Tertulia Flamenca is a cultural project promoting the spread of innovative flamenco. Our extensive research and documentation will reveal its depths of historical influence, as well as place it in the ever-expanding global music scene. In this series of four sequential Sunday evenings, we will: reveal the mysteries and diversity of flamenco styles; demonstrate it in simple, practical and entertaining ways; explore its essential rhythms, melodies and harmonies guide participants in gaining a better appreciation for and enjoyment of this unique musical form experience the cultural imprint that has been the key to creating recognition of this musical art form all over the world. Innovative musical interpretation will include live and video settings for the poetry and prose of four exemplary writers in Spanish history: Miguel De Cervantes, Antonio Machado, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Juan Ramon Jimenez. These literary gatherings are open to all in a natural collaboration with two pillars of literature in the city of Santa Fe, Collected Works Bookstore and Alla, the only Spanish language bookstore in the region. “Salon Sundays� are open to the public and participants are invited to attend one or more evenings. Hosts are FERNANDO BARROS LIROLA, cantaor and founder of the International Center of Flamenco and CARLOS LOMAS, reknowned innovative guitarist with deep links to flamenco luminaries.
This literary gathering is open to all residents, guests and visitors to the city of Santa Fe and the communities of Northern New Mexico.
August 9 – Canto Como Leo: Text by Miguel De Cervantes, represented in Flemish (flamenco)songs, original to Fernando Barros. INTRODUCTION: Each week we will use an author to initiate dialogue among participants for this form of unique world music.

With Federico Garcia Lorca. we will explore the multifaceted range of his lyrics represented by his seminal, most classic and innovative poem, “Poet in New York”, published in 1929-1930.
To revitalize each poet´s lyrics, to remember his legacy and to recapitulate the lineage of the music, form the vital part of our desire to present this innovative performance. Additionally, the styles will be explained and the musical harmonies emphasized, along with the lyrics of each of the poems where the themes of light and water illuminate each poet.

That is why the verses of Juan Ramón Jiminez will be the "fandango", of the land so dear to him as well as "tientos" in the poem "The Final Journey” or “The Definitive Trip.”

This is an artistic performance which is expressed by flamenco music, offering the opportunity to explore themes of the poems chosen. This work is dedicated to Spanish poets and authors of the XX and XXI centuries: Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca, Miguel Hernandez, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, etc. Several poems have been set to music and performed with various flamenco singing styles: soleares seguidillas, tangos, bulerías, joys, Malaga, granainas, tientos, romances, tonás ...
The proposed activity features the aforementioned authors, but will mainly focus on three renowned Andalusian poets: Juan Ramón Jiménez, Antonio Machado and Federico García Lorca. Our goal is to reveal the poetic and symbolic work of these three great Andalusian poets who are universally known and renowned. We will reveal how each piece closely links to each individuals´ life and work as well as to flamenco. *
