For over 20 years, Fernie has been Troy and Kim’s families’ winter and summer
escapes, instilling a passion for the outdoors in them both.
As a kid, Kim and her family grew up skiing at Big White, Kelowna but in the 90s her parents and their friends decided they needed condos closer to Edmonton, which resulted in them closing in on Fernie and purchasing condos in Sparwood a short 20 minute drive to the resort. Troy, an avid snowmobiler, snowboarder and skier, spent a lot of time in Valemount and Jasper. Troy and Kim both had kids and were on the dating scene when they met on a boat at Jackfish Lake, Alberta. It was at this same time that Kim and her siblings were actively looking to buy a ski-inski-out on the hill at Fernie Alpine Resort, and offer their kids the same experience they had growing up skiing at Big White as a family.
Troy and Kim spent the following three years dating with Fernie as their destination of choice all winter and summer, skiing and mountain biking with their three kids… who actually helped Troy propose to Kim on the very same boat they met on! They wanted to have the wedding right away, and with all of the amazing family trips and memories made in Fernie, it was the natural choice for their destination wedding. “Fernie holds such a special place in our hearts, even our rings were made by Matt at Element Jewelry. The perfect venue for us and our out of town guests was the Griz Inn and Rusty Edge, with its spectacular views, great space, and everyone being able stay in the condo right there; the whole building became our village for the weekend, with kids running around from room to room to see their friends (and us, too!)” Kim says.
Planning a wedding from afar has its challenges, so after hearing wonderful reviews, the couple immediately connected with a local wedding planner, Angela Magliocco of Silver Lining Events.
“Angela was an amazing resource and handled every detail ensuring our event was planned perfectly and executed seamlessly. She also brought in her own team for catering, and the food was phenomenal, ending with a poutine bar for the midnight snack! The bridal party and family’s hair was done on site at the Griz by Sparrow Hair and their team of professionals who were able to take a few photos, with no trial run, and create a beautiful style. Flowers were provided by The Green Petal, who again, from just a few

It was important to Troy and Kim to keep it local as much as possible. The couple also provided each guest with a small bottle of Fernie Fog from Fernie Distillery at their place setting, and children received a cute chocolate moose from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
“We really can’t say enough about Angela; she thought of the perfect touches to make the day special for all the kids in attendance, including tablecloths of paper and crayons, light up balloons for the dance floor and tons of glow sticks, as well as a fun and creative photo booth using the Griz Inn vintage chairlift seat outside and 80s ski wear.
We really wanted our wedding to be comfortable, casual, and elegant. We were excited and proud to show off our home away from home, Fernie and the Griz Inn, to all our friends and family. We also wanted the event to be fun and joyous- as evidenced by the group shotski at the end of dinner! (with juice for the kids for course!).”
The only element they kept close to home was their photographer, Troy’s best friend Kelly Redinger from Edmonton. Now that, we can understand. Congratulations, Troy and Kim!
Q&A
Favourite moment of the day?
Troy’s favourite moment of their wedding day was watching Kim walk down the aisle. For Kim, she can’t pick just one! “I guess if I had to pick, I really love the dance. All of the planning and formalities were over, and we could relax and celebrate with our friends and family. The dance floor was packed all night with kids, friends, balloons and glowsticks. It was a blast and a reflection of what makes me and Troy so happy- good times with great friends.”
Advice for couples planning their own wedding?
“The best wedding for you is a reflection of you- every choice we made was in some part sharing an experience we had loved in Fernie in the past, from the guest gifts, to the venue, to the shotski moment, it created a unique event that our friends and family still rave about. I love that our wedding was held in the fall- the leaves in Fernie are spectacular, and hosting it on shoulder season helped our guests find great deals to plan their vacation.”
