HOW DOES THE LEADING INNOVATOR IN IGNITION AND DIESEL COLD-START RESPOND TO THE CHALLENGES OF TOMORROW? A TALK WITH GIUSEPPE DE MASI, BERU DEPARTMENT MANAGER/ PRODUCT MANAGEMENT AFTERMARKET

BERU - PERFECTION BUILT IN • True innovator • Impressive OE pedigree • Global No. 1 in glow plug technology • Complete range with excellent coverage • Made in Germany

Giuseppe De Masi Department Manager, Product Management Aftermarket BERU Systems

“One of the key drivers in the next few years is environmentally friendly technology. This has been the focus of our R&D for a long time”, De Masi explains. “To improve fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions, while guaranteeing optimum performance, BERU is developing new technologies for gasoline and diesel engines.” 9

How do BERU products meet the demands of the latest generation of gasoline engines?

How does BERU answer the needs of new requirements regarding diesel cold-start?

“BERU has offered system solutions for virtually all applications in the field of ignition coils for 40 years, with its own factories in several countries for OE and aftermarket. The BERU Plug Top Coil with compression spring connection provides an intelligent solution for use at maximum ignition voltages. Its space-saving design guarantees a significant advantage, especially in terms of the limited space in modern engines. The new BERU Dual Coil Ignition System with two magnetic coils in one housing provides a significantly shorter ignition delay and better combustion stability over the whole engine speed range.

“Fuel savings, the reduction of pollutants and reliable cold-start play an important role in modern diesel engines. Diesel engines therefore need permanent monitoring of the combustion process in the combustion chamber. The next generation of BERU Pressure Sensor Glow Plugs (PSG) is already under development. Our Instant Start System (ISS) steel glow plugs, manufactured together with the corresponding ECUs as a system supplier, undergo permanent optimisation processes. To match these needs, BERU is working on enhancing measures for ceramic glow plugs and offers products that heat up faster than conventional ceramic glow plugs: up to 1,300°C in 3 seconds.”

As we speak, BERU engineers are developing ‘Ecoflash’, an innovative high-frequency ignition system for combustion, with considerably leaner mixtures and huge potential savings in consumption and CO emissions.” 2

How would you describe BERU technology? “BERU is a trusted development partner to all leading automobile manufacturers. Wherever the cars of the future are being created, BERU is in demand as an expert in ignition and diesel cold-start technology. Our tag line and goal is ‘Perfection built in’. We strive for perfection and respond to customer needs in the evolving global car manufacturer markets.”

EXPERT TIP

Do replace the left and right axial rods (A) and the rubber (B) at the same time in order to have the same wear.

Don’t only replace the damaged part of the axial rod, because the rubber will also be damaged and thus allow contamination from dust, salt, etc.

LINK STABILISER Do use a dynamometric key for the correct method for fixing the part.

Don’t use a torque gun as it risks breaking the part.

REPLACEMENT OF ARTICULATION PARTS Do use the appropriate tools for fitting or removing the ball joint and tie rod end.

Don’t use sharp tools (screwdriver or hammer) to fit or remove the ball joint and tie rod end as contaminants can enter the ball pin and cause rapid wear.

ABOUT FUN-EMOTION

DINDO CAPELLO and Ferodo on track together ®

18

Rinaldo ‘Dindo’ Capello, an Italian professional driver, has the instincts of a real champion. Winning his first race in a go-kart, his career was immediately on the fast track towards numerous victories in single-seater, GT and endurance racing, with a triple win in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Mainly driving Audi cars, Dindo has experienced not only the importance of performance, but also of safety and reliable automotive parts. Here’s a chat with a champion. When did you discover your calling was to become a racing driver? “The first time I drove a go-kart, on my 12th birthday, I immediately realised I wanted to be a racing driver. At 18, I signed up for a professional driving course, organised by the Italian Motor Sport Federation. At the end of the first week, the instructor suggested that I could drive a professional car straight away because he felt I had talent. The first steps towards making my dream come true…”

What’s your greatest racing memory? “I have lots of fond racing memories. But I think my best is winning my first race when I was 19. The 2008 Le Mans victory will also remain one of the finest, our team was far from being the favourite or the quickest, but we won and we were very proud of that!”

www.ferodoracing.com

What makes a good racing driver? “Not an easy question... You have to like speed of course. But for me, the main qualities are staying concentrated and focused on your goals and targets, always being serious, working hard and - obviously – having a car you can rely on.”

How important are reliable brakes in racing? “Brakes are one of the most important elements in a racing car. Over the last 10 years, I’ve felt a real improvement in them. In the past, we needed to change the brakes during a race, but now we can finish a complete race on the same brakes… And even drive for another 36 hours!”

You’ve been racing with Ferodo brakes. Do you feel a difference? ®

“A GT racing car is a heavy car with lots of restrictions, not that different from a normal road car in fact. Ever since I’ve used Ferodo brakes, I’ve really felt the difference. I’m more confident and drive with even more peace of mind.”

Does being a racing driver affect the way you drive, choose brands and car components? “Of course. It influences the choice for my own car, especially in terms of safety. That’s why I also rely on Ferodo brakes for my private car.”
