ABOUT ME Ink-wash paintings use only black inks, but in various stroke weights in order to capture the depth and atomsphere of scenery. In that regard, I believe the most successful architecture should be able to negotiate with the world through simplicity of form and space, while carrying deep and complex information within. My educational background provided an interesting starting point for me to study architecture. Coming from Hong Kong, the intense educational system gave me an opportunity to expand my knowledge base to various fields, from conventional studies like literature, science and geography to even controversal topics such as religion. It is this educational system that makes me know a little bit of everything without being proficient at anything. My parents thankfully brought me to the United States and allow me to utilize my educational background while simultaneously improving it. This is the reason why i chose architecture as my major. As an architect, I must acquire knowledge of everything, from structure to facade, programs to site, codes to topography and most importantly, the user experiences within my architecture design. This ever-growing learning enviroment of architecture will only make me better as a student, a designer and a person.

MULTI-MODULE SLIDER HOUSE

SPRING 2015

Mul -module slider house is the very first conceptual design for SCI-Arc/Caltech Solar Decathlon compe on entry in 2013. This studio focuses on researches of materials, building methods and sustainable design that will enable the Solar Decathlon team to come up with a design that enhances California lifestyle while crea ng a dwelling that is both cost effec ve and energy efficient. The proposed design resulted in a residence that operates differently depends on the configura on of the separate modules. The dwelling runs on a track that allows the modules to move away from each other, revealing new spaces such as deck, playground or green space while gaining extra square footage for the user. This way, the user can experience both privacy and openess with a touch of a bu on.

CROSS SECTION & BUILDING DETAIL The ease of transpotation was a major factor in this building’s design. Thus, light-weight materials are being used such as aluminum tubing, metal sheets for facade and steel structure for its rigidity and flexibility. Thin-film photovoltaic are implemented on the facade in order to avoid the use of bulky solar panels for enery saving purposes.

The final design known as DALE, eliminated one of the modules in order to keep the budget low, however, the transitiion and the correlation of indoor and outdoor space are still well-presented with the help of the motorized track as well as space-saving modular furniture pieces and cabinets which were custom-made.

A proposal of combining the microhousing and skip floors typology li ed the living spaces up, reducing ground level footprints yet providing spacious residence above. Micro-housing also creates a con nuity to the mul -family community adjoing the site, allows it to blend in smoothly with the community without being extravargant.

TIPTON TERRACE

The site is located in Los Angeles, between the 20th street onramp to the westbound 10 freeway and Magnolia Ave. Space is limited due to its orienta on along the freeway and the community adjacent to it which hinders the development on this lot.

Team: Leroy Tung, Cathy Yin Instructor: Volkan Alkanoglu Las Vegas, being known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, is unfortunately located in a desert. The temperature is torturous and residences tend to stay inside because of the climate. This community is lacking a public space that they can be proud of or to hang out yet not being expose to the sun.

An idea of a green house+library is proposed in order to create that public space for the people who work, live or study around the community while also act as a catalyst for future growth in the area.

TIPTON TERRACE

The site, situated on the intersec on between South Durango Dr and West Russell Road was introduced. The neighborhood is developing with the addi on of freeways and growing popula on in the area. However, townhomes and vacant lots are s ll the primary typologies around the site which confined the people within their own homes.

The sparwl of Los Angeles had been expanding its boundary well beyond it pre-exist border; the city started to decentralize as it grows further away from downtown. High rise buildings and unique architectural pieces appear within downtown consistently; a discrete figure-ground condi on was created by this urban sparwl.

The site is the exis ng landmark of Union Sta on. Proposed design emerged from studying the figure-ground condi on of Los Angeles, allowing the design to blend itself with the city scape while providing a new transpota on hub for the upcoming high speed rails.

TIPTON TERRACE

A city structure and order should not be destroy solely because of the one dimensional design process. The growth of a city and an architectural piece should find its harmony and a reasonable popor on with its surrondings. The differen a on between the deisgn and city thus will be erase and a con nua on of the figural space will be achieve.
