WELCOME TO FERNIE, BC

SUMMER 2016 › WELCOME

BY KRISTA TURCASSO AND CLAIRE LEWIS

EVERY YEAR, I SPEND A LOT OF TIME THINKING ABOUT AND WRITING THIS OPENING. TRYING TO FIND ALL OF THE RIGHT WORDS, THE BEAUTIFUL WORDS, AND PIECING THEM TOGETHER IN AN EFFORT TO CONVEY TO YOU OUR LOVE FOR THIS PLACE AND WHY IT IS SO SPECIAL TO SO MANY. ››› This spring, I was approached by an individual interested in writing for us. Having lived in Fernie for a year and a half, and her time here quickly and sadly coming to an end, she wanted to share with our readers her love and appreciation for this place. I was in the midst of deciding on content for this guide, and it dawned on me – how refreshing would it be to provide an outside perspective? An eloquent and honest review of what made Fernie stand out to her, what enticed her to stay longer than originally intended, and ultimately what has shaped her moving forward? This Love Letter to Fernie is touching, and helpful in understanding why Fernie is truly a special place to be whether for a few days or a lifetime. Welcome.

A LOVE LETTER TO FERNIE For the last eighteen months I have been one of you lucky ones who call Fernie ‘home’. When my partner and I decided to make the most of Canada’s working holiday visa just before we turned thirty, we had many images in our mind and hopes in our heart of what to expect – but Fernie has exceeded our expectations beyond imagination. We are the classic ex-pat couple who came for a winter and stayed for a summer (and another) and it was the summer that really stunned me and revealed to me the multi-facetted community and environment that is Fernie. My Canadian adventure is starting to draw to a close and the UK will soon be home once again, but I would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to some of the more subtle gems that make this place so incredibly special.

As we move into the season of summer the sidewalks and bike trails start to appear and I am reminded of what a privilege it is (although it should be the norm) to live in a place where both are kept immaculately with very little littering. This demonstrates the great respect the community and the town’s visitors have for the environment that surrounds them. The culture and attitude around the maintenance of the bike trails is an inspiration in itself – the admirable work of all the volunteers who meet on Thursday nights deserves a nod of respect from all as well as the respect for that hard work when rain inevitably falls by taking the day off biking and letting the earth rest. Fernie is a place to make dreams a reality. Whatever the vision, many individuals find the strength to voice theirs and as they do, they find members and groups

SHRED KELLY’S COLOUR RUN, A COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER FOR THE ARTS | NICK NAULT PHOTO in the community are right behind them, supporting, assisting and cheering them on. In the last eighteen months I have received the benefits of a number of individuals who have done just that: the beautiful Grace who founded FIRE to ensure everyone had the opportunity to partake in winter sports; Heather, who established WOW to provide an un-intimidating place for women to share good times on two wheels; Marlene, who opened the Castle’s doors as a place to inspire movement for all; Rachel and Tanya, who have made the Goddess Rising festival an annual event, as well as numerous other events and ventures that fill both mine and Fernie’s vibrant diary. The limitless imagination and entrepreneurialism has had a profound effect on me to stay true to my dreams and make them happen. Whilst living here I have worked in a number of different roles and participated in an even greater number of activities. One of the greatest gifts Fernie has given me is experiencing first-hand the complete integration of people of different ages. Whether it’s on the trails, at the gym, in the community garden, in life-drawing classes, in the park, by the river or at yoga, there is always the most wonderful rainbow of

ages present. Here, age is not viewed as a limitation (at either end of that rainbow) and there is a great respect between generations. Both of these values are not always common in the developed world and it has been a life lesson witnessing and being a part of it. One priceless experience and lesson that I will take from this magical place and cherish forever is the importance of presence. It’s all well and good reading and preaching about the need to stay present, but this is a practice and habit that is naturally normal amongst this community. There is an underlying rhythm dictated by the seasons, but each day and week can bring so much variety and surprise to everyone here. If the sun is out and the trails are dry, work is tidied up quickly that morning or can wait till the evening. Every opportunity is embraced and every day is received as a gift not to be wasted. Fernie, you are truly a special place. Your landscape and community are both inspiring and comforting as you continue to welcome new visitors and residents each season with un-faltered energy and kindness. Thank you, Claire Lewis

CARTER NIEUWESTEEG BIKER

Growing up in Fernie I’ve always had passion for outdoor activities, especially for mountain biking. Cycling has been a pretty big part of my life as riding the trails around Fernie seems like second nature. I’ve participated in a handful of sports like ski racing, soccer, and hockey, but cycling was the only sport that really stuck with me through all the years. Now, I’ve translated my love for the sport into racing, which has taken me to some pretty amazing places along the way. I’m very excited to see where I can go with cycling, and I’m thankful for everyone in the community who has helped me develop a passion for the sport, as well as succeed in it.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Since my involvement, cycling and the community has really morphed into one thing, as everyone is so passionate about the sport here. No matter where you look in Fernie there’s always something bike related. When I was younger there were no youth mountain bike programs like there are today. Not only has that changed but also the trail network. Fernie now has a labyrinth of trails in each part of the valley, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the community who maintains and expands them. It’s pretty special to see how cycling in Fernie has taken off not only on the trails, but within the community as a whole.

bonds between friends, family, and the rest of the community. Mountain biking in Fernie has been very important to Fernie, and it always will be. It’s great to see programs like The Fernie Flyers getting youth more involved in the sport of mountain biking at a young age. Furthermore, races like the Fernie 3 really showcase what Fernie has to offer, from its epic trails to its welcoming hospitality. I hope Fernie will continue to grow and expand the sport for many years to come.

I think one of the most valuable things a community can have is outdoor activities. They teach valuable life lessons, generate revenue for the community, and strengthen

HOW TO HAVE AN AMAZING SUMMER IN FERNIE

BY MISS SMITH’S GRADE 3 CLASS

SUBMITTED PHOTO

WE ASKED A GRADE 3 CLASS FROM ISABELLA DICKEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHAT THEY WOULD RECOMMEND VISITORS TO FERNIE DO WHILE HERE THIS SUMMER, AND HERE IS WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY. ››› “Make sure to buy tickets for Wapiti. It has live music and lots of food trucks from all over Fernie. While the kids play and dance, the adults can have a drink in the beer house!” Kye Tuggle

“Definitely go to the public library because it’s full of lots of interesting facts or instructions and it’ll fill your brain with knowledge. I suggest you try it out.” Danika Blais

“Do you need a place to park your trailer or set up your tent? Why don’t you try Fernie’s Provincial Park! The park has nice roads that you can bike on, walking paths, and beautiful unique trees surrounding the sites. Don’t worry about using your trailer bathroom or going in the wilderness, because the Provincial Park has nice quality bathroom facilities.” Jessi Melenka

“Are you tired of swimming inside? Well, you can get wet at the splash park at the Fernie Aquatic Centre! It is a fun place for kids because they can run around, going through the frog tunnel and get soaked by the dump buckets.” Dane DeMarchi

“Feel like shopping but not wanting to stay indoors? Try going to the Farmer’s Market! They have a variety of homemade wearable things and loads of organic food.” Deven MacGregor “Make sure you definitely go trail riding but always start easy before attempting a huge hard trail like Big Money.” Grace Simms “Don’t you ever get tired of having random things for supper like chicken wings, pizza or salad? Check out Yamagoya – one of only two places to get sushi in Fernie! Bring a group of five or ten friends at 5pm and grab a personal room and play a game of cards while waiting for your order at this awesome Japanese restaurant.” Maddox Johnson

“If you’re downtown on a hot summer day you should go to Beanpod and try their scrumptious gelato! If you’re like me and you like machines, peek into the window where you can watch the chocolates being made by the machines!” Parker Wallace “Go for a run along the dike. Running makes you feel so relieved when you’re done. And after, stop by Freshies for a steam milk and a tasty homemade chocolate chip cookie!” Ben Shopland “Try to find time to go and get active. There are plenty of fields to play sports like soccer and baseball. Fernie also has one of the best outdoor tennis courts, too! If you need any gear, check out the Gear Hub and they will fit you with anything you need.” Jesse Stull “Check out the ski hill and go for a hike, but make sure to look out for the bikers and be

loud for the bears. Also, try the Zip Line if you are not afraid of heights!” Jackson Hobbs “Definitely visit Happy Cow after a long bike ride and treat yourself to a magnificent Rocky Road ice cream. You can even get a puppy cone for your dog!” Lauralie Collins “Try fishing Kookanusa Lake or the Elk River with your papa. You can keep some fish but have to release the rest. I love sitting on rocks, it is so peaceful while you’re waiting for a fish to bite.” Nolan Mertz “Go check out Castle Rock. It is a great twohour hike or bike and when you reach the top, you can see the entire town of Fernie. ‘It’s beautiful up here.’” Carly Beck “You have to check out the skate park by the tracks. The skate park is awesome for shredding poles and doing jumps plus sometimes there is even a refreshing Gatorade stand.” Owen Hodge “Definitely stop by the Bridge Bistro for dinner. They have the very best grilled cheese and salads ever. My favourite thing about the Bistro is that you can sit outside and enjoy the pretty view of the river.” Ivy Atkinson “Make sure to go canoeing on Maiden Lake. It is very peaceful and if you are lucky you may see a deer, a moose or even an elk!” Sophia Wood PHOTO BY KYLE HAMILTON

A GUIDE TO TRAIL RUNNING IN FERNIE BY ABI MOORE, STAG LEAP RUNNING CO.

RAVEN EYE PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO

WELCOME TO SUMMERTIME IN FERNIE! REGARDLESS HOW HIGH YOUR WINTER STOKE GETS, NO ONE CAN DISAGREE THAT SUMMER’S ARRIVAL IS A WELCOME ONE. LONG DAYS AND CLEAR SKIES. COLD BEERS AND SUNDRENCHED DECKS. SINGLE TRACK AND TRAIL RUNNING. MATCHES MADE IN HEAVEN. AND SUMMER IN FERNIE OFFERS IT ALL. ››› The amazing network of trails found in, around, and high above Fernie, are popular with a large number of locals and visitors. With hundreds of trails, loops and routes, there are quite literally, endless opportunities to be found, by bike, hike or foot. But so many options, brings some tough decisions. It’s hard enough for a group of locals to make their mind up on where to go, but as a visitor to town, it’s overwhelming as to where to run – what elevation there’ll be, how long a loop will take, what terrain to expect and whether you’re in the path of a high-speed, high-traffic bike route! So, to help you find your feet, here are a few of our faves, which cater to a variety of levels, distances and desires… “Running” continued on next page

GREAT RIDES FOR EVERY LEVEL IN FERNIE BY KRISTA TURCASSO

FERNIE HAS BEEN KNOWN AS A MOUNTAIN BIKING MECCA FOR SOME TIME, BUT WHAT MANY DO NOT KNOW IS THE GROWTH OF TRAILS BEING DEVELOPED OR REVISED TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO THE YOUNGER COHORT OF RIDERS, OR THOSE NEW TO THE SPORT. ›››

LAZY LIZARD | MIKE MCPHEE PHOTO

The Fernie Trails Alliance along with its members, Island Lake Resort, the Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club, Fernie Alpine Resort and the Fernie Mountain Bike Club, have had an integral roll in this evolvement. While they regularly maintain the many intermediate to advanced trails, they have also been improving some trails and building new trails to round out what is on offer. Mountain biking increases in popularity with each year, and we think it’s amazing how approachable it is becoming for all ages, all interests and all levels. Here are a few trails that are fantastic to ride and provide great views, for every level of rider. Happy Trails.

LAZY LIZARD

Mount Fernie Provincial Park/Island Lake Distance: 14km out and back Level: Green/Blue Est. Time: 2-3 hours This trail is beautifully built, beginning at Island Lake’s lower parking lot and meandering along side the road with wooden bridges built at every creek crossing. When it reaches the steeper terrain, you’ll encounter gentle switchbacks and reach a beautiful

viewpoint overlooking the Old Growth Forest and Lizard Range. The trail takes you across the powerline, where you will continue to climb until you reach a gate at Island Lake Road. Ride the extra few minutes to reach a stunning patio at the Bear Lodge with much deserved snacks and refreshments, before enjoying how this trail rides on the way down. Ridden as both a climb and descent, riders are recommended to be aware of oncoming traffic in both directions.

Distance: 5km Level: Green/Blue Est. Time: 1-1.5 hours

The Montane sub division is now home to a network of trails, attracting snow and mountain bikers, trail runners, Nordic skiers and hikers all year round. During the summer months, this loop is enjoyed by all ages and levels as it gently climbs and descends throughout, with beautiful viewpoints, a warming hut mid-way, and some fun technical features to try like a teeter – totter. What is cool about how this network has developed, is that riders can choose to add to the loop, making it more difficult or longer.

When you’re up at Fernie Alpine Resort, and have either had your fill of lift-access riding or are looking for something to do while the kids are enjoying the downhill trails, Double Creek trail is a great option. A cross-country loop, with some short climbs and descents, it’s a quick loop that travels through dense forest, crossing a gravel road (used for Nordic skiing in winter) and coming back along the other side.

Castle Mountain

The trail starts at the old barn off Coal Creek Road, just off downtown Fernie. Cross the bridge, and take an immediate left. Typically this loop is ridden counter-clockwise, so follow the signs and as you go, you can stay “green” or choose some “blue” options. However you decide to ride the Montane loop, fun is sure to be had by all.

MOUNT FERNIE PROVINCIAL PARK Gorby – Old Goat – Happy Gilmore – Sherwoody – Gorby Distance: 5km Level: Green/Blue Est. Time: 1-2 hours Your trip is not complete without a ride in the Provincial Park. Especially on a hot day, these trails offer a beautiful canopy providing some protection from the hot rays of the sun. To begin this loop, pass through the Provincial Park campground, and continue on the gravel road until you see a parking area on the left near a metal bridge crossing Lizard Creek.

Fernie Alpine Resort

Access is at Parking Lot 4, just past the recycling and garbage bins. The trail ends just above the service grounds, where you will be able to get back onto the gravel road and make your way to where you started. It’s a quick loop, especially when you get to know the trail better. Consider doing a couple of laps if there is time.

To access Gorby, ride across the bridge and you’ll see the wide trail begin on you left. You’ll climb this until you reach the entrance to Old Goat on your left (look for the Goat and bench – you can’t miss it!). Old Goat is a fun climb through a beautiful forest, with some bridge crossings and technical roots. Before too long, you will reach the Happy Gilmore sign, and take a left. After a few metres, you will take another left for the deserved flowy descent of Happy Gilmore! At its end, take a left and continue until you reach a trail junction, and turn left back towards Gorby on Sherwoody. Once on Gorby, turn right towards the bridge.

Cemetery Bypass – Kiddy Up – Queen V – Eric’s Trail – Broken Hip

With its easy access from town and great views, Ridgemont has been a popular location for riders of all levels and ages. This quick and flowy loop has a little something for everyone. Cemetery Bypass begins at the entrance to the cemetery, and climbs until you reach an opening where you will continue along a gravel path. Continue until you reach Kiddy Up. This will take you to Ridgemont Road, where you will turn left and continue on Queen V. At the apex of this trail, take a left again and veer right on Eco Terrorist. You will get to a trail crossing, turn right onto the boardwalk section. At Ridgemont Road, take a left until you see Kid’s Stuff on your right. Follow this trail until Eric’s, which will eventually flow into a fun descent. Back at Ridgemont Road, take a right and climb until you reach Broken Hip on your left. It will lead you to the cemetery road, where you started.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOUR GOLF GAME BY MICHAEL VAN HORNE, CPGA HEAD PRO AT FGCC

A ROUND OF GOLF AT THE FERNIE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING WAY TO SPEND PART OF YOUR DAY. WITH BEAUTIFUL VIEWS, GOOD FRIENDS, A COUPLE OF COLD BEVERAGES, AND A GREAT CLUBHOUSE TO FINISH OFF THE EXPERIENCE, IT IS DEFINITELY A FERNIE MUST. Having said that, those of us who have dabbled with this sport know that the experience can turn frustrating pretty quickly. To prevent this from happening…or at the very least, make it a less frequent affair, take FGCC’s Head Pro’s advice and follow these five tips this golf season. ››› 1. Alignment: One of the biggest reasons golfers hit bad shots is poor alignment. The body and the swing path have to work together, if the body is aligned one direction and the club path in another it makes hitting good shots harder. Fix: Set up to the ball with your feet together and align the club behind the ball, facing towards your target. Move your feet to shoulder width apart keeping the club in the same position. This will help align our body and club path together. 2. Full swing at half pace: Making full swings at half pace always helps the body to get into the correct positions. This can be done with a wedge, 7 iron or driver.

It helps you to control the club better, and will result in making better shots. Once you have developed the control, you can start to swing faster though the impact area. 3. Putting: Putting may not be as fun as hitting drivers on the range, but putting can add up to half of your total score. If you spend half as much time on putting as you do hitting drivers, your scores will go down. When practicing putting, 90% of the practice should be with six foot putts or under. A good practice can be setting up tees in a rectangle shape with the ball inside. It will make you aware of the face of the putter, which direction it is facing and how that affects where the ball rolls.

4. Chipping: Just like putting, spending time practicing chipping will significantly improve your overall scores. Using the correct method in chipping will help get the ball closer to the hole, or even in. It’s important to have your hands lower on the grip, with your weight more on the lead foot (left foot for righties). Try to keep the left wrist flat throughout the chip. 5. Practice with Purpose: It’s okay to come down to the range and just hit balls, but if you plan on practicing make sure you come down with a game plan. Know what you want to work on and how you are going to do it. Having a game plan for practice will help on the course.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS WHEN PEOPLE PLAY AND WORK AS HARD AS THEY DO WHILE HERE OR IN ORDER TO GET HERE, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO FIND BALANCE. IT’S NOT SURPRISING THEN THAT ALONGSIDE THE PLENTIFUL RECREATION, YOU FIND COPIOUS NUMBER OF SERVICES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE TO UNWIND AND REJUVENATE. MARLENE VALE CASTLE ON FIRST

Variety is the spice of life – the way in which we move our bodies must be as varied as the seasons in Fernie. From outdoor pursuits to indoor recreation, health is not only measured by one’s athletic accomplishments but also an active and healthy lifestyle. To achieve this balanced approach to wellness as a Kinesiologist in Fernie, I strive to inspire all forms of movement in my clients as a method to achieve their healthy goals. This vision was the seed of the Castle on First – a space that inspires all forms of movement – from yoga and dance, fitness training and tai chi, there is something for everyone, all abilities, all ages, every day. I hope to accommodate an evolving approach to health and wellness at the Castle. For exercise to sustain our interest and adapt to our body’s needs, it is important to move in many ways. This idea is gaining momentum in an industry that at times favours pushing our bodies to extremes. While adrenaline sports maximize one’s physical ability, mindful exercise may help us live in ease and age with strength while discovering the potential of our body and mind. I hope this trend of attainable health and wellness continues to grow. I’d like to see all members of the community uncover their potential through movement. In order for this to happen, community programming needs to offer a wide spectrum of activities for all students to enjoy.

PHOTO BY LESLIE PRENTICE / CASTLE ON FIRST The Castle on First demonstrates how a community can begin a change in mind-sets. It took 16 passionate, innovative and caring leaders to spread this message of health and wellness beyond the Castle walls. As a team, our voices are strong, as alone I could not have created this inspiring space. When surrounded by the beauty of this valley, and all of the recreational opportunities it provides year round, it’s not surprising to find a great interest in health and wellness in Fernie. Not only is it an inspiring place to live, it continually makes us feel connected. Catching ourselves in the moment, and slowing down from our busy lives, being here helps us to recognize the value in finding balance. Whether through diet, exercise, meditation, or utilizing the plethora of health care professionals available to us.

SUMMER 2016 › HEALTH AND WELLNESS

SUMMER SPORTS INJURY PREVENTION BY BOB MAUDIE, FERNIE PHYSIOTHERAPY

With summer upon us, our amazing local trails, rivers, and lakes invite us to be active. Having worked as a Physiotherapist in Fernie for the past nine years, I frequently treat seasonal overuse injuries. Our proximity to awesome trails and beautiful waterways has created what I call the “Fernie” weekend warrior—someone who’s out there seven days a week. Regardless of how much you get out or your activity choice, it is essential to do some maintenance exercises to keep your body balanced and injury free. I have provided maintenance exercises for three of the most popular Fernie summer sports which lend themselves to overuse injuries.

RUNNING Running injury statistics are frightfully staggering: up to 70% of runners will sustain an injury in one calendar year, the majority of these being to the knees, ankles, and feet. 1. This usually comes down to three reasons: too much too soon, poor technique, and/or muscle imbalances. Typically runners are found stretching, rolling, massaging tight muscle on a daily basis just to keep going (you know who you are). This has its place for some individuals; however a lot of it can be avoided if they are strong enough. Two specific areas of weakness in runners are the glutes and the calves.

2.

Exercise 1: Skater Toe Taps are a strengthening exercise for your hips and mimics the landing phase of running. Pointers: keep your weight evenly balanced between your big and little toe while maintaining level hips and knee cap in line with your second toe. Perform 3 sets of 15 repetitions per side. Add weight to your shoulders with a barbell as you progress.

Exercise 2: Single Leg Calf Raise. Pointers: keep the front of your ankle pointing forward throughout the movement; this will evenly balance the work on both sides of the calf. Goal is 25 reps continuous per side before fatiguing. Start with 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

MOUNTAIN BIKING Fernie mountain bike trails are notorious for long sustained climbs. Inevitably the rider is in a posture of shortened hip flexors with a 1. rounded upper back. This is necessary to clean the climbs, and okay to do while riding uphill; however this prolonged posture leads to low back and neck pain. To help counteract this, here are two great exercises to maintain hip flexor length and spinal mobility.

DEANNA PEAKE AND NICK LECKENBY COAL TOWN GOODS

In the summer of 2014 Nick had just bought a Boler trailer and started her very successful Camp + Co brand of jewellery and handmade wallets, purses, scarves etc. that she was selling at the local markets in the Kootenays. At the same time, I had imported a line of clothing from Mexico, where I spend a good part of the winter, that I too planned on selling at the markets in the area. After a couple of years, and between hours of setting up and tearing down our market tents, Nick and I batted around the idea of opening up a permanent shop here in Fernie. We wanted a place where we could sell and showcase all the fabulous goods we had found over the years at these markets as well as create a space that felt personal and appealing to both Fernie locals and visitors. At the end of the summer a space off 2nd Ave. became available and at first we thought “We’re going to fit a store in here?” Nick already had the space transformed in her mind. With her eye for design and my eager attitude (and our husband’s many hours of labour) we transformed the small space into Coal Town Goods. In the few months that we have been open we have been overwhelmed by the community support, particularly by the other downtown merchants. We have been welcomed with open arms and feel humbled by the outpouring of support as we bumble

SUBMITTED PHOTO our way through the ins and outs of operating a small business. Coal Town Goods is located at 591b 2nd Ave. You will find handpicked often handcrafted mostly locally sourced jewellery, leather goods, art, apparel and other fabulous finds. Come in, we’re awesome! Q. The best place to take in a Fernie view… A. Dee: The bench on Castle Mountain or the Boat Launch looking upriver. Nick: Top of Polar Peak. Q. I unwind after a busy summer day by… Dee: A glass of red and BBQ with friends in the backyard. Nick: Hendrick’s G&T on the back deck with fam and friends.

Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie is… A. Dee: With my kids on our bikes. Nick: Bike posse-makes me feel like a kid again! Townie or mountain bike. Q. In my opinion, summer wins “Best Season” each year in the Fernie Fix Best of Fernie because… A. Dee: The days are long and lovely and because I’m not a winter backcountry person, summer is the time I spend exploring the mountains. Nick: Light is golden and long, activities are endless and people are out makin’ hay with big ol’ smiles on their faces. I love the buzz of summer!

A FASHION-FORWARD, SHANGRI-LA SUMMER BY JESSE BELL

JESSE BELL PHOTOS

SUMMER IN FERNIE IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER SEASON. EVERY MORNING YOU WAKE UP TO SUNSHINE AND TOWERING MOUNTAINTOPS, THE ELK RIVER MEANDERING BEAUTIFULLY THROUGH THE VALLEY, BIKE WHEELS TURNING ON EVERY STREET; IT IS A LITTLE SHANGRI-LA. AND TO ENSURE YOU MAXIMIZE EVERY DELIGHTFUL SECOND, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO CARRY ALONG WITH YOU. ››› Fortunately, despite Fernie’s rather small locality the town is a cornucopia of goodies and has a whole lot of style. Main Street is filled with unique, specialty items from unique, specialty shops and meets every adventurer’s need no matter how big or small the adventure may be.

that gatherings almost always turn into Blundstone parties. Find them at the Guides Hut and while you are there make sure you pick up the Fernie Mountain Bike Guide; the guide is a great way to familiarize yourself with one of Fernie’s favourite summer sports.

With that in mind, here is a list of things I think you might need this summer; useful and brilliant things that will leave you feeling like you did Fernie right. My favourite Fernie must-have during the summer months—or really, all year round—is a pair of Blundstone boots. These Australia-

made boots are so durable you can take them everywhere. They are fantastic for those short day hikes and evenings out and in Fernie they’ve become so popular

Another must-have is a hand-made leather wine caddy from leathersmith Holly Horses, available at the Fernie Arts Co-Op. Attach the caddy to your vintage Raleigh townie and then bike to the closest liquor store before cruising through town to your next evening bonfire. Just make sure you save the wine for your arrival, otherwise your bicycle route might feel a bit tipsy.

If you’re looking to stay hydrated on your days out, pick up a S’well water bottle from The Green Petal. These stainless steel bottles are perfect for a quick hydration fix on the go and the company’s intention to eliminate plastic water bottles makes this a guilt-free purchase. Another great on-the-go option is a Flightpath Mason Jar Mug from Coal Town Goods. It is a stylish alternative to throw-away coffee cups. Another hydration option for those seeking a savoury buzz is a 6-pack of Project 9 Pilsner from Fernie Brewing Co. Coupled with a fishing rod, a brisk P9 and your toes in the river casting flies makes for a perfect heat-beating eve. Slip on a pair of Havanas flip-flops from Commit afterwards for a comfortable walk home. If you are looking for a watery adventure head to the local Canadian Tire and purchase yourself a blow-up boat and hit the Elk River up for a day float. You are certain to make new friends on the water. Just be sure your boat is durable and keep an eye out for rocks and log jams, otherwise you might find yourself marooned on the riverbank, your tube deflated and sinking to its demise.

Also check out river paddle boards from Board Stiff and Gear Hub for a guaranteed unique float through town. A perfect pairing for those summer days and nights and perhaps the most versatile of clothing is a Fernie flannel and a vintage jean jacket or vest. Find Fernie flannels uptown at Elevation Showcase or head to Fernie Brewing Co. for one with an FBC logo. The local Salvation Army is also a great place SUBMITTED PHOTO

for vintage finds and Heaven Boutique almost always carries discounted denim. Following a big day of hiking a flannel is sometimes the only comfort you need. A light summer scarf from Freyja or No. 3 is also a great addition for those evenings sipping margaritas on a patio. Layering a colourfully-patterned scarf with a jean vest helps create some great texture and will warm you from the chill after dusk. Lastly, a trucker hat from Giv’r Shirt Works is perhaps the most versatile and useful musthave of the summer. These not only protect you from the sun on those long hikes, but also bids well with any number of outfits and all escapades. It will most certainly help you blend in at the Fernie Lion’s Demolition Derby on Labour Day weekend, the best finale to a superlative summer. Your jean vest couldn’t hurt, either. Whatever adventures you choose, you will most certainly be able to do them in convenience and style. Here’s hoping your Shangri-La summer in Fernie is one of the best.

JAROD MCGOWAN

LUNCHBOX FRESH MARKET I love the diversity of the food and beverage scene, having worked all aspects of the industry, including both front and back of house positions. I have always dreamt of owning my own establishment and found what I had been dreaming of with Lunchbox Fresh Market - a sustainable restaurant located in a close-knit community and a goto spot for locals and tourists. Fernie’s food scene made it a perfect spot to start off my life as a restaurateur and an ideal place to raise a young family. We find Fernie to be a warm, welcoming community and look forward to being able to contribute to the business sector with Lunchbox and becoming active members of the town. Fernie has so much to offer us as a family - both indoors and outdoors and we are excited about our new life here. Q. The best place to take in a Fernie view… A. As we have only been here since the beginning of February, I haven’t explored a lot, but love the view of the mountains. I have also discovered the off leash park with ErinRae, Nash and our dog, Harley, with its scenic view of the river.

on one of the many hiking trails that Fernie offers. Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie is… A. I’ve only been able to explore Fernie by either walking or driving, but of those two, so far my favourite is walking - whether it is downtown, in the parks or along the river. Q. In my opinion, summer wins “Best Season” each year in the Fernie Fix Best of Fernie because… A. I’ve heard nothing but high praise from the local residents, new friends I’ve met and existing friends that Fernie is incredible in the summer with the endless opportunity for enjoying all kinds of outdoor activities. I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to spend a summer here! As a family, we can’t wait to experience Fernie in all its glory. SUBMITTED PHOTO

SUMMER 2016 › FOOD AND DRINK

PATIO BEVERAGES IN FERNIE THIS SUMMER BY KRISTA TURCASSO

WHEN THE DAYS ARE LONG, WARM AND BEAUTIFUL, AND YOU HAVE 360 DEGREES OF CAPTIVATING VIEWS TO ENJOY, YOU WANT TO PROLONG YOUR TIME SPENT OUTSIDE. AT ALL COSTS. Fortunately, nearly every restaurant or café offers an outside space dedicated to this very pastime, along with tasty beverages to enjoy while you are at it. Here is a little tease of what is on offer, take the time to enjoy all establishments in the dining guide. The refreshment beverages and views are as diverse and lovely as the style of cuisine. Enjoy! ›››

MORNING

AFTERNOON

EVENING

Cappuccino on the patio at Loaf. Central in downtown Fernie, Loaf’s patio is on the sunny side of the street early morning with glorious views of the Lizard Range, making this smooth Kootenay Coffee Co. beverage taste that much sweeter. The coffee art adds to the experience.

Latte on the back patio at Freshies Café and Ice Bar. Get that afternoon pick me up with a Cowboy Coffee latte on the secret back patio at Freshies. This revised space now offers more room, more greenery and thus should be frequented more often.

A sunset pint of Fernie Brewing Co.’s P9 on the famed deck at the Bridge Bistro. Listen to the sounds of the trickling Elk River as you enjoy this crisp frothy beverage, with unprecedented views of Fernie Alpine Resort.

G$ Smoothie at Mug Shots. Coffee not your thing? Try out this private patio just off 2nd Ave across from the City Hall and enjoy this fresh, mango, banana, blueberry, yogurt, and guava juice concoction.

An espresso martini at Infinitea. Set alongside the historic Royal Hotel building in downtown Fernie, this is definitely our pick of their martinis when you are looking for a little perk.

Affogato at Beanpod. They may not offer a traditional patio, but I doubt you’ll regret this unique start to your day. House-made coffee gelato topped with a shot of espresso, spoon this delicious treat as you sit at one of their sidewalk tables and enjoy a little early morning people watching. Mimosa at The Blue Toque. Perhaps it’s a late start, after a late night and you need something to bring a little sparkle to your eye. Sipping this bubbly beverage on the patio of Ferne’s original train station is just the thing. You may even have front row seats for the next train coming through town.

A gin and tonic at The Clubhouse, Fernie Golf and Country Club. This patio’s panoramic view, chill atmosphere and a G&T sets the tone nicely for the remainder of your day and night.

The Geisha House at Island Lake Resort. Whether you hiked or biked to earn this extravagant white rum and Chambord beverage, or are spending the day or night at the resort, there’s no greater reward than sipping on this smooth and unique blend of flavours while up close and personal with the Lizard Range.

Little Havana at Nevados. Although this patio is situated on 2nd Ave, it feels nearly outof-the-way with its flora and wooden pergola, and this crisp, ‘daiquiriesque martini’ matches the setting perfectly. Geisha at Yamagoya. Another great location to catch the last rays of the day, and this sake cocktail’s colours and flavours accentuate the ambiance of the experience well. Warning… it could turn into two. Rose Coloured Glasses at Fernie Cattle Co. New this summer to Fernie Cattle Co. is their wine cocktail list, and this particular cocktail is a refreshing combination of Gewurztraminer, raspberry vodka, muddled raspberries, club soda and lime. Light and luscious.

SUMMER 2016 › WHERE TO STAY

DEB HOLLIDAY

Walker of the Elk River Alliance installed an interpretive sign. It’s so informative and well done.

My journey at Mount Fernie Park began many moons ago (1987). I clearly remember my first visit. I was so captivated by the lushness and diversity of the forest and vegetation. I thought it would be a great place to work and was so excited to be offered a position there by the Park Supervisor, who happened to be the lovely Patti Ohm. To this day I never take the beauty of it for granted.

I see the summer accommodation sector growing and getting busier. In particular we welcome the addition of the new Fernie RV Resort and wish them well. It will be nice to have somewhere else to send guests when we are at capacity. For Mount Fernie Provincial Park reservations, go to www. discovercamping.ca or call 1-800-689-9025. Have a safe and happy summer!

MOUNT FERNIE PROVINCIAL PARK

Q. The best place to take in a Fernie view…

When I first started, the park was kind of a hidden gem. You could almost always get a site mid-week and it was mostly one night visits with only a few returning guests. It continued that way for a few more years and then word spread and, lo and behold we were discovered! It has now evolved into a destination spot where folks book for their entire two-week vacation. I have had the pleasure of meeting interesting people from all over the world, some of whom have become great friends. I have also had many animal encounters over the years, with everything from pack rats to moose! The Park has become a mountain bike mecca, and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Fernie Trails Alliance and especially Luke and Henry for maintaining all of our trail system. We couldn’t do it without you! Lizard Creek Falls has also become a wedding hot spot (I believe we had eight weddings there last summer and fall) and recently, Lee-Anne

WHERE TO STAY FERNIE IS HOME TO A WIDE VARIETY OF ACCOMMODATIONS, OFFERING SOMETHING TO SUIT EVERY INDIVIDUAL OR GROUPS’ NEEDS. WHETHER YOU ARE A LARGE FAMILY, INTERESTED IN RENTING A PRIVATE HOME WITH ALL THE AMENITIES NESTLED IN THE MOUNTAINS, OR A COUPLE LOOKING FOR A HOTEL CLOSE TO TOWN, NEAR ALL THE SHOPPING, RESTAURANTS AND NIGHTLIFE, YOU’LL BE HAPPY WITH THE SELECTION AVAILABLE. FERNIE ALSO BOASTS A BEAUTIFUL CAMPGROUND IN OUR PROVINCIAL PARK, CONVENIENTLY LOCATED ALONG THE LIZARD CREEK, WITH BIKING AND HIKING TRAILS LITERALLY STEPS AWAY, AND NEW THIS YEAR THE FERNIE RV RESORT. REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU STAY, REMEMBER TO BOOK IN ADVANCE TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT.

A. The West Fernie bench on the Elk River looking at the Lizard Range up towards Cedar Valley and down valley towards Mt. Broadwood and the whole panorama. Q. I unwind after a busy summer day by… A. Going to the river with our dog Neko and a beverage. Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie is… A. On foot or on my townie. Q. In my opinion, summer wins “Best Season” each year in the Fernie Fix Best of Fernie because… STEVE MORRISON PHOTO

SUMMER 2016 › REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT

REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT LIKE MANY TOURIST DESTINATIONS, THE REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT SCENE IN FERNIE IS ALWAYS FLUCTUATING. NEW DEVELOPMENTS LIKE MONTANE, THE CEDARS AND ALPINE TRAILS PROVIDE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO BUILD IN BEAUTIFUL SETTINGS, WHILE RENOVATED HOMES AND CONDOS BOTH IN TOWN AND AT FERNIE ALPINE RESORT PROVIDE BUYERS WITH A TURN-KEY PROPERTY. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF RENOVATING A HOME, WITH OLDER HOMES, SOME REFERRED TO AS “MINER SHACKS” COMING ON THE MARKET. IT CONTINUES TO BE A BUSY SECTOR IN FERNIE, AND FOR GOOD REASON. TIME AND TIME AGAIN, PEOPLE COME FOR A SEASON AND THEN NEVER LEAVE.

MICK SOSNOWSKI

FOOTHILLS SILVACULTURE INC. I started Foothills in 2000. I was able to buy back on excavator from my dad after he retired from his sawmill business. There wasn’t much work for me in Fernie at first, so I worked at Island Lake Lodge and a few other places for a few years. I was able to get some work from people I knew and did them evenings and weekends. It was a bit tough at first as I didn’t have a reputation yet, but after a few years things started to change. In the years to follow, one excavator turned into eight. One trucked turned into three, and so on. Now the business has twenty-five pieces of equipment and that’s diversified into aggregate manufacturing and sales. It has been nice to work in the same town I grew up in and to be able to employ people from the Elk Valley has been the most gratifying experience for me. In the development industry, I provide equipment and aggregate to build the roads and finish the landscape. The best part of working with developers is it never gets boring. There are always changes especially near the end of the project to keep it on budget. Also, to drive by and see people and families starting their life on the same ground we helped to build. In the last few years there has been a realization that most families need attainable housing to raise their families and I think we have the perfect mix of attainable and highend development. I hope that in the future, the town can stay diversified for everyone who loves it here.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Operating a business and raising a family here is exciting because my two boys can come with me any day they choose. My brother and I never had that chance. If we wanted to go to work with Dad or Grandpa Mickey, they would have to cart us off to the sawmill or logging camp in Alberta. I’m very proud to be fourth generation in the valley and now my kids will be the fifth. All I can hope for is that my kids can have the same opportunity to stay in Fernie as well. Q. The best place to take in a Fernie view… A. Sneak up the backside of Polar Peak on our sled.

Q. I unwind after a busy summer day by… A. Driving out to the lake and taking in a ski and a swim. Q. My favourite way to explore Fernie is… A. My exploring is over now after being here for 36 years, but I find my enjoyment meeting and talking to the people travelling through or moving here. Seeing how excited they are to be in my community shows me we still have what we have always had – a warm, friendly, and safe community. Q. In my opinion, summer wins “Best Season” each year in the Fernie Fix Best of Fernie because… A. Summer wins Best Season for me because I can go to work to pay the bills.

LET SUMMER IN

Setting Plaster (231) Farrow & Ball

BY TARA HIGGINS

WITH BENJAMIN MOORE, ONE OF NORTH AMERICA’S LEADING PAINT RETAILERS, NAMING ‘SIMPLY WHITE’ AS THE COLOUR OF THE YEAR WHAT BETTER WAY TO SAY ‘HELLO’ TO SUMMER THAN WITH A SPLASH OF REAL COLOUR. NO MATTER YOUR PERSONALITY THERE IS A FRESH, INSPIRING COLOUR OUT THERE THAT CAN SNEAK INTO YOUR HOME WITH AS MUCH, OR AS LITTLE, COMMITMENT AS YOU FANCY. ›››

Cool Rain (5005-100) Valspar Paints

Juliet’s Potion (A0908) Dulux Paints Alt Deutsch pattern Wallpaper by Studio Job

Feeling Bold? Flash that confidence with a bright green such as ‘Juliet’s Potion’ from Dulux Paints. Would you like your Sophistication to shine through in your home décor? A beautiful soft pink is the ultimate statement of chic. Try Farrow and Ball’s ‘Setting Plaster.’

Remain Calm with ‘Cool Rain’ by Valspar. Do you know exactly who you are? Let a Brazen wallpaper speak your mind. The design gurus of Studio Job have created the ‘Alt Deutsch’ pattern in two colour ways and will always offer something to talk about.

HERE ARE FIVE OF MY FAVOURITE PLACES TO ADD A LITTLE SPLASH OF SASS AT HOME: The front door, the side door, and don’t forget garage door so you will feel greeted no matter which way you enter. The sofa. A tried and true place to mix things up with new throw pillows, all for the cost of the small change found in between the cushions. The littlest room in the house. The powder room is always a great place to try a new style. Do not be afraid of going big in this tiny room. An eclectic wallpaper can be the perfect gateway to let out your inner bohemian. You’ve heard of an accent wall? How about an accent stripe instead. Starting around 18 inches off the floor throw in a 24inch strip colour to your hall. Rarely do you have to worry about matching the furniture in this travel through area.

FERNIE TRAILS ALLIANCE AND FERNIE MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB

Happy Trails! Q. The best place to take in a Fernie view…

I moved to Fernie in the winter of 1997 after finishing another long season of forestry work in Northern Ontario. My plan was to spend a few months learning how to snowboard before having to return to the bush camps and black flies in early April. I immediately fell in love with this community, made a down payment on a house and suddenly was no longer “of no fixed address.” My passion for outdoor recreation and experience in the forestry industry made working with the Fernie Trails Alliance and Fernie Mountain Bike Club a natural fit. My main role with the FTA is to organize the volunteer trail maintenance work parties; for the FMBC I maintain the bike park and organize all of the children’s events. I am a Level 2 mountain bike coach and have recently started working with the FMBC, Fernie Flyers and College of the Rockies on youth mountain bike skill development programs. I have always believed that you set yourself up for a healthy balanced life when you are young. I hope that my work on the bike park, kids events and skill development programs

The long, warm days and the endless recreation options make summer superlative. It is easy to work a full day, go for a long ride, float the river then have a burger and beer on one of the many lovely patios. Fernie Trails Fernie’s extensive trail system spreads over the valley, on private land, Crown land and City property. Thankfully, with organizations such as the Fernie Trails & Ski Touring Club, the Fernie Mountain Bike Club and the Fernie Trails Alliance, important land-use agreements are in place to allow multi-use recreation on these trails, along with trail building, enhancement and maintenance.

Please respect the hard work and countless hours of many volunteers and the agreements in place. When using the Fernie trail network, try to leave as little evidence as possible of your journey. Take out what you brought in. Avoid trails when they are wet and saturated. Make noise and travel in a group to avoid animal encounters and to warn other recreationalists of your presence. Read signage and obey rules such as “Dogs on Leash” or “No Dogs Allowed.” And respect other recreationalists and landowners. For trail or route recommendations, visit www.ferniefix.com and look for the Fernie Fix top biking and hiking picks. For more information on trail descriptions, pick up a Fernie Mountain Bike Guide in town at Polar Peek Books & Treasures or at one of the sports shops, or peruse the following informative sites. Have fun, and play safe!

THREE HIKES AT FERNIE ALPINE RESORT SUMMER ROAD - TRAIL # 10 Difficulty: Easy technical trail with strenuous uphill Lift: Elk Chair Time: 2- 4 hours

POLAR PEAK - TRAIL #28 Difficulty: Advanced Lift: Timber Chair Time: 3.5 - 7 hours

LOST BOYS TRAILS - TRAIL #29 Difficulty: Easy Lift: Timber Chair Time: 45mins - 1.5 hours

The Summer Road Trail begins at the top of the Elk Chair. Winding through the Lizard Bowl via switchbacks, the ascent is quite easy with no steep ascents - just a constant uphill to the top of the Boomerang Chair and the Bear Chair.

The Polar Peak Trail follows the Lost Boys Trail out to the Lookout. From here it turns right and follows the Lizards Range crest all the way around to Polar Peak. The trail offers spectacular views for the entire trip. At 2100 metres, Polar Peak provides a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding area. From Polar Peak, return to the saddle between Currie Headwall and Polar Peak and follow the trail back to the Hut at the Top of Whitepass Chair. Return to the Timber Chair to download or take the Timber Trek to the base.

The Lost Boys Lookout and Lost Boys Loop Trails offer an easy walk through the alpine meadows. The Lost Boys Pass Lookout is an easy 0.75 km walk from the top of the Timber Chair to the west. With a vertical gain of only 80m this walk is suited for youngsters as well as adults. The Lost Boys Loop is a trail that goes out to the Lost Boys Lookout then descends through the alpine to the Mammoth Droppings to an interesting area of giant boulders below the Mammoth Peak. The Loop is 1.7 km with a vertical climb of about 100m. The trail is an easy walk and suitable for children.

Once you reach the top of the Bear Chair you can choose to return on the trail you came up on, or you can turn left and go south across Lizard Bowl about ½ km to a trail descending between Cruiser and Dancer. This part of the trail is all limestone and contains many fossils of horn corals, tabulate corals and crinoids.
