Rainier Beach Urban Farm Jan 2017 | Pair Work Rainier beach urban farm is an urban agriculture program that design and manege by Seattle Tilth and Department of Seattle Park. It is an educational purpose program which is willing to educate not only Rainier Beach Community but also other areas within the city. Our goal is to provide a site design as a framework for Seattle Tilth. The other goal is to design a product that can be easily assembled in the site and meet diverse needs. This is a comprehensive program with community engagements. During the design process, we’ve participated in three meeting to meet different groups of users of the site. These meetings are the oppotunities to engage with community, but they are also the challenges of the design since we need to learn to negociate with different groups and to identify the priority of our design elements.

“ARE YOU THERE? ” Oct 2016 | Individual Work This is a project that respond to the “Call For Artists” competition of Tacoma, which requires artist to create an art installation along the new trail near UW Tacoma. The design need to respond to the history of the site and serves as the new icon to attract the public’s attention. In the progress of history, something is remained; something is missing; something is hidden and something new will happen. Tacoma has a unique slogan to reflect its identity in each period of time. In order to continuing this, my basic concept is choosing a short sentence which can be read from two sides to interpret the current situation of Tacoma. “Are you there?” – This is a question to Tacoma where used to be “City of destiny” but now is facing challenges. Is the hidden history still there? Are the achievements there? Is the future of Tacoma there? “ There you are.” – This is the answer of the question. As we know, New development is in p progress. And the trail will be the indicator of this process. All the hidden history, the remained structures, the missing moments and conversations, the new things, they are all there. The structures make the words can be read differently in terms of different distances. Meanwhile the large scale makes it possible to create diverse space and sensory experience for people.

“ARE” is likes a signal that offers people a sense- something new is happening in this area.
There are some microphones to collect and transit sounds. These microphones locate at different height in terms of meeting diverse users’ needs.
The structure of “YOU” creates a space that encourage people to stay and listen to the sounds here.
“THERE” is focus on encouraging people to touch and cooperate. It also create an unique experience of distance- people who is touching the structure may not know which alphabet is glowing.
Upload or edit sounds “Communicate with people who is not in Tacoma. Control the light and make specific alphabet glowing.

Create an unique experience for online users. Take pictures, add tags, edit stories... While you were in the simulative tour, you could click the tag and watch pictures and stories from other people.
Similar to the concept of Pokemon Go By using the app and camera on your phone, you can watch different videos that relate to the history of the site.

P-patch Pro March 2016 | Pair Work Cascade P-patch has been served the surrounding community well for almost 20 years. Since the South Lake Union area is facing rapid development which brings them both oppotunities and challenges, the P-patch maneger and gardeners are seeking a potential proposal to redesign the site. Our goal is to meet the basic requirements that they listed and create a new community center for not only the P-patch users but also other community members. The most innovative part of our design is redesigning the existing buiilding and adding a green roof to expand the amount of plots as well as create an fluent circulation of the whole P-patch. Besides, we focus on balancing the privacy of gardens and the participation of the public. To deal with this problem, we design an orange path with seats and gaps. These seats serve as both sitting area and fence. The gaps are the limited amount of point that allow the visitors to get into the plots.

This is the entrance of the P-patch, I can see the view of the gardens as well as hear the sound of vehicles.
Wow, we can sit here and have a rest. Do you hear that? I can hear the sounds of kids playing and working nearby.
You want to go up to the roof? I want to follow the orange path though, let’s try different routes!
This is an open plaza, some gardeners are working on the given gardens and some are sharing their products. There is an agriculture knowledge class in the building!
This is a great place to stay, I can sit on the concrete seat and observe the whole site. Wow, I see my friend downstairs!
Oh, there are lots of plots on the roof as well. I can touch the plants in this area and talk to the gardeners. We have lots of fun!
I can hear the gardeners and visitors but I can not see them. It feels good that I can sit in front of a green wall.
This is the open plaza, so many people are gathering here! I can choose to join them or go to the Cascade playground through the entrance.
Hi! You looked so great on the green roof! Having fun? I’m thinking of getting closer to the plots.
Experience
Pollinator corridor can also be used as the transition between playground and P-patch. Each garden has individual compost bins.
Central gathering space for the public and for P-patch users to sale or share their products.
The zig-zag path is designed to meet ADA standard.
Lobby and classroom.
Green wall provides a place for pedestrians to stay and respond to the green street proposal.
Kids garden locates near the playstructure of Cascade playground. Fruit trees around the kids garden create an enclosure and a relatively safe place for kids.

The edges of the path provide sitting area for visitors and they also serves as the boundry between public and private space which can prevent visitors interupting the productive process.
The space under the green roof offers additional space for long-term storage.
Info center and classroom. The lobby can be used to display products and sharing information of activities.
Movable glass door can convert the plaza into larger space to accommodate more people.

The Frame Oct 2015 | Individual Work This is an island that can reflect the relationship between human and nature; to experience our life cycle and observe the changing environment. Each part of the island encourage people to focus on specific elements- changing light, growing marine life, plants and even darkness. The shape of the island derive from the embryo of human. Since in the first step of the studio, I design a human shape sculpture which locates in waterfront to reflect the changing tides. In this case, the second step I start to think about the origin of life- the closed relationship between human and water. Each part of the embryo has its unique view and meaning. My purpose is to integrate all these elements and create a space for visitors to experience something they’ve never experienced before and provide a place for them to release pressure.

Island The island would share the same concept with the sculpture and create a series of experience on the island. It is a place for people to release from urban life and is a platform for people to view the environment differently.

Iceberg Sofa July 2013 | Pair Work This is an experimental furniture studio. Students work in pair and design an unique and innovative furniture. The material of this sofa is sponge with activated carbon. The main purpose of our design is create an unusual experience for users. Besides, we are intended to design a sofa that has strong contrast between the shape and the material.
Our design concept is “Contrast. The sharp appearence and the soft materials create a different experience for users. Besides, we want to change the traditional cognition of t the shape of sofa. By using 3D modeling tool, we found that different angle can create different sitting experience.
