JAANILA COUNTRY
SAINT PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
* This document is a concise graphical overview. More information and detailed project documentation on request.
INTRODUCTION Due to the abundance of large scale developments, St. Petersburg is being increasingly deprived of its public and green spaces, causing an uproar from the city’s residents. New town developments often add little to the city, and act as barriers between the city and it’s surrounding landscapes.
ADDING TO THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT The plan for Jaanila Country breaks with this tradition of individual developments. Commonly privatised facilities are collected into the public realm, adding to the overall urban environment.
NATURE IS BACK IN TOWN Large public spaces allow for the reintegration of nature in the city. And through this the reconnection of the city with it’s surrounding landscapes.
PUBLIC PARK CREATE A CENTRAL PUBLIC SPACE The concept is rooted in a European town planning tradition of large parks amid residential and working neighborhoods. The building blocks are densified and compacted, to release a central open space. A cohesive green core, providing a shared identity to all surrounding neighborhoods.
TREAT EDGES AS INTERFACES The edges are treated as interfaces, establishing strong connections between the neighborhoods and the park. On the western side as a formal boulevard, on the eastern side as an informal walkway.
COLLECT NEIGHBORHOOD FUNCTIONS INTO A PUBLIC PARK To activate the park, functions and facilities which are normally located within the blocks are centralized. As such they contribute to a vibrant public environment.
CREATE SPORTS CLUSTERS AS NEIGHBORHOOD DESTINATIONS Sport facilities are combined into public sport clusters. Together with the kindergartens they create neighborhood destinations in the park.
TRANSFORM PLAYGROUNDS INTO A DYNAMIC PARK LANDSCAPE Play areas are integrated in a 3-dimentional landscape. Grass hills with playgrounds alternate with depressions, which may temporarily fill with water.
CONNECT PARK & NEIGHBORHOODS WITH PUBLIC ANCHORING POINTS Special designed squares along the boulevard in the west, and wooden piers along the flowerpath in the east, connect the park to the neighborhoods.

PRIVATE GARDEN DEFINE COURTYARDS Along the park, buildings are clustered around well defined courtyards. As the park creates a shared identity for all neighborhoods, the courtyards offer a distinctive character to every block.
STRESS THE PERSONAL USE OF OUTDOOR SPACE By stressing the personal use of the outdoor space by residents, the courtyards add to the public qualities of the park. A strip of gardens acts as the interface between the buildings and the surrounding landscape elements. As a mosaic, the infill of the gardens an terraces reflects the diversity of functions in the plinths: residential, commercial, offices and retail.
CONNECT TO ESTABLISH AN INCLUSIVE PUBLIC REALM The permeable perimeter blocks preserve openings inbetween the different buildings. These zones are the joints between the gardens, the park and the surrounding streets. They link the private and public realm together into a rich and diverse whole.
DESIGN GARDENS AS ENCHANTING REALMS & APPEALING SPECTACLE Every courtyard creates a distinctive character. Playgrounds, seating areas and flowerbeds are designed as threedimensional objects, within an appealing theme and pattern. This releases gardens as enchanting realms to be, and appealing spectacle look at from your apartment.

ROBUST GESTURES MAXIMIZE OUTPUT OF INVESTMENT & MINIMIZE DEPENDENCY ON MAINTENANCE Many new towns invest heavily in the construction of extraordinary urban landscapes. Rough climate conditions, and often deficient maintenance policies turn them into redundant places with a glorious past. In Jaanila Country several smart solutions are implemented.
COLOR THE ORDINARY TO MAKE IT SPECIAL We don’t want to compromise the future by the present. Instead of designing crazy-shaped objects, we applied robust standard elements. Painting them all orange turns them into a bright collection of urban accessories.
A PARK FOR EVERY DAY & EVERY SEASON STRETCH THE TIMEFRAME OF USE The park needs to be an appealing incentive to get people outside, turning the public realm into a vibrant space.
ELEVATE THE PATHS The paths of the park are slightly lifted, to ensure dry walkways in autumn, winter and spring. Special rounded curbs preserve the accessibility to the surrounding green zones.

PUT PLAYGROUND ON A HILL Playgrounds are put on grass hills, as dry platforms to play on from spring till autumn. And, they create a topographic and scenic snow landscape in winter.
START TOMORROW PLANT BIG TREES Landscapes need time to grow, but people are living in them from tomorrow on. To give the project a little boost, and ensure that our images are not perceived as fortune telling the next 30 years, special effort is put in the careful selection of planting material. And chosing big trees!
EVERY PARK NEEDS ITS ORNAMENT NATURE IS BACK IN TOWN Jaanila Country takes the surrounding nature to the very centre of this new made community. Call us romantics, but we like to believe that is worth at least a humble statue.
FELIXX LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS & PLANNERS Felixx is a Rotterdam based office for proactive landscape architecture, established to advice on the new environmental challenges. The office operates within the fields of environmental design and spatial studies. Landscapes emerged from the transformation of nature areas into human living environments. As integrated spatial systems, they connect and organize all aspects to enable human life. Constantly evolving, adapting to the ever changing contemporary life forms. Actually, we design the space where society is touching ground. Landscape architecture is both a spatial and societal instrument. Therefore Felixx enjoys being a platform to identify new spatial challenges, by exploring landscape architecture as a pragmatic utopian practice. Engineering landscapes as smart spatial systems, while envisioning them as the paradisiacal environments we want to live in. By hitting this promising overlap between pragmatism and idealism, we want to improve the world we are living in and realize happy environments. Looking for opportunities to do so is Felixx’s everyday quest.
