The proposed community library is located at Jalan Haji Salleh in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. The site is an infill consisting of 3 shophouses. Sentul is fairly accesible due to the presence of a train station which is within 5 minutes walking distance. Many amenties exist in the area, including eateries, schools, markets, and religious buildings. Many new residential and office high-rises have emerged due to the recent boom in property development. This change can be clearly seen through the drastic difference in scale and hierarchy between the old and new buildings.

The proposed library is targeted towards children, young adults, and students particularly from the school behind the site. The library aims to be a gathering place for the community of Sentul to gain and exchange knowledge through workshops and seminars. The ground floor will consist of a courtyard and food centre, as well as a community kitchen where children can learn soft skills such as cooking, communication, and how to manage a kitchen.

5
Research Centre For the prototyping of new materials. Workshops, seminars and lectures are held to educate the public about resource management.

Images 1. Location plan 2. Site boundary 3. Major road surrounding the site 4, 5, & 6. Remnants of the ancient temples on site
Despite this, the site is not well-preserved and there is a general lack of appreciation for the site. The site also experiences large volumes of traffic leading to major noise, waste, and air pollution. The proposal therefore aims to address issues of waste and raise awareness about the importance of adopting smarter consumer habits, while serving as a place of reprieve in the center of the city.
Hostel
Accomodation for visiting artisans and researchers. This also builds relationships while encouraging collaboration.
Community Garden
Space for leisure activities where users are educated on sustainable farming. Produce from the garden is supplied to the in-house cafe and sold at farmers markets.

Fragmentation and play of levels is implemented to enhance visual connectivity between key spaces. The preservation of streetscape is also emphasised so as to not obstruct views of the site.
4.The building is terraced to allow further distribution of sunlight.
5. Separation of public (recycling centre and community garden) and private spaces (research centre and hostel).
6. The mass is fragmented to enhance the visual connection between each space and the context, also enabling the overall structure to be less dense.

Creative & Culture Hub Brighton, UK Inspired by the rich arts and cultural heritage of the city while addressing issues of underdevelopment and poverty, the project aims to act as an urban platform for cultural exchange by merging the arts, culture, and business to stimulate Brighton’s creative economy. The site lies opposite to the North Laines, which is home to Brighton’s culture and arts district. Neighbouring buildings include the Royal Pavilion, healthcare organisations such as clinics and a community welfare centre, and educational institutions for ages ranging from children (nursery) to young adults (university).
University of Brighton
Carlton Hill Primary School
Currently a car parking space, the site is restricted in terms of mobility as it is only accessible through the northern edge of the site. However, there is good potential for the regeneration and development of a community project due to the diversity of facilities nearby. This would help to facilitate cross-sector collaboration between the arts, well-being and education.
Prior to the current urban planning, Brighton’s pattern of development was defined by long, narrow strips of land which belonged to many different owners.
The proposed scheme seeks to re-introduce the concept of accessibility to and through the site. The project also aims to instill a sense of ownership to its users and the community.

Mount Hope School Extension The founders of the boarding school in West Kalimantan, a couple from New Zealand, initiated the brief to build the extension to an existing classroom block. Working in a team of 16, we spent aweekend at the school to volunteer with construction preparation. Tasks included digging trenches which would later be cast with concrete for column footings.
PAWS Animal Welfare Society In a group, we were required to revitalise and promote the shelter which was in poor condition. Donations and charity drives were organised to raise money for materials and resources where necessary. Over a few weeks, we designed planters with recycled tyres, and repainted the interior of the shelter after deliberating several mural options.
