BILLIE MYERS

PERSONALITIES - LOS ANGELES - MUSIC

A

fter a seven-year hiatus, Myers is back! And by back we don’t just mean figuratively by cementing her musical genius with a new album “Tea & Sympathy, but as well literally by publicly, and for the first time, breaking her silence on depression - a silence that nearly cost her life. Myers’ life is nothing short of inspirational and puts a face to so many different social, ethnic and psychological issues that are still affecting millions of people nowadays. Her courage to now openly talk about her depression and determination to not give up her artistic passion and dream epitomizes the meaning of hope and the concept of believing in yourself; not to mention the success she is enjoying as an independent artist who is admiringly embracing the DIY approach. Self-Funded and released on her own label, Fruit Loop, “Tea & Sympathy” in less than 24 hours of its online release, impressively scored a #15 spot on the iTunes Singer/songwriter chart. With “Tea & Sympathy”, Myers is breaking new ground musically. Fashioning a unique collage of sound that intertwines electronica, triphop beats, and bluesy guitars around her live acoustic/rock roots, the envelope pushing, lyrically driven, emotionally rich new CD features collaborations with such highly acclaimed songwriters as Kristen Hall (Sugarland), Peter Vale (Lemar, Beverly Knight) and Marcella Detroit (Shakespeare’s Sister, Eric Clapton). Now, as an independent artist, Myers is becoming the perfect example of how modern technology can and should be utilized to not only secure online presence and public exposure but as well how the internet offers a new distribution platform allowing indie artists to bypass the support of the major record labels. Her online fans have recently launched a Facebook PR Campaign lobbying to get Myers back on the stage of Lilith Fair! After enjoying international fame with her Universal Record Top 10 worldwide radio hit “Kiss The Rain” from her certified gold album “Growing Pains,” produced by Desmond Child (Aerosmith, Ricky Martin, Cher), then hitting rock bottom & being diagnosed with depression, Myers is finally making an admirable comeback as an indie artist who with the help of the internet’s Social Media Networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) is using her music & public image as a platform for spreading information and raising awareness about a cause and pressingly urgent issue that is close to home for the singer: Depression. Furthering her already vocal support for the LGBT community, she recently launched her Pepsi Refresh Challenge project as a spokesperson for the JED Foundation - the leading nonprofit organization addressing issues related to mental health and suicide in the college population. Myers joins other celebrities such as Pete Wentz and Mary J. Blige in JED’s ongoing fight against depression and suicide prevention. JED’s first program, ULifeline http://ulifeline.org/, launched in 2000 and has become a widely used online resource for college mental health with campus-specific information for over 1,250 schools. www.jedfoundation.org

As a woman diagnosed with depression (who survived a suicide attempt thanks to the help of her friends), Myers is localizing her efforts more specifically on the LGBT community, encouraging everyone — gay, straight, transgender, lesbian, bisexual — to get informed about and involved with the JED Foundation to fight depression. With the Pepsi Refresh challenger, Myers is determined to educate people about what depression is, how to recognize the warning signs, how to overcome it, shed light on how to help people suffering from depression - and overall, promote suicide prevention among young people. Statics show that Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in the US with 31,204 deaths recorded in 1995. This approximates to around one death every seventeen minutes. There are more suicides than homicides each year in the US. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimated that “as many as 30% of completed youth suicides each year” are performed by gays and lesbians. Suicide risk is higher among homosexual youths not because of their inability to accept their sexual orientation but because of the risks attached to it and the lack of support. “Better off dead than gay” is the general sentiment directly connected to the fact that more often than not they are bullied, discriminated against, and because they are not accepted and don’t find a way of life for their homosexuality in society. These past few months have seen the lost of some high-profile figures to suicide, and we believe that the way the media cover these stories can potentially have a positive or negative impact on young people. When sensationalized, coverage of suicide can potentially have a negative impact on a young person already struggling emotionally and/or contemplating suicide. But we can also use these tragedies as a moment to talk about suicide in a productive way – to help people understand it better, learn the warning signs and think about what they can do to protect himself or herself or a friend. Not only does music have the power to captivate us, it has the ability to shape our beliefs and enact social change. Musicians are no strangers to playing concerts and galas on behalf of charities around the world in an effort to raise social awareness. In a world connected by technology like never before, music can have an even greater impact on social awareness. While major musicians have always had the ability to reach millions to help raise public awareness for their causes, the rise of the Internet enables anybody to voice their concerns on issues they support. And that is exactly what Billie Myers is doing - as Margaret Mead wrote: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

KATHY WOLFE

PERSONALITIES - SAN FRANCISCO - MEDIA

K

athy Wolfe and Wolfe Video celebrate 25 years in business as the oldest and largest exclusive distributor of LGBT movies.

To those who know her, Kathy Wolfe is an anachronism: a successful business woman, as comfortable with 21st Century DVD technology as she is among the artifacts of the Historic West that are her passion. Kathy Wolfe is also a woman with a vision -- the earliest expression of which was a childhood fascination with her mother’s 8mm movie camera, landing her the role of Wolfe Family documentarian. These early experiences behind the camera fed Kathy’s growing enthusiasm and aptitude for the visual arts. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in art and spent eight years teaching art at the college level. Kathy and Bill Plate founded Arrow Graphics, a specialty graphics services company, in 1970. As Executive Vice President and Co-owner, Kathy expanded Arrow Graphics to thirteen offices, employing 150 workers in five states. In 1981, intrigued by the availability of public access television programming, Kathy produced and directed a twelve-part video series; Fix it Now, featuring women contractors demonstrating the basics of home repair. She honed her skill as a videographer, chronicling events of social and political interest (among them, the 1986 California NOW Conference) while producing and directing documentaries on a broad range of topics of interest to

12 www.femalefyimag.com

women. Wolfe Video began in 1985 as a small mail order distribution outlet for these and other independent video products. Kathy recognized a largely untapped audience of lesbians and gay men eager for films that spoke to their own lives. Wolfe Video now enjoys a strong presence in the marketplace as the most successful distributor of independent, studio-produced and “self-authored” gay and lesbian-themed video and DVD products. Wolfe Video is a strong, socially responsible and commercially successful business with headquarters in San Jose that reflects Kathy’s belief that the value of a company lies not in its “bottom line,” but in the extent to which all of its practices, activities and relationships affirm and enhance the quality of life for its workers, customers, investors, suppliers and the community at large. As an agent for social change, Wolfe Video makes visible the lives of an entire subculture that has, until recently, been largely invisible in film and other mainstream media. As a financially successful enterprise, it demonstrates to film studios, television programmers and others the presence and viability of the lesbian and gay audience as consumers of their products. Outside of her work in the film and video arena, Kathy is an avid restorer of historic buildings; an adventurous traveler; and a collector of almost everything.

PERSONALITIES - LA /NYC - ICONIC SUPERMODEL - ACTRESS & MEDIA PERSONALITY

M

ore than a decade after stepping in front of the camera lens, Jenny Shimizu – the iconic supermodel, actress and media personality – has continued to transcend convention.

Born in San Jose, California in June 1967, Jenny grew up in Santa Maria, California and attended California State University, Northridge on a basketball scholarship. She later moved to Los Angeles to open a car garage. Soon after, Jenny was approached by a casting director while saddling her motorcycle outside an L.A. nightclub and introduced to Calvin and Kelly Klein. The designers were looking for a singular, androgynous face to represent their new fragrance, CK One. She landed her first fashion show for Calvin Klein at the Hollywood Bowl, followed by the pioneering black and white ad campaign. After came Banana Republic’s “American Beauty” campaign by Bruce Weber, which cast Jenny front and center on a Times Square billboard. From there, Jenny worked for such designers as Versace, Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Yohji Yamamoto, and was featured in beauty campaigns for Clinique and Shiseido. Throughout the 90’s Jenny appeared in magazine editorials for Italian Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, Allure, Elle, Marie Clare, Italian Glamour, French Glamour and the cover of Australian Vogue. Jenny has shot with fashion’s most celebrated photographers including Richard Avedon, Bruce Weber, Irving Penn, and David Sims – just to name a few. Her image continues to be exhibited in museums, and in books, all over the world. In 1993 Jenny appeared in a cameo in Madonna’s music video “Rain” (1993). Then

14 www.femalefyimag.com

came Foxfire (1996), Jenny’s first feature film and leading role. Jenny’s television roles include a special appearance on the “coming-out” episode of Ellen (1997) and playing Elena on Here Television’s Dante’s Cove (2007). Since 2005, Jenny has been celebrated for her unique beauty in E Television’s Sexiest Top Models (2005) and UK Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Sex Symbols (2007). Making a critically acclaimed shift into reality television, Jenny appeared on “America’s Next Top Model,” (2005), Logo Television’s Curl Girls (2007), and as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race (2009). Jenny is currently a series regular judge, with fellow supermodel Tyson Beckford, on Bravo’s Make Me a Supermodel (2009). Jenny’s recent film work includes the award-winning feature film, Itty Bitty Titty Committee (2007) directed by Jamie Babbitt; two short films, Four Steps (2009) and Tools 4 Fools (2009); and the feature film, Bob’s New Suit (2009) debuting later this year. To date, Jenny has been honored as one of the 10 Most Amazing Women in Show Business by Power Up, one of A Magazine’s “100 Most Influential Asian Americans of the Decade 1989-1999,” and as a the recipient of the “Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 2006 Lesbian Icon Award.” When she’s not acting or modeling, Jenny can be found restoring Bentleys, Rolls Royces and Cadillacs from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. She is also an avid motorcycle rider with a love for Ducatis. In addition, she recently launched the Jenny Shimiuz MERCH line.

ABOUT JENNY SHIMIZU MERCH: Jenny Shimizu’s MERCH line speaks to her unparalleled standpoint, personifies her rebellious attitude and pays tribute to the illustrious 1990’s. The debut collection of unisex shirts encompasses personal stories, iconic images and signature details, carefully selected for their authentic “Jenny Shimizu” qualities.

I AM LINDA EVANGELISTA:

CRUSIN FOR A BRUISIN: Born with the obsession for “anything with a motor,” Jenny began riding motorcycles at the age of 6. Growing up, her father always told her she lived life as if she was “Cruisin for A Bruisin.” 36 years later, with 2 accidents a leg broken in 17 places behind her (later commemorated by a C.f.A.B. tattoo on her arm), Jenny continues to be an avid motorcyclist. Cruisin features a picture of Jenny for British Elle, shot by legendary photographer Michael Thompson. In the picture Jenny rides her Harley down the cobblestone streets of the West Village, dressed in her classic jeans and t-shirt look, complete with a broken foot, from none other than crashing her bike. Back says, “CRUISIN FOR A BRUISIN.”

2 weeks after being signed, Jenny—the 5’7”, tattooed Japanese-butch-lesbianmechanic- turned-model got a job for Allure Magazine. She arrived at the studio and saw 5 white tents in a row. As Jenny made her way towards tent #5 she saw Christy Turlington, followed by Kristen McNemany and then Naomi Campbell inside tents 1-3! Scared shitless, she skipped tent #4 and went into panic mode. Suddenly, from tent #4 she heard a soft voice. “I am.” “I am Linda.” Then voice got louder and more powerful, “I AM LINDA EVANGELISTA!” Jenny got up and peeked through the tent walls. There sat Linda Evangelista, staring at herself in the mirror, chanting repeatedly. Completely taken aback, Jenny turned to her own mirror and began repeating, “I am Linda Evangelista.” From that moment on, those 4 words have become Jenny’s mantra whenever she feels highly stressed or sickeningly frightened.

BEAUTY SPOTLIGHT

And now for the world’s first summer sunset perfume, Inspired by Andy Warhol’s fantasy Montauk -where a quirkily quaint little fishing village greets the Studio 54 crowd. (Trust us, this fragrance is like no other.)

T

hese days, beaches inspire nothing short of reverence. We savor as never before their bracing aquatic air, their pristine sand dunes and crashing ocean waves. But back in the hedonistic 1970s and ‘80s, Andy Warhol had a very different take on Montauk -- his getaway retreat from downtown New York. “A little town on the end of Long Island,” is how he described Montauk, adding, “The next stop is Lisbon, Portugal.” Even so, this drowsy, endof-the-line saltwater fishing haven was soon made world-famous by Warhol and his entourage as a Studio 54 by the sea. What’s more, it served as a secluded vantage point for the artist to observe “his” socialites and celebrities at play -- their number including Jackie O, John Lennon, Salvador Dali, and the Rolling Stones. “Montauk in extremis” is the subject of the fifth in Bond No. 9’s series of Warhol collectible eaux de parfum. Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Montauk, an androgynous male-female summer perfume, takes a new approach to the genre of beach scent: it riffs on the duality of country/city, rural/urban. Not your usual summer vacation fragrance, Bond No. 9 was inspired by Warhol’s forays to Long Island’s farthest reach. Warhol descends on the East End On the lookout in 1971 for a seaside retreat, Warhol rejected the stately Hamptons, preferring what’s been described as the more populist Polynesian-Tudor-Motel-6 design sensibility in Montauk. Along its windswept cliffs, he came upon and purchased a secluded 1931 twenty-acre estate, perfect for entertaining. Its name was Eothen (Ancient Greek for “at first light”), and its five blue-shingled clapboard houses -- “between the ocean and the swamps,” as he put it -- soon became a magnet for the jet set. (After Warhol’s death in 1987, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts donated 15 acres of the estate to the Nature Conservancy, which created the Andy Warhol Preserve in 1992.) The scent The fragrance captures the improbable descent of disco-mania on an unassuming fishing village and nearby woodlands. (Imagine a windswept Montauk sunset hinting at the steamy, sexy nighttime to come.) In this twilight zone, the fresh and tangy initial flavors of blueberry and wild bergamot give way, first to sultry, sexy hyacinth, lily of the valley and honeysuckle, then to rich, clean forest-by-the-sea aromas -- silver maple, red oak, driftwood, and amber. What we have here is a cunning interplay of rustic and urban. The bottle Depicting Andy Warhol Montauk as the world’s first twilight beach scent, the bottle’s surface design displays Warhol’s iconic Sunsets, dating from 1972 -- one

16 www.femalefyimag.com

year after the artist discovered Montauk. His Sunsets series consists of 632 unique screen prints of a highly stylized, abstracted sunset -- each print displaying subtle variations and permutations in its bands of stunning, vibrating colors. As Warhol once said, “The idea of waiting for something makes it more exciting.” So taken were they at Bond No. 9 with Warhol’s Sunsets that the company chose four of them, to display in pairs on the front and back of two bottles -- giving customers a choice when buying this scent. One option features a chrome yellow and a gentle blue sun disc, centered between misty shades of pink and blue. The other bottle depicts two versions of a washed-out, corona-ed blue sun, surrounded by deeper, stormier, otherworldly pinks and blues. Kicking off summer 2010, Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Montauk makes its timely arrival on June 1st. About The Andy Warhol Foundation As the preeminent American artist of the 20th century, Andy Warhol challenged the world to see art differently. CABLE BEACH, BROOME

RALIA The New Wild West

BY CAROLE DIXON

L

ooking for something completely different this summer? Broome could be just the ticket.

As I climbed on top of a large, lumbering camel, I could have been in the Sahara desert with the blazing sun and hot sand afoot, but as I looked out at the pinkish-brown streaks in the mountains - layered almost like a grand cake, I thought of Sedona, Arizona and the famous, Zen aura of the red rocks. The lapping cobalt waves and earthy Indian Ocean breeze felt more like a tropical secluded island off the coast of Tanzania, maybe Zanzibar. My diverse location was actually the Northwestern region of Australia in The Kimberley, just a short mile from a few top resorts, restaurants and shops. OK, before you start to say, ‘it’s too far,’ there is good news. Direct flights into Broome are available on Qantas from Sydney and Melbourne that will take you about 5 hours. So, you can start your trip in one of these top culinary-cultured cities, and then take a side trip for something a little more off the beaten path and exotic. This is also a wonderful option for those of you who have traveled to Australia before, love the country and want to see more of what the outback has to offer a well-traveled tourist. While you will be immersed in rugged, yet elegant natural surroundings, you will also be able to enjoy world-class spas, dining, and shop for some of the best pearls on the planet. If camel trekking is not your past time of choice, you can take a speed boat through horizontal waterfalls and then dine on a catamaran as you coast Talbot Bay before you head back in jet seaplane over Cape Leveque. The craggy, deep emerald green coastline looks inhabited by only the odd alligator. Oh, and then there is the pearl farms – Broome is an 1880’s Pearling Port. Take a tour of Willie Creek for a little research as this is the only working pearl farm open to the public. The landscape and natural resources naturally draws a very eclectic, artsy type of community, so the tiny downtown area is filled with art galleries, cafes and most

30 www.femalefyimag.com

importantly, pearl artisans. If you have always wanted a significant black pearl, or even a perfectly shaped white gem, this is the place to nab one or two. The selection here seemed more abundant than in all the Tahitian islands. The hot new $33 million, 5-star resort to stay at is modern Pinctada at Cable Beach – and they were just accepted into the prestigious Virtuoso Hotels & Resorts Program. Pamper yourself after a hectic day exploring and shopping at their new LI’TYA concept spa, featuring Aboriginal Dreamtime, based on Australian native botanicals and tapping into 40,000 years of indigenous plant wisdom and holistic healing to rejuvenate the spirit, so, you don’t want to miss this experience. The indoor-outdoor restaurant menu was designed by award-winning Chef Greg Malouf of MoMo restaurant in Melbourne, so guests can dine on his middle-eastern style mezza fare under the stars or at Selene Brasserie. Another special spot in this region is Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat – about a one hour drive south of Broome which you can also reach by boat. This resort is similar to being on a beach safari in a luxury tented camp- except with infinity pools and panoramic views from Jack’s Bar with upscale cuisine. The property will arrange bush walks by aboriginal guides where you can explore caves, that is if you can stop staring at the formations of pindan (red earth) on the cliffs overlooking the beach which seem to change colors and formations depending on the time of day. As you watch the sunset, and the sky fades to black, look for the staircase to the moon. This phenomenon only happens from March to October and is caused by a rising full moon reflecting off the mudflats at a very low tide – giving the illusion of stairs that you could climb to the moon. And, in this part of the world, you might feel that even this miracle of modern nature is truly possible.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Chef Jaime Lauren

J

BY MARGARET SAUNDERS

amie Lauren’s interest in the culinary arts started at a relatively young age, when she spent evenings in the kitchen cooking with her parents, although at the time she had no idea of becoming a chef. From these humble beginnings mixing meatloaf and frying chicken cutlets in Manhattan, she rose to become one of San Francisco Chronicle’s “Rising-Star Chefs” in 2005.

Lauren lives in San Francisco and, when not at Absinthe, enjoys dining out with friends all around the Bay Area.

As an honors graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Lauren has had the opportunity to work with many celebrity chefs in the past, including: Anita Lo of Annisa, New York City; Lance Dean Valesquez of Bendean in San Francisco; and Jean-Michel Bouvier, from L’Essential, Chambéery, France. She credits all these chefs for teaching her how to meld exotic flavors and ingredients. Growing up in New York City, Lauren’s affinity for bright and flavorful cuisine originated with family dinners at some of Manhattan’s best neighborhood restaurants. She held this particular type of food in high regard and at Absinthe Lauren is finally able to recreate it with fresh local ingredients in a way she’s been dreaming of since she started cooking professionally. Assuming the Executive Chef position at Absinthe in July 2007 was a natural progression in Lauren’s culinary career. Best described as American-influenced French and Northern Italian, Absinthe’s menu echoes Lauren’s commitment to organic, locally grown, seasonal ingredients. Her menu highlights a number of unique dishes that are elevated by her cultured background and grounded in her dedication to making each dish memorable. She explains that her cuisine “looks good and tastes good, but it’s not so refined that you find yourself afraid to touch it. It’s accessible, meaning people are excited to try the dishes on the menu. And a lot of love goes into each dish.” Lauren has received both local and national praise for elevating the cuisine at Absinthe including being named as Restaurant Hospitality’s “Rising Star Chef 2008” and selected as the sole Bay Area “Cheftestant” on season 5 of Bravo’s award-winning show “Top Chef” which aired in 2009.

EDITOR’S NOTE Retina Display

Multitasking

People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With the tap of a button, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at your stories — iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.

Thanks to the Retina display, everything you see and do on iPhone 4 looks amazing. Text in books, web pages, and email is crisp at any size. Images in movies and photos are stunning at almost any angle. That’s because the Retina display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.

Now you can run your favorite third-party apps — and switch between them instantly — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.* This smarter approach to multitasking is available only on iPhone.

Because your iPhone goes with you everywhere, you’re always ready to capture every moment. And with iPhone 4, you can do it in stunning high definition. Its advanced backside illumination sensor delivers great-looking video in both bright and low-light settings. And in dark environments, you can brighten the scene with the built-in LED light.

Take beautiful, detailed photos with the new 5-megapixel camera with built-in LED flash. The advanced backside illumination sensor captures great pictures even in low light. And the new front-facing camera makes it easy to take self-portraits.

Thanks to the App Store, you can choose from over 200,000 apps and games. But these apps can fill your Home screens pretty quickly. That’s where the new Folders feature comes in. It gives you an easy way to keep your apps organized and declutter your Home screens. And you can launch your favorite apps with a couple of taps.
