BIOMED REALTY | Road to the Cure San Diego, CA BioMed Realty engaged FPBA to upgrade both the exterior and interior of one of their recent acquisitions. In addition to significant upgrades of the two building lobbies and related common support areas, a large shared Conference Center with leading edge AV systems was created, shared laboratory support functions were expanded and enhanced, a new Fitness Center was developed and, most importantly, a series of four new, flexible laboratory suites was created, each taking maximum advantage of the new lobbies to create highly visible individual entries for each suite.

LIGAND PHARMACEUTICALS San Diego, CA As Ligand’s business has matured they have developed a commitment to highly collaborative work environments. They wanted to leverage that transition into an extremely open and highly flexible office and laboratory environment, with an emphasis on interaction space, unstructured work environments and leading edge use of wireless electronic communication.

BIOMED REALTY | Illumina San Diego, CA This three-story 84,000 square foot laboratory and office building is the fourth building at the Towne Centre Drive Campus for San Diego based BioMed Realty Trust Inc. Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects created this lease space to be the new Administration Offices and additional research facilities for Illumina by adding Laboratories, Offices, Campus Amenities, Cafeteria, an All-hands meeting space, structured parking, and a 144 foot pedestrian bridge spanning between the Illumina Campus buildings B and C.

BIOMED REALTY | Amenities Coast 9 San Diego, CA The 9 building campus of Coast 9 Station offers life science tenants a unique and efficient opportunity to develop their business. Each building was restyled to make it an attractive option for businesses requiring suite sizes ranging from 2,500 to 27,500 square feet, with flexibility for expansion. The spacious conference center adjoins a tenant lounge with a TV/reading library and foosball table. Just down the hall is a fitness center with all the latest aerobic equipment and adjacent to the central court yard is the full service cafĂŠ

GENOPTIX | Faraday Avenue Building San Diego, CA Genoptix Medical Laboratories (recently acquired by Novartis) is a national provider of rapid oncology and hematology diagnostics and one of Fortune Magazines 10 fastest growing companies in the United States. This project comprises 44,000 square feet of laboratories, physician/technician office and work areas together with staff amenity areas and technical support space. The existing shell building and site were also completely renovated to create a more contemporary and appropriate corporate image.

HEALTHCARE PROPERTIES | Torrey Pines San Diego, CA HealthCare Properties (HCP), one of the San Diego region’s premier life science property owners, engaged FPBA for programming, architecture and interior design for campuswide upgrades of their four-building Torrey Pines Science Center. Particular programmatic emphasis was placed on creation, upgrade and enhancement of common area amenities including a new Conferencing Center, a completely revamped Fitness Center, a total renovation of the existing CafÊ including a newly-created exterior dining/gathering area and upgrades to two primary building lobbies.

GENOPTIX | CTCE Office Carlsbad, CA This project, the CTCE (Clinical Trials Center of Excellence) included a full-building tenant improvement of 80,000 square feet and houses both the CTCE and a 7,500 square foot CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) laboratory. All areas of the building were completely renovated including new R&D laboratories, extensive lab support spaces and approximately 12,000 square feet of administrative and laboratory technician space.

HEALTHCARE PROPERTIES | Science Center Drive La Jolla, CA Taking advantage of adoption of the International Building Code, Science Center Drive was completely renovated, with a more open plan, increased use of natural light and several flexible common area improvements including an expanded break room and contiguous exterior dining areas, four small and two large common conferencing rooms and an array of laboratories supporting various sized tenants pursuing a variety of scientific research.

TAKEDA | East Breakroom San Diego, CA Takeda San Diego (TSD) is a global center for excellence in structure-based drug discovery. FPBA was hired to provide design services for the conversion of an unused office suite into an employee lunch room and break area including a conference center and a new flexible office suite. For this project, FPBA proposed the use of recycled, reused and rapidly renewable building materials, in addition to energy efficient equipment, appliances and lighting.

JAMES FERGUSON, LEED® AP, NCARB president, principal-in-charge Jim’s specialty is design of life science and high technology facilities, and the people spaces supporting them. Jim is a licensed architect in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida and Colorado. As a strong proponent of sustainable design, Jim guides the team in exploration of design solutions that preserve our resources and the long-term value of facilities. Jim is a member of BIOCOM and served as President of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, San Diego Chapter.
