Personal Statement
As a child, I had always been curious about the wonders of the built environment. Growing up, I had decent skills in art and found passion in drawing, sketching, and photography. I decided to pursue architecture right after completing my Sijil Pengajian Malaysia in Form 5, having had virtually no experience in the field; and, unlike most of my friends, I had no relations to anyone in the construction industry. My father works as a manager in a rubber factory, my mother is a homemaker, my older brother an aeronautical engineer, and my younger sister specialising in bioscience. Like most of my coursemates, I entered architecture thinking it would be a breeze - I soon realised that I was dead wrong. Now, after completing my undergraduate studies, and having worked with various firms, I realise that architecture is all about process. Throughout the four years of my studies, I found it increasingly common for architects to design buildings with no relation to its context, with no sensitivity towards the social and cultural aspects of the community. On the contrary, I strongly believe in the idea of place-making; that for a design to be successful, it must engage and interact with its users, as well as encouraging social interaction between its users.
In architecture, I believe that we as designers have a huge amount of responsibility towards our environment. As a future designer and as a person in general, I look up to the likes of Ken Yeang, who truly take into consideration the development of ecological and bioclimatic buildings, placing importance on not just the ecological attributes of the site, but on the comfort of its users as well. By rejecting the “synthetic and artificial aesthetics of conventional buildings, architecture should be able to blend with the surrounding landscape and impact the environment in a meaningful way. With that in mind, I consider myself to be enthusiastic, hardworking, and competent, possessing the necessary skills and technical ability. With these attributes, I believe that I am capable of meeting the demands of this career.

The site is located within the Royal Belum Rainforest in Gerik, Perak. It is believed to be over 130 million years old. During the ‘Malayan Emergency’, communists hid in the jungles, and because of this, the Malaysian government ordered the forest to be flooded, causing part of the forest reserve to be man-made. 3
The Nature Appreciation Centre is inspired by the movements of the pillbug, which can be found on site. When sensing harm, the pillbug curls up for protection, and vice versa. The NAC embraces and opens up to its users to learn about and appreciate nature through a variety of programmes; such as planting, in-class learning, and outdoor activites.

02 Sentul Community Library In a seemingly dormant site dominated by the ever-growing development of high-rises, the library aims to revitalise the site by engaging the community of Sentul. The library aims to serve as a gathering point for the community of Sentul, through the implementation of resting spaces, community workshops, and food stalls.

difference in hierarchy and scale of buildings
The proposed library is located at Jalan Haji Salleh in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. The relationship between the site and its neigbouring buildings indicates a clear difference in scale and hierarchy. The site is fairly accesible due to the presence of a train station within 5 minutes walking distance. Architecturally, the site consists of mainly post-modernism style 11

Putrajaya was the brainchild of former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a desire to create a new Federal Government Administrative Centre to replace Kuala Lumpur. The planned city is located strategically between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The site is situated at Precint 4, consisting of mainly administrative buildings and the ‘Iron Mosque’. The site is located between a park and JAKIM, and faces the man-made Putrajaya Lake where water-sport activites are often held.

Programme The performing arts programme is oriented towards the Putrajaya Lake, whereas the commercial programme is oriented towards the road.
Accessibility Each building block is pushed towards an access point to enhance visual connection to and from incoming users and traffic. Permeability The ground floor is lifted to allow ease of circulation and a continuation of movement from the road to the lakeside, and vice versa.
Link The programmes are connected through a common public space.
Landscape In relation to the physical aspect of the site, the landscape flows from softscape to hardscape.

Redecorating PAWS Animal Welfare Society
2
Located facing a busy highway on the Subang Airport Road, the PAWS Animal Welfare Society is a financially independent animal shelter which houses around 400 500 stray cats and dogs. Our team made the decision to engage with PAWS and revitalise the run down shelter, both inside and out, to attract potential adopters.

We started out by levelling out the pile of soil that was dumped on site by neighbouring constructions and plucking out the overgrown weeds.

6
Then, by recycling old tyres and using them as a ‘container’, we planted different flowers along the path to add vibrance and indicate a clear path to the shelter.

Apart from the exterior, we helped to repaint certain parts of the shelter that were old and weathered. We also came up with different options for a mural, and eventually chose to go with option 2, which to us, signified a desire of freedom for the animals.

Overall, the most important thing I learnt from this project was the impact each individual has on the environment, from our actions, down to the choice of materials used - be it new or recycled. Most importantly, we enjoyed the process and felt privileged to be able to contribute to the shelter, all the while raising awareness towards animal welfare among the public.
