Picture taken from the spot 4 According to North & West Melbourne News, “Across from the manicured pavements and waterfront restaurants on Southbank Boulevard is Batman park – a concrete strip under the city train-lines which is a renowned haunt for those sleeping rough. Out of sight from the bustling city centre, a collection of belongings are huddled together. Multiple blankets, clothing, a bicycle and other possessions are being watched over by a young man reading a book, an older woman writing in a journal and David – who introduces himself whilst mixing tracks on a laptop with a makeshift sound system.”

Precendent 01 : Aarhus Harbor Bath Site Location: Denmark The strategy of Aarhus Harbor Bath was to provide new ways for the public to enjoy the water in all seasons. In front of the bath, a series of freestanding restaurants, a children’s theater, beach huts for various activities and other lifecreating public oriented programs were designed before the private buildings blocks which will rise in the coming years.

Our site is by the yarra river, so we can also extend the site along the North Bank of Yarra to create a pubilc bath for homeless children. the bath work as framework , which provide a safe area for children to play.
Area for inspriation
the bath can also be regarded as building whithout roof. but it bring more life exprience without architectural space.

Precendent 02 : Aarhus Harbor Bath Site Location: China The project is located in Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is an abandoned space by the countryside, lying in a small town. The starting point of design is how to let more possibilities of events happen in this place. The site is located on the main road from school to village, and this main road is the only way for students to go to school. This project consider these children as the main users of the site.

Week 02 Studio 01 WHAT HOME
There is a semi-open space beneath the railway in batman park. It is a prefect area to create more spatial exprience for children.
Area for inspriation
we can design several types of space such as open space, semi open space and private space. But children will define the function of space.

As an open park, it provides a place for people to exercise, but there are some places where the function is relatively simple. Adding a bicycle playground can add interest to this place.

Amalysis of House N I select three aspects to analyse. the most apparent feature of houseN is that it has many openings. 1 safety. when I think about our site. it was public park. in the future. it will becomes children's home. How to let people know this? should we fence the site and create a safe place? maybe we can have many openings like house N. in this situation. children can interact whith pedestrian. and communicate with surrounding things. 2 I think about boundary of space. for our site. it is really simple made by three different size boxes. the big box without roof and work as open space. the middle box is a in_between space. which connect indoor space and out space. the small box is private space. for small box, the middle box is outside. but for big box. the middle box is insde. So you can find the the boundary of inside and outside is blurred. chuildren can also see any other space through openings. so they can feel that paly in a free sapce. 3scence. I think about openings on the roof. when children look up to the sky. the sky becomes many different scenes in the openings. So they see the same things but will have different feeling. which inspirate children to think and discuss. I think it is another way of play. the last picture is a painting from Mondrian. it is similar with our openings of wall. apply it in our design. either sky or painting use pattern to bring more elements in children ’s life.

Amalysis of Secret Base I summarize 4 design techniques of project. all of them are relevent to play space. 1 it is 800 mm when stair up. it becomes rail. but for other children going by. it becomes wall. 2 1500mm hollow brick wall which combines window and wall. For children they can see other side though hollows. For adults. it become the wall. So this design techinque creates a children's space without adults inspection。 3 both side are stage and provide a private space for chuildren to paly with their friends. and middle space is public spcae for people walking around. from the upper picture you can see all of them are semi open sapce or open space. it is really easy and convenient for children to play and interact together. 4 in common sense. people will make a turn when they meet corner. but in this project. the stage is only 500mm height. So cuildren can just jump up and play in the stage. the aim of these four techinques is hoping create flexible and interesting space for children and helpe them to have rich spatial experience without any rule. in normal designďźŒ we define the function which define thespace. in this design, we blur space and combine function. in this project. we don't want to influence children behavior. I believe children will explore and redefine space by their creativity.

Inspiration from precedents there are previous precedents. the first is House N. for this precedent, i analyse the relationship between indoor and outdoor space. and how to blur boundary of space. the second precedent is secret base. In this precedents, I try to study play space for children. program Firstly. I use design techniques from House N. this is the roof with many openings. my original idea is to creat different views for children. But when I put my idea in the site. I find it is a good way to reserve existing trees. I have said that I hope to creat a free space without any rules or limitations. When I think about homeless children home. maybe curve is better form of this project. three reasons 1.there are more choices and changes for users. 2. in addition, when I analyse urban fabric. the street of city is very tidy, like a lot of rectangles. but for the area around site, you can find the yellow streets are curving. 3.finally, when I draw the form of building. I find it looks like flowing water on the site. the site is by yarra river. build a relationship between building and environment. From precedents of sercet base. I get inspiration that maybe height is an important factor when children is palying. the height is reason why space can provide many potential functions of play. so I try to use element of curve in section of buildings. it looks like wave. I also connect soem openings, and they become irregular circle like these. Children can enjoy day light and get different views from patios. sometimes they can see outside and sometimes they can see the river or sky. that because of different level of buildings.

To summary: For us, we propose that a site can be defined as indoor space and outdoor space, and they play their respective roles in the site. For the indoor space, they provide street children with living space and meet their private needs, so that they can find a sense of belonging in the limited space. For outdoor space, they have the opportunity to get close to the open space and have enough freedom to play outside the field. At the same time, they also give them the chance to create the different possibilities that the space presents through the porcess of play.

Needs and Functions We summarize some functions depends on children's needs. almost all homeless children lack chance to have educational resource. so study room or art room will be important part in home. they can develop their interest and learn some skillsďźŒit will help they to find job in the future. From interview, I know that some homeless children leave from child protection organizations. they said everything is locked, they can't find food when they are starving. so I think we need provide a kitchen which is accessible for all children. When we think about bedroom for children. We find maybe private room is not the best way for everyone. children can't get public refuge in most of the time. so there would have six or seven of them that always sleeping together. it let them feel safer. so I think they perfer to sleep in dormitory with their friends. statistics shows that there 70% childrrn have mental issues. so they also need children care and psychologist go there every weekend. natural environment also is important for children. so we should have playground in outside Batman is a open space and we want to expend site to space under the bridge. it would have more different experience in the site. In fact, homeless children always stay in outsode. and they adapt to this lifestyle although sometimes they need privacy. So maybe we can create a environment which blur indoor and outdoor.
Studio 01 What home I 041
Studio 01 What home I 042
Introduce of scheme 1 I also think about what is difference of children's behaviors when they stay in indoor space and outdoor space. children prefer to play in outside because there no rule and limitations. children can always redefine the usage of facilities. unlike toys and other recreation facilities. natural element s would change constantly. children will never be fed up with them. first scheme we summarize some functions depends on children's needs the shap of building is a circle. because I hope the building can open for homeless children from any directions. the roof of building looks like mountain, there are two reasons for this. firstly. I want reserve views from North bank. so pedistrains can see the yarra river. secondlyďźŒ the roof form ramp and have different levelďźŒso it can work as playground for children. there are many bubbles in the buildings. these are courtyard. because of them. people can enjoy more sunlight in the building. courtyard is connection between indoor and outdoor. people can see outside from anywhere of buildings.at same time. they also seperate inside space. homeless children usually choose corner of city because of no surveillance or they need some privacy. they find private space in public space. just think about people go from one space to another space through outside. it is similar process. I hope children can live in a familiar environment but is more safe than before. children prefer to play in outside because there no rule and limitations. outside space becomes part of building. The indoor and outdoor are blend. it means that the space will always change when the natural environment changes. children can explore space and have different feeling everytime.

Introduce of scheme 2 the second scheme is previous one. I still utilize the design techniques of house N. I use curve as main element of buildings. because natutal environment is uncertain. maybe we can bring this character into our inside space. like the bottom diagram. I try to analyse the precedent sercet base. i find we can't define usage and imagine how children will play. so I like we can also design a uncertain space like natural environment. we reserve space under the building. in this situation. the people in the building can see outside through lightwell. it is another way to connect inside and outside.

GROUND PLAN
Studio 01 What home I 061
Developement of scheme 1 For my original idea. I hope to create a big natural environment for children to play, but public can also enjoy Batman park like befote. and this week I consider about children's privacy. So I think the roof can work as playground for children. But it also is a boundary between children and public. children can go to the roof from inside of building. it seem like we just pull up the playground. So we reserve a ground space for public. In the past, homeless children always stay at a public environment. so they can only find privacy in pbulic space. in this project. the roof playgorund is totally a open space and access to natural environment. but this space is only for children. As you can see, the picture shows that the patio bring natural environment into building and corridor provides semi open space for public. the corridor form a pool for children. The cchildren's home is made up of five piece with bubbles shape. the irregular form create a free space for people. people can arrive at Batman park from any direction. it is same for children. Because building are divided to five parts. so I try to put relevant functions together. like the dining room connects to kitchen and storage. the staff room is located in center, so children can easily ask for help. the cafe is for public, so I put it on the other side. In plan. you can find there are many patios and courtyard. when children walk from one room to another room. they can see natural environmentďźŒ or they just go through the courtyard. I hope the inside space can follow the form of building. it can create more interesting space.

Introduce of scheme 3 In previous research, I hope to bring natural environment into inside space. which will create a changing environment for children. however, it also reduce privacy. so I rethink about my strategy. I read van eyck ' s articles and get some inspiration. The left picture is layout of a village. it is built in natural environment. it doesn't have road. people will walk according to natural situation everytime. it is similar with play. children always establish rule of play by themselves. so the best way is that we provide space without definite function. and children can define space. it would be void space. In addition. circle show the flexibility and mobility. it is a suitble element for a play space. So I research a lot of possibility of this kind of space and how to layout individual space. The village is a good concept to layout sleeping area. these bedroom are independent for each other. it look like a mini city. children can feel like they walk around street. but it is private space. I also think how to combine or connect multiple bubbles. which will create a bigger space and more spatial experience. the shape of building is a irregular shape. I hope it look like a natural element. In general. void space is transition space. but for children it means more possibilities. they have flexible routine and many coroner s to play. it also is similar with in between space. because every bedroom is independent. when children go into room. the void space is There are some reference of facilities for children’s play. the inside space have different level and corners, so the children find many private space for them to play with friends. children can also climb to the roof , the whole roof is a paly ground. it is very convinent for children to decide to paly in inside or outside. In plan. the entrance is a half bubbles. I hope children feel that they are stay around building before they go into building. for inside space. the minimum width between each bubbles is 1metre. so children can go to anywhere of building. it is a free space.

Developement of scheme 3 After TuesdayďźŒ I try to make the shape of building straight. in the way we can have more regular inside space. which also is easier for me to layout functions and furnitures. as you can see, it can be regard as several regular shapes are connected together. I still reserve patios in the shceme. becuase I hope natural environment can go into the inside space. On the other hand, I hope to create a free insde space. and patios can work as wall and divide different areas.it is a beautiful thing. the facade of building is glass. but in this building . every room is independent. so don't worry about privacy. in the scheme. children can still go up to roof. but I forgot to build ramp in the cnetral courtyard. I design three types of bedroom. which are shared bedroom triple bedroom and twin bedroom. and each bedroom have bathroom it looks like different size of bubbles are put together. and every two bubbles will create a corner in between. it is hard to put function or something. I think it can be play space for children. I put activities space and dining room on two side of sleeping area. it is convenient for children when they feel hungry or want to play.

Developement of scheme 3 Firstly, I think about the relationship between building and surrounding environment. in my scheme, every room is independent. so the whole exterior wall can be glass. there is the precedent from Sanaa. the glass reflect image of trees. and the building is disappeared in the site. I think this is one way to connect to surrounding environment. in addition. the roof of building can design as playground with landscape. which can be regarded as extension of Batman park For inside space. I give practical purpose to these patios. we can retain some existing trees and let these become part of building. which create play space for children. due to I use circle and curve as element in this scheme. so there are some narrow space. however. if these walls have openings. children can still have good spatial feeling. I'm really thank for your suggestion in last session. As you can see, the configuration is more reasonable. these rooms are 1metre from exterior wall. which form corridors. there is a courtyard between sleeping area and kitchen. so it work as wall. but also can provide dayglight with two space. For study area, I think it would a social space for children. So I create semi open space for them. it is very convient for them to communicate with others. there still has two semi open room for group chat. In silde. you can see insde space. it also shows how children go up to the roof.

Mid presentation and ref lection My initial idea is to bring natural environment to inside space and provide changing environment for childten. it will motivate children’s curiosity and creativity. children can explore building and redefine space by themselves. this process is similar with children to play in outside. on the other hand ,they play in inside space. the building provide protection and privacy for them. In iteration step. I rsearch a lot of design techniques and concepts. I hope to find better way to approach my idea. in addition. I find circle show the flexibility and mobility. it is a suitble element to my idea. Children like to play in outside becaus of changing environment. i try to catch this uncertainty and apply it into my shceme. I design some schemes from inspiration of natural shape. For study space, I think it would a social space for children. So I create semi open space for them. it is very convient for them to communicate with others. there still has two semi open room for group chat. I also open openings on the curve wall. so children can have good view. they can feel free even if they stay in a narrow space Patois also is a good techniques to bring outside to inside. like this. children are playing in the building but they are very easy to touch nature. While bringing nature to inside space. how to keep this changing in private space. my answer is void space. I get inspiration from primitive village, there are no definite corridor. children can choice their routine without limitations. although every bedroom is independent. but they are connect to each other. In play process, the best way is that we provide space without definite function. And it is achieved in this area. In the ground plan, you can find there are no regular space. so children can enjoy space. like they play in natural environment. for keep flexibility of space. I avoid to use wall to block space. in fact. patios can work as wall and divide different areas. but it also keep daylighting.

Mid presentation and ref lection In the roof of building. children can go up from stair in courtyard. it work as a play ground. I also design landsapce in this space. From section. you can find there is no boundary between inside and outside. they are blurred together. The facade of building is glass. becaue I hope children can feel they stay at a open space.in this building . every room is independent. so don't worry about privacy. Because the site is in a public space, so we should think about relationship between building and public. as you can see. the facade of buildings reflect image of surrounding environment. and the building looks like disappeared in the site. I hope public can feel like before when they come to Batman park.

Developement of Landscape I think about boundary between building and public space. the difference between two things is that building provide a private space for people to do what they want. but in public space, people need interact with others. So I hope this boundary can build a relationship between building and site. As you can see. I design curve walls around the building. but they are divided, which create a lot of semi open space. these wall improve privacy of building. on the other hand. they also provide a more rich spatial experience for public. some wall have openings. So you can find homeless children can arrive at buildings from any direction. in this process. curve wall also works as visual guide I try to avoid closed space. so there only two outside courtyards enclose the area which really need to be protected. they are play space and sleeping area. children usually stay in these two place This is one routine I designed. the right hand is glass corridor of homeless children home. when people go to Batman park. they should go through space firmed by curve walls. and then they will see the yarra river and south bank. the Batman park is a flat place. so I hope create a changing environment and public can also get more feeling when they come in. when I design these curve walls. I hope they can looks like grow from the building. so you can say the building influence the site. or the site bring more elements into the building. This is entrance ďźŒ I retain a big open space in front of entrance. so children are very easy to find then entrance from direction of bridge. from Spencer St. there are a pavilion and public garden. andpeople can also directly go to the building They are boundary of outside courtyard. the first one . I use corridor to close the courtyard. the wall is glass. so it doesn't influence view and daylight. the second one. children can also have good view to yarra river. but people in outside can not see inside. in fact. it doesn't finish. I still want to find a better design techniques to replace this wall.

Developement of Boundary of building There are some design techniques I probably will apply. I hope boundary of building is not just the wall.it is very depressive for children. 1.2meters heigh. so children can have view to see outside. but predestrain can't see inside. There is another way to blur boundary. it is aluminum plate ďźŒ you can find both insde and outside have plate. this is details last one is about my glass wall. it would show like this.

Developement of Play space In holiday, I think about garden and facade of building. For the boundary of garden. I accept Isabel's suggestion and use timber batten. it can protect children from outside but also provide good views. I hope building and surrounding environment can have more direct relationship. so I design the small roof. in outside , it is a pavilion for public to talk or rest. in the garden, i use design techniques from my precedent sercet base. children and public are under same roof, but they have different activities. I don't want the building occupany this area and block it. so i try to find some way to create communication between building and batman park. I get inspiration from Shadow game. children always keep curious with changing things. Sun always change its position in one day, which will create different shadow. it would be a attractive design for children. In the plan. I modify bedrooms and staff office and now these rooms can have a good ventilation. For reading room, I use one single wall to separate them. which avoid to create remanent space.

Developement of Play space Depending on Isabel's comments, I have modified my scheme this week. For study area. this is glass wall in inside, so sunlight can come in. but there also have a exterior facade, so it provide privacy from children. this is artroom. you can find it is closed with solid wall. so I design a openings on the roof. I continue to develop the pavilion and find different connection. There is a platform cross the timber batten. In outside , it can be chair for public like public facility. but in the garden. it work as platform for children to paly like this picture. In section. the thin line is glass. this is nostructure. I will think about structure after determine my configuration. For sleeping areaďźŒ I redesign it. there are two public bathroom and service for three bedroom. you can find the bedroom is bigger and become more comfortable for children.

Developement of Inside space and Facade This week I think about landsacpe in surrounding environment. I pull up the ground and isolate the building from spencer street. which provide better privacy for building. this loop connects two elevation and it become a bridge. people can go arcoss blow it or go from one elevation to another one This is another landscape. this loop extend from ground to top. people can site here read book or talk with other people. they can also go to the building directly. In plan. I add some furnitures. and connect courtyard and garden. as you can see, there are two corrdiors, which generate two circles. in this way, I think it create a more open and flexible space for children. but it doesn't influence function and convenience of building. in face. this two corrdiors work as buffer zone between inside and outside. there are main inside space I designed. For facade. I hide timber batten behind glass. one reason is that timber batten is easy to be corroded in outside. in addition. glass reflect image of surrounding environment. it also can be regarded as surface to protect children's privacy. For glass wall, i refer to Toyota Aizuma hall. the glass hide the height of roof. so when people look at building. the roof looks really thin.

Developement of play space and Landscape This week I think about landsacpe and children's play The First one is previous landsacpe, but I move it in the garden. As you can see. it expend to outside, So children can climb up and see yarra river or Batman park. and this piece of landscape belong to public. people can go to the top of elevation. children and public can see each other . but there is no connection . they even are in different level. so children are really safe. they are protected from outside I replace staircase to silde. so children on the roof can go into slide and arrive at ground floor directly. Because you said my scheme don't look like children's building. so I try to create some interesting space on facade. There is another play facility. children can sit here or go up to the corridor and work around. it is really low. it is 500mm from ground.

Rendering of inside space According to Isabel's comments, I have developed two place of my scheme The First one is facade. I try to use same language from my scheme and it shows like that. Some place such as here and here are windows of bedroom. So I just keep it . For slide. I add a landing in middle, so children slide down and they maybe rest here or play. and slide to ground floor. I think different level can bring different spatial feeling. There are some interior prespectives. because they are draft. so I just use rendering. but for final work. I will use collage style In sleeping area. there is a cpurtyard in center. which provide daylight. and I build mesh on the roof. children can climb up and play In kitchen and dining room, it is a open kitchen. there is a table to put buffet and tableware. and in dining room. children can have good view to yarra river. I design two type of table. it is higher one for adult. the lower but bigger one is for children For garden. as you can see, the facade creates a interaction with users. people can lie back there. it can also work as sercet space for children For play sapce. like I showed before. the patio and courtyard bring otuside to inside. children are very easy to access natural environment. In library and reading room. there are some openings on curve wall. so children can have good views. it make they feel free. there are many small space but all of they are connected to each other. which provide many potential possibilities
