Dear Youngest Self, I remember you! Too brief. Too quick. All you ever cared about, was what to cut and stick. Milk teeth! That energy! An imagination running wild. I know that you wont understand, Until you’re no longer a child. I guess that you’ll be declaring, I want to be a big boy! Well I can tell you how big boys act, So you better put down that toy. 20 years have gone. So quick. And mad. I’m scared to inform you, of antics I may have had. Don’t let anyone waste your time, Your friends will come and go. When you’ve found a friend for life, Somehow, you’ll just know. I know that you’re not a fool I hope, you know they’ve lied Your dog didn’t run away Unfortunately it died. Take care of your body Eat well Just think You’ve got to be quite healthy, to deal with all this drink Now. I know that you don’t dress yourself You’re not bothered what you wear But by letting your mum, it wont be too fun When you’re older and aware page 18

One day you’ll dress as batman Maybe a pirate the next? Don’t raid your mum’s makeup bag Because photographs exist Parents are annoying The nagging And fuss. But they’ll be appreciated one day, when you’ve missed the bus. You’re told girls have the lurgy A part of this is true Improve on your judge of character Because some of them really do Remember to be cautious Stay well away from danger As it pains me to inform you You’re not a Power Ranger Change will come. Youth? Never lost! Live your life wild and free, forget about the cost. As you get older Something will go on Those little hairs, sprout everywhere! On your chest, face and tum. I hope you’ve been enlightened And my words have been kind Just one last thing, before I go Santa isn’t… never mind!

Dear Younger Self, I remember you! So wild. So free. But when the time comes, you wont remember me. That beard! Those piercings! That thick untamed hair. I guarantee you’ll miss it. When one day, it’s not there. So I fathom that you’ll be wondering. Where we ended up? Well I have great news of your enlightenment, So I guess that you’re in luck. 30 years have gone. So long. Yet so fast. I never thought I’d speak to you, but now I am at last! Many a man you’ll meet in life. Many you’ll call a friend But some of these bonds will burn out fast And some stay ‘til the bitter end Those moments you fill with laughter The ones you’ve truly shared? They’re the ones that you are after! But I know you’re yet to care. Take care of your body. Stay fit Don’t slack It’s much harder to exercise, when you’ve got trouble with back. Now. On the subject of fashion. The way you like to dress? I’m glad to say, this is only a phase. Because, you look a mess. page 32

It’s not about the money. I know you like to spend. Not everything is fashionable, So forget about a trend. Money is nothing. Family? Can be lost. So enjoy your time as you age, don’t dwell upon the cost. I know you’re soon to fall in love, With the most beautiful girl. Hold her tight and keep her near Forever, she’ll be your world I know you never thought of a family You’re future? What would come? No feeling is ever greater, To have a daughter or a son. Youth was great! Ageing? Should stop! I would do things differently, If I could turn back the clock. We have turned out great. There is no need to fear. I’m can still jive, at fifty-five. Death? Nowhere near! I hope you’ve enjoyed my wisdom, Take as much in as you can. You’ll live your own life anyway, To become your own man.

Yours Faithfully,

Older Self MOB

The backroom of a local bar in Newcastle’s vibrant student dominated city centre is where I first felt their presence. It takes a certain type of person, let alone band to command a room as soon as they enter it, and damn did they. I rose from my chair as if I was preparing myself to bow to them as they swayed towards me, elegant but ever so powerful. My mind was a spin as I was approached. I felt the need to perch myself upon a seat and take this energy in, but I was in a gravitational pull. The thirst I had for knowledge about these four men, had to be quenched and soon.

page 50

I was greeted with pleasant smiles and then began the chat. Processing my thoughts swiftly, I loitered on appearance. Clean. Crisp. Collected. These were the first words I input into my overloading brain. Regimented. Monotone. Sharp. These then followed in succession, it was as if my mind was being intercepted to only process words best for describing royalty. I tried my hardest to put a finger on their style, but what I could instantly gather from the collective; less is more. All men in flawless crisp white shirts, absent from each was a tie; I’m later informed this is down to taste. One member of the band had added to the look with the addition of classic silver men’s jewellery dotted around his being: a collection of rings, a pendant necklace and a small single earring which flicked from side to side as he moved. I could clearly tell from their ensembles each members role in the band, even from the most miniscule of differences. Each man had an outfit base to build upon: A sleek shirt, tailored leg and smart shoe, each only ever in a monotone colour. I quickly educated myself upon the fact that brights, we’re not their thing. Underdressing or as sturdily stated by the band to myself, dressing poorly, is never an option for them. From what could be viewed by an ignorant outsider judging their look as somewhat bland, the key is in the detail. From each top button fastened up; to every hair gelled with perfect precision, nothing in this band has ever been thrown together. MOB

AVENUES look is truly a representation of them as a collective, and every detailed thought process that then accumulates as an end result, deserves to be applauded. These boys are not looking to conform to the look often seen in the modern day music culture. Those manufactured pop bands in their mismatched yet highly over thought outfits; wearing ill-fitting T-shirts and far too skinny of jeans. This change from the norm was a virtuous step, and what sets them apart from the over hyped monotonous cloned crowd. The band should continue to work with their strengths; holding dear a timeless elegance flowing hand in hand with their music and consistently beautiful outfits, that define them as individuals in the industry.

The band plays to me their new song; My Days, My Afternoons and I shame. I close my eyes and dive deep into my imagination A dance floor. A deal. These boys certainly don’t shy away from breaking page 56

Bountiful lyrics aside, when we truly take into account the genuine feel of the music, then only truly can AVENUES be understood how they see themselves as one. The deep distinct voice, adds a depth to the sound that is difficult to comprehend. It feels almost unnatural to enjoy such slow delicate tone and whilst you are being unwarily entranced, the melody is slowly creeping up like a midday shadow. Until suddenly you encounter a hasty snap back to reality, and then lose yourself to the music in its entirety. Each tune is distinctive, but as a combined art form, the songs this band has recorded are poignant with the current music tastes. Guaranteed to either; enlighten or distress.

My time with AVENUES has been somewhat of illuminating experience. My life seems somewhat richer, based purely on a conversation and my own judgement. Expecting great things from this band is not unrealistic; they have the look and the sound, a perfect combination in the tough world of the music industry. I foresee with only a mere glance into the future, my prediction of greatness will be set in stone. page 60
