UNI SANS_

CREATED BY

SVETOSLAV SIMOV / 2009

REASON FOR EXISTANCE For general use for print and web, with a strong suit with on screen readability. Use mostly for text and display. Uni Sans was made to look futuristic and modern without being Sci-Fi. It can be beautiful with human characteristics, it is not fully mechanical. Stemming from DIN, there is a certain elegance and sophistication. Uni Sans was made with INDUSTRIAL SIMPLICITY, AS ARE WE ALL. WEIGHTS There are 7 weights + italics, each containing a wide range of versatility. With fluid stems and simple italics, Uni Sans creates an elegant combination between both geometry & calligraphy. BRIEF CONCEPTUAL REVIEW The idea for this book was deeply inspired by EPICAC. I short story that was written by Kurt Vonnegut in 1950. A story before it's time, EPICAC forshadowed the first doubts of the relationship between humanily and it's machines. Being alive post the first Industrial Revolution, living through the second , and dying at the beginning ot the third. Vonnegut had a thing ot to say about mechanization and stong opinions about where it it would lead with full faith. The Meat Machine is a sort of sequal to the EPICAC, based on developing theoried of Singularity and touching on, but by no means taking lightly, the answer to the human condition. There are two stories being told: one of the future, that describes the basis of common Singularity theories and the agvantages and disadvantages of being posthuman, and the second it that of the past foreshadowing the future. Both parallel each other on two different planes; each strong enought to stand alone, so read seperately or together.

the word is singularity, the idea is human robots

The term singularity describes the moment when a civilization changes so much that its rules and technologies are incomprehensible to previous generations. Think of it as a point-of-no-return in history. Most thinkers believe the singularity will be jump-started by extremely rapid technological and scientific changes. These changes will be so fast, and so profound, that every aspect of our society will be transformed, from our bodies and families to our governments and economies. sin·gu·lar·i·ty noun / ˌsiNGgyəˈlaritē /  singularities, plural +

The state, fact, quality, or condition of being singular

+

A peculiarity or odd trait

+

A point at which a function takes an infinite value, esp. in space-time when matter is infinitely dense, as at the center of a black hole

+

A point in the future ( often set at or around 2030 A.D.) beyond which overwhelming technical changes ( esp. the development of superhuman artificial intelligence) make reliable predictions impossible

SINGULARITY

The Singularity is the technological creation of smarter-than-human intelligence. There are several technologies that are often mentioned as heading in this direction. The most commonly mentioned is probably Artificial Intelligence, but there are others: direct brain-computer interfaces, biological augmentation of the brain, genetic engineering, ultra-highresolution scans of the brain followed by computer emulation. Some of these technologies seem likely to arrive much earlier than the others, but there are nonetheless several independent technologies all heading in the direction of the Singularity – several different technologies which, if they reached a threshold level of sophistication, would enable the creation of smarter-than-human intelligence. A future that contains smarter-than-human minds is genuinely different in a way that goes beyond the usual visions of a future filled with bigger and better gadgets. Vernor Vinge originally coined the term "Singularity" in observing that, just as our model of physics breaks down when it tries to model the singularity at the center of a black hole, our model of the world breaks down when it tries to model a future that contains entities smarter than human.

POSTHUMAN

WASTELAND WARNING

As mentioned earlier, artificial intelligence is the technology that most people believe will usher in the singularity. Authors like Vinge and singulatarian Ray Kurzweil think AI will usher in the singularity for a twofold reason. First, creating a new form of intelligent life will completely change our understanding of ourselves as humans. Second, AI will allow us to develop new technologies so much faster than we could before that our civilization will transform rapidly. A corollary to AI is the development of robots who can work alongside - and beyond - humans. Another singularity technology is the self-replicating molecular machine, also called autonomous nanobots, "gray goo," and a host of other things. Basically the idea is that if we can build machines that manipulate matter at the atomic level, we can control our world in the most granular way imaginable. And if these machines can work on their own?

it under one corner of t he blotter on Pat's desk. I reset t he dials on EPICAC for a rocket trajectory problem, and went home wit h a full heart and a very remarkable secret indeed. Pat was crying over t he poem when I came to work t he next evening. "It's soooo beaut iful," was all she could say. She was meek and quiet while we worked. Just before midnight, I kissed her for t he first t ime--in t he cubby hole between t he capacitors and EPICAC's tape-recorder memory. I was wildly happy at quitt ing t ime, burst ing to talk to someone about t he magnificent turn of events. Pat played coy and refused to let me take her home. I set EPICAC's dials as t hey had been t he night before, defined kiss, and told him what t he first one had felt like. He was fascinated, pressing for more details. That night, he wrote "The Kiss." It wasn't an epic t his t ime, but a simple, immaculate sonnet: "Love is a hawk wit h velvet claws; Love is a rock wit h heart and veins; Love is a lion wit h sat in jaws; Love is a storm wit h silken reins...." Again I left it tucked under Pat's blotter. EPICAC wanted to talk on and on about love and such, but I was exhausted. I shut him off in t he middle of a sentence. "The Kiss" turned t he trick. Pat's mind was mush by t he t ime she had finished it. She looked up from t he sonnet expectantly. I cleared my t hroat, but no words came. I turned away, pretending to work. I couldn't propose unt il I had t he right words from EPICAC, t he _perfect_ words. I stayed unt il dawn, decoding. When t he sun peeped over t he horizon at t he Wyandotte campus, I had transposed into my own writ ing and signed my name to a two-hunderd-and-eighty-line poem ent itled, simply, "To Pat." I am no judge of such t hings, but I gat her t hat it was terrific. It began, I remember, "Where willow wands bless rillcrossed hollow, t here, t hee, Pat, dear, will I follow...." In 1965, I.J. Good proposed that machines would one day be smart enough to make themselves smarter. Having made themselves smarter, they would spot still further opportunities for improvement, quickly leaving human intelligence far behind [3]. He c conferences. Below, we make the case for taking artificial intelligence (AI) risks seriously, and suggest some strategies to reduce those risks. What We're (not) AboutThe Singularity Institute doesn't know exactly when the intelligence explosion will occur, but w software problem that will require new insight, not a hardware problem that will fall to Moore's Law. We are interested in rational analyses of AI risks, not storytelling. Notions of a "robot rebellion," in which AIs spontaneously develop primate-like resentment fo networks and autonomous robotics could radically alter their environment. For example, they could harvest all available solar, chemical, and nuclear energy. If such AIs found uses for this energy that better furthered their goals than supporting human life, hu to reproduction rather than to supporting humans [1]. Such unsafe AIs might actively mimic safe benevolence until they became powerful, since being destroyed would prevent them from working toward their goals. Thus, a broad range of AI designs may initia Each improvement in AI technology increases the ability of AIs to research more improvements, but an AI may also face the problem of diminishing returns as the easiest improvements are achieved first. The rate of improvement is hard to estimate, but severa by that time be a glut of hardware available to run many copies of AIs, and to run them at high speeds. This could amplify the effects of AI improvements [8]. Humans are not optimized for intelligence. Rather, we are the first and possibly dumbest species ca We don't know how to build an AI with human-level intelligence, so we can't have much confidence that it will arrive in the next few decades. But we also can't rule out unforeseen advances. Past underestimates of the difficulty of AI (perhaps most infamous learning algorithms [17], increasing R&D expenditures by the technology industry, hardware advances that make computation-hungry algorithms feasible [4], enormous datasets [5], and insights from neuroscience give us advantages that past researchers lac

Friendly AI Concern about the risks of future AI technology has led some commentators, such as Sun co-founder Bill Joy, to suggest the global regulation and restriction of such technologies [9]. However, appropriately designed AI could offer similarly enorm difficult to enforce. The Singularity Institute's primary approach to reducing AI risks has thus been to promote the development of AI with benevolent motivations that are reliably stable under self-improvement, what we call "Friendly AI" [22].

To very quickly summarize some of the key ideas in Friendly AI We can't make guarantees about the final outcome of an agent's interaction with the environment, but we may be able to make guarantees about what the agent is trying to do, given its knowledge. We can't determine that Deep Blue will win against Kaspa Because code executes on the almost perfectly deterministic environment of a computer chip, we may be able to make strong guarantees about an agent's motivations (including how that agent rewrites itself), even though we can't logically prove the outc ing catastrophic effects. Gandhi doesn't want to kill people. If someone offers Gandhi a pill that he knows will alter his brain to make him want to kill people, then Gandhi will likely refuse to take the pill. In the same way, most utility functions should be stable under reflection, prov of possible minds and selecting an AI that prefers to be Friendly. Human terminal values are extremely complicated. This complexity is not introspectively visible at a glance. The solution to this problem may involve designing an AI to learn human values by looking at humans, asking questions, scanning human brains, The explicit moral values of human civilization have changed over time, and we regard this change as progress. We also expect that progress may continue in the future. An AI programmed with the explicit values of 1800 might now be fighting to reestablis we knew everything you know" and "do what we would've told you to do if we thought as fast as you do and could consider many more possible lines of moral argument" and "do what we would tell you to do if we had your ability to reflect on and modify ou Seeding research programs As we get closer to advanced AI, it will be easier to learn how to reduce risks effectively. The interventions to focus on today are those whose benefits will compound over time. Possibilities include:

Friendly AI: Theoretical computer scientists can investigate AI architectures that self-modify while retaining stable goals. Theoretical toy systems exist now: Gödel machines make provably optimal self-improvements given certain assumptions [19]. Decisio Stable brain emulations: One route to safe AI may start with human brain emulation. Neuroscientists can investigate the possibility of emulating the brains of individual humans with known motivations, while evolutionary theorists can investigate methods Models of AI risks: Researchers can build models of AI risks and of AI growth trajectories, using tools from game theory, evolutionary analysis, computer security, or economics [1] [6] [8] [14] [22]. If such analysis is done rigorously it can help to channel the

Institutional improvements: Major technological risks are ultimately navigated by society as a whole. Success requires that society understand and respond to scientific evidence. Knowledge of the biases that distort human thinking around catastrophic risk avoiding an AI "arms race" that might be won by the competitor most willing to trade off safety measures for speed [20]. Our aims We aim to seed the above research programs. We are too small to carry out all the needed research ourselves, but we can get the ball rolling.

We have groundwork already. We have: (a) seed research about catastrophic AI risks and AI safety technologies; (b) human capital; and (c) programs that engage outside research talent, including our annual Singularity Summits and our Visiting Fellows pro

Going forward, we plan to continue our recent growth by scaling up our visiting fellows program, extending the Singularity Summits and similar academic networking, and writing further papers to seed the above research programs, in-house or with the bes The upside and downside of artificial intelligence

Human intelligence is the most powerful known biological technology. But our place in history probably rests not on our being the smartest intelligences that could exist, but rather on being the first intelligences that did exist. We probably are to intelligence The future of intelligence is, hopefully, much greater than its past. The origin and shape of human intelligence may end up playing a critical role in the origin and shape of future civilizations on a much larger scale than one planet. And the origin and shape future civilization. Recommended reading

warning

W ARNI N G: I stayed until dawn, decoding. When the sun peeped over the horizon at the Wyandotte campus, I had transposed into my own writing and signed my name to a two-hunderd-and-eighty-line poem entitled, simply, "To Pat." I am no judge of such things, but I gather that it was terrific. It began, I remember, "Where willow wands bless rill-crossed hollow, there, thee, Pat, dear, will I follow...." I folded the manuscript and tucked it under one corner of the blotter on Pat's desk. I reset the dials on EPICAC for a rocket trajectory problem, and went home with a full heart and a very remarkable secret indeed. Pat was crying over the poem when I came to work the next evening. "It's soooo beautiful," was all she could say. She was meek and quiet while we worked. Just before midnight, I kissed her for the first time--in the cubbyhole between the capacitors and EPICAC's tape-recorder memory. I was wildly happy at quitting time, bursting to talk to someone about the magnificent turn of events. Pat played coy and refused to let me take her home. I set EPICAC's dials as they had been the night before, defined kiss, and told him what the first one had felt like. He was fascinated, pressing for more details. That night, he wrote "The Kiss." It wasn't an epic this time, but a simple, immaculate sonnet: "Love is a hawk with velvet claws; Love is a rock with heart and veins; Love is a lion with satin jaws; Love is a storm with silken reins...."

Again I left it tucked under Pat's blotter. EPICAC wanted to talk on and on about love and such, but I was exhausted. I shut him off in the middle of a sentence. "The Kiss" turned the trick. Pat's mind was mush by the time she had finished it. She looked up from the sonnet expectantly. I cleared my throat, but no words came. I turned away, pretending to work. I couldn't propose until I had the right words from EPICAC, the _perfect_ words.

MANUAL _ Handling Instructions HANDLING All inputs and outputs of Intersil CMOS devices have a network for electrostatic protection during handling. OPERATING OPERATING VOLTAGE During operation near the maximum supply voltage limit care should be taken to avoid or suppress power supply turn-on and turn-off transients, power supply ripple, or ground noise; any of these conditions must not cause VDD - VSS to exceed the absolute maximum rating. IMPUT SIGNALS To prevent damage to the input protection circuit, input signals should never be greater than VDD nor less than VSS. Input currents must not exceed 10mA even when the power supply is off. UNUSED INPUTS A connection must be provided at every input terminal. All unused input terminals must be connected to either VDD or VSS, whichever is appropriate. OUTPUT SHORT CIRCUITS Shorting of outputs to VDD or VSS may damage CMOS devices by exceeding the maximum device dissipation.

MANUAL _ Sleep Mode HOW TO ACCESS YOUR SLEEP SETTINGS To correctly find your sleep mode button, give your self audio voice command. Begin with saying your correct identificaiton number and password out loud to yourself. Don't worry if others hear you, only your commands in your unique modulated voice with access your personal main control. Once verified, voice one of the commanding controls:

+ + +

SLEEP MODE ENERGY SAVING MODE WAKE UP CALL

After 30 seconds, you will have entered into one of the three modes. SLEEP MODE When in SLEEP MODE you will have to enter and appoximated wake time before you can enter into the mode. This ensures that you don't need to use emergency wake up. Also, this allows your system to save energy. Simply voice the time, am/ pm, that you would like to wake. There is a snooze command you can set for wake up as well. HOW TO COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN When completely shutting down, make sure that you are in a proper storage facility so that you can stay safe in shut down mode. It is dangerous to completely power down and should only be used with a technician. There is a code that the proper technician needs to input into your system before you can access this control. POWERING BACK UP When powering back up, you need a technican to get into your main controls when you are hooked up to the main mind controls. With the proper equipement, you can safely be powered back up. This may take 1-10 minuted depending on your unique programmin. To boot up in an emergeny, please turn to page 101.
