I.SITE PLAN: WOOD STREET, CARDIFF
TO CARDIFF CASTLE
MILLENIUM STADIUM
VUE CINEMA BUS STATION
CARDIFF CENTRAL RAIL
RIVER TAF
AS A GROUP WE SAW THE SITE AS ONE OF HUGE OPPORTUNITY. SITUATED BETWEEN THE MILLENIUM STADIUM, ALL THE MAIN TRANSPORT LINKS AND THE RIVER TAF, IT OCCUPIES A KEY LOCATION IN CARDIFF.
INITIAL CONCEPT DIAGRAM

WE QUICKLY RECONGNISED THAT THE MOST AESTHETICALLY PLEASING PART OF THE SITE WAS THAT WHICH LAY IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE RIVER TAF.
II.SCHEMATIC IDEAS: ACCESS TO WATER

THE DECISION WAS MADE TO FLOOD THE SITE, GIVING ALL OF OUR RESIDENTS ACCESS TO AND VIEWS OF THE WATER, WHILST CREATING A NEW HARBOUR IN THE CENTRE OF CARDIFF.
TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF STAGNANT WATER, A CHANNEL WAS INTRODUCED TO FLUSH THE HARBOUR THROUGH.

IN RESPONSE TO THE VERY ‘MAN-MADE’ BUILDINGS IN THE SURROUNDING AREA, THE CONTOUR-LIKE BANDING PROPOSES A NEW TYPE OF URBAN LANDSCAPE..
II.SCHEMATIC IDEAS: HORIZONTAL BANDING

EACH BAND EQUATES TO AN ASPECT OF THE BRIEF AND FOLLOW THE LINES OF THE SITE FRAMING THE WATER.
THE PLAN FOR THE SCHEME IS, EFFECTIVELY SHOWN BELOW, A CLEAR RESPONSE TO THE SITE. A GRID IS THEN LAID ONTOP TO PRODUSE THE GRAIN OF THE UNITS.

II.SCHEMATIC IDEAS: TERRACING
10
MY GROUP - ‘SOLAR 5’ - WERE GIVEN THE CHALLENGE OF MAXIMISING SOLAR EXPOSURE. I INTERPRETED THIS AS MAXIMISING THE AMOUNT OF NATURAL LIGHT THAT ENTERS THE RESIDENCES.
IN RESPONSE TO THIS, I BANKED MY ACCOMODATION ON THE NORTHERN PART OF THE SITE, WHICH ALLOWED ALL UNITS TO HAVE SOUTH FACING WINDOWS.

2
TAKING PRECEDENT FROM THE AGRICULTURAL TERRACING IN SOUTH AMERICA, I STEPPED THE GREEN PUBLIC SPACE DOWN TO THE WATER IN ORDER TO MAKE IT A THEATRICAL SPACE, WITH THE STEPS ACTING AS ROWS OF SEATS.
TO MAXIMISE THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT HITTING THE WATER, THE RETAIL UNITS WERE PLACED IN ARCADES UNDERNEATH THE EXISTING ARCHES OF THE RAILWAY.

THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES FOR MY INDIVIDUAL HOUSING UNITS WERE A CONTINUATION OF MY SCHEMATIC, BUT ON A SMALLER SCALE. I HOPED TO MAXIMISE ACCESS TO SUNLIGHT(i), AND CREATE A RURALITY WITHIN EACH UNIT, JUST AS THE SCHEME WAS A GREEN LANDSCAPE WITHIN A DENSE URBAN ENVIROMENT. I WAS ALSO INTERESTEDIN CREATING A BUILDING WHICH WAS ADAPTABLE TO THE CHANGING WEATHER IN CARDIFF, AND COULD OPEN ANDCLOSE TO ALLOW EXTRA OUTDOOR SPACE.

DIGITAL MODELLING: LASER CUT

FOR THE LASER CUT MODEL I DECIDED TO USE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE IN DETAIL MY MAIN SCHEMATIC IDEAS; BANDING, ACCESS TO WATER AND TERRACING. (SEE II.)

TO MAKE THIS MODEL, I HAD TO MAKE EACH ELEMENT SEPERATE- AS EACH WERE AT DIFFERENT HEIGHTS. THIS DRAWING WAS THEN IMPORTED INTO 3DS MAX, WHERE THE ELEMENTS WERE EXTRUDED AND WELDED ACCORDINGLY.
3
‘SECTIONING’ SEEMED TO BE AN APPRORIATE METHOD OF SHOWING THE SCHEME AND SO CUT LINES (17) WERE TAKEN IN THE Z DIRECTION BEFORE BEING SENT TO THE LASER CUTTER.
