KITCHEN PROJECT Long,slim & elegant
VIRGINIE HAIAT CREATED A FLEXIBLE, FUNCTIONAL KITCHEN THAT DOUBLES AS A DINING AND LIVING SPACE WHERE FRIENDS AND FAMILY CAN GATHER
A long central island, cantilevered to accommodate a dining area, is the highlight of this reworked space. Units are painted in a soothing dark green, contrasted with an off-white stone worktop.

WIDE-PLANK FLOORING
Makes the space seem bigger.
THE PROBLEM An awkward layout that really didn’t maximise the room’s classic proportions.
THE SOLUTION
‘Before we renovated, there was an L-shaped counter jutting out into the middle of the room, which effectively cut it in half, and, on the other side, an uninspiring TV area. We asked interior designer Stephanie Rackind to reconsider the layout. Everything fell into place when she suggested working in the full length of the room by designing a kitchen with a long, cantilevered dining table integrated into an island running down the room. We wanted a classic Shaker style with a streamlined look, so we chose a design by Roundhouse. There’s a spacious concealed larder, a hob inset into the island and fluted glass cabinetry above the sink to soften the look. The former TV area is where the kids can play and friends can chat as we cook. The new layout makes the kitchen a natural hub.’
A bold wallpaper mural anchors this space, while two sleek armchairs provide an informal seating area for friends and family.

FOCUS ON a Multipurpose island
There are no rules to an island’s features, but it should fit well in your space
n Today’s kitchen is where we live, dine and socialise. Along with its increased importance comes growing scale, hence the arrival of the island, the central feature of many beautiful kitchens. n A multi height kitchen island with a cantilever (a rigid structural element that extends horizontally and is supported at only one end) is useful for combining food preparation with an informal dining space. With one side devoted to cooking, the other to eating, the cantilevered island defines the working zone. n An island offers storage, as well as room for sinks, bins and built-in hobs, as well as seating and wine fridges.
Floor-to-ceiling units offer plenty of storage, while reeded glass fronts soften the look. A sleek hob is inset into the island.
