Situated amongst the rocks of the seaside cliffs, Can Lis’ design expresses a profound dialogue with its environment. This connection is realised not only through its architectural form but also through its materiality, where Utzon’s deliberate choice of local materials anchors the building within the island’s landscape. Madera Norte, a warm-hued Mallorcan pine, has been used throughout the house to create a series of doors, shutters, tables, benches, chairs, and more. This distinctive material, at times modest yet striking, offers visual warmth and contrast to the austerity of its stone structure.

Upon entering Can Lis, visitors encounter an indoor-outdoor foyer that faces directly toward the sea. In this sheltered space, removed from the sun’s glare, a profound silence envelops the surroundings, guiding the observer’s gaze naturally toward the horizon. One of its most distinctive features is a large mosaic of black-and-white ceramic tiles depicting a crescent moon aperture alongside a series of triangulated forms evocative of the phases of the moon. Primarily employed by Utzon to accent seating and work surfaces throughout the house, this motif introduces an element of boldness to an otherwise simplistic material palette.
Phase Series
The Phase Mobile offers a playful reimagining of this motif. It allows the symbol to be brought into the domestic setting, serving as both a memento of Can Lis and a gesture of play. Similarly, the Phase Building Blocks, a set of children’s building toys, extend this sense of engagement and creativity. Erena Series
The Erena Tableware Series pays homage to Mediterranean heritage and the culinary traditions of Mallorca. Comprising two plate sizes, a serving bowl, a serving platter, a bowl, and a distinctive cloche, the series is designed to create a cohesive and refined table setting.
As one studies the walls of Can Lis, a distinct pattern of stonework begins to emerge, revealing rhythms of both symmetry and asymmetry. This pattern reflects a tapestry of both technical and aesthetic decisions that shaped its construction. Adaptations made during the process, shaped by the engagement of local Mallorcan labour and materials, introduced subtle irregularities to the site’s grout lines and joints. The Muro Vase explores the hypothetical concept of casting recycled glass directly into the cavities of a building. A mould created from unhewn brickwork preserves a familiar sense of irregularity in both form and texture, ensuring each piece remains unique.

The Muro Series takes its name from the Spanish word for ‘wall,’ referencing its architectural origins and connection to Utzon’s Can Lis. This trio of mouth-blown recycled glass vases, each with distinct dimensions and forms, draws inspiration from the texture and structure of bricks. Shaped using moulds from actual bricks, the vases embody subtle architectural nuances, while the hand-blown process imparts an artisanal character to each piece.

At the top of the western wall in the living room, a strategically positioned aperture window reflects Utzon’s nuanced approach to the phenomenological experience of light. Most evenings, the light can be seen slowly washing over and ascending the wall before diminishing and disappearing entirely. This fleeting interaction anchors the house to its environment, highlighting its relationship to the elements and revealing a profound sensitivity to the unseen and ephemeral. The Oeste Pendant and Table Lamp seek to recreate this experience by casting light upon stone in a similar manner. Suspended sheets of travertine obscure the light source while offering a warm, natural surface onto which light is cast and reflected.

We have created an internal framework entitled ‘Responsible Suppliers’. To be classified a responsible supplier, ours must adhere to initiatives and certifications like BSCI, SA 8000, FSC™, GOTS or GRS, reflecting their dedication to aligning with our mission of promoting responsible practices and ensuring stringent criteria for human rights and fair working conditions are met.
Our products undergo risk assessment and rigorous testing in accredited laboratories, and we comply with applicable national and international regulations and standards such as REACH for environmental and health requirements.
To stay ahead of upcoming legislation, we’re replacing our “RESPONSIBLE” tag with “CERTIFIED.” This to ensures we comply with new regulations.

The “CERTIFIED” tag guarantees that the product meets verified environmental or social criteria across our entire supply chain, giving you greater transparency and credibility in your choices. When you see the ‘CERTIFIED’ tag, it means the product is either FSC™-, GOTS-, GRS - or OSC 100-/ Organic blended-certified. This guarantees higher transparency and credibility, as each link in the supply chain must meet certification requirements. GRS, the Global Recycled Standard
An internationally recognised certification, GRS verifies products are made with recycled materials, ensuring compliance with strict environmental, social and chemical standards across the supply chain. It promotes transparency and responsible practices, confirming that recycled content is traceable and ethically sourced - from the initial recycling phase to the final product.
GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard
Recognised as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental and social criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain.
OCS, the Organic Content Standard
Products certified to the OCS contain organically grown content/ material that has been independently verified at each stage of the supply chain, from source to final product.
FSC™, The Forest Stewardship Council™
An international, non-profit certification scheme for wood and paper. In FSC forestry, animals and plant life are protected and no more wood is felled than the forest can reproduce, either through natural regeneration or replanting. At the same time, the FSC ensures that workers’ rights throughout the certified supply chain are respected. Look for our FSC™ certified products on our website.
NORDIC SWAN ECOLABEL
A Nordic Swan Ecolabel candle is a candle meeting specific criteria for environmental performance as well as health aspects, quality and safety.
BSCI, the Business Social Compliance Initiative
