 27.84. Roslyn stepped up the mark to beat when they finished with a time of 26.49 and New Hyde Park would end up being almost a second of pace with their 27.43. New Hyde Park would now watch to see if their time would hold. Manhasset-Lakeville’s 29.90 would unseat Oyster Bay before Carle Place would find the top 5 at 27.75. Port Washington would be the last team into the top 5 with a time of 28.51, though it was short of knocking New Hyde Park out of first in the overall standings it was enough to earn them second place overall

Suffolk County Motorized Tournament Story and Photos by Kim Versheck – LNBN

Heavy rains postponed the tournament the night before but the sun had started to peek out on Saturday morning July 13th 2013. As teams began to arrive in Central Islip for the Suffolk County Motorized Tournament, it was all hands on the track to help dry it off. After the delay, Central Islip got 3 Man Ladder underway with a time of 6.26. Farmingville would follow up with a time of 6.94 and Brentwood would come in at 7.43. A time of 6.43 by West Sayville join Central Islip at the top of the scoreboard as Bay Shore rounded out the first five with a time of 10.81. Selden and North Lindenhurst would miss the mark but a 7.36 by Deer Park would unseat Bay Shore. Islip would find the top five next with a run of 6.53 knocking out Brentwood. Lindenhurst’s time of 6.81 would close the gap even further taking the last 7 off the scoreboard but Farmingville would also find themselves on the outside as East Islip put up a time of 6.64 at the end of the event. As the wooden ladder was taken down to ready the track for B Ladder the roar of B rigs filled the air and Central Islip would take the line. A time of 5.29 by the Hoboes would set the mark as the event started and the Bandits would follow with a 7.94. West Sayville made quick work of taking the lead over when they put up their 5.18 and Bay Shore would find their way on to the scoreboard with a time of 6.59. North Lindenhurst’s time of 5.66 would round out the first five on the scoreboard before Deer Park’s 7.06 knocked Farmingville out of the running. It started to become cloudy once again as C Ladder began and Central Islip broke into the 8’s with a time of 8.99 to get things rolling. Brentwood would run an 11.41 before West Sayville landed 3/100th’s short of the Hoboes with a time of 9.02 to take second place. Bay Shore would run a 12.41 and North Lindenhurst a 10.38 but Redskins would not be staying in the top five after a 10.96 by Deer Park. After Islip failed to grasp and hold, Lindenhurst found a time of 9.34 to take third and knocked Brentwood out of the contest. As Sayville stalled out, a few gave a hand to push them off the track at the end of the contest. With ladders out of the way Central Islip had 14 points and was followed by West Sayville at 13, East Islip 5, North Lindenhurst 4, Lindenhurst 4, Islip 3 and Sayville 1. As the officials began to test the water, the skies darkened and the rain started to fall. After a brief meeting and no sign of the weather letting up, the decision to cancel B & C Hose was made and the last three events would be run. Central Islip once again would get things rolling and their time of 8.95 to start of Efficiency. With the next few teams in the 10’s or higher Bay Shore tripped the target with a time of 9.27 to move into second place and North Lindenhurst would land right behind Bay Shore at 9.28. Islip would find a time of 9.66 and would be followed by Lindenhurst at 10.00 to lock up the top five, preventing the last few teams from scoring.

Nassau County Motorized Tournament Story by Kim Versheck – LNBN Photos by Brian Olsen – LNBN

After a rain filled Old Fashioned Tournament the night before at the Four Towns Training Center in Merrick, the sun was trying to break through the clouds on Saturday morning July 13th 2013. As twelve teams arrived for the Nassau County Motorized Drill everyone pitched in to help the Bellmore Fire Department dry the track the best they could and after a brief delay the drill was ready to get underway. New Hyde Park would start off the 3 Man Ladder contest with a time of 6.74 and Carle Place followed with a 9.59 leaving the door open for the rest of the field. Port Washington with a 7.02 and North Bellmore at 7.10 would help fill in the top 5, before Hicksville stepped into the lead at 6.62. Westbury would turn in a 6.53 to take the lead and Roslyn would find a time of 6.70 slipping into third place. As the three remaining teams took their shots West Hempstead would take over the number five spot with a time of 6.78. A time of 5.55 would be put up by New Hyde Park at the beginning of B Ladder to set the mark. Carle Place and Port Washington would both put up 7’s before North Bellmore found a time of 5.84 to join the top 5. Hicksville took the lead with a time of 5.40 and the next few teams replaced the earlier 7’s with some 6 second runs. Roslyn with a 6.15 would be the only team with a 6 to stay in the top 5 five and West Hempstead would take the line as Westbury awaited their fate. The clock was stopped at 5.22 unseating the Turtles and giving the Westerners first place in the event.

The sun had now broken through the clouds as C Ladder started with a time of 9.48 by the Termites. As the next few teams ran in the 10’s or higher the Hicks would find a time of 10.18 putting themselves in second place for the time being. Carle Place would be the first to be unseated and would be followed by the Rinky Dinks when the Turtles time of 9.57 took over second place. Levittown would miss the mark before the Highlanders climbed into first place with a time of 9.11. As Oyster Bay finished off the contest with a time of 10.02 they would step into fourth and take Port Washington out of running. As ladders ended there was now a three way tie for first place between New Hyde Park, Hicksville and Roslyn with 9 apiece. West Hempstead followed in the point race with 6 and North Bellmore would find themselves tied with Oyster Bay at 2. C Hose would get off to a quick start with the Frogs running a 15.66 but the Road Runners would trip the target at 12.68 to set the mark to beat. Though North Bellmore briefly visited the top 5, it would be the termites that would hold on fifth place after the Hick’s 13.38 and the Minute Men’s 15.80 rounded out the top 5. Westbury and Levittown would follow but fall short when Roslyn found a second place time of 12.82. With New Hyde Park out of the top 5 the three way tie was now broken and the Highlanders where now in the overall lead. After missing in C Hose the Termites came out looking to place in B Hose and with time of 8.36 they did just that. The Frogs would miss at the hydrant earning an 11.43 but the Road Runners would find an 8 when they put up a time of 8.87. The Rinky Dinks would come in at 9.45 and were followed by the Hicks at 10.64 to set up the first top 5. The Minute Men found the next 8 tripping the target at 8.63 and unseated the Frogs. After the Turtles and Rebels missed the top 5, the Highlanders would find first place with a time of 8.11 and would knock out the Hicks. The Rinky Dinks would also find themselves out of the running as the Westerners jumped ahead with a time of 8.26 to take over second place. With the event over Roslyn was pulling away with 18 points but the tied Termites and Hicks where not far off at 12 points.

Efficiency would get underway with the Frog finding a time of 9.97 and Port Washington would clock in at 9.21. The Rinky Dinks would run a 10.12 before the Hicks tripped the target at 8.82 taking the lead and what could be some much needed points. A time of 9.85 would put the Minute Men in the top 5 before a time of 9.55 by the Turtles would unseat North Bellmore. As the field progressed Roslyn would fall short with a time of 10.04 but the Teddy’s Boys would find a 9.71 to knock out the Frogs. The Westerners would follow with a time of 9.06 to join the top 5 and push out the Minute Men. The overall point race was now only separated by a few points with two contests left to run. New Hyde Park would leave the line first in Motor Pump and as the target was tripped they would start the contest off with a time to beat of 7.95. After Carle Place put up the first overtime of the event Port Washington would take the lead with a 7.52. A couple more overtimes would make the score sheet before Manhasset-Lakeville’s 8.70 joined the top 5. Westbury would jump ahead of the pack with a first place time of 7.07 and Levittown found a place in the top 5 with their run of 8.38. As the field continued the dreaded Overtime was announced a few more times and West Hempstead would fall just short but the Rockville Centre Woodlanders would take that last spot with a time of 8.46. Coming out of Motor Pump the point standings were as follows: Roslyn 18, Hicksville 17, Westbury 15, New Hyde Park 15, West Hempstead 14, Port Washington 13, Manhasset-Lakeville 3, Oyster Bay 3, Carle Place 2, North Bellmore 2, Levittown 2 and Rockville Centre 1.

As the crowd counted along, the Termites set the pace with a 28.74. Carle Place would fall in right behind them with a time of 30.45, before a run of 25.91 would put Port Washington ahead in the standings. Manhasset-Lakeville would put up a time of 31.12 to take North Bellmore out of the top 5 before Westbury filled the barrel in 25.72 to take the lead in the contest. After Levittown failed to earn a time, Roslyn took the line needing at least 3 points to take the tournament and break the current tie between the Hicks and Turtles. As the buckets went up the ladder the Highlanders filled the barrel with a time of 28.74. Roslyn had failed to break the tie but had now managed to join the tie and would be in a three way tie for first place as the field finished up the contest.
