Veterans Trauma Recovery Center Term: Fall 2016 Critic: Leong-Leong Studio Partner: Cathy Yin Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects 1 in 7 U.S. soldiers, which equates to a staggering total of 300,000 military servicemen. Despite the proliferation of known cases of PTSD, 2 out of 3 soldiers never seek medical treatment out of fear and embarrassment. Consequently, common symptoms such as anxiety and depression trigger numerous socioeconomic and health problems, such as homelessness, alcohol abuse, and drug addiction. Even though all Veteran Affairs (VA) medical centers offer PTSD treatment, there are only 22 institutions in the country that provide residential rehabilitation programs. All of these residential rehab programs are part of larger medical campuses in urban settings. Stimuli that trigger PTSD can easily be found in such institutional settings, making the patients mentally vulnerable in an environment that decreases the effectiveness of their treatments. This project explores how architecture can act as an extension of the natural environment and through spatial arrangement, create an experience that enhances the recovery process for the patients. The collective experience allows the patients to be constantly exposed to other individuals who reside in the building and develop trust in others that share similar traumatic experiences. Through daily activities and interactions with therapists and other veterans, the patients will learn to face their fears without feeling ashamed or belittled, which is conducive to healing in an effective manner.

“Black Rock Revisit - CBS Building Term: Fall 2016 Critic: Ziad Jamaleddine Partner: Sunaina Shah Since the very beginning of TV broadcasting era, the big three network: ABC, CBS and NBC stations had been the primary source of entertainment for the American people. Their dominance had remained unchallenged for years until the introduction of internet. The whole media landscape changed because of the instant availability of information nowadays; yet, the CBS building, which was build with the idea of a black rock, the symbolization of CBS organization has remain unchanged. Unlike current media landscape which is openly editable by the general public, where everyone can be a citizen journalist. The lobby of the building is only accessible to authorized personnels, making it impossible for the organization to improve to engage with the world outside of its trapped envelope. If CBS were to rethink its approach in embracing the change in media and transform itself as an urban actor by taking an educational approach, how would this building which is emblematic of journalism in the 60s begin to change? This project attempts to reconfigure the main lobby of CBS building by removing part of its envelope, allows the information to transfer between CBS organization and the general public.

- Ground Floor Plan The ground floor level was modified based on accentuating Eero Saarinens sunken plaza idea, to create multi ple sunken discussion platform for people to debate about current news. The plaza also act as circulation around the building, allow the general public to observe or partici pate in any topics they are interested in.
- 2nd Floor Plan / Upload Floor This is the lounge level where the public can upload / voice their opinions with a relaxed environment. - 3rd Floor Plan / Download Floor A level that allows more serious discussion / collaboration between CBS employees and citizen journalists.
- Interior Renderings 01. An interactive map of Manhattan that uploads live time witnesses around the city to create dialogue. 02. Transformable office space that can turn into coworking space / exhibition space.
Conjoined Micro Housing Term: Spring 2011 Critic: Darin Johnstone
The site is located in mid-town Los Angeles, between the 20th street onramp on the westbound 10 freeway and Magnolia Ave. The space on this lot is very limited due to its orientation along the freeway and the community adjacent to it which hinders the development on this lot. Nevertheless, there is a lot of potential on this lot because of its limitation, criteria such as noise level, pollution level, zoing requirments allow the project to develop into a unique project that can successfully accomodate multiple families and introduce younger people to move into this neighborhood. A proposal of combining the microhousing and skip floors typology lifted the living spaces up, reducing ground level footprints while providing spacious residence above. Micro-housing also creates a continuity to the multi-family community adjoing the site, allows it to blend in smoothly with the community without being extravargant.
- Volume Mani pulation Strategy In order to give unique identity to each household, these similar units are first being conjoined and rotated so that different views can be seen from each unit and residents will be able to receive different amount of sunlight due to its orientation. The volume also changes according to the size of the household. Even though all the units ultimately look different, they were all constructed by a method with aluminum panels finish on top of the steel frame structre to wrap around the tubular volumes.

- Typical Unit Assembly Each unit is constructed in similar manner that allows easier construction procedure and material management. Solar ivy PV are installed on the back of the building facing the freeway to create renewable energy.
- Structural Model Physical model was build in order to study the feasibility of the structural system, the assembly between interior walls and exterior claddin and the transition between two residential units.

- 3d Printed Physical Model Interchangable facades were printed to test the light condition at the entry stair as desired by the client. Specific locking system was designed in Rhino to allow us to switch parts.
- 3d Printed Physical Model Removable / Interchangable parts were printed to create this model in order to present the design to the client. This flexibility allows us to print new parts if we want to test new design.
