Libertango is a composition by tango composer Ástor Piazzolla, recorded and published in 1974. The title is a portmanteau merging “Libertad” (Spanish for liberty) and “Tango”, symbolizing Piazzolla’s break from Classical Tango to the infamous Tango Nuevo.

William Byrd (1540 or late 1539 – 4 July 1623) was an English composer of the Renaissance. He wrote in many of the forms current in England at the time, including various types of sacred and secular polyphony, keyboard (the so-called Virginalist school) and consort music.

One of the goals of Gyorgy Ligeti’s ongoing series of piano etudes (fifteen at last count) is to produce exceedingly complex polyrhythms--or, as he says, “illusory rhythms”--with a single, human interpreter. Among the most striking is number six, “Automne a Varsovie”.

Somei Satoh is a Japanese composer. In the post-Takemitsu era, Somei Satoh is a Japanese composer of contemporary traditional music (gendai hogaku). He studied at Nihon University of Art in the early 1970s and is essentially an autodidact in composition.

Talvin Singh Matharoo is a producer and composer and tabla player, known for creating an innovative fusion of Indian classical music and drum and bass. Singh is generally considered involved with an electronica sub genre called Asian Underground, and more recently as Indian and/or Asian electronica.

Moses Taiwa Molelekwa (born April 17, 1973 in Tembisa; died February 13, 2001) was a South African jazz pianist from a family of jazz musicians. His father was nicknamed “Monk�, by the jazz society he belonged to, for his understanding of Thelonious Monk.

Conlon Nancarrow was a United States-born composer who lived and worked in Mexico for most of his life. Nancarrow is best remembered for the pieces he wrote for the player piano. He was one of the first composers to use musical instruments as mechanical machines, making them play far beyond human performance ability. He lived most of his life in relative isolation, not becoming widely known until the 1980s.

Howard Skempton is a British composer and accordionist. Since the late 1960s he has been associated with the English school of experimental music. Skempton’s work is characterized by stripped down, essentials-only choice of materials, absence of formal development and a strong emphasis on melod.

John Dowland was an English Renaissance composer, singer, and lutenist. He is best known today for his melancholy songs such as “Come, heavy sleep”, “Come again”, “Flow my tears” and “In darkness let me dwell”, but his instrumental music has undergone a major revival, and has been a source of repertoire for lutenists and classical guitarists during the twentieth century.

John Milton Cage Jr. was an American composer, music theorist, writer, philosopher and artist. A pioneer of indeterminacy in music and nonstandard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde.

Charles Edward Ives was an American modernist composer. He is one of the first American composers of international renown, though Ives’ music was largely ignored during his life, and many of his works went unperformed for many years. Over time, Ives came to be regarded as an American Original.
