Workshops Description W1: Researching archives and special collections - Deirdre Wildy (Head of Special Collections & Archives, QUB) Sourcing and consulting archival and special collections materials can be challenging for experienced researchers not just for those embarking on independent research for the first time. This workshop aims to introduce and support the development of research skills in those students requiring access to materials in archive and research collections. It will also raise awareness of the need to develop archival intelligence and artifactual literacy. W2: Interdisciplinarity: combining digital ethnography and literal/cultural studies - Dr Tori Holmes (Brazilian Studies, QUB) This workshop will focus on how digital ethnography can be used within literary/cultural studies research. It will also consider the methodological and ethical issues that can arise in interdisciplinary projects which seek to research both texts and practices. W3: The ethnographic interview - Dr Evropi Chatzipanagiotidou (Anthropology, QUB) The workshop will introduce participants to the interview process and a wide range of interview techniques. We will discuss some major theoretical, methodological and ethical aspects of interviewing, especially when ‘sensitive’ or contentious topics are involved. Participants will also engage in practical exercises that contribute to skills development and will have the opportunity to give and receive feedback. In the last part, we will discuss how to transcribe, code and analyse interviews and how to incorporate them in texts and broader narratives. W4: Working with archives and special collections: reading and transcribing handwritten texts Kath Stevenson (Special Collections and Archives, QUB) Accessing primary materials is of crucial importance to researchers but the practicalities of encountering and deciphering handwritten texts for the first time can be daunting. Using materials from Special Collections and Archives in the McClay Library at QUB, this introductory workshop considers some of the paleographic challenges faced when working with manuscript materials and offers some practical tips for reading and transcribing texts in an unfamiliar hand. W5: Performing as research - Dr Ioannis Tsioulakis (Ethnomusicology, QUB) The ‘performance turn’ in social sciences brought the documentation and analysis of active praxis in the centre of enquiry since the 1980s. However, performance as research has yet to take its place within the methodological toolkit of researchers in the field. This workshop will discuss how we can transform performance from an object to be observed to an experiential process through which social insights can be gained for a wide array of research environments, as well as how performance can be valued and recognised as a research output in itself. W6: Playing, learning and teaching - Carmine Rodi Falanga (Coop. Soc. Muovimente) The workshop will introduce Gamification and explore its potential and applications on Learning and Teaching. From suggesting tips and tools for Small-Group Teaching (e.c. Seminar/Discussion Class) and Lectures, to applying principles of Gamification in developing curricula, games and exercises.
