Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the ďŹ rst for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. These are the years where their world-view begins to take shape, where the words we say and the ways we treat them begin to take root into their minds and into their spirits. That’s why we created the 20 Under 20 Awards. In an age where to be social is to be recognized and to be popular is to be important, we found it necessary to give recognition to those whose work might go unnoticed and whose efforts might be negated. Words are important, which is why

in this, our inaugural publication of the Southwest 20 Under 20 in STEM and Leadership honorees, we pay tribute to twenty young women in Southern Dallas County by sharing the words that others said about them.

A’ Myrie Fre e n y | D e So t o H ig h S c ho o l A’Myrie is a young servant leader who puts other’s needs before hers. She loves to work with special needs kids and has volunteered as such since elementary. She is an ECHS-STEM student and is currently a leader in the AIM-IRS Youth Program and Gear-Up. She has always been a help mate for teachers and staff while maintaining her academics and sports. While attending McCowan Middle School, she was the i-STEAM ambassador for the school from 6-8 grade. She was the class President and Mentor, tutoring students of all grade levels. She participates in community service initiatives and also attended the Pre-Freshman Engineering program at Cedar Valley over the summer. A’Myrie was a part of the winning team representing DeSoto in a TWU-STEM edible food contest. This past year, she was awarded the DeSoto ISD Citizenship of the year award for Academic Excellence and Leadership at a Board Meeting by the administration, and was also recognized for her leadership and completion of the first Glenn Heights Fire Academy ACE program initiative. A’Myrie is also a Junior Honor Society inductee.

Abiba Mo n c r i ff e | We s t Mid d l e S c ho o l Abiba Imani Moncriffe is exceptional in Leadership. She always seeks out opportunities to help her fellow students. During the past school year, she earned the following awards: Junior Energy Manager, Desoto ISD Spelling Champion, 3rd Place in the RYE Oratorical Competition, SOAR awards for Reading and English, and also served on the Student Council. Throughout her years at Ruby Young Elementary, she quickly stood out as a leader amongst her peers. Abiba is also a gifted speaker, who uses her voice to advocate for others, as well as herself. At the young age of 11, she understands, and has carefully thought out opinions about politics, the environment, education, and her place in the world. She is already a fierce proponent of issues affecting girls and women. Always a critical thinker, Abiba has excellent analytical skills, and is not afraid to express her opinions. Indeed, one of her role models is Malala Yousafzai, who stood up for the right of girls to learn in Pakistan. As her mother, I am exceedingly proud of the young lady she is growing up to be. She continues to amaze me each day with her creativity, her leadership skills, and her zest for learning. In short, Abiba is poised, and ready to be polished as a Global leader.

L a i l a Harre l l | M c Co w a n M id d l e S c ho o l Laila strives to be an all-around leader. Although sometimes quiet, she has proven that she doesn't have to follow the crowd. She proved teachers wrong when she became the Student Council Secretary because they thought she would be too shy to give speech. She has been a Girl Scout for 5 years, setting goals with her cookie sales and surpassing them. She isn't afraid to speak up about anything or to anyone. Laila is an “A” student; she was the only 5th grader to maintain all A's last year at her school. She has received SOAR medals each year and has already set the goal of maintaining her “A” average for this year. She is a leader because she is a positive friend and peacemaker. She desires to see the good in everyone, especially girls. She started a phase amongst her friends called "Girl love," meaning that if someone is saying something negative about another girl, instead of agreeing or not saying anything, she says "GIRL LOVE.” Laila is also patient and if she doesn't understand something, she is the first to ask for guidance.
