Welcome Welcome everyone to our first Yourbid cattle sale, this is a huge step for us as a business and without the nudge of Covid this might not have happened quite as soon as it has. In our minds we always wanted to take create an on farm cattle sale similar to our annual ram sale but just didn’t feel we had the numbers to make it worthwhile.
We feel that we have achieved that and with over 100 breeding females bulled annually to the best bulls we can source, we are able to cull hard and only present the best for sale.
Now with Yourbid and its unique format we have the confidence we need to take the plunge and sell from the farm under ‘The Luing and the Short of It’ banner. We hope you enjoy the process and find something that suits your needs.
Our Luing cattle come from either our own Sutherland herd or the herd of cattle we manage for RW Durham & Partners, Scotsburn, both of these herds have been founded on Cadzow Bros, Isle of Luing genetics. Although the sale cattle are here at Fearn, the herds are situated on hill land on outlying farms.
Our cattle are raised on forage based systems with bulls housed during their first winter and heifers are outwintered on either fodder beet or silage based TMR behind a hotwire. They are then rotationally grazed in their second summer with the bulls receiving a light bite from August onwards whilst the heifers stay on grass till October/November when silage is introduced. Bulls are housed in October and fed a silage based TMR with being allowed out on a daily basis for exercise. They have been semen tested by Kenny Johnston.
We live in challenging times and as often the case when challenge arises there are opportunities, which when identified can change the way people act and think. Our team at Fearn has certainly risen to the challenge, working hard to pull this event together. It has been a huge team effort and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in making this sale happen.
For over 25 years we have bred Beef Shorthorn cattle and throughout that time our aim has been to create a herd of functional maternal cows which don’t need excess pampering.

2019 Born Beef Shorthorn Males
Comment: Nevis is certainly the best white bull we have ever bred and whilst I may be biased I think he’s possibly the best white bull I have seen. He is top 5% for calving ease, gestation length, milk, eye muscle and top 1% for IMF. An easy fleshed Godfather son who would add a splash of colour to any herd. 6
Comment: NC500 like the route itself is long with plenty in the middle, another Godfather son with handy figures being top 5% for 400 day weight, milk, carcass weight, eye muscle, terminal index and self-replacing index. Like his paternal brothers he’s and easy fleshing bull which would complement many herds. 7
Comment: North Star has always caught the eye, he’s a big upstanding bull with power and presence, from an exceptional female line (dam classified EX90) and out of Elmer whose sons are making their mark in many herds throughout the north. His full brother, Lerwick sold to Jock Gibson of Edinvale farm and Macbeth’s butchers Forres where he is doing a great job producing replacement breeding heifers and steers for the butchers shop. 8
Comment: Non-Registered is as his name suggests unregistered and out of one of our grade up cows, Abbey G1160. He is a tank of a bull with an eye muscle in the top 5% and would be ideal for crossing over longs stretchy commercial cows. Another Elmer son who’s crossbred sons have finished very well for us either as bull beef in the early days or as steers of grass latterly. 9
Comment: Northern Lights stood out as a calf, he’s a really smart roan bull with some handy genetics in his pedigree. Another Godfather son with decent figures, milk top 10% and rib eye top 5%. His half brother Morlich is lot number 13 and mother J378 has one daughter retained for breeding whilst her recent daughter will be retained. 10
Comment: Northern Legend has the highest milk figure of any of our 2019 born bulls which is in the top 1% for the breed. He’s a smart roan Kippen son out of heifer who hails from an extremely strong female line.
11
Comment: Naholo again by Kippen and a heifers calf but this time out of one of our NZ families, this bull has some useful stats with his eye muscle and maternal index in the top 1% of the breed. His SRI and IMF are also top 5% which make this eye catching bull a useful package. 12
Comment: Nonu just like his namesake the NZ rugby player this fella is solid! Another Godfather son this time from the NZ Phyllis family this lad has some set of figures backed up by plenty length and body. His eye muscle at +5.9 is the largest in our sale and easily in the top 1% of the breed as is his TSI whilst at +69 his SRI one point of the top. His granny Austin’s Phyliss was a cracking correct cow we bought in NZ to flush aged 13. 13
Comment: Nel (WP) continuing with our rugby theme is our only Jimmy son in the sale. He’s an eye catching roan bull who’s father is doing a great job producing females for us at Fearn, his daughters are long, clean and will form a big part of our breeding program going forward. Solid breeding on the dams side, she classified EX90 whilst Elmer in any pedigree is notable. 14
15
2018 Born Beef Shorthorn Males
Comment: Moray is the first of our 2018 born bulls and boasts the highest milk figure of all our bulls on offer which is also in the top 1% for the breed. He’s the longest bull we have and would be ideal for short thick cows who don’t have an abundance of milk. 16
Comment: Mey has been used as a two year old successfully settling cows in calf. He not breaking any records in terms of figures but comes from an excellent family line who have always delivered for us at Fearn. Like his maternal grandfather he’s extremely easy fleshing and easy going. 17
Comment: Murdo was also used this summer on a handful of cows, another Jono son with Elmer as a maternal grandfather this bull will breed excellent females with his dam scored EX91. This bull would suit someone wanting to put a little size into their herd. 18
Comment: Fearn Morlich half brother to Lot No 5, hurt is ear during a discussion with one of his mates, he’s a useful bull, figures not as strong as some but he’s a well balanced bull worthy of consideration.

2019 Born Beef Shorthorn In Calf Heifers
Comment: Fairy Clipper N1684, top 5% for calving ease and top 1% for eye muscle sired by Godfather with a dam classified EX91. Her maternal brother Fearn Morangie sold for 8000gns last year in Stirling and another brother was sold locally whilst many sisters are retained in the herd. Ran with Dunsyre Nimrod (08/06/20 - 05/07/20) then Firefox of Upsall (05/07/20 07/09/20). Scanned in calf on 05/10/20 - due 06/05/2021. 21
Comment: Isobel N1685, a cracking heifer a blend of Godfather and antipodean genetics with top 5% milk, TI and SRI along with a whopping +7.1 eye muscle which is easily top 1% as is her maternal index. This would be James’s pick of the bunch. Ran with Dunsyre Nimrod (08/06/20 - 05/07/20) then Firefox of Upsall (05/07/20 07/09/20). Scanned in calf on 05/10/20 - due 27/03/2021. 22
Comment: Phyliss N1691, again a balance of genetics just like the last, our highest figured heifer in our sale, top 1% for milk, eye muscle, TSI, SRI and MI. Her mothers calf as a heifer made it as a bull and now works for one of our regular customers in Aberdeenshire. Ran with Dunsyre Nimrod (08/06/20 - 05/07/20) then Firefox of Upsall (05/07/20 07/09/20). Scanned in calf on 05/10/20 - due 27/03/2021. 23
Comment: Lassie N1697 another young lady with an interesting background, antipodean again but a different maternal line. Top 1% for milk, eye muscle and top 5% for TSI, SRI and MI. Her older brother was part of our 2020 Stirling team, selling successfully. Ran with Dunsyre Nimrod (08/06/20 - 05/07/20) then Firefox of Upsall (05/07/20 07/09/20). Scanned in calf on 05/10/20 - due 05/06/2021. 24
Comment: Monique N1698 goes back to one of our original Calrossie cows, she’s a twin out of our biggest cow on the farm who classified RX91. Top 5% milk, Eye muscle, TSA, SRI and MI. Another Godfather daughter, who’s dam has bred consistently well for us. Ran with Dunsyre Nimrod (08/06/20 - 05/07/20) then Firefox of Upsall (05/07/20 07/09/20). Scanned in calf on 05/10/20 - due 27/03/2021. 25
Comment: Fairy Clipper N1705 by Godfather and closely related to lot 3 North Star on the female side, her more classified EX90 and maternal granny bred bulls to 10K. This is John’s favourite in the batch and like many of the others she has decent figures. Top 1%for eye muscle, IMF and top 1% for SRI and MI. Ran with Dunsyre Nimrod (08/06/20 - 07/09/20). Scanned in calf on 05/10/20 - due 22/03/2021. 26
Comment: Fairy Clipper N1750 by Godfathers full brother Lord who sold to Balnabroich, she’s closely related to lot No5, Northern Lights on the maternal side and again has decent figures with TSI, SRI and MI in the top 5%. Ran with Dunsyre Nimrod (08/06/20 - 05/07/20) then Firefox of Upsall (05/07/20 07/09/20). Scanned in calf on 05/10/20 - due 01/04/2021. 27

2019 Born Beef Shorthorn Maiden Heifer
Comment: Bonny N1766 didn’t make the weight to be bulled as a yearling, no shame to her she’s a heifers calf with above average figures and combines cracking paternal grandparents with some antipodean genetics on the dams side.

Semen and Reference Sires
Comments By the Dakota of Upsall, Godfather was used briefly before we sold him as a 2 year old for 10,000gns in Stirling. When Coldrochie decided to sell we went to view him pre-sale and thought that buying him back was worth considering. We didn’t intend to pay what we did but are delighted with his progeny and the way that his figures have continued to grow, he is a trait leader for 5 individual traits and is amongst the highest bulls in the breed on all three indexes. 33
Comments We should have used Elmer more than we did in his early years, we didn’t quite realised what we had, an extremely easily fleshed bull with great feet and temperament who has bred some outstanding females for us along with bulls which have easily been sold from farm hence the reason we didn’t get to Stirling with many. We AI’d thirty cows to him in 2020 so look forward to getting more of his calves on the ground in spring 2021. 34
Comments Another easy fleshing gentle bull who was quite a character and who left us cows with character, again we could have possibly kept him a little longer but the financial controller sold him when I went away on a rugby tour!
35
Comment: Jimmy is another embryo, this time from the highest priced cow at the Austin’s sale, Bonny 08064 and Broughton Park Diplomat from Australia. He’s a big stretchy bull and is leaving fantastic females, he’s good on his feet but wouldn’t have the thickness that Jono, Elmer or Godfather did.
Comment: Jono was one of our embryos from New Zealand which came as a result of a flush using some of the best cows from the Austin’s dispersal (Lassie 03002) and semen from Australia (Kevlyn Downs Embassy). He was an easy fleshing bull of moderate frame who has left us multiple heifers which calved in 2020 for the first time, unassisted and with plenty milk.
36
Comment: Kippen had a tough first winter, he got listeria which gave him a squint whilst stunting his growth but despite this he turned out ok, we used him on some cross cows at first and when we saw his calves thought he would be worth a turn with our stud heifers. He worked well but that’s where the fairly tale ends, his luck run out and he broke a leg when another stock bull broke in with him, a real shame as we are pleased with his progeny and one son departed in the summer for pedigree work.
Comment: Fearn Lord was full brother to Godfather and sold privately to a pedigree herd. Like his brother, an easy fleshing bull with bombproof temperament.
37
38
Service Sires
Comment: Dunsyre Nimrod was bought from Carey Coombs in 2020 as a junior herd sire, he’s a smart roan son of Sutherland Bundaberg with good calving figures which should knit well with Godfather genetics.
Comment: Firefox of Upsall was also bought in 2020 as cover for our existing bull team which was on the young side this season. This Mandalong Super Elephant son is eight years old and shows no sign of age, he tidied up nicely behind our AI mob and Nimrod.

UNDERSTANDING THE BREEDPLAN PERFORMANCE RECORDING INFORMATION IN THIS CATALOGUE Only Beef Shorthorn GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds.
Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny. GROWTH MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves.
ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait. ACCURACY An accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives. Accuracy below 75% should be considered low. CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.
200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.
DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny.
600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.
DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving. BIRTH AND FERTILITY GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth.
MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Smaller, or more moderate EBVs are generally more favourable. CARCASE CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days.
BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.
EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.
SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. 42
turn off at 19 months of age. There is emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter at around 580 kg live weight (310 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.
RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size. IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Shorthorn sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour.
Terminal index The Shorthorn Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Shorthorn bulls over dairy cross cows to breed steers and heifers to turn off at 19 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 580 kg live weight (310 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system.
Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter. Maternal Index - The Maternal Index is designed for a commercial Beef Shorthorn cross herd that is focussed on breeding herd replacements and on weaning as many and as heavy calves as possible at 8 months of age. It estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow mated, for an example Beef Shorthorn Euro cross commercial cow herd targeting the production of pasture grown calves. Steers and heifers are weaned and marketed at an average of 350kg live weight at 8 months of age for further finishing or as replacement heifers.
Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 19 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females. If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher Calving Ease Direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.
The Beef Shorthorn GROUP BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values contained in this Sale Catalogue were compiled by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) from data supplied by the breeders. Neither the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society nor the ABRI oversee or audit the collection of this data.
Self Replacing index - The Shorthorn Self Replacing index is aimed at a Shorthorn herd selecting replacement females from within the herd while breeding steers and excess heifers to 43

Luing Reference Sires Luing Rustler Purchased as a 2 year old, still going strong at 7 years of age, if he looks at a cow he tends to put it in calf. Easy fleshing and a sensible size.
Luing Scarba Also purchased as a 2 years old, a taller rangier bull than Rustler and not quite as easy going.
Luing Nero Nero came to us from the isle of Luing as an aged bull coming back on his own stock, he was used for two seasons before being sold, a solid red bull with stretch and thickness.
Luing Major Another who arrived later in life, stayed for a few years before continuing his career on another farm. He left some cracking females, was easy to handle, was of moderate size and went about his job in an efficient manner.
