Introduction Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production. In general a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means and that produced using electronic technology. Examples of electromechanical sound producing devices include the telharmonium, Hammond organ, and the electric guitar. Purely electronic sound production can be achieved using devices such as the Theremin, sound synthesizer, and computer. Electronic music was once associated almost exclusively with Western art music but from the late 1960s on the availability of affordable music technology meant that music produced using electronic means became increasingly common in the popular domain. Today electronic music includes many varieties and ranges from experimental art music to popular forms such as electronic dance music Now, Experimental Electronic is quite something else.

Flying Lotus Flying Lotus was born Steven Ellison on October 7, 1983, in Los Angeles, California. He is the grandnephew of the late jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, and her husband saxophonist John Coltrane. He is also the cousin of musician Ravi Coltrane. Additionally, he is the grandson of singer/songwriter Marilyn McLeod, who is notable for having written Diana Ross‘s „Love Hangover“ and Freda Payne‘s „I Get High (On Your Memory)“. Steven Ellison (born October 7, 1983), known by his stage name Flying Lotus, is an experimental multi-genre music producer and rapper from Los Angeles, California. Flying Lotus has released four studio albums—1983 (2006), Los Angeles (2008), Cosmogramma (2010), and Until the Quiet Comes (2012)—to increasing critical acclaim.3]4] He has produced much of the bumper music on Cartoon Network‘s Adult Swim programming block.5] He also contributed remixes for fellow Plug Research artists including Mia Doi Todd. He is often referred to as FlyLo by fans and critics. In 2012, Ellison began rapping under the persona Captain Murphy. Ellison kept the fact that he was Captain Murphy a secret for several months, finally revealing it several weeks after the release of his first rap mixtape, Duality.

Hudson Mohawke At the age of 15, Birchard (under the name DJ Itchy) was the youngest ever UK DMC finalist. His earliest gigs as a club DJ were with Glasgow University‘s Subcity Radio where he first appeared as part of the culture city kids show and later as part of other shows including Turntable Science with Pro Vinylist Karim and Cloudo‘s Happy Hardcore show, under the alias DJ Mayhem. Birchard became „Hudson Mohawke“ after seeing the name engraved on a statue in the hallway of his accommodation. In 2009, Hudson Mohawke signed to Warp Records, despite a very limited track record of official releases; in fact, the bulk of his releases were unofficial tracks and DJ mixes circulated on the Internet. His first official release to get major notice was entitled „Spotted“ on the Rush Hour beat compilation Beat Dimensions Vol 1, which then lead to a release entitled „Free Mo“, a track on the Ubiquity Records various-artists compilation Choices, Vol. 1 (2007); subsequently, he was featured as a remixer on Choices, Vol. 2 (2007). In 2008 his 12“ EP Ooops! on LuckyMe/Wireblock became an underground sensation, particularly once word spread of his recording contract with Warp.

Machinedrum Travis Stewart was born on March 4, 1982 in Eden, North Carolina. He was exposed to a wide range of musical influences in his childhood. His grandfather played pedal steel for a country band, and gave Stewart his first guitar. His first recordings were made at his grandparents‘ house, around the age of 5 or 6. His parents kept a house full of instruments, and a singer-songwriter cousin continually exposed him to new sounds and ideas. He fostered an interest with polyrhythms while playing marching snare in his high school band, and the djembe in an African ensemble. Stewart played in two local alternative bands, before turning more towards electronic music around the time of 8th grade. Using handed down computers, he began to produce his own music, and connected with a community of likeminded musicians over the internet. He started the Machinedrum project during his final two years of high school, between 1998 and 1999. After graduation, he attended Full Sail University in Florida to study audio engineering. In 2001, at the age of 19, he released his first record as Machinedrum, Now You Know, on Merck Records.
