L AG UN ATOR I A G R I C U LT U R E WAT E R B O R N E P O D S Lagunatori is an architectural research project to create a self-sustaining waterborne community for food production, research, and living. It is driven by the growing concern of population increase, decreasing land area for living, working, and producing food. Inspired by the old venetian lagoon, which sustainably cultivates sea resources though series of canals that traps its fishes. This facility translates these horizontal cultivation into vertical system, that are sustainable not only in environmental aspect, but also technological (integrated systems), economical (self-powered), cultural (tradition), spatial (space effective), and social (encouraging social activity).

forms and order, connecting and interlocking the three distinct zones into harmonious single design entity. Anamorphosis, as the name implies, allows a single object to transform into a different object when appraised from different viewing angle. This is translated into a design process where the store can be transformed from luxury retail gallery into a fashion runway, or an event venue. This is where the le ventre stage, as the vesica piscis of the space functioning anamorphically, and efficiently. it would become a stage for auctions, product launching platforms, fashion shows, or just an otherworldy, unique and new look for a grand entrance for the customers.

DESIGN BRIEF Being an enthusiast of art and sculpture, the client wished to establish a small gallery in the historical district of Tanjong Pagar in singapore. Decided to distinguish the gallery from local competitors, the project is to conserve its cultural heritage and historical value in as many dimension as possible, while providing new and refreshing insight in gallery interior design in Singapore. This project, aims to create a small scale art gallery that displays chinese literacy art and caligraphy with an integrated cafe, which serves a contemporary interpretration of the traditional street food and snacks in the district. In addition, the site, which has been altered by its previous tenant, has shown significant modification which has strayed far from its original, heritage features. Thereefore, this project also seeks to restore as many of the shophouses heritage features as possible, while implementing new and modern contemporary design features to deliver the contrasting experience between the past and present.

THE CAFE GALLERY The overall interior quality shown in these persectives are a depiction of the growth and connection between the past and the present time of the district of Tanjong Pagar. Materials and design elements were chosen to represent certain period of the district. The fish net for instance, shows that the district was once a fishing village; the oriental decors shows the influence of the Chinese over the decade in the district. Finally, the present time is shown and represented by the contemporary and modern look that fused seamlessly into the timeline.
Dr John Crawfurd, second Resident of Singapore noted the presence of the Orang Laut or “Sea Nomads” who were fishermen on a visit to Tanjong Pagar in 1822. Originally called Slintar (Selintar), it was a mere fishing village when first identified. In the 1830s, Tanjong Pagar had been an extensive nutmeg plantation with other fruit plantations dotting the land. Its estates were named after various European plantation owners such as Duxton, Spottiswoode, Everton, Raeburn and Guthrie. The later’s 12.555 ha (31 acre) nutmeg plantation was called “Guthrie’s Village”. In 1859, Captain William Cloughton built the first dry dock, “No. 1 Dock”. With the advent of steamships in early 1860s and the consequent growth of shipping, wharves were built by the privately owned Tanjong Pagar Dock Company. Tanjong Pagar Road became one of the main thoroughfares for the transportation of goods between the docks and godowns along Singapore River. The development of the “New Harbour” was a major impetus to the economic growth of Tanjong Pagar. In 1905, the government bought over the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company and formed the Tanjong Pagar Dock Board. The
24 | ID PORTFOLIO
operation was taken over by the Singapore Harbour Board in 1912 which gave a major face-lift to the harbour replacing the old wooden wharves with concrete ones and adding the best technology of the day to improve port operations. The Jinriksha Station (1903) and the Singapore Railway Station (1935) were located at Tanjong Pagar. In the 1955 elections, Lee Kuan Yew of the People’s Action Party won the Tanjong Pagar constituency in a 3 cornered fight, securing the largest number of votes for a single candidate in that elections. The first PAP branch was set up in Tanjong Pagar in June 1955 and was headquartered there between 1955-1957. In 1964, the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) replaced the Harbour Board to better manage and upgrade the Port. Singapore’s first Container Terminal at Tanjong Pagar was completed in 1972. For many years the Port of Singapore has been known as the world’s busiest port.

Inspired by the amphitheatre, the project seeks to gather residents through entertainment venues, as such in the past. Through case studies and research, it is found that this trend persist until today in the form of open-air cinemas which is prominent not only in most asian, but also many countries around the world. DESIGN BRIEF The objective of our design is to create versatile spaces where people would gather and do various leisure activities. Therefore, the concept that we came up with to design the public spaces in HDB estates is ‘Catalyst’ - known as a substance that increase the rate of a chemical reaction. This definition is translated into design process which allows catalyst to be attached to the neglected facilities, combining them and reactivating their function as social spaces by piquing people’s interest through aesthetic element and fun activities.

THE FLOWER SEATING The connector area of the amphitheatre acts as a connecting-common spaces between the facilities of the HDB’s public spaces. As the name implies, this spaces connects to the existing, underutilised hdb places, therefore uniting them into a whole, increasing the potential of the facilities to be reused and re-integrated as it primary functions, while adding-on new functions as it is joined. One of such area are the flower seating, whereby it caters for the people who are seeking to get a rest from afternoon jogging, or perhaps commuter that
are seeking to enjoy the view in their way home. it provides intervention of the users, to interact, and to be introduced to its surrounding - coming in and out of the amphitheatre is not so obvious too, as it provides a transitional spaces. Another prominent connector area is the dome, its playful and familiar shapes can be and connected to any types of playground or play areas, providing shelter and space for all age demography, appealing it self not only to specific, but people of all age and backgrounds.

The scheme is to separate the library macro zones into two separate entities: the formal library, the fifth floor, and the more playful library on the fourth floor. Then the space is segregated again based on the activeness of the space and the noise level. This resulted in a three major zones that seems separate, however, connected by a common circulation that joins and connected to a single ‘nexus’ a design unity that prominent in the library.

THE ORGANIC TABLE the organic table, is catered for casual library located at fourth floor, its intent is to create a playful space and media for reading, browsing, or studying under light noise level. The catered ‘stock’ in the area is more casual, although it covers categories such as science, design, architecture and other considerably serious discipline, it is meant to be read by general public. thus, the media used are more casual, lightweight, magazines, etc. users might even use their laptop for doing light works, having ‘quiet discussion’ etc.

G UILT Y P L E ASURE P R I S O N R E S TA U R A N T Guilty Pleasure is a restaurant design project that seeks to reduce food wastages that caused from many unsustainable food procceses and cycles by implementing architecture and sustainable design processes into the system. This is achieved by implementing mixed-development design process by combining a public restaurant, and a pre-release centre, into the prison systems. It would become a platform for restaurant, retail, pre-release centre, and modern farm, whereas each of the ma jor spaces would co-exist and form a sustainable cycle.

DESIGN BRIEF
sustainable food cycle
Guilty Pleasure project is an integrated restaurnat design which is classified into four ma jor spaces: restaurant, farm, retial, and a pre-release centre. This mix-development venue is a protoype restaurant which is functioning as an ‘add-on’ to a prison complex, in which inmates with good behaviour could get a pre-release period, for training and social rehabilitation for re-integration to the public. This restaurant serves contemporary european cuisine in asian style ala-carte menu. It occupies 3125 sqm which is divided into block A (1900 sqm) and
block C (1225 sqm). The restaurant serves breakfast in its cafe with 72 seating capacity, as well as lunch and dinner service with seating capacity of 400 seats (285 first floor, 115 second floor). Furthermore, the restaurant will have its own modern farms, as well as workshop, to produce its own self-sustainable products. The produces from the workshops and farms will be sold in the retail, and eventually used in the restaurant, before finally recycled and used for the farm, creating sustainable food cycle within the self-contained complex.

TO SUBTRACT TO GAIN
SPATIAL ZONING
The design concept of the restaurant is an eulogy from the design problems, users, site, and solutions. The project is dealing with reductions, declines, wasting, and withering of food cycles, due to many unsustainable process. It also deals with collapsing, and crumbling of social acceptance of the inmates, often branded as evil and disregarded for a chance to change. The site is as well, seems to be in a crumbling and decaying state. The characteristic is seemingly similar upon each of every dimensions stated above, a negativity, often interpreted as a reductions.
However, the solutions to these problems, is actually, to reduce, or to subtract. To be sustainable, the food cycle needs to reduce its distance between production and consumption, reducing the dependencies of transports. Social barrier needs to be subtracted for the inmates in order to achieve recidivism and acceptance. Therefore, the design language which is used universally - aesthetically, spatially, and structurally within the project, is Subtraction: emphasizing on subtractive elements to gain its antithesis.

D DOUBLE EXPOSURE
DOUB L E E X P OS URE DOU B L E X CONDOM I NI UM Double exposure condominium is a project specifically designed for the Design Interventions’ Young Designer Award 2016. It is a residential project proposed for a hypothetical client, with family of four. The design challenge posed by the brief is to design the interior to appeal to two distinct age groups: middle-aged couples, and a kids of 4 and 6 years old. Inspired by the photographic technique, the designer translated the same process into a design thoughts in uorder to create a balance between relaxing-homey feels with active-creative spaces to provide relaxing experience for the adults, and creative-learning stimulations for the juniors.

DESIGN BRIEF The concept proposed for the family’s apartment is raising the bar for the balance between playfulness of the space and the comfort. As the brief stated, users of the space will be middle aged couple with 2 kids. The concept - ‘double exposure’ translates the technique of photography into interior design principle, creating an illusion of exterior into interior. This concept will be able to create balance between relaxing and comfortable home as a retreat for the working couple, whilst creating a unique playground and stimulate creative experiences that benefit the growth of their kids.

As the concept stated, the idea of integrating exterior into interior goes with a specific set of mood boards and inspirations, each areas of the interior follows a specific exterior locations such as: hill landscapes, cities skylines, canyons, or even playgrounds and backyards. Not only this concept appeals to the aesthetic of the space, but also it provides a new options for storage, and new way to interact with furnitures. The condominium will be equipped with playful custom furnitures that allows extended user interactions, beyond its normal functions. for instance, the kids bed, not only it is used for sleeping, but also functions as a playground for the kids to play and study.
