T
he holidays. A time of joy and peace and family and friends. Gratitude and love and all things good and beautiful. Well, not always. Not for everyone. For many people, this time of year is challenging. Whether it’s deeply rooted with memories and experiences from childhood or is freshly cut from a recent loss or hurdle in life, facing family and friends, attending gatherings, completing ‘to do’ lists… these all might seem pointless, full of emotion, insurmountable and quite honestly the last things they want to do. So, what can we do? Practice generosity of spirit. Compassion. Empathy. Talk with your family and friends. Lead by example and share your feelings and emotions with your children. Ask the important questions - How is everyone feeling? Who is alone or struggling among us? What silent challenges are they facing, what have we missed, how can we help? Let’s challenge ourselves this holiday season - by opening our arms, our homes, our community. Perhaps it will be just the thing someone didn’t even know they needed. Krista Turcasso, Editor

On December 19, 2009, The Loaf opened as a bakery and café in a miner’s cottage on 6th Avenue. It quickly gained an audience, wooing Fernie with freshly baked goods and great coffee. With this enthusiastic following behind them, The Loaf moved up to bustling 2nd Avenue in 2012, where it became the popular neighbourhood restaurant it is today. With craft beers, a coveted brunch menu, pizzas and house-made pasta, it’s a solid downtown favourite.

Gifting Your Assets as Part of Estate Plan
For example, if you would like to give a coin collection to your son, you could make it legally binding by making an oral declaration that it is being given as a gift. You would then physically hand it to him. However, to avoid any legal disputes about intention after you die, it is wisest to create a legal document to accompany the act of gifting, such as a gift deed or declaration.
by ROMAN RYBAR, CFP
M
any people have discovered that gifting assets while they are still alive is a valuable estate planning technique for passing wealth on to their adult children. One of the most important benefits of making a gift - which can be defined as a voluntary transfer of property to another made without an expectation of anything in return - is that the act could reduce the overall tax burden of your estate. On the day you die, the government will deem all of your assets to have been sold at “fair market value,” assuming you are not leaving them to your spouse or commonlaw partner. As a result, you could have substantial capital gains in that one year, pushing you into a higher tax bracket on your final return, with the gains taxed accordingly.
IT’S IN THE NUMBERS
STOCK PHOTO
Many people have discovered that gifting assets while they are still alive is a valuable estate planning technique for passing wealth on to their adult children.
A gift is presumed to be final, with all rights of ownership transferred to the beneficiary. If you want to retain some form of control over the gift, the creation of a trust is an option you may want to consider. You could ensure that when you die, full ownership rights would pass to your child by way of the trust document. There is much to consider in transferring wealth to your adult children - and estate planning in general - so make sure you consult with your financial advisor, along with a tax or legal professional, to determine what’s best for you.
If the assets are gifted over a number of years, capital gains taxation may still be applicable, but it could occur within a lower tax bracket, meaning you may pay less tax. Keep in mind that gifts of cash do not give rise to any taxes at the time of the gift. In addition, gifting your assets to your adult children can help minimize the size of your estate. This could potentially lower probate, executor and legal fees.
CANNABIS CO.
But perhaps the most important advantage of all is that you get the satisfaction of seeing your gift help your children while you are still alive. To make a gift legally enforceable, there must be evidence of the gift giver’s intention to make a gift, as well as a physical act to demonstrate that intention.

FEATURE ARTIST
LEAH BODIE Wild Child Sewing came about from a personal need for clothing for my daughter that was unique, of great quality, and a reflection of our lifestyle here in Fernie. I wanted clothing that was going to fit her and last her longer than the clothing I was finding in department stores or online. My mom taught me how to sew when I was young and ever since I have been modifying my own clothes to get a better fit. After I started making clothing for my own daughter, people started to notice
and compliment her outfits. They would ask if I could make some for them. Lots of family and friends suggested that I start selling my creations. I decided to give it a shot. So I came up with a name that I felt best reflects the adventurous spirit of the children in our community. Then I signed up for my first Craft Fair and it was a great success. I started to recognize the great joy I felt when I was choosing fabrics and modifying patterns to achieve a final creation that someone can wear and use.
When I started Wild Child Sewing I was only making Grow With Me pants (a unique style that has an extendable waistband and cuffs that fold up and down to allow the pants to grow with the child). I then started to experiment with different sewing patterns and knit fabrics. I started making sweaters, dresses, summer rompers, jumpers, and hoodies. Hoodies have quickly become my most popular and requested item. Especially in the Elk Valley because people want to invest in a great quality hoodie that their child will not outgrow
too quickly and will also keep their child warm all year long. After many requests, I started to sell adult clothing. I offer women’s hoodies, sweaters and cardigans. I also offer a modified nursing friendly option in the hoodies and sweaters that have built-in zippers to allow for easy access to breastfeed. I was recently chosen by Harrow Lane Textile Company (a fabric company located in Nova Scotia) to showcase their fabrics before they are available to purchase. This opportunity has allowed me to grow artistically and collaborate with other artists like myself. I also love that I can support other artists as they use original hand-painted artwork for the designs on their fabric. Creating in the community of Fernie has been incredibly rewarding. Especially when I am out and about and see a child wearing one of my creations. It always puts a big smile on my face and motivates me to continue sharing my passion. The support I have received from both the locals and fellow artisans has been amazing. I love being able to provide this service and share my talents with my community. In the future, I want to keep sharing my creations with people while developing my sewing skills to add more clothing options to my website. I want to continue to bring satisfaction to parents knowing that they have invested in a high quality and practical piece of clothing that will allow their child to grow and explore in comfort. For more on Leah and Wild Child Sewing, visit wildchildsewing. com. Also make sure to attend the Fernie Craft Fair this December 21 from 10am to 3pm at the Fernie Community Centre. FERNIEFIX.COM

ARTBEAT
The Art of Holiday Survival by MICHAEL HEPHER
E
very year I tell myself I’m going to be more ready. As an artist, the holiday season is so vital to my survival that I want to have it all ready. For many artists, more than half of the revenue we generate comes from sales in November and December— driven by art markets and gift sales for the holiday season. I know it’s important, but every year the universe seems to intervene that prevents me from really making the most of this season of opportunity. Two years ago we’d just returned home from a two-month jaunt around the province in our van—to a large pile of ‘to do’ items in the studio. Last year I was neck-deep in renovations to turn a garage into a suitable home for some printing presses. This year, I was finally looking forward to coming into the holidays ready and fresh, and then in mid-August, I found out I was going to be spending the month of September and chunk of October painting the new mural. Even though the timing is not ideal, all of these have been great things and I’m learning to roll with it. As John Lennon said, “life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans”. And so it goes that here I am again— another November working long nights, holding the reigns of a dozen projects, packing and pricing prints, trying to keep it all on track through the market season, and it’s got me thinking about my life choices. Am I going to survive? To the art buyers, I want to say that I am very grateful to all of you who chose handmade gifts this season. From the perspective of the artisan, even though it’s a lot of work getting it all together, I never feel like it’s a burden because of the joy I see when people find something unique and perfect for someone they love. have a little bit of artist in us, so keep your brush on the canvas.
To the artists and makers, if you’re anything like me, your heart starts beating faster as you lay in bed at night thinking about all the things that have to happen. Let’s all take a collective breath and accept that this is how it is and forever will be for us. It won’t all get done, but we will get through it and we will be okay. It will be worth it and we’ll have a lot less art in our studios when it’s over.
Official 2019 artists’ holiday downtime inspiration list 1. Try something different! Tackle a new medium or go abstract.
The best thing about getting all the markets over with by early December is that when our family starts rolling in, or the snow starts piling up, and the packages start collecting around the tree, we can sit back and enjoy it. As such, I’ve created a list of things to do once the crazy has passed, and you have nothing in front of you but a glass of eggnog and a bowl of munchie mix. This list is designed for the artists’ downtime, but can just as easily be enjoyed by all the muggles in your life too, so drag a kid or a grandparent along into your downtime adventure.
4. Sparkles! Decorate a card with glitter and glue. This is very important.
Thank you all for another great year of talking about art, dreaming about art, meeting new artists, and making new art. Happy holidays to all and remember; we all
2. Collaborate! Get together with another artist and brainstorm a project. 3. Get crafty. Make a paper chain or popcorn garland. Simple is fun.
5. Write a real letter to someone (with doodles in the margin). Mail it. 6. Recycled Materials Centrepiece: An important item for the modern dinner table. 7. Cruise Pinterest for holiday treats. Make art you can eat. 8. Have a nog and draw party with your friends. 9. Reinvent the game board from your favourite game, play it with family. 10. Get out of the studio. Take a break. Take a breath. he first time I met my new cousin, Avery McCrady, was at my bridal shower. She was just a wee one back then, nestled gently in her mother’s arms, her eyes smiling. Although she wasn’t the only baby at the shower that day, this little one had me hypnotized. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her! Since then, Avery and I have been lucky enough to live in the same town and connect on the regular. She’s like a daughter to me, my friend, my family. For our holiday issue this year, I looked no further than into the smiling eyes of Avery. This holiday season, take good care of each other and remember to spend time with the people who hypnotize you.

Hyena Road by ANDREW VALLANCE
N
ext to the Vietnam War, the war in Afghanistan is the second-longest war in the history of the United States. The war, code named Operation Enduring Freedom (2001–14) and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (2015–present), resulted from the United States’ invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001. The U.S. was supported initially by the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia and later by a coalition of over 40 countries, including all NATO members. The war’s supposed aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan through the removal of the Taliban from power, but it has been seen as controversial with goals that are now viewed as extremely dubious and without widespread support. However, given that it has been going on for the last 17 years, perhaps it is time for another examination of the conflict. Hyena Road is an American-style military movie based on the trials of the Canadian army in Afghanistan. I don’t mind films that examine such subject matter as long as they are decently written, paced, and directed. Unfortunately, I can’t say that Hyena Road, written and directed by Paul Gross, fulfils any of those needs. The characters are one dimensional, the story is not absorbing, and the pace is slow. While Paul Gross plays an impressive role as an army intelligence officer, most of the other characters, even the villainous warlord who is the film’s main antagonist, are bland and unmemorable. The film also features Allan Hawco, an actor best known for his role as Detective Jake Doyle in the St. Johns-based CBC crime drama Republic of Doyle. Hawco is a great performer, but his talent is wasted in Hyena Road where he appears in only a few scenes, plays a minor character, and does not get to flex his acting muscles.
The story focuses mainly on a small squad of soldiers trying to rescue a group of Afghan girls who are to be sold into slavery. They are aided by a legendary Mujahadin fighter known locally as “the ghost.” This is not Paul Gross’ first military movie. Perhaps the fact that his father was a career soldier, colonel and tank commander may have influenced the films he produces. Gross wrote, starred in and directed Passchendaele (2008), which
THE RENTAL FIX
tells the story of a major WWI battle. In a different vein, he directed Men with Brooms, a Canadian curling comedy, and he starred as Constable Benton Fraser for two seasons in the television series Due South. He is clearly a talented actor who is striving for a reputation as a director as well. Unfortunately, he has missed the mark with this latest effort. On a personal level, I had difficulty engaging with the film because I had trouble identifying with the portrayal of Canadian forces as just another U.S.-style lean, mean fighting machine. Perhaps the current national focus on peacekeeping has made me less appreciative of the trials faced by our soldiers when they are fighting on a war front. It’s not a movie I would recommend. Half a thumb for some terrific cinematography.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus by KRISTA TURCASSO
I
n November, Mr. and Mrs. Claus took the time to meet with me prior to the mad rush of the holiday season. While they admitted they were a wee nervous to leave the elves to their work back at the North Pole, they also confessed their love for our mountain town and were happy for an additional excuse to visit. Not surprisingly, the Claus’ schedule is packed with events. You see, on top of preparing and delivering presents to children around the world, they are committed to giving back to communities. In our area (from the Crowsnest Pass to Jaffray) they do this by attending events. Christmas parties, celebrations at schools, community gatherings such as the Light up the Night or Holiday Train, there is nothing too small or too big and believe it or not, they have never said no! “Whether it’s a few minutes or five hours, a staff gathering or kids party, we get so much energy from these events and always feel on top of the world after leaving. When you do this, your own personal troubles disappear,” says Mrs. Claus. All of the money the Claus’ raise by attending these events stays in the communities they visit. Having done this for 17 years, with the last five to six becoming quite busy, they share that with events such as the Festival of Trees partnering with multiple organizations they have been able to give back up to $27,000 in a year, and last year on their own a wonderful $7500. Mr. and Mrs. Claus have become a beacon of hope during the holidays for those in need. Last year a family was in a car accident near Fernie and had an unfortunate change of plans with their Christmas. While their mom received care at the hospital, the children and father stayed at the Super 8. The staff at the hospital had an in with Mr. and Mrs.

Claus, who jumped (or should I say flew) at the opportunity to brighten this family’s Christmas. “It was awesome. So great for the kids and helped put a different spin on things for the parents,” adds Mrs. Claus. They also make sure to spend time with those who might feel alone this time of year, specifically at retirement communities or assisted living homes. “The oldest person I have had on my knee was 102 and a half years old, and the youngest two days old,” Mr. Claus tells me. “Everyone at Rocky Mountain Village knows us, regardless of the time of year.” From singing Christmas Carols to attending luncheons, these two admit they think of others before themselves. “We will give up something if it can help others, as it’s better to give than receive,” they say. “And we have so much fun with the kids, it’s an absolute hoot. The reactions are priceless, from the ones who are scared to the ones who are so brave and jump right up on my lap! And kids never lie!” I can
only imagine some of the things Santa has been told or asked for over the years! What is truly remarkable about these two is the magic and energy they personify. It’s infectious! Mrs. Claus tells me she has over 700 Santas in their home. “On every flat surface! I have a friendly competition with a friend who collects Snowmen.” I have a feeling she’s winning. Their love for what they do is also apparent, alongside their belief in magic. And this is what they hope they share. “Think of the people just in your community who don’t have family around, or those who need a loving hand. They need to know that you care and that people are looking out for them,” Mrs. Claus says. “And have a Merry Christmas, one and all… and be good! Because we are watching!” Mr. Claus adds. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Know that this mountain town loves you right back.

he World Health Organization sees urban parks and gardens as a component to health and well-being and are a fundamental component of any well-designed urban space. 1Green spaces are natural intersections, where we come together with intention. No distractions, no screens, simply a place to linger and enjoy the view. I may be biased, but I think Fernie has some of the most spectacular green spaces, and our community takes full advantage of our parks on a regular basis. When my kids were in soccer, I would sit on the sidelines with other parents and remark that the view of the Lizard Range couldn’t be more magnificent. Until I had a picnic at the boat launch. Or, have you seen the tennis courts with the early evening light? It is hard to pick a favourite location; they all have such unique characteristics but recently the gardens at City Hall have become my personal favourite. I rarely leave City Hall without people enjoying a stroll through the Miner’s Walk, a purposebuilt place designed to remind us where we started, honouring those hard-working folks that carved out this community of ours. I see young families often playing hide and seek, their laughter infectious. Mostly though, the beauty of our garden beds at City Hall has people pausing and walking closer to admire them. At first, they are often surprised to see Swiss chard or broccoli. Then they delight to find more produce mixed within the traditional plants. The artist of our gardens is Pam McSkimming, and she intentionally creates a waterfall of colour throughout our

While writing this article, I learned a new phrase for gardens that are built for food banks. They are often called giving gardens. I couldn’t think of a more perfect name for a space that so many people enjoy for so many reasons, it seems perfectly appropriate for a municipal building to have a giving garden. A natural extension of the work we do at City Hall on your behalf. Building and supporting our community is the goal, and I sincerely hope we can be as successful as our giving garden in that endeavour.

Celebrating and Connecting with Your Teen
As our children mature we can’t easily cart them around and dictate the itinerary like when they were younger. Teenagers sometimes have jobs and other obligations that require flexibility. Some of them even have a significant other who they want to share celebrations with. And there are definitely teens that turn up their nose at rituals we consider significant but they look at as rigid.
by KERRI WALL
H
oliday time is magical for many reasons, but the date on the calendar does not bring the magic. It’s the special way we feel that transforms annual rituals from mere activities into something deeply meaningful. The magical moments we experience in life have common traits: we feel an unusually high level of connection with our true selves and/or other people (living or dead) and/or the larger universe. The keywords here are ‘feel’ and ‘connection’ – magical moments are a feeling of connection. Taking a break from school For teenagers, the most important thing about the holidays is the school break that comes with it. Unless they are one of the few teens that unschool or homeschool, their weekday schedules are mostly set by adults and involve some - or many activities they perform out of duty rather than interest. A few weeks off can mean an opportunity to mentally and emotionally refresh, plus catch up on sleep. Parents often underestimate how stressful school can be for teenagers. Compulsory education involves early mornings that don’t coincide well with adolescent circadian rhythms, as well as the pressures of constant deadlines and peer competition. Assignments and tests are hard enough to juggle, especially in the upper grades when the expectations to meet post-graduation requirements are highest. Then consider the additional social strain of trying to belong amidst a culture of comparison about everything from how you look to what music you like. It is difficult to feel connected when demands from school, work, and sports are pressing down. A definitive pause
PLANNING AHEAD
V. CROOME PHOTO
If you find out what is important to your child – and share with them the most important things to you – you can identify together where a connection can most easily happen. in the regular lineup of commitments allows for long moments of nourishing connection. Lazy brunches, evening visits with extended family, whole days at the ski hill or out on the sleds, and of course more traditional customs like New Year’s Eve celebrations and presents beneath the tree offer precious opportunities for family members of all ages. Making decisions with teenagers Many of us like to do the same things year after year to mark holidays and special occasions. Practicing traditions handed down from our parents and grandparents can help us feel connected to them and a younger version of ourselves. Perhaps you *always* cut down a tree with the kids or enjoy a big meal together at the same relative’s home. Teens might throw a wrench into these plans.
Making decisions as a family and letting teenagers have some power over what happens carries a lot of benefits.Your quickly-changing adolescent is not the same person they were last December, so just because they loved decorating cookies for the last 10 years doesn’t mean they feel the same this time. If you find out what is important to your child – and share with them the most important things to you – you can identify together where a connection can most easily happen. Re-connecting as a family Holiday time is perfect for re-connecting. Family is near, the demands of work and school are reduced, and our hearts become warm with generosity and togetherness. When our children are small it seems like parenting will go on forever; their needs are great and the work dominates our lives. But once young people become teenagers, how many Christmases with them do you really have left? We may have snow all winter but do you make the time to actually go play in it together? There might be a pile of board games in the closet but how often does the whole family get to dig them out for hours of fun? No matter what seasonal holidays you celebrate, or what your religious inclinations are, this is a month when social conventions allow us to take a collective breath and slow things down. Enjoy some magical moments with your teenagers as 2019 ends. And remember: parents are heroes even when they aren’t playing Santa. FERNIEFIX.COM

FERNIE MOUNTAIN MAMAS
’Tis the Ski-son by YVONNE PREST
W
inter is here! Fernie-ites and visitors alike are eager to get outside and shred. On top of hitting the slopes, did you know that Fernie also has five unique xc skiing areas with over 50 km of trails to explore? It’s a great activity for the whole family especially as it is so accessible for new moms and soon-to-be moms. Local shredder and new mom, Melissa Traub, began xc skiing at six months pregnant. Xc skiing was a perfect fit for Mel who did not want to miss out on winter fun during her maternity. “I love being outside and absolutely love that we have this activity that we can do outdoors in the winter together. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place and I want Ember to grow up actively appreciating the environment that surrounds her.” Although it takes a little bit more preparation and equipment, the joys of taking your little ones out on the trails to immerse them in Fernie’s winter culture is well worth it. The biggest difficulty, Traub revealed, is ensuring that the baby is dressed appropriately, as a new mom, “you constantly question what you’ve put them in – are they warm enough, are they too warm?” She uses a Chariot Cougar and ski attachment which provides a cozy cocoon for her daughter, Ember. The Chariot is also great as you can add blankets and remove layers as needed. The extra weight is also a challenge at first, as you learn to find balance with baby in tow. In the end, however, Mel found the extra weight to be a perk, as it added: “to the challenge of the workout and the feeling of accomplishment.” Another benefit is that xc skiing is one winter activity that Mel can enjoy with her daughter and her husband at the same time, “as opposed to one of us doing something while the other watches the baby and then switching.” After a long xc ski, infants are often also ready for an afternoon nap, which moms and dads don’t mind either!

Although it takes a little bit more preparation and equipment, the joys of taking your little ones out on the trails to immerse them in Fernie’s winter culture is well worth it. Her advice to new moms looking to begin the sport is to persevere. To especially be kind and patient with yourself. “As with everything when it comes to being a new mom, it’s a learning curve.” Go with friends and don’t be surprised if you take a few tumbles, especially on the downhill. The trick is to have a laugh, brush the snow off and keep going. Setting a good example of what it takes to learn a new skill for your child. Mel’s favourite place to take her daughter is Montane. “I love the work out of the uphill and the cabin is a great spot for warming up, diaper changes, and breastfeeding.” She also shared that it’s a great sport because of the social aspect. It’s fun to hit the trails
with friends and catch up while enjoying some exercise. Taking baby solo is also a unique way to spend some quality time together outside of the house. Traub likes to explore more challenging terrain and will take Ember in her “backpack-style carrier when we’re going somewhere that the Chariot won’t be very practical.” With a little ingenuity, enjoying the outdoors as a family is not only possible but a great workout and a good time. This winter, at one and a half, Ember is ready to begin learning to ski herself, and no doubt these past positive experiences will reinforce her love of winter. If she’s anything like her mama, she’ll be shredding in no time! Happy cross country skiing! Are you also a Fernie Mountain Mama? Please feel free to share your outdoor adventures, family stories and photos by writing to ferniemountainmamas@gmail.com, or hashtag #ferniemountainmamas to encourage more parents to take their little ones outdoors and share in all the fun that Fernie has to offer. of Fernie and the FTA. Thank you to all of our funders and volunteers for contributing along the way.
by JULIE KELLY, FTA
We hope you enjoy your holiday season with family and friends. To kick it off why not head out on this family-friendly snowshoe on one of Fernie’s classic trails, Lazy Lizard. Head over to Mount Fernie Provincial Park, follow the signs to Island Lake Lodge and park in the lot below the gate. The trail begins with a short grunt from the road but levels out quickly. Enjoy the beautiful cedar trees and undulating terrain. You will cross a number of bridges along the way and be treated to some spectacular views. The trail finishes at the fabulous Island Lake Lodge. Be sure to call the lodge ahead of time if you are looking to book in for lunch over the winter season.

s we move into the New Year the Fernie Trails Alliance (FTA) will be celebrating a new board. We are very appreciative of the hard work the five Directors who are stepping down have put in over the years. Thank you to Dave McBeath and Pat Gilmar who began the FTA alongside Ian Stokie in 2008 and have been on the board since its inception, and to Terry Nelson who joined a few years later. JF DesLauriers and Jennifer Sliva have made some great contributions over their term. With our new board, we will be conducting a strategic planning session in January to map out the next few years. Your input from our General Meeting in November will help to guide our path. The FTA is also celebrating the success of the Fairy Creek part two connector. This

This month’s featured trail is the Mountain Shadows Loop, also fondly known as the Golf Course Loop. This is 3.8km of beginner-friendly trail that can be run, fatbiked, or snowshoed with a few good hills and beautiful forest that won’t leave you bored. If you want to embark on skis however you may find it to be more intermediate than beginner as some of the hilly sections can be quite steep for that particular winter sport. It can be accessed at the trailhead by the Sparwood Golf Club. Hope to see you out there enjoying our trails this season!

parwood Trails Alliance was hard at work this fall with its newly minted “Workparty Wednesdays” (which will make a comeback in the spring) getting the trails prepped and ready for winter grooming. With our successful fundraising event in September and a nice top-up, we were able to raise the funds to purchase a second “Snowdog” winter groomer and expand our winter trails network immensely. We have multiple trails groomed and ready for multi-use this winter: fatbikers, skiers, snowshoers, and runners or walkers welcome! Put your new Christmas gear to the test.

BARK BREAK
Golden Boy George and Fresh Foods for Dogs by VAL LANTHIER
M
eet golden boy George! He’s not your ordinary retriever, he’s a little more compact with a spicy kick to him. In fact, he represents Fernie well, in his own canine style. George is that social friend who gets along well with everyone, he enjoys outdoor adventures to the fullest in every season and he’s a hard worker (at pleasing you that is). Winter is his favourite as he shows off his athletic moves catching big air for snowballs on powder days. He’s one happy dog and if you see him on the trails, make sure to stop and say hi, if he doesn’t get to you first. The beauty of dogs is that they enrich our lives in so many ways. We find ourselves training our dogs to suit our lifestyles and in reality, they end up teaching us so much more. There are lots of ways you can return the favour, and one of those is by providing a healthy diet. I think everyone can agree, we could all use a little more fresh food in our lives! It’s no different for our furry friends. Unless you’re already feeding a fresh bowl full of goodness, go ahead and add some healthy items. For a little extra fresh protein, you can offer your dog his or her favourite meat or fish. Cook or boil it if you want to play it safe, especially pork. Check for bones in the meat and never feed cooked bones to dogs, regardless of how big or small the piece might be. Eggs are another canine favourite protein, including from chickens, ducks or quails. As far as vegetables go for some healthy vitamins and minerals, the list is long so you can narrow it down by the groups or ‘families’ that are safe:
MARY BULLOCK PHOTO
• Leafy greens are all a great choice including herbs and don’t forget edible green tops like carrot tops, beet tops and dandelion. • Cruciferous veggies make for a great crunch most dogs love, like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. • Pumpkin, cucumber and zucchini are three healthy examples from the squash family. • Root vegetables are common like carrots, potatoes, beets, sweet potatoes and yams. This group is particularly higher in carbs so don’t overdo it. Corn also fits into the high-carb category and never give your dog whole corn, they cannot digest the cob. • Celery and asparagus make up the edible stem family. • Legumes like peas and green beans are other types of healthy greens. • Finally, sprouts and microgreens are very nutrient-rich foods.
If you’re wondering how to feed them, it’s simple. Peel vegetables only when necessary and know that most can be given raw, although cooking them is a fine alternative. Of course, some have to be cooked and can be puréed, like root vegetables and squash. Fruit isn’t always a dog’s favourite snack, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of healthy options to try. In fact, only grapes and currants are bad so go ahead, feed the rainbow. Especially in the summer, store them in the freezer for a yummy cold treat. There are a few fresh foods that are toxic to dogs. Don’t give your dog onions or avocados and others that make the shortlist like chocolate, macadamia nuts, alcohol and xylitol (artificial sweetener). Next time you buy your groceries or pick from your garden, think about your dog in making healthy choices and grab a little extra to share. Don’t overthink it, dogs are scavengers by nature who can handle a varied diet. You’ll learn to know your dog’s favourites and ultimately, have fun with it! FERNIEFIX.COM

ELEMENTS OF MOVEMENT
The Season of Tabata by MADDY ALARIC
I
love you December. The snow is falling and the rum nogs are flowing. The decorations are hung while the hunt for the perfect tree is well underway. The town is buzzing and the stoke level is high with the chatter of epic days last season and guesses as to what this year’s will be. Some of us may be travelling near or far while others are staying put, opening their doors to friends and family. Whatever your plans, as the holidays unfold, everything that goes along with them tends to take precedence over our regular fitness routine. A gentle reminder that ‘doing something is better than nothing’ allows you to feel good about not prioritizing fitness over family and friends and that getting out of routine can be nice for the right reasons. So this month, wherever you are, enjoy the time spent with family and friends, make sure you get outside, embrace winter and when you have time, try this spicy little Tabata style workout that can be done anywhere with no equipment required. Bonus points if you invite your friends and family to a pre-holiday dinner sweat session. Fun fact: Tabata interval training is working hard for 20s followed by 10s rest repeated eight times. This was popularized by a Japanese scientist, Dr. Izumi Tabata. The workout below is a variation of this style in which you should be fatigued within a short amount of time. 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off each set 4 Rounds Mountain Climbers Push-Ups (modify by dropping to knees. Holiday Immune Boosting
you can’t fit in a trip to the hill. Schedule it into your day like you would any meeting or coffee date. Doing it first thing will help to set the tone for the day.
by DR. TAINA TURCASSO, N.D., R.M.
D
ecember is such an action-packed month, whether you are celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, Winter Solstice, or none of the above. It is so easy to get swept up in the energy of the season and before you know it, find yourself fighting off one virus after another and winding up spending your cherished holidays bundled up in bed instead of enjoying your family and friends. The real work of strengthening your immune system is a year-round project, but there are still some tools you can utilize to keep yourself (and your family) healthy through the holidays. The first key to staying healthy during the holidays is to get adequate rest.Your body can tolerate straying from your routine here and there if you still give it ample time to reboot and recharge. Plan to get yourself home and in bed at a reasonable hour. Turn off the TV, put down the phone, turn down the lights and give yourself at least 30 minutes to unwind by either taking a bath, reading, or writing in a journal before going to sleep. Put your phone in airplane mode if you can, and then try to spend the first 30 minutes of the day without checking your phone. This might mean leaving a function a bit earlier or setting aside your work a little sooner but will result in you feeling more rested, less harried, and will give your body much needed rest to maintain your pace for a few weeks. A major temptation for most people at this time of year is all the food that many of the functions focus on. Appetizers, multi-course meals, fancy desserts, and specialty cocktails are plentiful and it is natural to want to indulge as you spend time with your loved ones. Sharing food is an important part of celebration and also of human connection. Instead of just saying no to everything, create a game plan
FAMILY WELLNESS

Making careful choices about what you put into your body, who you choose to spend your time with, and what you expend your energy on will create an overall more meaningful holiday in addition to keeping you healthy. of eating a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables for most of the day, have a healthy snack before going to the party/ dinner so you aren’t ravenous, then allow yourself to enjoy the treats that you truly love. If you are drinking alcohol, alternate drinks with glasses of water so you stay hydrated and try to limit the beverages that are laden with extra sugar or cream. Have that egg nog if you love it, but maybe only have the one. Try to stop eating well before bedtime so your body can focus on functions other than digestion while you are sleeping. Having an earlier bedtime will naturally limit the amount of alcohol you consume, as will volunteering to be the designated driver once or twice. Luckily in Fernie exercise is one of the many ways that people celebrate winter and the holidays but it can still feel difficult to fit it in. Make a promise to yourself to prioritize exercise, setting aside 30 minutes to an hour to go for a walk/run, do a quick online workout, or go to the gym if
Complimentary therapies such as contrast hydrotherapy can not only help to clear our metabolites and toxins through the body’s main systems of elimination (skin, kidneys, liver, lungs, lymphatic system, and colon) but also actually enhance your body’s ability to fight viruses. A simple way to perform contrast hydrotherapy in your own home is to alternate hot and cold water at the end of your shower. Do the hot phase for one to three minutes and the cold phase for 30 seconds and repeat twice (total of three cycles). Additional therapies to consider are saunas/steam rooms, epsom salt baths, and deep tissue or lymphatic drainage massages. As always, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, particularly when you are doing anything that results in extra perspiration. Having a cupboard full of specific supplements to help either ward off or to treat a virus can be invaluable. No one feels like running to the store when they are feeling rundown or like they are coming down with something so set yourself up for success and have what you need on hand already. Some things I like to keep on hand include: frozen bone broth, vitamin C sachets, elderberry concentrate or syrup, vitamin D, colloidal silver throat spray, and either powdered or encapsulated mushroom supplements (particularly maitake, chaga, reishi, and cordyceps). These are all great ideas to help fuel your body in a way to meet its physical needs, but perhaps this year might be a good year to start to think about the holidays in a different way and consider being more mindful of all of the excess. Making careful choices about what you put into your body, who you choose to spend your time with, and what you expend your energy on will create an overall more meaningful holiday in addition to keeping you healthy. A LOOK DOWN SECOND AVE
For the Love of Christmas by EMMA POLIT
I
t’s the most wonderful time of the year! I freaking love Christmas. It is so magical. One of my absolute favourite things to do is walk along 2nd Ave in the evening. The stores are open a little later (thank you late night shopping), the sky is the dark and moody blue that only happens in the middle of winter, the lights adorning the trees are ambient and warm, the snow glistens, and my heart swells with love for this town. After the Hallmark card picture I just set for you, why wouldn’t you take a walk downtown and while there support our local businesses? Christmas shopping! Have you finished? Have you even started? Do you plan to do your usual Christmas Eve mad dash or is that just me?
onto it, it really turns into a delightful opportunity to share a meal. And who can say no to a charcuterie board locally made by one awesome company, and sold by another? For the Eco Lover Le Marché Shopping Bag available at The Green Petal I know it doesn’t sound present worthy – a grocery bag. But, these French-inspired shopping bags are something special. They’re lightweight, can carry a lot and are a gorgeous alternative to plastic. Available in a selection of colours, I want each one, and I’m sure your eco-lover will want one too.
For the Crystal Lover One of the hundreds of different varieties of crystals available from The Good Earth.
I’ve gathered some fun items. A range of locally-found treasures that will help you buy for almost anyone in your life – or, for yourself. ‘Tis the season, after all.
For the Art Lover A local piece of artwork from The Fernie Arts Co-op
For the Cheese Lover Charcuterie board from Ouiman’s Woodworking available at Interior Envy. Charcuterie boards are having a real moment. A cheese platter has always been a good idea, but when you add an oversized wooden board and pile fruit, crackers, cured meat, nuts, spreads and of course cheese
If the person you are buying for loves to curl up with a good book that broadens their understanding of the world, then the startling insights in To Speak for the Trees, including the discovery of mother trees that live at the heart of a forest, will spark a quiet revolution in their mind. It is a powerful book about why trees matter, and why trees are a viable, achievable solution to climate change – this might be a good one for the eco lover in your life, too!
With over 50 local artists displaying their work around the walls of the Fernie Arts Co-op, you will be sure to find the perfect gift for the art lover in your life. Memories of Fernie encapsulated in artwork that will be treasured forever. There really is something for everyone. For the Book Lover To Speak for the Trees by Diana Beresford-Kroeger available at Polar Peak Books.
If you are looking for a crystal in Fernie, then The Good Earth is your go-to store. If you’re after some advice, I highly recommend talking to Ari (the store owner). He will take a little of your time for an insight into why you’re buying the crystal, who it is for, and the intention. That’s his secret power, he is in tune with the Earth, and can provide exactly what you are looking for – even when you didn’t realize it’s what you needed. Ari will have you walking out with the perfect crystal – and leave you wondering what just happened – bonus, you also get to check out their brand new location! For the Candle Lover Magnolia Home Candles from The Green Petal It’s not only Chip that’s in love with Joanna Gaines. We all are. She’s the shiplap loving interior queen that can do no wrong. When
I saw the Magnolia Home candles, I knew that they would smell like a dream. I was right, and they come in a variety of fresh scents that will delight any room.

THIS IS LIFE
Self-Compassion This Holiday Season by TYLA CHARBONNEAU
W
e have all seen the perfect Christmas in the movies. A flawlessly decorated home sets the scene with a perfectly adorned tree. A beautiful family gathers around the piano singing carols in matching festive outfits. In the background is an impeccably browned turkey with all the yummy fixings waiting to be devoured. Grandma and Grandpa are snuggling peacefully on the couch. Mom and Dad smile lovingly at each other while the kids patiently wait to unwrap a pile of flawlessly wrapped gifts. In my world that tree is likely of the Charlie Brown variety and tied to the wall with old rope, nails, and choice words to keep it from falling over, again. My sister and niece do play the piano however, I have witnessed the dogs place their paws over their ears to drown out the sound when we sing along. Dinner involves at least one meltdown over who is making the gravy and why it is so lumpy. We laugh a lot and enjoy the holidays but there are also tough moments, hurt feelings, and honestly who waits patiently to open gifts? The expectation of the perfect Christmas can leave us feeling lesser than or not quite enough. The holiday season is joyous and it can also feel overwhelming. If you find yourself feeling sad or even angry this month, it is okay. That’s right I said it is okay and normal! Consider adding selfcompassion to your wish list this year. Dr. Kirsten Neff (see self-compassion.org) says that self-compassion is the art of providing ourselves the comfort we easily extend to others. As we navigate the holidays, and really all year round, we can practice a simple three-part self-compassion break (see self-compassion.org/exercise-2-selfcompassion-break/).

The expectation of the perfect Christmas can leave us feeling lesser than or not quite enough...If you find yourself feeling sad or even angry this month, it is okay. Step one, engage in mindfulness, the act of being aware of the present moment. Life has challenges and they are time-limited. For example, if you find yourself shopping with a child who beelines it to the toy section with a speech about why he needs the latest and greatest toy, take a deep breath and tell yourself this is a struggle right now, it will not last forever. Step two, acknowledge common humanity, we are not alone, we all have flaws and make mistakes. Imagine yourself at a cookie swap and you see all the flaws in your cookies and the beauty in your friend’s baking. Take a moment and think, “It is possible that my friends may be feeling this way too, I am not alone.”
Finally, and this is often something people find challenging, provide yourself with some comforting thoughts. When a family member gives you a look that you interpret as a judgment about your meal preparation or gift choice consider what you would tell a friend and say it to yourself. Something like, “I am doing the best that I can. I do not know 100% what that look meant and my family loves me.” One of the most salient gifts of Dr. Neff ’s work is a reminder that the actions of others are not a direct evaluation of your worth. The family member who tells inappropriate jokes is not a reflection of you, the kids arguing is not a statement about your parenting, and those gingerbread men missing an arm or leg will be as amazing as the human that you are. THE ANSWER GUY
Sharing Large Files
12TH ANNUAL
by KEVIN MCISAAC
O
ne of the requests I get regularly is how to send large files to other people. While there is no best way there are better ways than just attaching it to an email. Email attachments are risky. Many email servers, especially corporate ones, limit the size, number, and type of attachment. Typically a limit of 10MB is in place. This prevents the corporate email server from being bogged down with file processing. Especially as the server is typically also virus scanning any files going through email. They also will often limit files that have any sort of execution capability. Many users are surprised to find that this includes Excel and Word documents. Excel and Word documents, as well as Powerpoint and a whole host of others, have contained within them the ability to hold macros that can call scripts. Those scripts have at times contained malware. Hence the ban in some places. So, what is one to do if you have a 1GB file and want to send it to someone? Try send.firefox.com. This is a service provided by Mozilla, the organization which supports the web browser application FireFox. A very good web browser by the way. It doesn’t get the recognition that Edge and Chrome get, but it’s a solid and fast browser. If you bring up send.firefox.com you’ll see a screen that says drag and drop a file up to a maximum of 1GB. Then comes the cool part. You can set when the file expires. After a number of downloads (up to a maximum of 100) or after a period of time (up to a maximum of seven days). You can choose to protect the file with a password. Once you’ve made your selections you hit the Upload button to upload the file(s).
So, what is one to do if you have a 1GB file and want to send it to someone? Try send.firefox.com. Now you’re presented with a screen with a link. Copy the link and send it to whomever you’d like the file to be made available to. This can be up to 100 people. This can be a very efficient way to send a large file to a reasonably large group of people. The recipient of your message will get your email with the link to the file. When they click on the link they’ll be brought to a page which will ask for a password if you used one. Or they’ll just be presented with a download link. What’s nice about this method of file transfer is the file is encrypted at your browser and unencrypted at your recipient’s browser. So, nowhere in its travels was anyone able to examine the file even should they get the link. And after your recipient(s) have downloaded the file it will eventually expire and the link will be dead. It’s nice when programs clean up after themselves.

1GB is quite a bit, but if you’re keen to send larger files or more files at once, you can signup and get a limit of 2.5GB. That’s big enough to send an entire movie if you’re so inclined. FireFox send is super simple, easy, and safe. Happy Computing.

December 2019 by ASHLEY KRISTINA
D
ecember 2019 is a month of goalorientation and determination with a major theme of change. Duty and focus on work take the forefront until Christmas. 2020 will bring major shifts in living, relationships and work situations. The Sun travels in the sky with the asteroid Pallas, which rules sacred wisdom so pay attention to your inner knowledge and direction. Jupiter, the planet of good luck, expansion, optimism and spirituality shifts into Capricorn after having spent the past year travelling in Sagittarius and thus, the Sun, Pallas, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto travelling in Capricorn this month. Capricorn rules all things traditional which includes time, boundaries, restrictions, strength, dependability, integrity and is mostly involved with work. There is an alignment for divine purpose so that everyone starts to follow their heart and true passions. Trust the process. A Gemini Full Moon occurs on 10/11 with the Moon opposite the Sun, Jupiter, Pholus and Mercury. Words will be said after a deep and introspective November which will give a clearing of energy via truthful communication meant to inspire and construct new universes. Abrupt changes in direction are predicted. Mid-month brings unexpected opportunities so follow your passions and your heart. If you listen well you can gain a lot by making some swift moves. A New Moon occurs 10/25 at the 4th degree of Capricorn. This energy deals with group dynamics and specifically with erosion. Mark the date, as hindsight will show the means of change that will deal with entire landscapes of structure (government, legal, banking…) to enable a more practical approach.
Aries Deep and transformative career changes await you! You are the pioneer of new territories so this is exciting. Take care not to exhaust yourself. Taurus You are concerned with helping others and your own emotional security is not your predominant focus which may create internal conflict this month. It is unusual for you to not feel stable. Find balance. Gemini Your words are sharp and direct this month.Your focus is on both your career and supporting your closest family members in the way you can. Clear planning of your future and the ability to achieve your goals is optimized. Cancer You may find yourself really progressive and assertive this month as so many planets sit in your opposing energy of Capricorn. Family and home take the back burner as work is focused on.You will reap what you sow this month so put in the good work! Leo You have more of a focus on home this month, along with emotional ties. November’s retrograde Mercury brought up some past issues you must clear/cleanse to work forward to a brighter and happier future. Let this take your attention. Virgo Home is also the forefront for you, it’s a good month to do ‘work’ in the home. Cleanse your space and focus on your health and yourself as your own health will take you farther in your career in the long run. Get sweating! Libra Watch your expenses this month as your finances must take your attention. Do not let yourself overspend as it will take a long time for you to gain back harmony if you do. On a positive note, you have luck in romance and with family.
ASTROLOGY
Scorpio Focus on excelling your knowledge to create your goals and dreams. It’s a good month to spend time and money on education and getting the certificate(s) you always wanted, which brings major success for you in 2020.You are completing a fiveyear cycle of deep integration and spiritual growth. Sagittarius Family matters and emotional security are at the forefront of your priorities. Financial success will take place when you focus on these aspects first. Happy and positive energy comes from the home for you to achieve in the public/work sector. Make fun your priority! Capricorn Balance your professional and family life this month, there will not be much progress in existing relationships and perhaps it’s not easy to see ‘success’ or ‘achievement’ this month however rewards will be reaped in 2020. Practice gratitude. Aquarius You are full of good optimistic energy at work and have extra focus this month. In one month you have the ability to excel farther on the work-front than you did in the past entire year. Exploit your innate knowledge for business purposes and communicate your ideas! They will be taken well by your colleagues. Pisces You have an exciting month ahead with so many opportunities that you may feel pulled in different directions and exhaust your energy with all the festivities. Family and emotional stability come as the month ends. Use breath techniques to help centre your energy.
