THE BARN FOR CASAROTTA The Casarotta, is not only a physical place, but it’s a close-knit group of individuals from different backgrounds and walks of life with the common goal to participate actively in the construction of their homes in a sustainable manner.

“our place for the personal expression” The decision to renovate an old farmhouse was dictated not only by its beauty, but also by the fact that this type of building was already designed to accommodate different families, linked by kinship time. In this situation, the architect must relate not as the only protagonist of the transformation, but as one who has the tools and the technical knowledge to support the choices.

The intent of the community members of Casarotta is to renovate an old farmhouse situated in the hamlet of San Bartolomeo di Cherasco. The decision to renovate an old farmhouse was dictated not only by its beauty, but also by the fact that this type of building was already designed to accommodate different families, linked by kinship.

“Restructuring as a journey The metamorphosis of this space will have to respect not only the pre-existence, but also the mentality of the design choices that support the restructuring of the residential core of the farm already during construction.

PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTION The principle that has been applied to the project is to better understand the existing building to change as little as possible the conformation. Some of the reasons that influenced the construction of the old barn now been superseded, given that the function will be changed. Others are still relevant, and should be taken seriously. - the relationship with the threshing floor; - exposure to the south; - the prevailing winds from the mountains; - relationship between form and function; - locally available materials and construction techniques known.

THE POOL The will of the group is to create a bathing place that is inserted into the surrounding environment with the least possible impact, so the “traditional “pool is an element too artificial and wasteful. For this reason the goup decided to use a BIO-POOL

THE YURTA THE NEW GARDEN “The garden should not be just an ornament, but a place of meditation and Community.”

THE FUNCTIONS On the ground floor of the first building will be located the carpentry workshops, repair and maintenance. The second floor will be instead used as a guesthouse to host travelers, tourists, and visitors from other communities visited. Both the guest that the laboratory will be equipped with toilets.

“The new functions should not only serve to the body but also the mind and spirit The second building will be organized on a double height space and host entertaining features for children, recreational functions, places to study and work. The groundfloor will be organized as a baby parking made by wood and straw. the upper floor will have a library and many work station for adult and children.

A NEW TOWER FOR CAMPINAS Campinas is a city and county in Sao Paulo state, Brazil. As the core of a metropolis of 2.8 million people, it’s the third biggest city in the state, just after Sao Paulo itself and Guarulhos. Campinas is a major center of industry, services and research, holding the 11th highest GDP of Brazil and being responsible for 15% of all scientific research of the country.

“Campinas nasceu para se tornar a capital de um estado” Like many others large Brazilian cities, Campinas’ Downtown suffers from urban degradation. However, it contains several buildings of historical and architectural value, many associated with Sao Paulo state’s glorious coffee farming era between the XIX and XX centuries.

DIFFERENTS SHAPES FOR DIFFERENTS FRONTS

The area of the transformation is situated not far from Cambui district of Campinas. Cambui is the name of a noble district of the Central Region in the city of Campinas. Has a very complete infrastructure with markets, shops, restaurants, bars, hotels, clubs, theaters etc. The Cambui also has one of the highest per capi-

“possibilidade de confronto e pesquisa arquitetônica” ta incomes in the city. In it, it is situated some of the most expensive real estate in Campinas. The intervention then has to be a link between very different realities (Cambui and the nearest areas)

A CHANCE OF COMPARISON The realization of this project allowed me to confront a reality until now never known. This building has become for me the encounter between the Brazilian building tradition, the cult of form Italian, foreign technology and the nature of this country.

“A chance of growth for both parties, this must be the architecture Techniques, forms and functions have been designed to allow this building to blend elegantly into the city skyline.

NEW TECHNIQUES FOR A YOUNG CULTURE Although Brazil is a country that has grown enormously in recent decades, still has much to learn in the techniques of building construction. This country may be an excellent test and a laboratory for new architectural and technological research, to try to blend tradition with innovation.

The bridge and the park

the symbol of Millesimo

CONNECTING 2 BANKS OF THE RIVER The concept of the ribbon is not new in contemporary architecture; its sinuous shape and the great malleability make “the tape” a very interesting concept to use.

“it is a volumetric ribbon, it’s not just plane” In the design of the bridge and the park to the city of Millesimo the concept of “ribbon” is used to join two realities and two bends of the river divided and different. In this way, the footbridges and park become one between them and the city. In this manner they reconnect two pieces of city long remained divided.

DIAGRAM OF GREEN RIVER

REUNION OF THE TWO SIDES The realization of a project can not be based exclusively on the search for a form that best fits the space. The project must also be born by the needs, constraints and needs of the area that will welcome him.

DIAGRAM OF PATHS

COMPOSITIONAL SCHEME

“A ribbon in response to the needs” For this reason, before starting any project is a very important a study of the fundamental characteristics of the construction site, as the road network and the study of green. The ribbon then becomes an excuse to unite the two sides and try to meet the needs of this project.

THE PROJECT OF THE PARK AND FOOTBRIDGE The design of the park and walking runways for the city of Millesimo is built around a very simple concept design: the ribbon. This element of the project divided into two subgroups: the “structural ribbon”, which comprises the seats of the park and the structure of the pedestrian bridges, and the “ribbon path” that suggests the paths in the park and on the bridges.

DIFFERENT MATERIALS FOR DIFFERENT ROUTES The different paths are characterized by different materials: - ASPHALT, vehicular traffic; - CONCRETE, cyclist traffic; - WOOD, pedestrian traffic.

THE GATE OF THE CITY The project involves the construction of two footbridges grafted on the existing bridge. The bridge is physically the port city of Millesimo. The two runways are used to emphasize this symbol of “ACCESS”.

Though the two runways are similar but not mirrored. In this way, the project acquires sinuosity, and does not become a simple repetition of concepts.

TECHNOLOGY PROJECT The structure is a system designed arched, more precisely a “bowstring with deck eccentric and inclined hangers. The existing bridge is in brick arch of five spans and presents an overlay of massive reinforced concrete elements dated approximately half of the last century. Considering these characteristics and the inability to be based in the river bed, we opted to certify the arches in correspondence of the foregoing, after a double strengthening of existing beam, unable to sustain efforts torsional. The arches, as well as the hangers, the rods that make up the deck and the tubular element are made of steel; the walking surface of the deck is made of wood as well as secondary elements that support the latter.

IL PALAZZO DALLE 2 ANIME The realization of the project of the residential complex located in the area of Aurora in Turin and it was extremely significant and educational.

“Turin has a complex soul. Turin city workers. For the first time in my career I had to confront with the totality of the whole project, from the study of the context, design, with implementation of technical drawings, writings and graphs that analyze the total realization of our project. The design surface is inserted in the extraordinary city of Turin, bent, proud and never won.

THE PROJECT Once the group has taken full awareness of the physical and social dimensions of the area design it has been made a plan, a project, an idea not only characterized by artistic value, but he was trying to respond to the real needs of the locals.

“Give back the city to its citizens is a social responsibility of the architects For this reason the transformation of the area is not only characterized by interventions to create complex private, but these are included in an operation to return this area to the inhabitants of this district.

THE PRIVATE BUILDINGS The project involves the construction of private buildings (characterized by features residential, tertiary and social) and a public area.

“The differentiation as an answer The three blocks have been redesigned following 2 types: - The STICK - The TOWER . The diversification of the types allowed to offer apartments and public exercises differentiated between themselves.

The knot number 1 shows the roof technology, the study of the beams and the type 1 of the wall: WOOD PVC + INSULATION + MASONRY.

the node number 2 shows the technology of the junction balcony - masonry (BRICKS + TERMO PLASTER) and as has been observed with the insulating coat system use schochen thermal break.

The knot number 3 shows the attachment of the wall with the ground, the technology of the floor and the construction of garages and basements for blocks.

THE ENERGY The sustainability of a project can not be only economic or social but also environmental. that’s why the project includes buildings with high performance technologies to capture energy adapted to decrease the cost of maintenance.

THE PUBLIC PARK The project not only involves the construction of private buildings, but also the construction and maintenance of a large urban area dedicated to green, to relax and play.

“Urban green areas should be seen as an obligation So that the project reflects his public spirit the area is fully equipped not only with play areas, benches, bike paths but the same flower beds are home to medicinal plants, beautiful to look at and useful to use.

THE WOODEN GAZEBO Every public space has to have buildings that allow people to shelter and relax. In line with the project these tents are composed mainly of wood pvc.

“Think not only build, but also how to recover To enable easy construction of the building, they were made of the mounting boards that are identified on time each element and how it fits in with the next.

The geometric solid that mostly we conveyed the idea of harmony and unity at the same time was the cube, and therefore taken as a starting point for the project.

THE CUBE

To handle the composition was decided to divide the cube into two, alternating so also different functions.

THE SPLITTED

After defining the form and composition has been called the ultimate function of the cube. The client had requested a kitchen available to anyone and can be placed anywhere.

The final step was to combine the functions (REFRIGERATOR, TABLE, DRAWERS, DISHWASHER, FLOOR GAS) with the design concept.

THE COMPACTNESS

THE FUNCTIONS

FUNCTION & HARMONY The compact design, the multi-function, the recycled materials, made the CUBE a piece of furniture targeted for a range of medium-poor population.

“The democracy of the possibilities In this way also the less well-off or that do not have large living areas, can enjoy the pleasure of cooking and a good meal in the company.

THE HOUSE OF CARDS The project involves the reorganization of the functions and furnishing an apartment located in the city of Turin. The commission has requested, from the start, a project that would revo-

“Cardboard is a natural and ecological material lutionize the way we live, had to be economically and environmentally sustainable, without forgetting the convenience of the common life. The old apartment had to undergo a radical transformation, without being distorted or exaggerated changed.

What the customers were looking for, finally, was a “light transformation”, low cost, but with clear connotations revolutionaries, And therefore they decided to decorate the house with furniture made of a material that, in my opinion, better suited to the ideas of the client: CARDBOARD. The apartment has also been designed according to the functions of each area. This allowed us to take advantage of not only furniture revolutionaries, but also forms suitable for specific areas. The result is’ a place that the client can easily call “home”.

ARRANGEMENT OF LIGHTS

THE PRE-EXISTENCE The renovation of this property was not to be, according to the commission, particularly massive and radical. Two elements had to be adhered to the ancient project: - The division between the living and sleeping areas; - The existing structure.

THE PROJECT The final project seeks to fully respect the directives of the client, presenting a large living area and only partially limited by movable walls.

“Solidity, exceptional estate, with a few simple joints” The sleeping area is instead more massive, more defined and less subject to large spatial changes. Everything is furnished with furniture mainly cardboard stuck or glued.

“100% recyclable and biodegradable, they are the pressboard furniture”

THE KITCHEN It is a modular kitchen made entirely of recycled cardboard. It has a simple design and original complete with stove and oven, sink, faucet and drawers.

THE CHAIR Finely molded chair made of pasted cardboard.

THE EYE LAMP Lamp made with a base of pressed cardboard and paper flowers backlit by a light.

THE BED Basis for read completely recyclable, removable and lighter to transport, with the capacity to hold up to a ton of weight

THE NIGHT TABLE Bedside made by cardboard shelves, shaped and fitted together.

THE COUCH Basis to the living room sofa realized through an “extrusion plans cardboard glued together.

THE P-COUCH The project, which this time, includes the design and construction of three elements that have furnished the house of a young couple: a sofa, a table and a nightstand. The first of these elements should not have been just a couch, but to the occurrence a comfortable guest bed. To achieve this modular structure have been used pallets, finely cleaned, smoothed, repaired and mounted. Finally it was placed a single modular pillow to recreate the space of comfort useful to a sofa bed.

THE REEL TABLE Finally the last element required by the client was a special table for the living room that would fit as well as possible to the new sofa - pallet.

“Simple doesn’t mean simplistic” To overcome this lack it was decided to recover an old reel abandoned. This element has been cleaned, roughed, smoothed and partially repaired. Finally, to protect it from dirt and various substances has been painted with a special paint.
