2011 marked the 30th anniversary of the UJA/Federation drive in our community. This is a very special milestone for our Federation. We are the newest organized Jewish community in the State of Florida, and probably one of the youngest in the country. As we embark on a new decade of service, we welcome you to join us in all of the Federation and community-wide events and programs that celebrate Jewish life in Southwest Florida.

Federation and adult members. Our annual People of the Book Community Cultural Event brings renowned Jewish authors to enrich our lives. The Women’s Cultural Alliance provides the opportunity to meet others who share similar interests. There are study groups in art, film, literature and other interest areas, and a strictly social component where you can have lunch or dinner, meet new people and renew friendships. We also support the Jewish Film Festival and Cultural Series conducted by the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island. Collier County, and during Florida Jewish Heritage Month. The CRC Annual Human Needs Award provides support for at-risk populations in our community. These are but a few examples of Jewish values. Basically everything that we do in this community and everything we make possible for Jews in need wherever they may be, derive direction from these values. I believe that the Jewish Federation of Collier County and its partners – our donors, the agencies and organizations – do an exemplary job. But do not think for one moment that all the work is done. I invite you; I urge you; I challenge you; take a role, play a part in connecting to make our community an even better place to live. Together we can continue to create a beautiful kehilla, a community, which can be proud of the work it does.
Who is “Federation” and what do we do?
he answer is simple: It’s you – and every member of the Jewish community of Collier County and the surrounding areas. The Federation is your center for Jewish Philanthropy. The Jewish Federation of Collier County is the thread that runs through the fabric of our Jewish community, its organizations and services, connecting us all. The Federation supports programs for Jewish people in need in Collier County, Israel and throughout the world, providing food for the hungry and counseling for the troubled, spearheading rescue and relief efforts for isolated Jews in distressed regions, and funding innovative Jewish educational and unity initiatives. The Federation creates a sense of community for thousands of Jewish residents in Collier County and its surrounding areas by creating and supporting programs to further Jewish learning, identity, pride and culture. Federation meets the challenge of providing for the needs of our Jewish brethren, wherever they may be, from young children and families to seniors. The Jewish Federation of Collier County is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing connection, advocacy, education and care for anyone in need through its network of beneficiary and constituent agencies and local Jewish organizations. While the Federation is doing so here, elsewhere other Federations and network communities are doing the
same; all are connected through the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). Founded on the principles of unity and dignity for all, today’s Federation Campaign has evolved into a major fundraising, planning and coordinating body of Collier County’s Jewish community. The Federations of North America are meeting places for Jews from all backgrounds, ensuring the continuity of the Jewish people here at home, through national initiatives, in Israel and in 60 countries globally. Through your support of the Federation’s Annual Campaign, you play a vital role in helping Federation “get the job done.” Think of it as a triangle: Federation, its agencies and you. So, if anyone asks you who Federation is – just point to yourself – because that’s where it all begins.
Where does the money go?
The local Campaign allocation process involves a committee of volunteers as well as Federation staff. They take part in this important process, which balances available resources against community priorities through a grant process. Additionally, several national organizations receive support from the domestic allocation. Internationally, your contribution works to support a broad range of social, educational and vocational needs throughout the Jewish world.

Federation Locally, the Federation makes an allocation to operate its Jewish Family Services division. And grants are made in support of a variety of educational and cultural programs conducted by our local synagogues, the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida and other local Jewish organizations. Our allocation to JFNA is distributed to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), which brings relief to the needy and works to revitalize Jewish life in 60
countries; the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), which rescues people from countries and resettles them in Israel; and for supplemental grants in support of special programs and projects that our community has embraced like Neve Michael Youth & Children’s Village in Pardes Hana, Israel, the Sapir Community Center in Kfar Saba, Israel, transportation and Shabbat dinners in Cuba, and the Progressive Synagogue Preschool in Kiev, Ukraine. Giving tzedakah to an umbrella organization like Federation, which then distributes it to a number of member agencies, has its roots in early Jewish history. In small towns and large cities, donations were given to a communal kupah as an expression of devotion to community and the entire Jewish people. It demonstrates a love of community that is without limitation.

The annual fundraising arm of the Jewish Federation is organized to secure maximum funds to meet the financial needs of its local, regional, national and overseas humanitarian organizations and beneficiary agencies.
Major Gifts and Lions of Judah Campaigns
Major Gifts and Lions of Judah are the premier fundraising divisions of the Jewish Federation. These divisions provide exclusive social experiences to the community’s leading Jewish philanthropists who give a major portion of the Annual Campaign dollars raised each year. These donors are dedicated leaders involved in Federation’s extended lifeline of humanitarian relief and support. Past Presidents of the Jewish Federation of Collier County were honored at the 2011 Community Celebration event. Community Outreach
Each year, the Federation hosts numerous events, affording the community opportunities to gather, socialize, network and connect. Here is a sampling of the larger ones: The Annual Community Celebration kicks off the new campaign with a lavish event and entertainment. Columnist Dave Barry and actor Henry Winkler were the special guests at recent events. The World of Jewtopia entertained the crowd in 2011. And for 2012, the focus will be on Israel, food, fun and the future. Entertainment will include mentalist Sidney Friedman as well as dancing and more time for socializing. The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples will host this February 11, 2012 event.

Federation The Evy Lipp People of the Book Cultural Event is usually attended by 600-700 people. Past guests include Alan Dershowitz, Jeffrey Toobin, Dennis Prager, Rabbi Harold Kushner and Bob Simon. The February 21, 2012 event features Ted Koppel. The event is free to Federation members. The Community Chanukah Celebrations in Naples and on Marco Island are always festive events with the lighting of the giant menorah, the Naples Klezmer Revival Band, local choirs, and greetings from local dignitaries.
Publications
The Federation publishes the Federation Star, a monthly newspaper that is mailed to over 3,200 Jewish households in the Collier County area. The newspaper is the one publication that ties together the Jewish community of Collier County and surrounding areas.

Community Relations Committee (CRC)
T
he Community Relations Committee (CRC) of the Jewish Federation of Collier County conducts outreach within the Jewish and general communities. It educates, informs and provides programs for the community on Jewish issues and experiences. It monitors state and federal legislation and its effect on the Jewish community, advocates for Israel, promotes separation of religion from government and public schools, provides programs on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism, and promotes religious freedom. The CRC sponsors several events during Florida Jewish History Month, including the annual CRC/Friends of the Library Naples Klezmer Revival Band, and co-sponsors the annual UN Holocaust Remembrance Observance, held at a local synagogue or church, featuring local clergy, a guest speaker and musical performances. The CRC also presents a major community event annually. On Thursday, March 22, the CRC, Catholic/Jewish Dialogue, FGCU Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Human Rights Studies, and the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida are bringing Fr. Patrick Desbois, author of
Holocaust by Bullets: A Priest’s Journey to Uncover the Truth behind the Murder of 1.5 million Jews, to speak at a community-wide event. For more information and sponsorship opportunities, contact Ann Jacobson at annrj5@aol.com.
Annual Human Needs Award
Several years ago the Federation Board and the CRC established a “Fund for Human Needs” to recognize organizations for their generous spirit and service to the entire community. It was another way for Jews in Collier County, as represented by their Federation, to practice tikkun olam, “bettering the world.” Grants have been made to the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Catholic Charities, St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Collier Council on Aging, the NAACP, the Collier County Education Foundation, Redlands Christian Association Literacy program, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, Baby Basics, Bedtime Bundles, the Shelter for Abused Women and Children, and the Senior Friendship Health Center.

T
he Federation Star, the monthly newspaper of the Jewish Federation of Collier County, is the one publication that ties together the Jewish community of Collier County and surrounding areas. If something local is happening that is Jewish-related, you’ll find out about it in the pages of the Federation Star. The newspaper was first published 20 years ago, and has gone through several design, paper, size and editorial changes. Typical issues have 32-44 pages. Each month, readers of the Federation Star get news and updates on all Jewish-related local events including the Marco Island Jewish Film Festival, holiday celebrations, book study groups and timely lectures. They also get updates from the area’s five synagogues and numerous local Jewish organizations. It’s the place they turn to for community news, the community calendar, candle lighting times, a business directory and much more. Ted Epstein, editor/designer of Connections, has been the Managing Editor since 2003 and has designed and produced the newspaper since the September 2007 issue. The Federation Star is mailed free to the Jewish households in the area and is

Arts & Culture Community Cultural Event Evy Lipp People of the Book event presents Ted Koppel
T
ed Koppel is a television news icon. We’ve invited him into our homes for more than four decades. Koppel was the youngest fulltime correspondent ever hired by ABC News. Incredible as it seems, forty-two years passed before he left that network. During those years, he received about every award ever given to a newsman. In addition to forty-two Emmys (works out to one each year at ABC – wow!), he was honored with two George Polk awards, eight George Foster Peabody awards, and eleven DuPont-Columbia awards (TV’s equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize). But that’s not all. Koppel also received more Overseas Press Club honors than the previous record holder, Edward R. Murrow. For twenty-six years, Koppel’s Nightline broadcasts were “must-see TV” for anyone awake at 11:30 p.m. Soon we’ll get to listen to his take on the world, right here in Naples! At the eighth annual Evy Lipp People of the Book Cultural Event, sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Collier County (JFCC), Koppel will report on “Breaking News: A Look Around the Globe.” The where and when of this fascinating news report are Temple Shalom, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. The why should be obvious: it’s TED KOPPEL. A secondary but no less important reason will be to honor Evy Lipp – after whom this Federation event has been named – to highlight her vision and support for the annual presentation. T
he Women’s Cultural Alliance (WCA) is an affinity group of the Jewish Federation of Collier County. The Women’s Cultural Alliance provides the opportunity to meet others who share similar interests. There are study groups in art, film, literature and other interest areas, and a strictly social component where you can have lunch or dinner, meet new people and renew friendships. New members are always welcome. Currently, nearly 700 women have joined the WCA. Membership in the WCA also makes each woman an official member of the Jewish Federation. Proceeds from WCA fundraising activities will benefit the Federation, Jewish Family Services and special activities of the WCA. To the right is a sampling of what the WCA offers. Hopefully, you’ll find something of interest and join the group. The WCA is a year-round group and has programs all summer long – the group calls it Summer Serendipity. To become a member, contact: Jane Hersch, President, 239.948.0003 or janehersch@comast.net For a Membership Form or more information on the current or upcoming month’s schedule, please visit www.WomensCulturalAlliance.com. share the magic with us. We are now solidly into our second decade while still younger than the giants – the San Francisco, Atlanta and Toronto Jewish Film Festivals. However, we show internationally acclaimed, award-winning films with the best and

biggest of the 60 or more Jewish Film Festivals in big cities across the U.S. and Canada. Most of our films are premiere showings for our part of Florida. Our film audience may not be aware of the rigorous process and enormous commitment of our Film Festival committee and the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island that is needed to determine which films will be screened. We preview dozens of new films of Jewish interest from all over the world, read the critical reviews, talk to other Jewish Film Festival Directors and discuss the pros and cons of the films under consideration. One basic rule, never violated, is that no film will be shown in the Festival that has not been prescreened several times by the Director. In some cities, if a film has been shown elsewhere it is assumed worthy of a showing in their festival, but this does not happen in our Jewish Film Festival. Our whole purpose in presenting the newest and best of films about Jewish experiences is to entertain and educate our own Jewish community and build bridges of understanding and friendship with our non-Jewish neighbors and friends. JCMI’s preseason December showing of 100 Voices: A Journey Home reaches out to the Polish people with song and prayer in a historic mission of reconciliation. In January, we screen The Yankles, a delightful comedy about Jews and baseball; in February, it’s Berlin ’36 about a Jewish girl competing in the Berlin Olympics, and La Rafle, with the setting in Paris, France; in March, we tell the story, on film, of the beloved writer, Sholom Aleichem. Come join us for this magical season. Get your tickets early for this eleventh year celebration of excellent film. See you at the movies! FGCU Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Human Rights Studies
I
n Florida Gulf Coast University’s first years, Rabbi Howard Greenstein, Ann Jacobson, Saul Stern and others developed a vision and a plan for a Judaic and Holocaust Studies Center. With strong financial support from the Ann Jacobson Fund and other local contributors, the Center was created in 2005. (Ann is currently a coDirector of the Center.) The Center organized an impressive array of activities. Among the more noteworthy: high school teachertraining workshops with the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida; an adult education lecture series on Islam, Christianity and Judaism at Temple Shalom, Naples; interfaith clergy seminars; a lecture by Deborah Lipstadt, the foremost
expert on Holocaust denial; and numerous artistic, musical and cultural events. More recently, the Center displayed the World War II-era boxcar acquired by the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida. In 2011, the Center held a fourth clergy seminar, hosted a human-rights symposium, offered film showings and lectures, and worked with the campus Hillel chapter on a series of events. ather Patrick Desbois will give a community lecture on Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church. He will also be the presenter at the annual Interfaith Clergy Seminar the following day at Florida Gulf Coast University. Fr. Desbois is well known for his work in locating thousands of mass graves of Holocaust victims in the Ukraine through interviewing hundreds of witnesses. He stresses the importance that these atrocities need to be revealed because there are still people who deny the Holocaust ever happened. Sponsors are still needed to underwrite this event. Any organization or individual interested in being a sponsor, please contact Ann Jacobson at annrj5@aol.com or 239.262.4880.

his is the only museum telling the story of 250 years of Florida Jewish life. Jewish Museum of Florida on South Beach is housed in two lovingly restored buildings that were formerly synagogues for Miami Beach’s first congregation. Both on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1936 Art Deco building features Jewish historical exhibits and boasts
a copper dome, marble bimah and 80 stained-glass windows while the 1929 building contains Jewish art exhibits. The core MOSAIC exhibit shows how Jews maintained their traditions and communities as they contributed to develop the state. Changing temporary exhibits focus on themes of Jewish history, art and culture—each with a Florida connection. Jewish history time
lines, films, Museum Store, Bessie’s Bistro, Collections and Research Center, a schedule of public programs that complement exhibit themes and guides complete the experience. Annual programs include Florida Jewish History Month and Jewish American Heritage Month (both initiated by the Museum), Purim events, Judaica Competitions and Breaking the Glass Ceiling Awards. Community Services ¡¡ Dr. Bernard Lublin has prepared two brochures which are available at Jewish Family Services (JFS)— “Breast/Ovarian Cancer and Jewish Inheritance” & “Medical Disorders of Disproportionate Jewish Inheritance.” Critical new information on Jewish Genetics and breast/ovarian cancers is not well known, either by most physicians or by the Ashkenazi Jewish community. The BRCA (BReast CAncer) mutations (three possible chromosomal mutations) occur in the population-at-large at the incidence of 1:800. Among Ashkenazi Jews, the incidence is 1:40. Please stop in to pick up your copies or call 239.325.4444 to have them mailed. You will also find valuable information, resources and links on the Jewish Genetics page at www.JewishNaples.org. ¡¡ Sharsheret has available publications ‘linking young Jewish women in their fight against breast cancer.’ Sharsheret is a national organization of Jewish breast cancer survivors. he Jewish Caregivers Support Group is a cohesive, understanding and caring group of women and men who are caring for loved ones suffering from many different diseases. Meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 10:30 a.m. Temple Shalom (4630 Pine Ridge Road, Naples) has kindly given the group the use of its Chapel. This is a free service to the entire Jewish community. Caregiving can be a job without clearly defined goals. This can lead to physical exhaustion, frustration, guilt and depression. At group meetings, participants can safely and privately talk about these concerns as well as share tips about community resources, major life decisions, and dealing with daily problems. Discussions include strategies to help participants cope with stress and enhance their ability to stay in control of their shrinking world. Florette Kahn, LCSW, is the group leader. She is a licensed retired psychotherapist who is also a caregiver for her husband Jack, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease. Phyllis Lazear helps organize the group. Community History Pioneers of the Jewish Presence in Naples and Collier County
In the early 1950s there were no admitted Jewish residents in Naples or Collier County because it was known that the community did not embrace Jews. However, between 1954 and 1959, four couples, independently of each other, came to Naples with their families, and were charmed by the city and its potential. The Gilmans and the Freschels, who were related, came together and went into business together. The Dinaburg and Luff families also arrived and found Naples to their liking. The Weinfelds discovered the city, invested in Naples and Collier County, made several business trips each year to Naples, but continued to live in New Jersey while their children were growing up. In 1969, they settled permanently in Naples. In 1954, however, when the Weinfelds first looked for a home in Naples, they had several offers turned down because of their religion.
But in 1969, such problems were not as widespread. By 1962, Gulf American Corporation was selling property in Golden Gate, and there were enough Jewish salesmen employed by the company to augment those Jews who were already here; together they formed the Jewish Community Center of Collier County (the forerunner of Temple Shalom). There were 12 original members, eight of whom were Golden Gate salesmen who left the community by 1970. There were four remaining “charter” members —Garson Dinaburg, William Freschel, Gabriel Luff and Arnold Rosen. In 1965, Avrum Chudnow, who was head of a corporation that was building in Naples and Ft. Myers, asked the Golden Gate management if there were enough Jewish men to form a minyan for a yahrzeit service for his brother. A minyan was arranged among the members of the Jewish Community Center, and in appreciation, the Chudnow family presented the congregation with its

first Torah. By 1970, the Jewish population had increased – retirees had become part of the Jewish community as well as professionals, retailers, and a few families with children. In 1982, a classified advertisement in a local newspaper attracted a nucleus of 60 enthusiastic and dedicated people who evolved into today’s Jewish Congregation of Marco Island, serving the Jewish community on Marco Island and the southern end of Collier County.
Jewish Education in Naples
In 1972, Joe Weinfeld determined it was his responsibility to provide for the Jewish education of the children in the community and started the Religious School. He appointed Eugene Linz chairman of the Religious School Committee. Linz taught Hebrew and conducted a group bar mitzvah in 1973 – the first in Naples. He also conducted the first Chanukah service on December 1, 1972, with 75 adults and children participating. The following year at Chanukah services, the Gilmans and Freschels presented a small Torah to the children of the congregation. In 1975, when a small Temple was built, the Religious School had 19 Many thanks to Helen Weinfeld, Temple Shalom Historian (appointed in March 1989), for providing most of the information for this article. Community History children. When the current building of Temple Shalom was erected in 1991, the school had 75 students. There are currently over 200 students. The first Youth Group was started in 1973. And a preschool at Temple Shalom held its first session in 1990.
Today
As you can tell by looking through Connections, the Jewish community in Collier County is thriving. The area is home to a vibrant Jewish Federation
(with a list of 3,200 Jewish households out of an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 in the area), five synagogues, numerous Jewish organizations, Jewish Family Services, an annual Jewish Film Festival, and the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida. Oh, and we’ve had a Jewish mayor for 12 years! Temple Shalom, which
“To all we say—we will grow in spite of ourselves, because it seems to be so ordained, so great is our community. T
he world was different in 1962. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy took Americans on their first televised tour of the White House and Astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. Locally, the county seat moved from Everglades City to Naples, ensuring inevitable growth, and a small but determined group of Jewish men and women defied the city’s conventional wisdom and came together as The Jewish Community Center of Collier County. In 1966, groundbreaking took place for New York’s World Trade Center, and Ronald Reagan was elected Governor of California. In that same year, the State of Florida issued a Certificate of Incorporation for The Jewish Community Center of Collier County, and the Jewish population of Naples began what was to be a steady increase. 1975 was a year of beginnings. Bill Gates founded Microsoft, and the Apollo-Soyuz Mission successfully marked the first joint US-USSR space mission. At the same time, the visionary leaders of The Jewish Community Center, wanting to insure a continued
Jewish presence in Naples, dedicated a mortgage-free building at 1575 Pine Ridge Road. The handful of original members had grown to 57 families. The year 1980 saw the start of diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt, and the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team defeat the Soviet Union. Closer to home, the building occupied by the original Jewish Community Center of Collier County expanded to include an educational wing, and this growing congregation underwent a name change, becoming Temple Shalom. Temple Shalom joined the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism) in January 1983. In 1988, land was donated so that a new temple could be built. Groundbreaking took place on February 28, 1989, and the first service was held on November 8, 1991. The membership had swelled to 375 member families. The Jewish presence in Naples was now undeniable. Construction of the Learning Center was funded by the temple’s Shalom 2000 campaign, and the new wing was dedicated in November 2001. The Religious School has em-

braced and educated over 200 students in each and every year since then! The Naples Jewish community is strong, and diverse, and growing in number. We are grateful to the twelve families who pioneered a Jewish presence in Naples. And there are now twelve hundred individuals who make up the family that is Temple Shalom. Temple Shalom has been a congregation for 50 remarkable years. Its members have prayed together, celebrated together, laughed, cried, learned and listened. They have shared and watched and raised their children. The walls were built by those who came before us, and the doors are held open for those yet to come. It is Temple Shalom’s 50th year; its golden anniversary. It is our time to insure the preservation of our heritage and provide for our future. The founding families of Temple Shalom made Naples a safe and welcoming place in which a Jewish community could thrive, and 50 years later, their legacy lives on. It is our turn now. Happy 50th Anniversary Temple Shalom, and may our children and our children’s children celebrate the 100th!

or modernized. Compounding the crisis was the arrival of hundreds of thousands of new immigrants, including Holocaust survivors, internees from displaced persons camps and thousands of Jews from Arab nations. On September 3, 1950, with his country financially overwhelmed, BenGurion convened a meeting of American Jewish leaders at Jerusalem’s King David Hotel. He then articulated a dramatic proposal: to engage Diaspora Jewry in economic development through creation of a company that would sell securities issued by Israel’s government. It was a fateful moment that President Shimon Peres hailed as “a vital chapter in Israel’s history.” Six decades of accomplishment In the spring of 1951, the new Israel Bonds organization began transforming the face of Israel. hroughout 2011, State of Israel Bonds celebrated its 60th anniversary. The organization’s remarkable success – worldwide sales exceeding $32 billion, the sweeping development of the land and a global partnership united in common cause with Israel – originated with two historic speeches. On May 15, 1948, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the birth of the modern Jewish nation. Almost exactly three years later – on May 10, 1951 – BenGurion proclaimed the birth of State of Israel Bonds. The period between the two momentous speeches was perhaps the most challenging in Israel’s history. Independence had been won, but at high cost. The war had taken 6,000 lives and left the nascent economy in shambles. Yet, every sector of the new nation needed to be developed, strengthened

Transportation networks connected all parts of the country. Today, proceeds from the sale of Israel bonds are utilized to help fuel a nation of extraordinary technological innovation. Dan Senor, co-author of Start-Up Nation, a revealing look at Israel’s cutting-edge high-tech prowess, noted the significance of the Bonds organization when he declared, “The spirit of Israel Bonds is reflected in this book.” So, although it took 2,000 years of dreaming, praying and activism to re-establish the Jewish homeland, the launching of Israel Bonds in 1951 ensured that it would take just a few short decades for Israel to be positioned among the world’s elite nations. Each June, the ATS offers a worldclass mission to visit the campus. This year’s trip will visit St. Petersburg (the one in Russia, not Florida!) before continuing on to Israel. The Naples Chapter of the American Technion Society (ATS) brings professors and students to the community to talk about their work and this extraordinary institution of higher education. The chapter offers a monthly lecture series from November through April, with plenty of opportunities to meet and chat one-on-one with visit-

Friends of the Israel Defense Forces
T
he strength of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which has been guarding the State of Israel since it declared independence in 1948, derives from the selfless determination and great capabilities of the young men and women who form it. At the age of 18, these courageous young people join the IDF, promising to uphold the difficult tasks of defending the State of Israel and guaranteeing the safety of those who reside within its borders. The responsibility of the Israeli government is to prepare and train these soldiers and provide them with the necessary tools. Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) has assumed the responsibility of providing these soldiers with love and support in
an effort to ease the burden they carry on behalf of the Jewish community worldwide. In 1981, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces was created as a notfor-profit organization with the mission of providing and supporting social, educational, cultural, and recreational programs and facilities for the young men and women soldiers of Israel who defend the Jewish homeland. It also offers these services to the families of fallen soldiers. FIDF operates through 15 branches around the United States and Latin America, located close to large Jewish communities. Thanks to an expanding donor base and exceptional generosity, FIDF has experienced unprecedented growth over the last few years.
FIDF proudly offers its support to soldiers and their families through a variety of unique and innovative programs. Providing financial aid to soldiers in need, granting academic scholarships to former combat soldiers, helping bereaved families, and sponsoring fun days for combat battalions are just some of their endeavors. Thanks to a low overhead, they ensure the needs of the soldiers are provided in the best possible way. Through FIDF missions to Israel, donors are able to visit bases, meet with soldiers, and tour the country. These opportunities reinforce the significant bond between the Jewish community in the United States, the soldiers of the IDF, and the State of Israel. ith the popularity of its Blue Box campaign and tree planting drives, many forget that 110 years ago, Jewish National Fund (JNF) purchased the land that determined the borders of the modern State of Israel. After 1948, JNF helped create new communities in Israel so that Jews from around the world would have a place to call home. Scientists at JNF Resource and Development centers discovered drip irrigation and new means of growing plants under arid conditions, bringing green to the desert. JNF took the leadership role during Israel’s water crisis, building over 210 reservoirs and water recycling centers, providing water to 1.5 million Israelis every day. JNF planted 250 million trees, created over 1,000 parks and recreational areas, built security roads, and educated students around the world about Israel, the environment, and their connection to the Jewish homeland. Today, JNF is taking a leadership role in developing and strengthening Israel’s final frontier – the Negev. or more than half a century, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has worked to help make Israel more secure by ensuring that American support remains strong. From a small pro-Israel public affairs boutique in the 1950s, AIPAC has grown into a 100,000-member national grassroots movement described by The New York Times as “the most important organization affecting America’s relationship with Israel.” Political advocacy is one of the most effective ways in which AIPAC works to accomplish its mission. Each year, AIPAC is involved in more than 100 legislative and policy initiatives involving Middle East policy or aimed at broadening and deepening the U.S.-Israel bond. AIPAC works to secure vital U.S. foreign aid for Israel to help ensure Israel remains strong and secure. AIPAC is working to promote strategic cooperation between the two nations, to develop sound U.S. anti-terrorist policies, and to share homeland security techniques and technologies. These efforts are critical to Israel’s security and to American interests in the Middle East and around the world. In addition to working closely with Congress, AIPAC also actively educates and works with candidates for federal office, White House, Pentagon and State Department officials, and other policymakers whose decisions affect Israel’s future and America’s policies in the Middle East. JC (American Jewish Committee), established in 1906 by a small group of American Jews deeply concerned about pogroms aimed at Russian Jews, determined that the best way to protect Jewish populations in danger would be to work towards a world in which all peoples were accorded respect and dignity. Over 100 years later, AJC continues its efforts to promote pluralistic and democratic societies where all minorities are protected. Some key areas of focus for AJC are: • Combating anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry • Promoting pluralism and shared democratic values • Supporting Israel’s quest for peace and security • Advocating for energy independence • Strengthening Jewish life
Advocacy Groups AJC’s approach, tackling a breadth of interests in a deliberate and diplomatic manner, contributes to a success that gains trust, earns access, and most importantly, produces results. Focus on Youth The PJ Library
®
T
he PJ Library, a widely acclaimed national Jewish children’s book gifting program, made its debut in Collier County in October 2011. The PJ Library is funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in partnership with Jewish Family Services (JFS) and local community donors. In 2009, The PJ Library was selected by Slingshot as one of the 50 most innovative Jewish programs in North America. What does The PJ Library do? Since December 2005, The PJ Library program has been mailing, free-of-charge, monthly Jewish books and music CDs to families with young children. In our community, the children can range from 6 months to 8 years. These books and CDs encourage families to explore Jewish culture together. All books are chosen for their potential to inspire parent-child moments and memories. They can be humorous, and they can be poignant. They range in titles from No Matzah for Me! to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Books can be used to spark discussions about differing faiths and cultures in a way that children can understand.
One of the most important aspects of The PJ Library program is that it creates a portal into the Jewish community for families with children, no matter their religious affiliation. In fact, one of the goals of the program is to bring Jewish families who have no affiliation at all into the Jewish community. S
tatistics have shown that our Jewish youth have a much greater sense of, and connectivity to, their Judaism from having attended Jewish summer camps and teen peer group trips to Israel. We recognize this and have established a scholarship fund to encourage and assist families in affording these experiences for their children. The Federation also provides grant support for other youth programs including Birthright Israel and Hillel – The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life nationally and on Florida college and university campuses. Our community’s Jewish Camp/Israel Experience Scholarship Fund is comprised of monies contributed by the Jewish Federation of Collier County, Temple Shalom Sisterhood, Temple Shalom Men’s Club, and some very generous private donors in our community. Partial scholarships are offered for educational programs and experiences in Israel and Jewish summer camps, available for Jewish children residing in Collier County. There is a set amount of money budgeted each year, while the number of applicants varies from year to year. The amount of each scholarship depends on individual need as well as the number of children requesting scholarships. It is our goal to make scholarships available to all eligible applicants. We consider applications for admission to Jewish camps – URJ (Union of Reform Judaism) Camp Coleman, USY (United Synagogue Youth) Camps and all other qualified Jewish camps. The application deadline is November 30, 2012 for summer 2013 activities. Contact the Jewish Federation at 239.263.4205 or your local synagogue for a Scholarship Application.
