The Ultimate Guide to Rugs RUGS 101
OUR ARTISANS
While some works of art are purely decorative, some ancient art forms are beautiful and functional, both adorning and serving the spaces in which they lie. This is certainly true of handwoven rugs. Warm, polished and finely crafted, traditional hand-knotted rugs continue to be made today as they have been for thousands of years. It can take a team of artisans up to a year to complete one rug, using the finest handdyed wools and silks, and tying up to 1,000 knots per square inch.
FIBERS AND MATERIALS
WOOL
Delightfully textured and incredibly durable, wool is a classic choice for any space.
VISCOSE
Expect a lush shine and an oh-so-plush feel. While viscose is a bit more delicate, it’s a great choice for many rooms in the home.
WOOL
AND VISCOSE
Blended fibers in yarn for rugs, such as wool and viscose, combine the benefits of both materials to create a more durable and attractive product. Wool is known for its softness, durability, and insulating properties, making it a popular choice for high-quality rugs. Viscose adds a silky texture and sheen, enhancing the rug’s visual appeal. The blend of these two materials results in a rug that is not only beautiful and soft but also practical and long-lasting, making it a perfect choice for everyday use.
Silk is a luxurious and durable material used in area rugs, known for its elegant appearance and resilience. Its natural sheen and soft texture add sophistication to any room, making silk rugs popular for formal living spaces and upscale interiors. Though delicate, silk is a strong fiber that can last a lifetime with proper care.
ECO-FRIENDLY PET
A UV-resistant option suitable for indoors or out, PET is crafted from recycled plastic and lends a welcoming layer to your sunroom or outdoor oasis.
POLYESTER
Synthetic (man-made) made by extruding polymers or petrochemicals and yarn-dyed. It is highly durable, moisture and stain resistant with minimal-to-no shedding. This material has a slight chemical odor which will fade over time.
POLYPROPYLENE
Synthetic (man-made) made by extruding polymers or petrochemicals and solution-dyed in a liquid state before it is formed into yarn. It is highly durable, moisture, fade and stain resistant, with minimal-to-no shedding or color variation. This material has a slight chemical odor which will fade over time.
Strong and shed-resistant, nylon lays down a durable, lowmaintenance foundation that feels exceptionally soft underfoot.
RUG CONSTRUCTION
Feizy utilizes weavers in India, Turkey, China, Pakistan, Nepal and beyond to create their exclusive designs. For John Feizy, Founder and CEO of the company, it’s been a lifelong mission to expose people to the beauty of a vanished world while enabling them to incorporate these incredible pieces of art into their everyday living spaces. With thousands of museumquality rugs in stock, Feizy protects the tradition of this ancient art, while innovating new constructions and setting new trends with stylish and fashion-forward designs.
HAND-KNOTTED RUGS: THE ART OF TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP
Hand-knotted rugs are true masterpieces of traditional craftsmanship, each meticulously crafted by expert artisans. This process begins with carefully selecting materials — typically highquality wool or silk — intricately hand-woven around cotton warps. Each yarn is wrapped and knotted manually, ensuring every knot is precise and consistent. After the knotting, each strand is individually cut and tightly packed to form a dense, resilient pile that endures through years of use.
• Exceptional Detail and Precision: The manual knotting process allows for unmatched detail and intricate patterns. This precision results in designs that are not only complex but also uniquely beautiful.
• Unparalleled Quality: The quality of hand-knotted rugs is evident in their rich texture and depth. The tightness of the knots ensures durability and a visual appeal that improves with age.
• Exemplary Craftsmanship: The making of a handknotted rug is a labor of love, requiring months of skilled labor by artisans who have often learned this craft passed down through generations.
• Time-Consuming Artistry: Constructing a single 9' x 12' hand-knotted rug can involve up to four artisans and take anywhere from four to six months, reflecting the intensive effort and patience that goes into each piece.
• Aesthetic and Longevity: Each rug is not only a functional item but an everlasting piece of art that adds warmth and character to any space it occupies. Its longevity and ability to withstand the test of time make it a worthwhile investment.
Owning a hand-knotted rug means possessing a piece of cultural heritage that brings timeless elegance and enduring style to your home.
HAND-TUFTED RUGS: MODERN CRAFTSMANSHIP
FOR CONTEMPORARY SPACES
Hand-tufted rugs are crafted using a tufting tool, which mechanically inserts yarn through a pre-stretched fabric backing. This technique allows for creating intricate, textured designs quickly and efficiently. A drawn pattern guides the hand-tufting process, ensuring each design is vivid and consistent. Once hand-tufted, the yarn loops are left intact for a looped pile or sheared to create a plush, cut pile surface. The rug’s backing is then coated with a special glue and reinforced with a canvas fabric to ensure the yarns remain securely in place, providing durability and stability.
KEY FEATURES:
• Speed of Production: Unlike hand-knotted rugs, which require months to produce, hand-tufted pieces can be completed in days or weeks, making them more accessible and cost-effective.
• Versatility in Design: Hand-tufting technology allows for a wide range of intricate and colorful designs that can be adapted quickly to market trends and personal preferences.
• Affordability: Because they are less labor-intensive, hand-tufted rugs are generally more affordable than their hand-knotted counterparts, offering a lower price point for similar aesthetic appeal.
• Durability and Ease of Care: The strong adhesive and fabric backing add to the rug’s durability, making it suitable for high-traffic areas. Maintenance involves regular vacuuming and spot cleaning.
Owning a hand-tufted rug means enjoying the beauty and tactile pleasure of a handcrafted piece with the practicality required for modern living.
HANDLOOMED RUGS:
MERGING TRADITION WITH MODERN TECHNIQUES
Handloomed rugs exemplify the seamless integration of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design needs, woven on traditional looms by skilled artisans. This method creates diverse textures and intricate patterns, supporting various rug types, such as piles, no pile, loop, and flatweaves.
KEY FEATURES AND VARIETIES:
• Handloom with Pile: These rugs are characterized by their plush, raised pile, offering a soft, luxurious feel. The pile is formed by looping yarn over the warp threads and then cutting it to create a dense, soft pile.
• Handloom with No Pile: These rugs feature a smooth, flat surface without a raised pile, crafted by tightly weaving yarn over warp threads without cutting, forming a looped or flat surface. This method produces a dense and durable rug that preserves the intricate patterns and texture of handloom weaving.
• Dhurries and Kilims feature a smooth, flat surface without a raised pile. These tightly woven, durable rugs are known for their sleek appearance. Celebrated for their vibrant patterns and textures, these traditional rugs maintain their quality, making them practical for everyday use and visually appealing for any space.
• Canvas Back Construction: Provides additional support and durability, helping maintain the rug’s shape and structure over time.
• Double Back Construction: Enhances the rug’s durability and stability, suitable for areas with high foot traffic. This construction type mimics the appearance of the back of hand-knotted rugs, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits.
By blending age-old loom techniques with modern design demands, hand-loomed rugs cater to both aesthetic preferences and practical needs, making them a valued addition to any home.
POWER-LOOMED RUGS: MERGING
TRADITION WITH MODERN TECHNIQUES
Power-loomed rugs represent the pinnacle of modern rug manufacturing, combining state-of-the-art technology with practical features. These rugs are machine-woven using automated power looms controlled by computers, which ensure precision in every detail.
KEY FEATURES:
• Durability and Ease of Maintenance: Typically designed with synthetic fibers, power-loomed rugs are particularly suited for hightraffic areas. The materials are durable and easy to clean, ideal for living rooms, hallways, and children’s play areas.
• Consistent Quality and Design: The computer automation of power looms allows for uniformity in color and design, providing high consistency across multiple rugs. This is especially beneficial for coordinated décor in large spaces or various rooms.
• Versatile Styling Options: With the capability to produce unlimited patterns and designs, power-loomed rugs can match any interior design theme, from traditional to contemporary. The technology enables the creation of intricate patterns and vibrant colors that remain consistent throughout the rug’s lifespan.
• Cost-Effectiveness: Machine-made rugs are generally more affordable than hand-woven rugs. This makes them an excellent choice for budget-conscious consumers looking to enhance their home décor without compromising style or quality.
Power-loomed rugs blend modern technology and functional benefits perfectly, making them a smart choice for today’s homes.
RUG MAKING PROCESS
STEP ONE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN
Designs are conceived and developed by our in-house product development team. Consistent communication takes place between our Dallas and overseas teams. Some designs can take up to a year to develop and perfect before they are placed into production.
STEP TWO MATERIALS
The best materials are sourced and processed depending upon the rug’s construction:
Hand-knotted: Wool, Silk, Viscose, Cotton, Jute, or blended fibers
Tufted: Wool, Viscose, Polyester, Acrylic or blended fibers
Machine-made: Polyester, Polypropylene, Viscose
STEP THREE DYES
Natural dyes come from plants, animals, fruits, minerals and other natural resources. Producing them creates minimal environmental impact and they are biodegradable. However, they can be inconsistent, can fade quicker and options for colors are more limited. William Henry Perkin discovered the first synthetic dye in 1856: Mauveine. He changed the textile world forever by introducing a lovely new shade of purple. Synthetic dyes are more concentrated, longer-lasting and offer a huge array of color options. Made with chemical compounds, many manufacturers have started utilizing organic bacteria in the dyeing process to lessen any environmental damage.
STEP FOUR CREATION
Hand-knotted pieces are crafted by skilled artisans most often trained generation after generation, allowing the techniques used today to be much the same as they have been for thousands of years. A skilled weaver individually ties every knot, creating a oneof-a-kind handmade piece. Due to this precise skill required, it can take a single weaver up to a year to create a piece, which is why there are often multiple weavers working simultaneously for a quicker turnaround time. This is what makes each hand-knotted piece so special and unique, and part of the reason why they are more expensive than tufted and machine-made rugs.
The knot count is often used to assess the value of hand-knotted rugs. Most commonly, they are woven with knot counts ranging between 50 and 200 knots per square inch, but an extremely skilled weaver working with the finest fibers can reach a remarkable 400 to 1000 knots per square inch. Because of the preciseness of the knots, hand-knotted pieces can have elaborate designs with limitless options.
Tufted rugs begin with a canvas base fabric. The weaver pushes the wool (or other fiber) through the canvas with a special tool called a tufting gun. Because each tuft is individually hand-punched, there are many design possibilities that can be achieved with this technique. Hand-tufted pieces often have thicker piles than their hand-knotted and machine-made counterparts. Once the design is completed on a tufted rug, a cloth backing is glued to the back to keep the yarns in place.
Tufted pieces are a great option for a client who wants a higher quality piece but wants a more affordable alternative to a handknotted rug. Because they are faster to produce, they can also follow the home fashion trends more quickly and easily.
Machine-made rugs are quick and easy to mass produce using large automatic power looms. These rugs are typically made of synthetic fibers and often translate the latest trends in design and color into floor coverings. They provide exceptional value for the price point. Machine-made rugs give designers flexibility for the client who may not want to invest in a tufted or handknotted piece, or who may want to change their accessories often. This option provides a piece that is meant to be used for a few years and then replaced with a new selection.
STEP FIVE FINISHED PRODUCT
The finished rug is complete and is able to be purchased by a customer to transform their living space.

CHOOSING A RUG BY SIZE
Rugs add impact by enhancing the decor that lies above it. Determining where the rug will be placed is crucial to deciding the size of the rug you purchase. For example, in a 4' x 6' foyer, a 3' x 5' rug would look most appropriate. Any smaller and the rug makes no visual impact. Any larger and you lose the “framing” effect a rug creates on the flooring below.
Suggested Spaces: Bedroom, Living Room, Dining Room, Foyer/Entryway, or Office
Suggested Spaces: Dining Room or Foyer/Entryway

Suggested Spaces: Living Room, Dining Room, or Office
*More sizes available. Not all rugs are available in all sizes. Additionally, because some of our rugs are handmade, some sizes may vary slightly from dimensions listed.
LIVING ROOM
For smaller living rooms, or if you’d rather not have furniture on your rug aside from a coffee table, use a 5' x 8' rug. If you prefer the front legs of your furniture on the rug, go with at least an 8' x 11'. For oversized furniture or to create a defined space, choose a 9' x 12' or larger.
x 8'
DINING ROOM
For smaller tables and dining rooms, use a round, square, or 5’ x 8’ rug. For larger dining rooms and tables for siz or more people, use a 7’9” x 9’9” or larger to frame the table and chairs. Remember to leave enough room for chairs to slide in and out from the table without catching the edge of the rug.
HOME OFFICE
When choosing a rug for your home office, consider the size of the room, whether or not you’ll have chairs for clients, and if you want those chairs on the rug as well. Use a 5' x 8' for smaller offices and an 8' x 10' for larger areas.
BEDROOM
For king and queen sized beds, layer the rug horizontally underneath. A king size bed calls for at least an 8’ x 10’ and usually a 9’ x 12’. Anything smaller will appear out of proportion. For queen beds, both an 8’ x 10’ and a 9’ x 12’ will work, but remember the larger rug has the effect of making the room look bigger. As for full or twin sized beds. Layer the rug horizontally underneath or use a runner next to a bed against the wall.

CHOOSING A RUG BY COLOR AND TREND
PAIR USING COMPLEMENTARY COLORS
MATCH TO EXISTING COLORS
Use the same color palette from elsewhere in the room to choose your rug. This designer chose a Micah rug to complement the black bookshelves and Eames chairs in this study. The classic contrast styling of the rug pairs well with the sleek accents in the room.
Pull complementary colors from the rug to use as a color palette for the rest of the room. This designer pulled black and white to match this Norah rug to the linen couch and geometric pillow. The natural wood coffee table complements the natural texture of the wool in the rug for a serene space.
MATCH TO TREND/MOTIF
Use the motif or design trend to guide you! This designer placed our Marquette rug in this kitchen for a traditional style. The colors of the rug pair well with the warmth of the room.
CARE AND CLEANING BASED ON FIBER
There are different ways to clean a rug, depending on the fiber it is made up of. Always follow the care instructions that come with a rug. The following tips may not apply to all rugs.
Cotton
Small cotton rugs are usually machine washable. In these cases, wash the rug in warm water with a mild detergent. Larger cotton rugs should be treated with a dry cleaning powder.
Wool
New wool rugs will usually shed. Vacuum at least once a week without the beater bar. Use a common mild detergent with a teaspoon of neutral detergent and a teaspoon of white vinegar mixed in a quart of warm water to clean any liquid stains.
Silk
Silk rugs should be professionally cleaned to ensure the delicate fibers are properly cared for. To prevent UV damage, avoid placing the rug in direct sunlight, and regularly vacuum it with a brushless suction head to remove dirt and debris, ensuring that you disable the beater bar first before vacuuming. If you must, use a gentle, clear, acid-based detergent safe for silk fibers and test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first.
Sisal
Blot any stains with a dry cloth, then use a mixture of water and vinegar to treat the stain.
Jute
Dab with small amounts of club soda or use a damp, soapy cloth to treat any stains.
Polypropylene
Vacuum at least once a week without the beater bar. Use a common mild detergent with a teaspoon of neutral detergent and a teaspoon of white vinegar mixed in a quart of warm water to clean any liquid stains.
Polyester
Vacuum at least once a week without the beater bar. Use a common mild detergent with a teaspoon of neutral detergent and a teaspoon of white vinegar mixed in a quart of warm water to clean any liquid stains.
Viscose
Rugs made of viscose should be professionally cleaned. Between cleanings use a spot cleaner that emits very little moisture. Viscose does not react well to moisture, so extra care must be taken in the cleaning of these rugs.
Acrylic
Use a solution of detergent and vinegar mixed in water or a common cleaning detergent to treat any stains.
VACUUMING *
*Remove or disable the beater bar on your vacuum. Don’t use Robotic vacuums.
Regular Pile
Vacuum regularly, at least once a week with a regular pile.
Loop/Braided
The best option is to set the vacuum at its highest setting.
Shags
Shake out a shag rug first to loosen all dirt and particles from it. Use a handheld attachment to vacuum shag rugs.
MAINTAINING YOUR INVESTMENT
Color Variation
Each Feizy Rug is unique. The color in handmade rugs can vary from piece to piece as dyes change over time.
Shedding
While shedding will gradually diminish (depending on traffic volume), in some cases, it cannot be avoided. Wool rugs will always shed, but after 25-30 vacuums, you should see a decrease. However, some rugs will shed over the course of their lifetime.
Sprouting
Occasionally, a loop in your rug may pull up from the pile. Use a pair of scissors to cut the loop even with the surrounding pile. Do not pull the loop as this can make the problem worse.
Creasing
If your rug is rolled or folded during shipping, it may have creases. Creasing should disappear in a few weeks while the rug is laid out. Reverse rolling the rug overnight can accelerate this process.
Odor
Shipping rugs in a sealed wrap can saturate odors from dyes and yarns into the pile. Once the rug is exposed to fresh air, most odors will dissipate within a few days to a week.
Fading
Even color in fade resistant rugs can fade over time if exposed to direct or indirect sunlight.
Wear
Over time, rug wear is unavoidable. All rugs should be rotated two to four times a year to balance and evenly distribute color and traffic wear.
Soil
Walking over your rug with shoes on can impart dirt and other particles. Over time, these particles can work down through the pile and deteriorate the foundation of your rug.
