SUMMER 2017 › WELCOME Fernie is often known as a ski town turned yearround recreational destination. Not twenty years ago, summer was a very quiet time here. If you found yourself downtown on a weekend, you might only pass a couple of people (whom you would obviously know well) and find most shops, cafés and restaurants closed. And speaking of these establishments, they were few and far between. If you’ve spent any amount of time in Fernie’s core over the last few years, you might find this hard to believe. Especially during summer.

WELCOME TO FERNIE, BC

Summer has quickly become the busiest season in Fernie, for many reasons. First and foremost, it is gorgeous this time of year. The mountainside is vibrant with colour, changing month to month and offsetting the bluest of skies. As the sun sets, the effect becomes even more dramatic until eventually, the mountains seemingly become black cut outs of the sky. So while many were originally lured here for its legendary champagne powder, once they experienced a Fernie summer they either never left or became regular summertime visitors.

With more people visiting this time of year came an influx of activities. Mountain biking was already gaining momentum, with events like the Mud N Madness held at the Ski Hill, and groups like the WOMBAT (Women On Mountain Bikes And Tea) forming. But interest in this sport began to rise exponentially, and has not stopped since. The Fernie Trails Alliance formed, as the umbrella organization for member groups including the Fernie Mountain Bike Club, Fernie Nordic Society, Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club, and Island Lake Lodge, to help manage, enhance and maintain Fernie’s expansive trail network. As mountain biking took Fernie by storm, other recreational activities followed. Hiking has always been a popular pastime here, with numerous mountains surrounding our borders, tempting us with their magnitude. In recent years, many are testing their endurance by running these same routes! Water sports have been abundant, with rivers and lakes crossing our paths numerous times both in town and just beyond, but as you’ll learn through this guide have further developed and continue to push the envelope. Golfing, tennis, soccer, climbing, road cycling… when spending a weekend in Fernie, the possibilities and equipment to pack are truly endless. Mountain towns with a plethora of recreational opportunities are a dime a dozen, and while I would argue that we have some of the best terrain offered worldwide, there is one element to Fernie that truly sets it apart. MATT KUHN PHOTO this mountain town end up with such iconic buildings at its centre? William Fernie, alongside Colonel James Baker, was the driving force behind the coal mines located here. Starting in 1887, for ten years they struggled to raise the money necessary to build not only the mines but also the railway needed to transport the coal to the outside world. Finally in 1897 they achieved their goals, though effectively losing control of the company to eastern interests. With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1898, the production of coal in the Elk Valley began in earnest and the new town of Fernie took shape. The construction generated the development of sawmills, hardware stores, blacksmith shops and other suppliers, but two fires ravaged the early community. In 1904, Fernie’s commercial district was destroyed, which led to the formation of the Fernie Fire Department and the incorporation of Fernie as a city. Four years later, on August 1, 1908, the entire community was reduced to smouldering ashes. The resulting reconstruction dramatically transformed the landscape as the city council were firm that all buildings within a ten-block section were

to be constructed of fireproof material. The architectural style is characterized by the three storey, flat-roofed brick buildings, many adorned with round-arched and rectangular windows, hood mouldings or classical pediments and plasters. It’s wonderful to see these buildings full of life today, many restored beautifully and home to successful businesses, new and old.

INTERESTING SUMMER FACTS Location: Southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, fully encircled by the Canadian Rockies. Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders. Population: 5,249 permanent residents with over 2,000 outside city limits and a substantial seasonal population. Temperature: Average high in degrees Celsius is 19.9 in May, 20.6 in June, 25.1 in July, 25.1 in August and 19.3 in September.

So while here this summer, you undoubtedly will enjoy the activities and events you take in. But don’t forget to dive into Fernie’s rich history, which has had a huge impact on the year-round mountain town it is known for today.

Trail Network: There are over 300km of trails in and around Fernie, along with an additional 36 trails plus at Fernie Alpine Resort. New trails being built this year include the anticipated Flow Trail.

The Fernie Museum offers a permanent exhibit highlighting the story of Fernie from the discovery of coal to today’s community. Temporary exhibits and programming highlight some of the unique stories that have shaped Fernie as we see it today. The Lake District: Just 30 minutes west of Fernie, approximately ten lakes to visit on a hot day including the well-known Koocanusa.

The Ghostrider: Fernie is known for its legends, and summer is a great time to check out the Ghostrider on Mt. Hosmer, revealing a distinctive horse and rider rumoured to be the ghost of an angry Indian Chief and his daughter pursuing Wiliam Fernie. Festivals: Fernie hosts the popular Wapiti Music Festival and Bibbity Bobbity Boo Children’s Festival in August, the Gillbilly Fest and Fernie Chautauqua and Fall Fair in September, and a host of one-day events and festivals throughout the summer. Every year, another activity is added to the anthology of recreational offerings in Fernie. It’s remarkable, even to those of us who have been playing here for what feels like eons. And not only is this sector growing - it’s evolving. Continually being improved upon. Fernie is passionate about its pastimes, and it shows.

CAROLINE VILLENEUVE WAKE SURFER

After first visiting Fernie in 2005 during a winter vacation, I became hooked. Coming back a little bit longer every time, then spending the entire winter in Fernie and returning home to Quebec in the summer before taking the plunge and moving here full time. I started to wakeboard in my early twenties and did a few competitions in Quebec and Ontario. I discovered wakesurfing in 2007 and I started to compete that same year, pushing myself to the top of the podium from the following year on. I’m not going to lie, the sport was so new then, that you didn’t need to be that talented to win. My first competition outside Canada in 2009 brought uncertainty about my skill level, but bringing home the gold medal motivated and inspired me to push myself further. It was actually right after that event that I finally moved here. I have been living in Elko with my boyfriend (Ben Stokie) since then. In 2011, I finally realized my dream, with Ben’s help, and opened H2O School Ltd. Since opening, we have coached nearly 1000 people in wakesurfing and love every little bit of it! It’s now been 12 years since I finished my Kinesiology studies and roughly ten years since I first surfed behind a boat, and I never thought it would bring me where I am today. In addition to running H2O School, I’ve been coaching in six different countries, organized and judged several competitions and I’ve been pretty successful as an athlete. I stood on the podium 51 times in the 55 competitions I participated in (including 31 gold medals) and I’ve also placed in the top three at the World WakeSurfing Championship for the past six years. My two biggest accomplishments both happened

DON’T WORRY IT’S NOT YOU - GOLF IS HARD. EVERYONE WAS A BEGINNER AT ONE TIME AND GETTING STARTED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TOWARDS GETTING WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. HERE ARE A FEW TIPS FOR GETTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT. ›››

1. Try a Lesson

3. Practice, Practice, Practice

Here at the Fernie Golf and Country Club we offer multiple lessons and programs for all levels of golfers. We can help if it’s your first time out or if you’re trying to dial in a swing change. If you are looking at taking up the game, a group lesson is a great way to learn the basics. If you have a few family members or friends that are interested at the same time then consider setting up a lesson for your group. Otherwise if you like doing things yourself, private lessons throughout the summer might be your best option.

Practicing isn’t always the most exciting part of golf but it can definitely lower your score. Short game practice - like chipping and putting - will make a bigger difference than hitting your driver as hard as possible. Start with short shots and work your way up. When you are practicing your full swing, swinging at 70% to 80% of your maximum can help things fall in line as opposed to you falling over. At the Fernie Golf Course we have a great driving range and practice green and we have clubs to borrow free of charge for practicing if you don’t have your own.

2. Get a Grip A proper grip is vital to making a great golf swing. Keys to keep in mind: 1) Make sure you can see the first two knuckles of your top hand. 2) The crease made in your lower hand’s palm fits over your top hand’s thumb. 3) Always use light grip pressure. 4) If you are wearing out your glove quickly or your hands are sore, something probably isn’t right. 4. On the Course When you first get out on the course choose a slower time. This will ease the pressure of other groups around you and will usually involve a lower green fee. Twilight in Fernie is perfect. There are five sets of tees at the Fernie Golf Course and we suggest starting with the Green or Gold tees, ask our friendly staff in the pro shop for some advice before you head out. Once you get onto the fairway don’t be afraid to tee the ball up again. You shouldn’t have to play by the rules all of the time. If it’s still frustrating just pick that ball up and throw it at the hole, or over the water,

or out of the sand. This also works if you’re getting behind the pace of play. One hole shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes from the tee to the hole. If putting gets to you, invoke the three putt rule. Maybe rent a power cart if that makes the round more exciting, but remember the recommendations of the pro shop staff as to where the cart is allowed. Lastly, golf attire doesn’t have to be formal, we just ask that it’s clean, neat and most importantly, comfortable.

5. Après Golf Remember golf should be fun. Just like a great day skiing or biking, head up to the Clubhouse for some great post round drinks and snacks. Reminisce with your playing partners about the great shots, the not so great shots and the shots that weren’t meant to be. The most important part of playing golf is to have a good time and keep it light, golf shouldn’t be like work and it doesn’t have to be serious. Come down to the course with an optimistic attitude and what’s the worst that can happen? You’ll end up having a great walk outdoors with some good people.

People often relate Fernie in the summer time to mountain biking, hiking and fishing. Tennis offers a balance to these activities. Whether you have a half an hour or three, there is no limit to the time you can play. We have the most scenic courts in Western Canada, according to some locals. The courts were resurfaced four years ago and are in excellent condition. They are located in the James White Park. You can play singles, doubles, with your kids, for fun, or competitively. There is no limit to where you can take the game and it’s quickly becoming a lifestyle. Whether you have a lot of experience or have never picked up a racquet, tennis is a well-rounded sport with many benefits. It has been stated that tennis is the best overall body workout there is. Other benefits include improved hand eye coordination, aerobic and anaerobic fitness, and above all, mental

--I tackled Fisher Peak (9,336 ft, 10 kilometres) with six girlfriends four years ago. Rumours were that the hike was gruelling; a steep 4,400-foot elevation gain with little respite in the way of flat ground.

The trail begins at Mause Creek Rd. and leads up a steep forested slope. Switchbacks open to a rock garden, the shrill chirps of marmots echoing in the valley. Then a quiet pool of water offers brief serenity before the second portion of the hike comes into view. At the back of the bowl there is a col in the mountain, preceded by a scree chute. Hikers must navigate the chute and prepare to slip with each step. It helps to have friends for hikes like this, friends who encourage one another to keep going. “Mountain Magic” continued on next page

PHOTO: MT. PROCTOR HIKE When we reach the col the crystal-blue Nichols Lake comes into view, a glittering gem tucked between two peaks. Hidden mountain lakes have always been something that, as a hiker, I feel privy to; enchanting little secrets meant only for the eyes of adventurers. The last 200 feet is the most technical. Don’t attempt to ascend on the northwest side; instead stick to the ridge and look for four yellow markers spray painted on the rocks. When we reach the summit it is easy to understand why Fisher is so paramount; we stand on top of a giant rock, sudden queens of the East Kootenays. --On a morning in mid-July in the summer of 2016, friends and I summited the seemingly unsummitable Crowsnest Mountain (9,137 feet, 8 kilometres). From Hwy 3 it would appear that its layers of scree slopes and limestone cliffs aren’t navigable, but a route does exist. Alison Creek Rd. leads to the trailhead and a wooded walk quickly falls way to scree scramble. An old sign, weathered from years of that infamous Crowsnest wind, points at the difficult route—the only route—straight up

past the first headwall, then a traverse below the second headwall to an obvious gully. The gully is hazardous and constant awareness of sudden rock fall is mandatory. The narrow draw leads to the crux of the scramble—a sheer slab of rock with only a rusted metal chain for control. A few of our group turn around at this point, but six of us continue on. Past the crux it is a moderate scree ascent to the summit. At the top there is a true feel for how the mountains meet the prairies, smooth grassland colliding with saw tooth pinnacles. My friend Helena and I can’t stop smiling, both so happy to have summited. --A few days after Crowsnest, I decide to hike Proctor Mountain (7,851 feet, 12 kilometres) with my partner. Though not nearly as high in elevation, Proctor is a guardian over Fernie; it has always left me curious. The Proctor loop begins at the Chamber of Commerce up Swine Flu trail, through shadowed forest and then along rocky ridgeline. It is long, at times difficult to navigate, but entirely worth it. As we climb, our sunny day dims with a looming thunderstorm. We hunker down

in a hollow and wait out the rain. Once it tapers, we cut across the mountain and the trail opens up to a high-alpine meadow. Red Indian Paintbrushes and other wildflowers colour the landscape. The trail weaves in and out of jagged rock to the true summit of Proctor, marked by a wooden post and a tattered Canadian flag. From here, hikers can either turn around or carry on the loop between the backside of Proctor and the Three Sisters. The trail disappears for a while, and hikers should stay relatively left of the valley as they descend. Keep an eye out for signs of flagging and cairns (rock stacks). Eventually the route reappears, walking alongside Fairy Creek back to the trailhead. By now I feel the all-too-familiar ache in my feet; the dread of the last kilometres, and that punishing length Proctor is famous for. There is also the joy at having just hiked another mountain. --No matter the time or place, the height of cliff face, there is certainly magic in the mountains. I hope you seek to find it.

A popular spot in the summer, it provides cliff jumping, lake lounging and beautiful navy blue water. The overlook is a different approach, finishing with a panoramic of all three lakes and surrounding mountains, including Mount Broadwood. This trail is within the Wigwam Flats–Mount Broadwood Conservation Area managed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in partnership with Ministry of Environment for wildlife protection. Begin your adventure by driving 20 minutes west of Fernie to the town of Elko.

Immediately after the bridge on Highway #3, take a left into the town of Elko, following the road through the residential area. On your left a dirt road named River Road will lead you down and onto a bridge over the Elk River. Park immediately after the bridge on the right. Hike south past the gate, following the road as it hugs the river, gaining elevation over the local sawmill and hydro dam. At 2.3km you’ll leave the gravel road and turn left (east) onto a worn trail heading uphill. At the top, take the right fork in the trail into the tall grass marked with ribbons. Continue for another km as it brings you uphill, through Douglas Fir and open meadows, then turn left onto a tiny path leading to the overlook.

Arriving at the top, you’ll be standing 500ft over the third lake with gorgeous rock cliffs supporting trees and various plant life. The path leads to various viewpoints along the cliffs.

Matheson Falls Water provides lush greenery and there’s definitely an abundance of it in the Elk Valley. If you’re looking for a short but gratifying backcountry walk, then Matheson is the way to go. Since you’ll be driving a logging road, a 4x4 is recommended especially at the beginning of spring/summer. Head onto Coal Creek

The trail will be on your right after you cross the bridge. Passing through a forest alongside the flowing creek, this walk can have its challenges. In May with the runoff, the water

levels require you to be creative… walking through knee-deep water as you navigate rocks. After the runoff has ceased, you’ll still have to do some navigating as you cross from one side of the creek to the other.

trees, wildflowers, mountain peaks through the trees and if you’re lucky, maybe even a moose! Once you arrive at the lodge, begin this 4km hike on the trail just below the Bear Lodge.

After roughly 1.5km you’ll reach a small but beautiful waterfall cascading down rocks, often creating a nice swimming hole in the summer months. A beautiful spot to enjoy Mother Nature’s creation.

Heading east follow the signs for the Tamarack Trail, which take you through dense forests and a flowing creek. After crossing under the powerline, you’ll head back in the forest and begin walking up through a large rockslide. At the top of the rocks enjoy views of the Rockies to the west and the town of Fernie below. The trail continues, descending slightly until you reach a staircase. Take the staircase and follow the trail to the viewpoint.

Tamarack Viewpoint If you’re looking for unparalleled views of the Lizard Range and the Rockies, then add Tamarack Viewpoint to your list. Heading west out of Fernie, take the Fernie Provincial Park road. Follow the paved road through the park, continuing onto a gravel road. Located in 7,000 acres of pristine wilderness, this 8km drive up a windy road showcases 800 year old Cedar

The Montane sub division is now home to a network of trails, attracting snow and mountain bikers, trail runners, Nordic skiers and hikers all year round. During the summer months, this loop is enjoyed by all ages and levels as it gently climbs and descends throughout, with beautiful viewpoints, a warming hut mid-way, and some fun technical features to try like a teeter – totter. What is cool about how this network has developed, is that riders can choose to add to the loop, making it more difficult or longer.

When you’re up at Fernie Alpine Resort, and have either had your fill of lift-access riding or are looking for something to do while the kids are enjoying the downhill trails, Double Creek trail is a great option. A cross-country loop, with some short climbs and descents, it’s a quick loop that travels through dense forest, crossing a gravel road (used for Nordic skiing in winter) and coming back along the other side.

Castle Mountain

The trail starts at the old barn off Coal Creek Road, just off downtown Fernie. Cross the bridge, and take an immediate left. Typically this loop is ridden counter-clockwise, so follow the signs and as you go, you can stay “green” or choose some “blue” options. However you decide to ride the Montane loop, fun is sure to be had by all.

Fernie Alpine Resort

Access is at Parking Lot 4, just past the recycling and garbage bins. The trail ends just above the service grounds, where you will be able to get back onto the gravel road and make your way to where you started. It’s a quick loop, especially when you get to know the trail better. Consider doing a couple of laps if there is time.

Mount Fernie Provincial Park/Island Lake Distance: 14km out and back Level: Green/Blue Est. Time: 2-3 hours With the addition of the lower section connector trail built last summer, Lazy Lizard now starts at the Fernie Provincial Park campsite at the bottom of Stove Trail. It is a beautifully built trail as it meanders along side the road with wooden bridges built at every creek crossing. When it reaches the steeper terrain, you’ll encounter gentle switchbacks and reach a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the Old Growth Forest and Lizard Range. The trail takes you across the powerline, where you will continue to climb until you reach a gate at Island Lake Road. Ride the extra few minutes to reach a stunning patio at the Bear Lodge with much deserved snacks and refreshments, before enjoying how this trail rides on the way down. Ridden as both a climb and descent, riders are recommended to be aware of oncoming traffic in both directions.

FOLLOWING ITS LAUNCH IN JUNE 2016, THE POPULAR FERNIE BREWING CO. TRAIL TO ALE CHALLENGE IS BACK! THIS FUN MOUNTAIN AND BEER FILLED ADVENTURE CHALLENGES BOTH FERNIE LOCALS AND VISITORS, WITH AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF ENJOYING SOME OF FERNIE’S FINEST TRAILS, BY BIKE OR FOOT. ››› The Fernie Brewing Co. Trail to Ale Challenge consists of bagging three peaks, within a 24hr period. Open to bikers, runners or hikers, challengers must reach the top of Hyper Ventilation, Project 9 and Swine Flu, in any order, within the time limit. Of course, any good challenge reaps reward. Challengers must first ‘prove it’ with timestamped selfies next to the Trail to Ale ontrail signage, located at the top of each of the three climbs, as well as out at Fernie Brewing Co. at the finish. Once the four pieces of photographic evidence have been shown to FBC’s Tasting Room staff, challengers will be rewarded with a cold beer and a Fernie Brewing Co. medal. The purchase of salty nuts and additional beers, are optional. The challenge is open to anyone, at any time and challenges may start from wherever they wish. Smart planning of course would be to ensure that finish line glory coincides with the Brewery being open – to ensure the cold,

crisp, craft-brewed reward can be enjoyed on the spot. Be sure to check FBC’s current opening hours online before you start - to avoid a potentially very disappointing end to one of your best days on the Fernie trails! For further glory, challengers can share their adventure along the way, using #‎trailtoalefernie @ferniebrewingco. Or if going that bit harder, and simply finishing alone is not quite enough, challengers can ‘prove it’ on Strava, to see how they rank amongst the best of the best. The trails can be accomplished in any order, but bikers and runners must bike or run from one trail to the next – if hiking, you can drive to the respective trailheads. With a total distance of anywhere between 40-50km, depending on chosen route, and over 1,200m climbing, a tough day on the trails awaits. However, the views, cold beer, medal and glory, is worth every stroke or step.

I AM CARO VILLENEUVE, I AM A WAKESURF ADDICT AND MY HAPPY PLACE IS BEHIND MY BOAT! ››› CHRIS BANK PHOTO Not to be confused with wakeboarding, wakesurfing is a water sport in which riders surf the wake behind a boat unsupported, using a towrope only to get to their feet before releasing it as they ride freely on the endless wake created by the vessel. I’ve seen this sport progress exponentially over the past ten years. It’s amazing to see the improvement in the boats, the equipment and definitely in the riders’ skills. The first step to a having a positive wakesurf experience is to have the proper tools. Starting with a good wake, the proper equipment and when possible, good instruction. The Wake: The better the wake, the easier it will be for you to learn. Each boat is different, but they all have an optimal wake for its capacity. Knowing how to set your wake including the components to consider will make your experience much better. Depending on the make and model of the boat, you can adjust the wake by playing with the trim tab, the repartition of the weight, the CATS fin, the “Quick Surf” tabs or other similar options. If taking lessons, you have the choice of using the school’s boat, which

will likely offer more powerful and adjustable surf, or request they come onto your boat, helping you make the best wake possible with the tools you have! The Equipment: First and foremost, the most important piece of equipment is a lifejacket. You never know what is going to happen, so wear one at all times. In the competitive world, wakesurf boards are split into two main categories: Surf and Skim. The surf style board has good flotation and big fins, which create a lot of traction and make it feel a little more like riding the ocean. When thinking of “surf style,” we think of big slashes, bottom turns, huge air and aerial tricks. It doesn’t mean you can’t do tricks like shuv-it or big spins, but several factors will make those tricks harder to execute. The skim style board, which is smaller and has smaller fins (or no fin) is designed to perform more technical tricks. You still can enjoy some good turns and slashes, but you won’t get the amplitude you would get with a surf style board. Good Instruction: Clients we’ve had the pleasure of teaching have said that they’ve tried wakesurfing several times before but

couldn’t do it and that they were amazed to see how quick and simple it actually was with the right instruction. A Challenge: After realizing that there wasn’t a Canadian event in the World Series of WakeSurfing (WSOWS), we sought out the help of a few local enthusiasts and together were able to form the Rocky Mountain WakeSurfing Association (RMWA), a nonprofit organization designed to help promote wakesurfing in our communities. Soon after, we organized the first Canadian event as part of the WSOWS, named The Koocanusa WakeSurf Challenge (KWC). The KWC has since become a favourite summer event, providing an opportunity for people of our community to either compete, or simply watch. All ages and skill levels are invited to compete, with several divisions to choose from. You don’t have to be a pro to compete. RAFTING IN THE FERNIE AREA

WE ARE BLESSED WITH TWO GREAT WHITEWATER RIVERS IN THE FERNIE AREA – THE ELK RIVER CANYON AND THE BULL RIVER. FOR A MORE RELAXED TRIP, HALF DAY FLOATS ON THE UPPER ELK RIVER ARE ALSO AVAILABLE, PROVIDING A SCENIC FLOAT CLOSE TO TOWN SURROUNDED BY THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. The Elk River Canyon is a classic river run that has it all - exciting rapids, wilderness setting, and outstanding scenery all while floating through a vast canyon. It is a large volume class III - IV stretch of river with the intensity of the rapids varying with the change in water levels. With May and June comes the spring snow melt and rains offering the biggest waves and most powerful rapids. In July and August, the water levels start to drop and the river is great for first time rafters and families with adventurous children over eight years of age. The Bull River is a classic mountain river. It starts out slow and the excitement builds as the river drops towards the lower Bull Canyon. This stretch is available with high to medium water levels through May and June.

Surrounded by beautiful wilderness, the Elk River Canyon and Bull Rivers are class III – IV whitewater rivers depending on the water levels. In May and June rapids are at their biggest and most powerful. The Bull River is a small volume river so the rafting is only available with high to medium water levels during this time. The Elk River Canyon is a large volume river so it always has great rapids to run throughout the spring and summer. A trip down the river is a unique way to experience Fernie and its surrounding area. It’s always great to get a fresh perspective. Summer activities are anchored between gnarly and flowing mountain bike singletrack trails and remote backcountry hiking. Growing in popularity is world-class fly-fishing and cool, clear Elk River adventures.

The Elk River Alliance (ERA), our local watershed group, is producing and selling the Elk River Map Guide to promote safe public access to the Elk River and encourage sustainable practices that keep it ‘drinkable, fishable and swimmable for future generations.’ Available for $10 throughout the entire Elk Valley starting June 15 (the day fishing opens on the Elk), this first-of-its-kind Map Guide will provide practical information on how to safely enjoy the river from a variety of recreational perspectives, as well as promote the natural and cultural heritage of the river. An additional activity with the Map Guide is the geocache. This healthy activity is a blend of electronics, outdoor play and treasure hunting that will take participants to interesting geological and historical places in the Elk River watershed. Visiting the twelve geocaches from the headwaters to the mouth will help visitors develop a sense of place and values associated with the Elk River watershed. HEALTH AND WELLNESS We often hear, “Go hard, or go home” when it comes to some of the activities and sports enjoyed in Fernie. And yes, if you’re here for a weekend this might be a fitting anthem to your time spent here. Nevertheless, consider including a little respite to the mix. Self-care goes a long way when physically pushing ourselves regularly. Fortunately, there are many options to choose from. You just might need to extend your stay.

SUMMIT MASSAGE THERAPY In December 2000 myself and a co-worker were snowmobiling down from work at Island Lake Lodge. Next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital with a concussion, whiplash and pain in my shoulder. We had gone off the road and crashed the snowmobile. This led me to my first experience with massage therapy and its therapeutic benefits. After multiple treatments of my neck and shoulder I had made a full recovery. This sparked my interest in massage and its positive effects, not only for relaxation purposes but in recovery. In the Fall of 2002 I completed a 250hr relaxation massage course in Calgary, and gained hands-on experience over the next few years working at Lizard Creek Lodge and Island Lake Lodge. During that time my husband and I welcomed two kids as I continued to work part time. In 2008 I went back to school to complete a 2200hr Massage Therapy course in Calgary. After opening Summit Massage Therapy in 2012 and with both our kids now in school, I successfully challenged the BC Massage Therapy board exams in 2014. Since that time, I have been fortunate to have supportive clientele who allow me to have a career that keeps me engaged mentally and physically. Fernie is a town full of people of all ages that choose to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Whether it’s living pain-free, reducing stress, creating life/work balance, running a marathon or gardening they are all equally important goals. TRY THESE DIETICIAN-APPROVED TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY, HYDRATED AND ACTIVE DURING SUMMER ENDURANCE ACTIVITIES. Summer is a time when many of us take the longer days and warmer temperatures to spend more time outdoors. In Fernie, there’s no lack of activities to keep us busy including hiking the Three Sisters, biking down Sidewinder or for the brave souls – training for your first triathlon. Inadvertently, this often leads us to spending more time exercising in the endurance, or aerobic activity zone. Not sure how to prepare for your next sweaty race? Follow these easy guidelines to fuel for success.

Before What you eat before training is key to feeling strong during your workout. Try to eat about two to three hours before exercise with an easy to digest carbohydrate snack such as fruit, grains and starchy veggies like sweet potato. Carbohydrates provide glucose to your working brain and muscles to keep you feeling energized. It’s also important your snack is low in fat and fibre, which are slowly digested, and can cause an upset stomach. Some great choices are oatmeal and banana, or quinoa and grilled chicken. It’s equally important not to forget about water here, especially during the summer months when staying well hydrated can be difficult - sip on one to two cups of water in the hour before your workout.

During Never given too much thought to what to eat during exercise? Well that’s probably because for exercise less than an hour, water works perfectly well to keep you hydrated – aim for about three to four large gulps of water every 20 minutes. If you’re heading into longer events or activities such as half marathons or a big ride, try to have 30 – 60 grams of carbohydrates every hour. Simple carbs are key here to quickly get energy where it’s needed; such as sports drinks, dried fruits or energy gels.

After Do you really need a snack or meal after working out? Re-fuelling after exercise is most important for two groups of athletes: If you regularly exercise two days in a row, or more than once a day. If your exercise is intense, such as heavy weight lifting or long distance running. If you fall into one of these categories, you’re going to want to eat your meal or snack within the “Golden Window” of 30 minutes after you’re finished exercising. This is the time when your body is searching for energy to replenish its carbohydrate stores, known

as glycogen. Some great carbohydrate choices are whole grain products, starchy veggies, fruit, legumes, and dairy products. Protein is equally important post-exercise since it provides amino acids as the building blocks to assist in repairing muscles. Aim for 15 – 25 grams of protein to optimize recovery. Healthy choices include lean meats, fish, milk, yogurt, eggs, nuts, legumes and tofu. Some great snack ideas include Greek yogurt, granola and berries or roasted turkey on a whole-wheat tortilla with mixed raw veggies. In terms of fluids, the goal is to replace what was lost to sweat during exercise. A general guide is two to three cups of water for every pound of weight lost; however listening to your thirst cues can be just as effective. Sports drinks aren’t recommended unless you’ve exercised vigorously or sweat a lot – some contain more sugar than a can of pop! As for any exercise or diet regime, one size doesn’t fit all. Although this is a guideline, those who compete heavily may need more nourishment and for the sensitive tummies out there, extra caution should be taken when fuelling for your next race or big day in the mountains. The abundance of individuals dedicated to Fernie’s cultural side is commendable and something we are all proud of. There’s nothing quite like taking a friend to a gallery opening or Wednesday Concert Series and seeing the surprise on their face. Fernie is surprising like that, and we hope you encounter some wonders during your time here.

FERNIE ARTS STATION I moved to Fernie the summer of 2014 with my partner Colin and our dog Stella Blue. We decided to call Fernie home because it offered mountains, culture and a great community. We received the warmest welcome from the town and I took every opportunity to be involved in the arts and cultural scene through my work and as a volunteer. This led me to meet all kinds of people whom I now call friends. When a job came up at the Arts Station last Spring I jumped at the chance to work for the organization. I love that I am able to use my experience in the arts and be involved with various community events throughout the year. Everyday, I am involved with something different, from concerts, to gallery openings, to festivals, which keeps me excited and passionate about what I do! Fernie offers so much for a small town, with so many different arts and cultural events, and it is constantly striving to grow and do more. I hope to see this continue onwards and The Arts Station to offer more opportunities for all to enjoy! Q. The best kept Fernie secret... A. The tunnels under downtown. I learnt about them during Fernie Chautauqua a couple of years ago. I heard some great stories about what they were used for over the years during a historical walking tour. Q. How to best enjoy the evening’s sunset... A. I love - in the evening - riding my townie round the dike with my partner Colin and dog Stella Blue, and stopping in Annex park

Of course don’t forget to come by The Arts Station, which is the original CPR Station from 1908. The

Wednesday Night Concert Series takes place in Station Square, and is the perfect way to end your day playing in the mountains and sunshine. Q. I took up mountain biking when I moved to Fernie, so each summer gives me the opportunity to improve my skills and explore the growing trails we are so lucky to have. THE GUIDE’S HUT When we purchased The Guide’s Hut in 2016, it was more than a business deal - it was about becoming part of a community we love. After spending many years in Fernie and a lot of time in the surrounding area, it was finally time for us to call Fernie ‘home.’ After working as a sporting goods sales rep, I already had a relationship with The Guides Hut owners, Mark and Beth, who were dealers of mine. I loved the store, the staff and the brands, and eventually started discussions about purchasing it from them. And when the timing was right, Kim, our kids and myself jumped at the chance to become new owners. The real exciting part for me is working with staff who are such passionate and trusted experts. In fact, many have worked in the sporting goods industry for years and have already built relationships with customers. We now get the chance to build on that and continue to offer the best brands and the best service. Fully dedicated to the community, I also participate in several local groups and organizations, such as Fernie Rod and Gun Club, FMBC, FAST, and Fernie Tourism. While Fernie has always been a great winter destination, we’re excited about all the other year-round activities available in the area. We can help everyone, whether they’re locals or tourists, take advantage of the playground that’s right here in our own backyard. I’m in the store every day and can get to know our customers, and their needs better, and build our business around them. I gained my passion for the food and beverage industry at a young age by helping out at our family bakery in Germany (there might have been more eating than helping). We moved to Calgary when I was six and at a later age continued in the industry through jobs with Orange Julius, Red Robin, Original Joe’s (my first time as a general manager) and Fergus & Bix. I moved to Fernie in 2010 to continue my passion by managing what was then the Picnic Restaurant & Social. I have also managed the Northern Bar + Stage and The Central. I have been with Rusty Edge on the Fernie ski hill since November 2014. The restaurant business is challenging in Fernie, being a tourist town, with such low and high seasons; however I have always enjoyed a challenge! I am extremely happy working on Fernie’s beautiful ski hill. The views never get old and I love the local support, meeting new people daily, making people happy, exploring new menu items, coordinating weddings, and being intimately involved in running a successful business. When I joined Rusty Edge, I remember Andy (Andy Cohen, GM at Fernie Alpine Resort) asking me if I could envision it being successful in Fernie; I had no doubt in my mind! I knew we would have to do it right – a fun, warm, inviting, great food and drinks, games, music, family-friendly kind of place. We have built strong relationships with our clientele and all the support we have had has been incredibly endearing. We also open the best patio on the hill in the summer months. I believe success is built upon a basic formula – listen to your customers, give them what they want, and work hard. What I really love the most though (some call me crazy) is helping people plan their

I am extremely proud of where Rusty Edge sits currently. We have made leaps and bounds in our brief time being open on the hill. The goal is to get better and better and perhaps be a year round restaurant one day.

THE RAGING ELK HOSTEL I grew up in Calgary and from the age of 16 always loved skiing in Fernie. After backpacking across Australia with my cousin I discovered a passion for conversing with travellers and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the back packing industry.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when deciding on where to stay. In Fernie, one of the biggest decisions is whether to stay at the hill or in town. Once you’ve made this first choice, then really it comes down to your group size and the amenities you would like during your time here. Hostels, condos, bed and breakfasts, home rentals, hotels… it’s all here. Our only recommendation is to book early enough to ensure there is still vacancy!

When we first opened the Raging Elk I was in my mid 20s. It was quite challenging, especially considering the concept of hostels and back packing was quite foreign to many locals in Fernie. Our first clientele was from Sweden and I still have a laugh telling backpackers today of their experiences. It was when the Motor Inn (or, the Murder Inn as many called it) was the hotspot in town and Rockies (bless their pies) was “the” restaurant. In our second year of operation we only had two female guests who were daring enough to backpack off the beaten track to Fernie. Today, it is completely different. The town has evolved into a ski and mountain bike mecca on a global level with a diversity of bars, amenities and accommodation choice. With the addition of the “New Side” at Fernie Alpine Resort and an epic diverse trail network, our clientele has morphed into not only overseas travellers but also families and couples from within Canada who enjoy the social aspect of the hostel and want to spend a night, and not a fortune. I love the diversity of what’s available, and we are always trying to evolve. Over the past 20 years my wife and I have been continually adding new features and amenities to strengthen our product. Our most recent additions have been a hopping onsite lounge

Fernie may be growing, but it’s growing tastefully. The development has been slow and steady in recent years, with opportunities to purchase land to build, buy a home to renovate, invest in a condo or townhouse, or like many choose to rent. The entry level is high, like the rest of the BC real estate market, but the value has not faltered in our little mountain town and shows no signs of doing so in future. It’s a great little town to make home, or home away from home!

I grew up on the Lower Mainland. We were always outside - hiking, hunting and fishing. My first building project was a cabin, we had to row across a lake and then hike up a creek valley. On the weekends we’d pack what we needed and row over and work; I was twelve. In 1977, I left the Lower Mainland to find work in Alberta. I stopped in Fernie on my way and never left. It was just at the end of Mountain View’s development (The Airport). I built six or seven houses there. Back then there was no place to rent or live. It was really hard. Things changed and by 1981 you could buy a miner’s shack for twenty to twenty-five thousand. It was tough in the early days. There might be one or two houses built every year. We’d fight over who got the contract. Today it’s a lot easier to be a builder. I’ve always liked the tough jobs. You know, the ones that take a lot of thought and are complicated to build. We built the sewer plant at Fernie Alpine Resort, the reservoir for the City and lots of big structures up at the mines. Right now we’re building a house, a couple of concrete structures at a mine, a logging maintenance shop, a home reno in Sparwood, the miner memorial in Sparwood and a couple of other little things. As well as developing Burma Road Estates. It’s a busy year. Even with all that going on, learning and supporting the trades is important to me and we always try to have a couple of carpenters going for their Red Seal. When my boys were growing up I was the Boy Scouts leader. It gave me a good balance with work. We always tried to have

THE BENEFITS OF A WELL-MAINTAINED LANDSCAPE BY CAM MERTZ, FERNIE MOW AND SNOW The importance of a well-designed and maintained landscape in relation to property values cannot be understated. Leonard Perry, extension professor at the University of Vermont, discovered the following facts about the value of having quality landscapes: • It can add up to 14 per cent to the resale value of a home or commercial property. • It can speed up the sale of a home by as much as six weeks. • Spending five per cent of a home’s value on landscaping can result in 150 per cent or more return on investment. • Adding a hedge to a landscape increases property value by 3.5 per cent. • Adding a landscaped patio can add 12.4 per cent to the home’s value. Perry found other benefits derived from having landscaping done, such as energy savings when deciduous trees are planted to cast summer shade in areas where air conditioning is needed. “Properly selecting and placing plants can lower costs for heating and cooling homes by up to 20 per cent,” he says. The lifecycle of your landscape is dependent on how you address the spring and fall. There are simple tasks you can perform when your yard ‘wakes up’ from the long dormant winter months that have a massive impact on your enjoyment of your landscape all season. • Lawns should have all of the winter gravels removed. • Dethatching or ‘Power Raking’ is an important process as it removes all the old turf (thatch) that protected the roots over winter but now needs to be thinned out to allow the root base to initiate growth. • Aeration is the process of perforating the soil with holes to reduce soil compaction and allow water, air and nutrients to access the root base.

An easy way to understand what each nutrient value provides is to remember UP-DOWN-ALL AROUND. A good spring fertilizer will have high phosphorus values initiating root development (10-20-5), conversely a good summer fertilizer will have high nitrogen levels supporting vigorous top growth (30-0-4). Once your turf is prepared for the summer your attention should turn to shrub beds and gardens. A great practice is to remove all old growth on perennials and ensure all that spring plant energy is driven to the roots. Soils in garden beds can be turned over or rototilled incorporating oxygen into the sub base. This process stimulates microorganisms that release nutrients facilitating a great foundation for the seasonal plantings of vegetables and annuals. Throughout the summer regular watering, feeding, and cutting of lawns is important to

maintain your landscape and sustain your effort in the spring. Fernie is a Water Smart community. An underground irrigation system is a great way to ensure the health and sustainability of your landscape. Watering is targeted and can be adjusted throughout the growing season to reflect the needs of the landscape. No more dragging hoses, watering during the heat of the day or over spraying on your hardscapes. In the fall, prepare your landscape for winter. Mulch leaves into the lawn and let it grow longer so the roots are protected from snow and ice damage. Prune any dead tree branches evident after leaves have fallen. Mulch shrub beds and roughly spade soil over, avoid rototilling! It is easy to acknowledge the intrinsic benefits directly tied to an aesthetically pleasing landscape surrounding a home or business. What people may overlook are the many holistic benefits of landscapes and gardens; stress reduction, social benefits, sense of pride, and increased property values! FERNIE MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB / FERNIE TRAILS ALLIANCE I had been a frequent winter/summer visitor to Fernie for 25 years, but that changed in 2014 when I retired and moved to Fernie to become a resident of this community. After many years of volunteer service with numerous organizations in Calgary it was obvious that if I wanted to become a part of the community I would need to join a local organization or club. If you want to positively impact your community in any way, simply volunteer your time and skills and the feedback will be enriching. A career/job is ‘work’… volunteering is ‘life experience.’ Mountain biking has been an integral part of my life for many years and with its increasing popularity and the growing vibe in Fernie my decision was rather easy. I joined the FMBC to get to know the local mountain bike culture and determine where I could have a positive influence on its continued growth in this community. Volunteers are key to a community’s spirit. I enjoy the time spent on organizing and assisting with FMBC events and it is evident that the biking community is also in support by way of the increased participation over the past few years. Without a strong volunteer base none of these events would be possible. Joining the FTA was just an evolution of my interests in the mountain biking scene in Fernie. I began volunteering like most individuals on the weekly trail building parties but quickly became involved in organizing the work parties and other frequent builders activities. More recently I’ve taken on a more active role within the FTA as a director and co-chair of the Construction and Maintenance committee. I’ve been a trail

SUBMITTED PHOTO builder for many years and live by the motto, “Build it and they will come.” The local trail network is a huge community asset that benefits all users and many businesses in Fernie. I believe we are stewards of this asset and need to continue its development for the benefit of all users. It’s rewarding to be part of such active and vibrant organizations within the Fernie community and it has allowed me to meet many great people. In a short time I’ve become a member of the community and look forward to assisting in the growth of the mountain biking culture and its positive impact. Fernie is no longer just a ski town but also a summer mountain biking destination. Like a lot people have said in the past… I came to Fernie for the winter but stayed for the summer.

ELK VALLEY TRANSIT SYSTEM The Elk Valley Transit System facilitates travel between Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood. Health Connections provides transportation for medical appointments on Wednesdays and Fridays, leaving at 9am at the Fernie Hospital and arriving at the Tamarack Mall or Cranbrook Hospital at 10:15am. Transportation departs Cranbrook at 3pm from the Cranbrook Hospital, arriving in Fernie at 4pm. The Summer Road Trail begins at the top of the Elk Chair. Winding through the Lizard Bowl via switchbacks, the ascent is quite easy with no steep ascents - just a constant uphill to the top of the Boomerang Chair and the Bear Chair.

The Polar Peak Trail follows the Lost Boys Trail out to the Lookout. From here it turns right and follows the Lizards Range crest all the way around to Polar Peak. The trail offers spectacular views for the entire trip. At 2100 metres, Polar Peak provides a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding area. From Polar Peak, return to the saddle between Currie Headwall and Polar Peak and follow the trail back to the Hut at the Top of Whitepass Chair. Return to the Timber Chair to download or take the Timber Trek to the base.

The Lost Boys Lookout and Lost Boys Loop Trails offer an easy walk through the alpine meadows. The Lost Boys Pass Lookout is an easy 0.75 km walk from the top of the Timber Chair to the west. With a vertical gain of only 80m this walk is suited for youngsters as well as adults. The Lost Boys Loop is a trail that goes out to the Lost Boys Lookout then descends through the alpine to the Mammoth Droppings to an interesting area of giant boulders below the Mammoth Peak. The Loop is 1.7 km with a vertical climb of about 100m. The trail is an easy walk and suitable for children.

Once you reach the top of the Bear Chair you can choose to return on the trail you came up on, or you can turn left and go south across Lizard Bowl about ½ km to a trail descending between Cruiser and Dancer. This part of the trail is all limestone and contains many fossils of horn corals, tabulate corals and crinoids.

Fernie Trails Fernie’s extensive trail system spreads over the valley, on private land, Crown land and City property. Thankfully, with organizations such as the Fernie Trails & Ski Touring Club, the Fernie Mountain Bike Club and the Fernie Trails Alliance, important land-use agreements are in place to allow multi-use recreation on these trails, along with trail building, enhancement and maintenance.

Please respect the hard work and countless hours of many volunteers and the agreements in place. When using the Fernie trail network, try to leave as little evidence as possible of your journey. Take out what you brought in. Avoid trails when they are wet and saturated. Make noise and travel in a group to avoid animal encounters and to warn other recreationalists of your presence. Read signage and obey rules such as “Dogs on Leash” or “No Dogs Allowed.” And respect other recreationalists and landowners.
