LEADING THE KNIGHTS: Ira Miller returned for his third tenure as men’s and women’s tennis coach in August of 2005. The 2011-12 campaign marks his 15th season at the helm of Fairleigh Dickinson’s men’s squad and 14th year with the women’s team. In the fall of 2004, he was inducted into the Fairleigh Dickinson University Athletics Hall of Fame. Miller began coaching the Knights as head coach of the men’s team during the 1984-85 seasons and tackled the dual coaching role a year later. During his first stint at the Metropolitan campus, he guided both the men’s and women’s teams to a first-place finishes. He returned after graduate school to resume his role from 1994-98, leading the men’s team to three-straight conference titles. Miller has been named NEC Coach of the Year nine times, including winning it on the men’s and women’s side in 2012. He was also recognized in 2006, 2007, and 2008 with the men’s side. Prior to Fairleigh Dickinson, Miller served as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Drew University from 1998-2005. At Drew, Miller became the all-time winningest women’s coach in seven seasons at the helm. Miller graduated cum laude in 1977 from Clark University, where he was a four-year letter winner, with a B.A. in English and earned his MFA in screenwriting from the American Film Institute. He has taught at both Hofstra University and Fairleigh Dickinson and has published many instructional articles in leading tennis magazines. 2011-2012 Season The Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s tennis team beat six-time Northeast Conference Champion Quinnipiac by a score of 4-2 in the NEC championship match to secure a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The 2012 title marks FDU’s third NEC women’s tennis championship and first since winning back-to-back honors in 1987 and 1988. Headlined by No. 1 singles player Anna Rapoport, a junior from Moscow, Russia, the Knights have won 11 of their last 13 matches entering their first round showdown with Virginia. Rapoport, who was named NEC Player of the Year, First Team All-NEC for singles and Second Team All-NEC for doubles, shined in her first season for the Burgundy and Blue

with wins in 18 of 21 singles matches. For their play during the 2011-12 campaign, all six starters earned NEC First or Second Team recognition for singles. Two of FDU’s doubles pairings were also honored by the conference this season. Fairleigh Dickinson Athletics Hall of Fame member Ira Miller also led the men’s team to the NEC title, to help FDU become the first school to win both titles in the same season since Quinnipiac did it in 2006. In the history of the NEC, the sweep of the men’s and women’s titles has happened nine times, with the Knights accomplishing the feat in 1988. FDU’s 16 wins are the second most in Miller’s career on the women’s side for a singles season.
