When we were young, the days felt endless and the memories vivid and bountiful. Why? Well, some say it could be due to our age. In our youth time seems slower because our experiences were ‘being processed in rapid fire.’ Each second of actual time is packed with more mental images, in comparison to fewer as we age and thus a perceived quicker passing of time.
Researcher Professor Adrien Bejan adds that being rested can help slow this passing of time. Which makes sense - we are more alert and aware of our surroundings allowing us more ‘time’ to take it all in. But perhaps there is more we can do.
There is a change that occurs as we age. Responsibility increases substantially and the never ending ‘to do’ list is always in the backdrop. In the process, we lose the natural playfulness of our youth. Of course, many responsibilities are hard to disregard. The mortgage or rent needs to get paid. Kids need to be taken care of. Work needs to get done. But what would happen if we added a little whimsy back into our day-to-day lives? Slow things down, play games, be spontaneous, sing and dance and be silly?
Last month, my family and I went to Shred Kelly’s Tiny Concert in the Annex Park. It was early into phase three of BC’s Restart Plan and we were excited and curious and a bit nervous. It’s hard to describe what unfolded… dancing barefoot in the grass for the entire show with smiles and belly laughs and tears of joy. It was beautiful and energetic and unabashed and every person there was part of it. Time slowed down, we felt and experienced every second and the images are forever etched in our memories.
Here’s to making time for whimsy this August.
