What’s Next?
Must Do’s After Portfolio Week
Breathe deep and stay calm!
It’s normal to feel sensitive about reviewer comments on your portfolio. While it’s always hard for artists to hear feedback, remember the portfolio review meeting you just had is not a forever judgment of you as an artist, nor is it a final determi nation of your fit for that college. Use any feedback, good or bad, to grow yourself as an artist and your portfolio.
Review the notes they gave you and make a plan for your next steps.
Did a rep. say your portfolio doesn’t have enough original work? Make a plan to create more! Did they tell you your portfolio has too much observation-based art, but they’d like to see some conceptual pieces too? Consider creating more imagi native pieces. Did they identify areas where your technique could use refinement? Identify areas you could use more practice.
Put that plan into action.
The Art Effect offers a multitude of classes to help you address any gaps in your portfolio identified during your review, including Multimedia Portraiture, Founda tions in Figure Drawing, and Intermediate Portfolio in Drawing and Painting. Sign up for a new class and together we can strengthen your portfolio in time to apply!
Stay in touch.
To really stand out from other applicants, send a follow up email thanking the rep for thier feedback and your intentions of making improvements. Check in with the admissions rep with any questions or updates about your portfolio. Reps love hearing that prospective students have taken their feedback seriously, and work ing to bring your portfolio up to par helps them get to know you as a hard-work ing and dedicated artist.
