CONSCIOUSNESS OF SPACE
Space as a touristic destination is becoming a reality. This project, located in a very public street in Austin, Texas, is envisioned as training center for space travelers. The urban, historical and physical conditions of the site were important elements in the formal development of the concept. However, the driving idea was the experience of space, physically and psychologically, thus the design is an experiment with color, light and scale to challenge its perception. . Placed in the Sixth Street Historic Distric in Austin the building with its fluid and irregular façade sits in sharp contrast to the ordered Victorian Architecture of its neighbors. However, the building’s scale and proportions allow it to fit with its context. The windowless façade is a hard threshold separating the bustling street outside from the contrasting spatial conditions inside. Through light, scale and materiality the building constructs an environment that challenges familiar consciousness of space. In this scheme, a glass -encased pool used for training is a central feature. Puncturing through the floors of the building the pool is a translucent volume that allows a distorted perception of the space beyond..
INNER SPACE
The undulating roof seems to dissolve the deeper one ventures into the building. The contrasting walls of the narrow building intend to communicate the inconclusiveness of space which is not contained but restricted. Rays of light project onto the brick wall moving trhoughout the day, conveying a dimension of time in space. The building for the training center is an object in its context, engaging the visitor from the street and challenging the formal consciousness of the space inside.

RE-GROW ULI HINES COMPETITION Simon Atkinson Advisor New Orleans, LA Spring 2015 with: Wei Xiao, Rebecca Roberts, Allison Riemmer and Yang Chen
Re-Grow is a new community development that will plant seeds of resilience in the TremĂŠ-Lafitte, Iberville, and Tulane-Gravier neighborhoods. The seeds are programs rooted within the development that will utilize food, music, and culture to support economic self-sufficiency within the community. The goals of the development are to support the area's economy, community, environment, and culture. Re-Grow will empower the existing community by generating opportunities for local economic self-reliance and support the creation of Claiborne Cultural District. Re-Grow will honor the people, history, and culture of the community, in addition to supporting mixedincome and mixed-use developments.

Resilient Economy Along the Lafitte Greenway, commercial space will provide opportunities to capitalize on the film industry, and provide recording space to be used by local musicians. Furthermore, a Community Kitchen where area residents can rent space to prepare food for sale, such as jam, and cooperative spaces for artists, will allow area residents to combine their interests and talents and support the local economy.

Cultural Flow At the intersection of Claiborne and the Lafitte Greenway, a Community Center will provide spaces for indoor fitness activities, cultural performances, and public gatherings. Although the oak trees that supported a vibrant public life along Claiborne are gone, Re-Grow will revitalize the area under the elevated highway to make it more welcoming and accessible, promoting music performances, food truck dining, and a marketplace for artisans and farmers in the Claiborne Marketplace.

Maintain Community Character Off-street parking will be out of view and enwrapped with mixed used developments comprised of commercial and residential spaces. The infill development away from the main thoroughfares is compatible with existing single and double shotguns. Re-Grow uses a tactical infill strategy of constructing Accessory Dwelling Units to allow local residents to have access to supplementary income through temporary stay rentals on their own property. For instance, someone visiting family members in the hospital could rent a unit for a couple of weeks. The shotgun style houses lend themselves to this model; one person may own the entire double-shotgun, and will be able to rent out the other shotgun.

BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART 50th ANNIVERSARY LOGO COMPETITION Personal Fall 2012
This design was selected to commemorate the museum's 50th Anniversary. The design was inspired on Kazuya Sakai's Filles de Kilimanjaro III, one of the most notorious pieces in the museum's permanent collection. Kazuya's work called my attention because of its dynamism. Lines appear like tracks left by an object in movement, creating geometries that interest and intrigue. The dichotomy of transience and permanence reects the Blanton's stated mission to inspire an increasingly diverse audience, make deeper connections to the past, present, and future, and rediscover the life-enhancing power of art.

MUSEO FELIX CANDELA ADVANCED STUDIO Juan Miró Mexico City, Mexico Spring 2014 with: Anna Katsios
Candela's vault over the Bolsa de Valores is about space, structure and light. However, on our visit to the building we noticed the presence of the vault is dwarfed by its condition in the building. The Vault is only visible and accessible at the top floor, after a procession of repetitive office volumes. In our proposal, however, this volume/void relationship can be rearranged to create a different experience in and of the building. The building for the Bolsa de Valores is really two buildings, and since our program requires space for the Museo Candela and for the a Research Center for thin shell structures, this prompted the idea of each structure housing a different program. The tall tower would be used for the research center while building at the back would house the museum. Each generating a different, but cohesive, experience of the building.
Current view of the vault above La Bolsa
Taking our volume/void concept the tower is punctured by a suspended volume housing the Felix Candela and UNAM archives. The experience is of heaviness as the visitor walks underneath the archive's dangling box. This move also adds a level of security and separation of the archives while allowing the structure to interact with public. The solid, activates the spaces around it as study and research areas. On the other hand, under Candela's vault, a void is created to expose the potential of the dome and allow it to be experienced from new elevations. Here the experience is of lightness, the vault seems to levitate above the space. The Felix Candela Museum is curated around the void, affording its visitors views from every location.

To increasing pedestrian flow through the building, the project proposes a second phase of the development in which the building to the back, facing the Venustiano Carranza St. is programmed as a commercial space with a café-and an architecture book store. This development would take advantage of the pedestrian flow envisioned for the area. By connecting República de Uruguay and the Venustiano Carranza streets a public axis is created, making the complex more accessible and active even after-hours. Conceptually, we thought on connecting our volume/void idea with the traditional typology of the area. For us the idea of the volume in the courtyard was a provocative way of looking at the traditional courtyards of the Historic District in Mexico City. The experience of the volume in void would be completely different yet cohesive with the other two, completing the architectural promenade. 24

NEW LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH ADVANCED TECHNICAL STUDIO Vince Snyder Dripping Springs, Texas Fall 2013 with: Anna Roe
Our scheme looks into the characteristics of the site to inform the design of both of the landscape and the building. We found that the site is unique in that, from a macroscopic to a microscopic level, it stands as a place of meeting. A meeting of natural areas at a state level, a meeting of shifted county grids, a meeting of two important roads in Dripping Springs and finally a meeting of diverse landscapes within the site. These unique characteristics link back to the primary purpose of the New Life Lutheran Church as a place for the meeting of people, faith and nature. The site is comprise of three large areas that are particular in the way they are used and their natural characteristics. On the North-West corner three large Live Oak trees demarcate a “holy gathering place. The mid-section is particular for expansive meadows that provide beautiful views of the landscape. The third area, on the South-East, is a cedar-populated region that becomes very rocky and rough the closer one gets to the Highway to the East. The proposal for the building follows the same concept of union. Although, there was a requirement to keep some of the programs separate (e.i. offices and fellowship hall) the design arranges these spaces to be connected while keeping their level of independence and privacy.

OBSERVATION
IDENTIFICATION
By analyzing the characteristics of the site we found opportunities for developing different programmed areas such as a wildflower garden, an orchard and a children’s playground. These programs spread throughout the site connected through paths and trails which are a manifestation of the boundaries of the different natural and programmatic areas. The paths allow people to experience the whole site in a walk. A meandering that offers an interaction with the nature of the site. Furthermore, the paths can be connected to trails the city of Dripping Springs is projecting which will open the site to people not in the church, reflecting the desire of the congretation to share their church with others.

PLACING
CONDITIONING
Negotiating the conditions of its surrounding, the building reacts to the implied forces of tension and compression in the intersecting areas. Three buildings house the different programs for the church: a place for worship, a fellowship hall and a multipurpose room for meetings and other activities. The buildings come together to a central space that connects them all. A common space that integrates the different buildings into a whole enhancing the idea of meeting and union.

BODHIDAMMA SCHOOL MASTERPLAN ADVANCED STUDIO Coleman Coker Kenji, India Spring 2015 Team:: Pearleane Cheah, Claire Miller, Becca Brown, Ricardo Diaz, Ben Parker, Henry Wen, Joel Ef and, Alex Dallas, Alex Warr, Siwen Fang , Ageliki Giannisi and Tobias Gutheil
The Bodhidamma School is a project for a Dalit community in Kenji, a village just outside the city of Tiruvannamalai. The Dalits are a social group that had been historically segregated and outcasted from the traditional cast system in India. This school will provide an english-immersion type of education to children from kinder all the way to 12 grade. The studio was tasked with the development of a master plan for the school and with the design of the classrooms, library, cafeteria and offices. From the beginning we were working within very specific parameters: the construction of the building would be carried over by members of the community; also, local material such as compacted earth blocks (CEB) and bamboo were already considered for the design. The idea for the master plan considered the development as a compacted village to reinforce the aspect of community and to provide a certain control over the functions of the school. Also, by efficiently using the available land we could destined some of the area for farming, a manifested interest by members of the community., For the design of the building, we parted fro the necessity of a standard model that could be replicated easily and economically by unskilled labor As a result, we developed a module of 5x5 meters formed by a concrete or steel frame with infilled walls of CEB, designed to provide specific functions such as teaching walls and for ventilation. A full mock up was constructed as part of the studio in Austin, Texas to test alternative materials for the walls and for the construction system.

This project was developed as part of a team including landscape architects, engineers and constructors. The client, Texas Department of Transportation envisioning the enlargement of the 183/Bergstrom highway connecting Austin with the airport, open a call for proposals for the new Expressway’s master plan. MRA’s role was the conception of guidelines for the expression of a cohesive architectural language throughout the development. As part of this job, I was involved in the design of two pedestrian bridges and a pattern to be displayed on the retention walls. Also, my involvement included the production of technical drawings for the final report.

WEST RESIDENCE Mir贸 Rivera Architects Houston, Texas 2014 Team: Nate Schneider, Melissa Hargis-VIllanueva and Arman Hadilou
The West Residence is a residential project for a young family of four. The client couple and their two young daughters wanted a space that was ample with simple design and with an emphasis on the inside/ outside relationship. The social spaces open visually to North and South. A telescoping sliding door open the living room completely to the back yard. Thus, dissolving the limit between inside and outside. The house employs a varied palet of materials such as limestone, metal siding and wood. I was involved in various aspects of the project, 3D model for wall section mock ups, presentation drawings and renderings, and red lines.
