CIUDAD NEZA /CIDE Development Centre of Echo-technologies (CIDE)
For my thesis project, the assignment was to design a Centre of Investigation and Technological development, focused on hydrological solutions. The context was the site of the New International Airport of Mexico City, or what was left of the Nabor Carrillo lake. The research for the project was based on the understanding of the basin system where the City is located. The second stage
consisted of understanding the desiccation process of the lakes in the Valley of Mexico. Many of the consequences of the water management throughout the centuries in Mexico, resulted in the generation of vulnerabilities in certain areas of the City; specially those settled on lake floor. Amongst those affectations are ground subsidence, seismic vulnerability and soil degradation. One 2
of the localities with grater affectations is Nezahualcoyotl, that in addition of bordering with the remaining water bodies, is the final part of the sewage drain route of the City. Due to its urban problems, Nezahualcรณyotl Municipality was chosen as the place to develop the project.

CIDENEZAHUALCÓYOTL
The Development Centre of Ecotechnologies (CIDE) is the last stage of the project. The investigation pointed out the necessity for education and alternatives among themes of water management and use of available resources for urban agricultural production. The architectural project proposes the generation of an equipment that also functions as urban infrastructure because of it’s capacity to collect water and promote education. The project in it’s urban location is an example of the possibilities of services that a building can contribute to its’s surroundings, like flood control. The architectural program is centered in education and investigation, both at a domestic and urban level. At the same time the exterior program complements each part of the architectural program through work places creating practical experience. Water investigation area counts with diverse schemes of water treatment such as wetlands, water retention pond, and a water treatment plant. The agricultural investigation area counts with different types of production such as a permaculture orchard, greenhouse, and botanical gardens.

PROJECT APPROACH
The project comes form the analysis of the East part of the Metropolitan Zone of Mexico Valley. The purpose was to generate an urban proposal focused on solving problems related to marginalization. Through analyzing the indicators of marginalization, segregation, density and public transport it was concluded that there were defined limits that indicate the change in life quality conditions. The mentioned limit was defined as the area of study because of it’s potential to implement transport infrastructure as part of the urban equipment proposed; 29
the strategy would allow to bring closer the communities living on the perifereal ĂĄreas of the city, and improve their life quality. The final proposal was an intervention that focuses on connectivity, water management and equipment on the limits of Iztapalapa and ChimalhuacĂĄn municipalities.
EAST ZONE INDICATORS
POPULATION DENSITY It is obtained by dividing the number of inhabitants living in an specific place, by the number of square kilometers that the place measures. INEGI
SOCIO-SPATIAL SEGREGATION Commonly reffers to the spatial proximity of families that belong to the same social group, and it’s distance to other ethnic, racial or socioeconomic groups. INEGI
MARGINALIZATION It is understood as the assortment of social disadvantages of a certain comunity or locality. Education, housing, commodities availability. INEGI
30
STUDIO AREA BUFFER
The area contained by the social indicator lines is the geographical transition towards the zone of marginalization. The area inside the lines is where the lack of water, connectivity, and flood affectations increase.
Images are selfgenerated with INEGI data. 31
TOPOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS OF THE AREA
The relation between poor life conditions and the increase of topographic height was also found when the buffer was displayed over the model. As the informal localities expand into the slopes, the more difficult it is to the city to provide basic services such as connection to water and electricity. 32
MARGINALIZATION DENSITY SEGREGATION Images are selfgenerated with INEGI data. 33
Images are selfgenerated with hydrological simulators 34
IZTAPALAPA WATER ANALYSIS
The image shows the accumulation of runoff that coincides with some of the avenues that descend from the highest areas of Iztapalapa and Chimalhuacan. This indicator points out that in addition to the social factors by which this area is classified as marginalized, this area also suffers from poor sewage drain infrastructure causing floods and waterloggings. 35
36
MASTER PLAN
Through the analysis of the buffer, taking into account transport, connectivity, hydrographic system and equipment, it was concluded that the actions carried out would have the task of communicating the northern area of Iztapalapa, with the South zone through streets specifically selected to promote connectivity, called Sutures. It is proposed to connect them to Ermita-Iztapalapa street. The Sutures, in addition to promoting South-North connectivity, proposes a series of facilities distributed in nodes with secondary streets, mitigating with these services the marginalization of the area. 37
38
SUTURE CLASIFICATION
TYPE 1 SUTURE
Each Suture has characteristics that respond to its topography, demography and importance in terms of connectivity; said character determines the proposed equipment; however, they all function as a means of connectivity, from the northern zone to the highest topographic zone on the south, and in the east-west axis, the Sutures would be connected through secondary streets.
Type 1 suture is characterized by its predominantly flat topography, and for being of a housing type throughout its entire length. It lacks topographic accidents, and is located west of Iztapalapa.
INTENTIONS: a) Due to the topography Sutures have geographical accidents in their route, mostly subsidences. These subsidences are used as water collectors, which is later distributed to adjacent housing areas.
TYPE 2 SUTURE Type 2 suture is charachterized by its ascendant topography that in it’s highest point is 300 meters above the mayority of the city.
b) The Sutures become equipment as they will be converted into linear parks. c) There will be a transport system that connects to the upper zone to the city.
TYPE 3 SUTURE Type 3 suture is characterized because of having the highest topography in Iztapalapa. It’s housing área has been consolidated and counts with basic services; the housing area located in the top of the slope is populated by informal settlements and scattered towards agricultural áreas.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
CAMBIAR
Inatur competition invites architecture students to create a proposal for a Nature Observatory in any part of the world. The chosen place for the project is the base of Xinantécatl Volcano. It is an important HITO for Mexico State. The Nevado of Toluca, as it is commonly known, has some of the highest points on the country, and it is characterized because of having two lagoons inside it’s crater. Nowadays it’s importance resides not only on being an important touristic destination, but because of the ecosystems that exist in its hillside. The touristic attraction surrounding this natural monument consist in hiking up to get to the crater to be amazed by the 45
beauty of the lagoons, the rock walls and snow. The proposal for the Observatory was to create a panoramic view that presents the crater from a different perspective. For it’s development it was important to create a path that accentuated each of the representative parts of the Volcano.

Parque Lira is part of the history and culture of Tacubaya, as well as being located at a key point for the water treatment of the SAC. The proposal of ORU was to incorporate the park into the water system of the SAC, and turn it into an example in terms of the measures that can be taken in the public space for appropriate management of water in urban environments.
