You may be wondering how

this community is so strong and resilient with such an assortment of residents and visitors. Here is our take – while these individuals may be diverse, they share some important characteristics. People who live and play in Fernie are involved. They sit on boards and committees, organize events, volunteer their time, advocate for what they feel is important. Sure, this may vary from the Rod and Gun Club to the Parent Advisory Council, but it’s the investment in the community, the desire to get behind what

they love and value. This community has an impressive number of organizations, all run by passionate members of our community. And for that, we are fortunate, as it provides numerous opportunities for both residents and visitors. People are supportive of one another. They celebrate the successes of their neighbours, and organize a meal train if they are in need. Parents take turns watching one another’s kids to ensure everyone gets their turn on a powder day. Businesses use as many local suppliers as possible, and promote other

businesses to their customers. Residents and visitors shop locally where they can, and share their appreciation of the amazing resources available here. In essence, we know we are lucky with what we have, and have seen its progression, and we want to see it continue to get even better. While everyone has their unique Fernie passions, it’s the enjoyment of these passions that is the common denominator. Sure, some might prefer that game of curling on a weekday night, while others choose a weekend of snowmobiling in the backcountry. But, it’s the level of enjoyment that is similar. Recreational passions are integral to our lives in Fernie. We may love what we do professionally, but we love what we do outside of that to the same degree… sometimes, even more. A last common trait people here carry is pride. Everyone connected to Fernie, whether they are on their first trip, spend multiple weekends here a year, or live here permanently, are very proud of this

connection. They tend to know a lot about this community, its colourful history and bountiful offerings. And they aren’t afraid to share this information! I can’t even put a number on how many times I have met an individual in town who decided to come because they heard about it through a friend, an acquaintance while travelling, or at a ski show talking to an excited Tourism Fernie representative. No matter our jobs, our activities of choice, or our friends, we are all proud to call Fernie our home… regardless of how long we are staying. We all welcome you to Fernie and hope that you enjoy your stay. Maybe you’ll find a way to get involved with an organization or event while here. Be supportive by frequenting some of Fernie’s amazing businesses. Feel your heart race with enjoyment while engaging in one of our amazing recreational activities. It’s a difficult place to leave.

Location: Southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, the only city-class municipality in Canada that is fully encircled by the Rocky Mountains. Just 45 minutes from both the Alberta and US borders. Population: 4,448 permanent residents with an additional 2,000 outside city limits and a substantial seasonal population in both winter and summer. Snowfall: Situated in the Elk Valley, Fernie has its own microclimate with approximately 360 cm of snow in town and 875 cm on the hill. Temperature: Average temperature is –11 C in the winter. The Griz: Fernie’s powder legend that points his musket to the clouds to promote snowfall from the skies. The Ghostrider: Located on Mt. Hosmer, a distinctive image of a horse and rider rumoured to be the ghost of an angry Aboriginal Chief and his daughter pursuing William Fernie. Best seen as the sun sets, but more noticeable in summer. Fernie Alpine Resort: Previously known as Fernie Snow Valley, is going into its 53rd season! Catskiing: Fernie is home to Island Lake Catskiing, which celebrated 25 years a couple of years ago, and Fernie Wilderness Adventures! Festivals: Fernie’s biggest winter festival is Griz Days, in honour of the Griz and the amazing champagne powder Fernie is known for. Held over the first weekend in March, this is an event not to be missed.

FERNIE ALPINE SKI TEAM Even though I moved to Fernie only two years ago, I’m no stranger to this town. Like many other Calgarians, I have been coming to Fernie to ski since I was little. I even learned to ski here. When I was five years old, my parents put my sister and I on the Fernie Alpine Ski Team, and we’ve skied every season since. At first, my time in Fernie was limited to the winter season, until I started mountain biking. I quickly fell in love with Fernie’s gnarly trails and the laid-back summer vibe. When I was 15, my family moved to Fernie for a winter, so that my sister and I could train for ski racing. Before the snow could melt, we decided we weren’t going back to Calgary. We were addicted to the easy lifestyle of a small town compared to the hustle and bustle of the big city, where doing anything in the mountains required driving for hours. Since I started coming here, I’ve seen many things change in Fernie recreation, like the addition of the Polar Peak Chair, the expansion of Fernie’s mountain bike trails and the development of cross-country skiing paths. Q. No Fernie winter is complete without… A. Watching the Fernie Ghostriders play their archrivals – Kimberley. The excitement of these games really makes our tiny arena feel like an NHL stadium. Both teams have plenty of fans come out to watch, so the guys try their hardest, and it’s really entertaining.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Q. My preferred way to explore Fernie is… A. By mountain bike. From Old Stumpy to Project 9, Fernie offers plenty of biking opportunities. It’s by far the best way to experience every part of Fernie, offering the most spectacular views of the valley, and some of the most exhilarating downhills in BC. Don’t forget to finish with a dip in Coal Creek. Q. The best part about the Fernie community, in my opinion is… A. The strong mountain culture. Obviously with the topography we have in Fernie, we attract many mountain junkies. Most people move here to play in the mountains. This

allows you to meet people from all over the world, doing so many different things. You also get tons of mountain-loving filmmakers coming to Fernie, making events like the Fernie Mountain Film Fest so interesting to watch, letting you see all the local talents. Q. If I had to pick one way to spend an evening in Fernie, it would be… A. In the winter, one of my favourite things to do after a long day of skiing is to go tobogganing on the ski hill with my ski buddies at night. If you walk up Holo Hike to the Bear Chair and sled from there, it’s a long, fast ride to the bottom.

“Winter is for skiing! Spring, summer and fall are for biking.” My black and white mantra persisted until I got my first taste of riding King Kong tires three years ago. A friend was kind enough to lend me his fat bike for a group ride, and so I raced home to face my first dilemma: what to wear? After some indecision, I showed up for our group ride ready to get on a chairlift, not to ride a bicycle up into Ridgemont. Our contingent was five strong and we rode single file sweating (some more than others), laughing and doing slow motion falls in the most benign places. I say slow motion because you really don’t go very fast when you are on a fat bike. When riding a bike with oversized tires in the snow, the sweet spot is the hard-pack, which is machine-groomed, snow-shoed or previously ridden. If you leave that groomed area you end up planting that big tire in some deep snow which results in a f-a-a-a-l-l-l and usually some laughter.

I realized after my first ride that ski clothing is not bike clothing. I was incredibly sweaty and as a result instantly freezing and ready for a long soak in a hot tub after the ride home. But man, was it fun and I was hooked. I mean really, why wouldn’t a guy who loves to ride his mountain bike not enjoy riding in the winter? It’s beautiful, quiet and super fun. Obviously, powder days mean skiing but mediocre snow days are bike days now. It was a natural extension, an evolution, it made me healthier, kept my legs spinning and plus I got to go bike shopping… again. The following season, my wife and I shared a fat bike, which probably wasn’t the best idea as it was a little too big for her and a little too small for me. My buddies said I looked like a circus bear on a bike. This was a temporary solution that worked for both of us, as great rides ensued that season. In 2015, much to the chagrin of my bulging garage, a new fat bike found a place under our roof. Fat biking has turned my black and white attitude grey. It supplements my other winter sports and keeps me happily spinning my wheels all year long. Whether you are here for a weekend or a season, give it a whirl! WHAT YOU NEED 1.

A fat bike. Rentals are available in multiple places in the valley and if you want to purchase a two-wheeled monster truck you can do so at Straight Line, Gear Hub, Guides Hut and Ski & Bike Base. Remember, there is no PST on bikes.

Helmet and eyewear. I wear my bike helmet with a lightweight toque (beanie). For my face I will wear a buff as a “just in case it gets crazy cold” layer. For me, sunglasses work well but some friends wear goggles for the ride down.

Layers of clothing (not ski clothing). Merino wool is the best as it wicks the moisture away from your skin and can be worn several times before it starts to really smell. A merino layer with a fashionable bike jersey (for the pockets) over top and then a shell that can cut the wind for the ride down. The ride down is the coldest part, as you are now a little sweaty so this is where an outer layer truly comes in handy. “Less is more” means dress for ten degrees warmer than it truly is.

Footwear and pedals. Some experts say to go with flat pedals before progressing to clipless. I wear my Shimano shoes with a pair of merino wool socks and a Pearl Izumi overshoe and have had very warm toes. Other friends wear flat pedals and a big pair of boots. My wife wears hotshots in her shoes when snow biking. Hands. My Bar Mitts are so toasty that I have taken off my summer bike gloves while riding in the winter. Personally, they are a must if you plan to winter ride. Some friends who dislike the Bar Mitts because of reduced mobility go for lobster mitts and seem to have great success in keeping their hands warm.

WHERE TO RIDE The 2015/2016 season is going to be the best ever as the Fernie Mountain Bike Club (FMBC) has a couple of groomers and there is significant traffic from the increased popularity. Ian Shopland from Straight Line says, “We used to have to wait multiple days after a significant snow storm to ride the trails. Now with all the traffic and groomers we can pretty much ride any day.”

Ridgemont and Montane. Cemetery Bypass, Kiddy Up, Queen V, Ecoterrorist, Deadfall, Eric’s and Sidewinder, and the Montane Trail area.

Fernie Provincial Park. Gorby, Old Goat, Old Stumpy.

Mount Proctor. Swine Flu and Far Side.

Facebook has a public group called Fernie Fat Bike where people ask questions, give trail conditions and post about equipment etc. The group is quite responsive to queries as we are all very involved with the sport.

Strava is another tool that can be used effectively for winter biking. Members of the Fernie Mountain Bike Club have their own feed that you can follow and see rides, duration and even photos.

Nordic Skiing in Fernie BY JEN GREBELDINGER

PHOTO COURTESY OF FERNIE NORDIC SOCIETY Last winter in an interview with the Fernie Fix, local (super hero) teenager Maëlle Weber noted that she hoped Nordic skiing opportunities would expand in Fernie and more people would become interested in the sport. Well, all signs point to that wish coming true! The Fernie Nordic Society boasted over 570 members last year and the number of options for cross-country skiing is increasing. The Fernie Nordic Society is very proud of the 8.5 km of groomed trails now available to skiers at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre (EVNC), adjacent to Mt Fernie Provincial Park. Groomed for both classic and skate skiing, the trail system connects the Mt Fernie Trailhead and Warming Hut to Fernie Alpine Resort with a variety of loop options along the way. This summer, crews finished The Runt trail – a sneaky bypass of the thigh-burning Grunt, both of which start on the west side of the Teck Bridge (over Lizard Creek). In addition to challenging trails like The Grunt and Lizard Lookout Hill, there are trails to accommodate skiers of all levels such as Jackrabbit and Cedar Loops. So, whether you’re looking to break in your first set of skate skis, strap on your ‘90s classic set up

or train for a Kootenay Cup race, you will find trails and terrain that challenge and invigorate you. There is one thing that ensures both the first time skier and the Strava enthusiast will enjoy their time on the trails – the grooming. This is why the Elk Valley Nordic Centre is a ski-only facility. We are lucky to have the services of Foothills Silva Culture to groom our trails. Grooming is a significant but vital expense that dramatically enhances the cross-country ski experience. Luckily, we’re in Fernie, folks! There are great alternative, multi-use venues if you are looking to snow bike, snowshoe, walk or Nordic ski with your dog. Montane has both Nordic exclusive and multi-use trails available for winter. Both Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake Lodge provide multi-use winter trails that are dog friendly and Mt Fernie Provincial Park is lovely terrain for a snowshoe or walk with pets. If you’re interested in cross-country only trails with less elevation, you can head out to the Fernie Golf & Country Club. There you’ll find 5 km of regularly groomed trails that loop through the golf course and offer great views of the surrounding mountains. Just like in summer, no dogs on the Golf Course, please!

These are maintained in partnership with the FG&CC. If you are going to visit the cross-country only trails at either the Elk Valley Nordic Centre or the Golf Course, we do ask that you either buy a very reasonably priced annual Fernie Nordic Society membership (fernienordic.com) or purchase a day pass at the designated trailheads. Membership is a key factor to the long term sustainability of first class cross-country skiing opportunities in Fernie. But the foremost element in ensuring the long-term health and vibrancy of these lands and our access to them is responsible stewardship. If we can all commit to becoming stewards of our trails and protectors of the lands in which we recreate, we will ensure our long-term access to them. Moreover, young advocates like Maëlle, and every child who enjoys winter sports in Fernie, will continue to have access to beautiful and professionally maintained trails well into the future. FOR CERTAIN THERE IS AN EXPONENTIAL AMOUNT OF THINGS TO DO IN FERNIE. WHEN THE LEAVES BEGIN TO FALL FROM THEIR TREES WITH THE CHANGING SEASON AND THE PATHWAYS ARE SCATTERED WITH MEMORIES OF SUMMER LONG SINCE GONE, A SUDDEN, OFTEN WELCOMED CHANGE OCCURS. ››› Comfy sweaters and warm boots replace shorts and sandals. Those of us trying to hold on to the last moments of summer take to the mountain bike trails, even when it starts to snow. And when we finally come to accept that the warmth of summer has been engulfed by the crisp, cold winds of a looming winter, we change what we do. We seek out different, sometimes inside-type things to do.

There is, by no means, a shortage of such things. It is only a matter of knowing where to find them. If you’ve had a full day of fresh powder skiing and – perhaps new to Fernie – you aren’t fully aware of the relaxing activities this little mountain Shangri-La has to offer you, take yourself downtown to the historic Vogue Theatre (est. 1908) on Second Ave. There is nothing better than a bag of hot, buttered

popcorn and a new movie on “cheap Tuesday” to complete a perfect wintery day. The Vogue’s upstairs arcade is also great for the kids and is like stepping back into the 1980s for some old-fashioned gaming. Or, if you happen to be in town on the first Monday of the month from September to April,the Vogue Theatre plays host to Indie Films Fernie (IFF), a program of the local Arts Station. Or perhaps, in celebration of an epic day on the hill playing in snow, all you seek is an ice-cold beer at one of the local bars. Head to the Griz Bar – a local hot spot – at Fernie Alpine Resort and watch as those giant white flakes fall heavy on the mountain and you get excited for the next days’ riding. Find yourself conversing with local hooligans for a game of pool, or pair your Fernie beer with a plate of hot, cheesy nachos and you have yourself a finale to a flawless day. Head into town for local trivia and jam nights at The Brickhouse and the Pub. DJ sets at the Northern and the Royal are guaranteed for a rowdy experience. WINTER 2015|16 › RECREATION TALK TO SOME EXPERTS Check in with Ski Patrol at Fernie Alpine Resort for the most up-to-date snowpack and backcountry assessments. Most of the patrollers also volunteer for Fernie Search and Rescue.

HAVE AN EMERGENCY PRE-PLAN The best plans in the world can go wrong. An injured partner, an avalanche, broken equipment. It’s going to happen at some point – what are you going to do about it? Who are you going to call? How are you going to call them? How long can you survive while waiting for help? Do you have any first aid skills?

THINGS TO TAKE WITH YOU You’ve done your pre-trip checks, left your itinerary with someone in town and you’re ready to go. Your pack weighs more than your house, and you’re going to be hauling it uphill all day. You pull everything out and try to work out what you can leave at home.

HERE’S OUR TOP TEN ITEMS THAT NEED TO STAY IN THAT PACK: TRANSCEIVER Have one, and know how to use it. Make sure your buddy knows how to use theirs, as well. If you get buried, he/she’s the one looking for you. After 15 minutes under the snow, your chances of survival fall by about 90%, so a practice might be a good thing. Check those batteries as well. Less than 90%? Change them.

SHOVEL Get a good quality shovel, preferably not plastic, and know how to use it in hard postavi snow.

PROBE It’s Number Three of the Big Three with the two above. Practice using it.

FIRST AID PACK AND FIRE At least a minimum amount to cover minor injuries. Throw some means of lighting a fire in as well, you should be able to survive the night in any conditions with a big fire.

More people than you might think have spent an unexpected night out in winter around Fernie. That extra fleece could make the difference. Also keep a thermal wrap in your pack. They weigh nothing.

Cellphones work in plenty of places, and they are the communications equipment most people will have. They won’t work everywhere though, and you may need to climb to higher ground to get a signal.

For any backcountry recreation, unless you’re with someone who really knows the area. And even then, maps don’t weigh much, so take one just in case.

OK, that’s 11 items, this one could have been tucked under Communications but is worthy of mention on its own. A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) can send a GPS location to emergency services when things go wrong. Fernie SAR has rescued a number of people who have activated their SPOT or In Reach locators who probably would not be around were it not for the device.

NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT Everything looks the same in the snow, so it’s easy to get lost. GPS is great, but the cold kills the batteries, so take and know how to use a compass as well.

FOOD AND DRINK Throw a bit extra in just in case the trip ends up longer than expected.

TOOLS At least enough to make sure you have some means of getting a binding to work if it breaks on you. Walking in waist-deep snow is no fun!

Above all, have fun, play safe and we’ll see you out there. In the summer this includes bikers, hikers and hunters who may find themselves lost or injured away from urban areas. In the winter the focus moves to assisting snowmobilers, skiers and other winter recreationalists who get into trouble in Fernie’s vast backcountry areas.

option of skiing up towards or – for the very adventurous – to Island Lake Lodge, starting from the lower parking lot. Fernie has a host of family programs available, including Kindergym held three times a week at the Fernie Family Centre, Toddlertime and Storytime at the Fernie Heritage Library, and Parent and Tot Fun Time at the Knox United Church. There is nothing quite like skating outdoors. In town, skating on the Annex Pond, Maiden Lake or the pond at the Golf Course is a popular pastime. For the more adventurous, consider skating at Silver Springs in Elko. If it’s more of an indoor day, the Memorial Arena hosts public skating regularly, along with free public skating Tuesday to Thursday from 10:30am-11:15am. From the more relaxed trails located at the Mount Fernie Provincial Park to the intermediate trails available in Ridgemont, your best option is to pick up a Fernie Mountain Bike Guide and choose a route perfect for your group. If you prefer hard-packed walking, Montane is multi-use and groomed regularly, and Fernie Alpine Resort has a frequented snowshoe trail that is a great extension to your time at the hill. 6. Indoor Climbing. There are two climbing walls in Fernie, one located at the College of the Rockies and the other at Evolution Health and Fitness. Both walls are available for you and your family. The College has set times the wall is open, along with the opportunity for you to book the wall for a specific date and time. 1-866-423-4691 The Rock Garden at Evolution has a schedule, which includes family climb time from 2-4pm the first Sunday of every month. 9. Island Lake Lodge. This winter, Island Lake is extending its schedule for the popular Winter Lunch and Spa, now running Thursday to Sunday the entire season. You’d think it would be the chairlift ride in 1999 where I met my husband. Or maybe one of many epic days crushing Currie Bowl laps with friends. Perhaps, it would be a memory earned from ten years working with the herculean Fernie Ski Patrol. But I can say with absolute certainty, that my ultimate winter day at FAR was January 17, 2012. A collision of two robust weather systems directly above Fernie

culminated into the perfect winter storm, now infamously known as Champagne Tuesday. As temperatures hovered at an unholy -25°C outside we apprehensively climbed out of bed and into reluctant ski boots. No sooner were we back under a 94 cm deep impeccable blanket of over-the-head-blowerpow. It was the stuff that Powder Princess dreams are made of. Turn after effortless turn, we carved powder signatures through the snow; faces stinging in the cold; feet burning like heck, we were weightless. I think Justin and I lasted eight laps that day, and while we could hear the collective hoots and hollers from afar... we never crossed another set of tracks or saw another soul.

A lot of good days followed. Seeing the mountains in all their beauty from Polar Peak, cross-country skiing in the sunshine, warming up with a hot beverage, stopping and soaking in sunrise and sunset colours, and welcoming people who are just as excited as I was in my first season at Fernie Alpine Report – these are some of my favourite moments. There will be one more activity to add for this upcoming winter: we will have snow bikes (“fat bikes”) in the Rental Shop which means more fun times ahead!

MARK ORMANDY (FAR ACCOUNTING MANAGER) From New Zealand, 15 Years in Fernie NICOLE MATEI PHOTO Snake Ridge that we could admire for days like signatures in the snow? One day that sticks out for me was a random weekday when I was patrolling in the late ‘70s. It was a nondescript average day, and I was just out skiing, doing my job. At some point during that day, I noticed that I had not seen a soul for the past few runs. It was dumping big fat flakes. It was cold. It was deep. I remember riding the old Bear T-Bar and looking out at the Bear trees, that were seemingly being buried by snow. I did several runs and saw no one – the lifty was in the hut and did not come out. It was so quiet, so peaceful, so deep and so awesome. Skiing in silence and solitude. I’ll never forget that day.

BRITTA PLAAS (FAR RENTAL SHOP) From Germany, Four Years in Fernie It’s tough to nail down just one favourite memory, but one of my best winter days was my first day skiing here at Fernie Alpine Resort. In 2011, I got a job at the resort and once the hill opened I took my skis and went up the Elk Chair – it was time to learn how to ski! I remember the pure excitement of being in Fernie and exploring the mountain on skis. My introduction to powder skiing soon followed, and in January 2012 I experienced the epic 2012 “Champagne Tuesday” – 94 cm in 18 hours – and I learned how to ski in deep powder! I started to enjoy skiing in the trees and almost everywhere on the mountain and being outside with friends all day.

Hmm, best winter memory? That’s a real tough question – seasons blend into seasons, runs run into runs, turns link together. But one day definitely stands out… March 2011, lots of snow. I was in Calgary picking up my mum from the airport on a late arrival from New Zealand. It was a long drive through a blizzard back to Fernie, and all I could think about was the powder day that I had missed. We arrived home safely that night – I slept for a few hours and dragged myself out of bed. Looking out the window that morning, the storm had passed and it was clearing. I quickly grabbed some coffee and drove to the hill. At the top of the Bear Chair I heard that Snake Ridge was opening… I couldn’t believe my luck. Snake Ridge had been closed for some time due to a large avalanche, so the new snow there was untouched. I skied out there uncontested – where was everyone? Had they burned themselves out riding the previous days’ powder? I turned into the top of Snake Main, and launched off the crown of the avalanche. Landing in a blanket of fresh storm snow, I skied top to bottom, grinning from ear to ear. Back to the top. Repeat. I think I got three to four runs in before I crossed another track. To be able to ski Snake Main, fresh, uncrowded and with good visibility is one thing… but to ski it repeatedly with a crown to jump off at the top is priceless. Years ago I used to spend most of my weekends and holidays in Fernie. In 2005 I made a commitment to my husband at the wonderful old Wood restaurant (on the ski hill). We had also made a commitment to make Fernie home. This was the experience we wanted for our children as they grew up. My involvement in health and wellness had begun during my 12 years as a massage practitioner. I understood even more how physical well-being can contribute to overall wellness. My first interaction with indoor cycling (aka Spin) came as a student, but I was hooked and after my first two children were born I began the process of certification so that I could teach. After a conversation with Marlene Vale, who was instrumental in the growth of the Castle Movement on 1st, a perfect space had materialized and I knew this was a great opportunity to bring an indoor cycling studio to Fernie. We have such an active community here and cycling is a huge component of that. The phenomenon of indoor cycling has grown rapidly in the last few years and is going stronger than ever. It has been extremely popular in large cities with thousands of boutique cycling studios showing up around the world, but is now beginning to filter down to smaller centres. The great thing about indoor cycling is that it is an effective, low-impact, high-energy workout, that is great for all fitness levels. No matter your experience.

PREPARING FOR AND RECOVERING FROM WINTER ACTIVITIES BY JEREMY WENZLAWE

Excitement is in the air! Ski season is here and people are getting their ski legs into shape. That’s important, but what is often forgotten is the prep needed before working out and the recovery required after. Here are a few movement and tissue drills you can perform before training. These will help keep you uninjured and having fun. A little tightness and stiffness is expected but no “bad” pain should be felt. Before mobilizing you need to get warm. Try jumping rope, switching from leg to leg. No jump rope? Simply jump up and down. 100 jumps shared between each leg in sets of ten. The goal is to get warm, increase heart rate, breathing and core temperature. Once warmed up, you’re ready to take your joints through as full a range of motion as you safely can.

MOBILITY DRILLS: 1) Deep Forward Lunge: Hold with a FLAT front foot and straight rear leg. Make sure your front knee is tracking over your foot. In this position, attempt to move lower over the time frame. Oscillating your hips back and forth, front and back through their range in this position. Two minutes each side. 2) Deep Forward Lunge: With front foot on its SIDE keeping your knee off the ground and straight rear leg move your hips through the same range of motion as above. Two minutes per leg. This drill can put some pressure on your knee and ankle so listen to your body; the movement should always be pain-free. 3) Deep Side Lunge: Staying flat-footed, squat down and extend one leg out straight to the side while keeping the other leg in a squat. On the bent leg keep your knee over your foot. Spend 30 seconds focusing on moving your ankle and hip through their ranges of motion while feeling a good stretch in the outstretched leg. Now plant the outstretched foot flat keep your hips

low, move slowly across and over onto the opposite side. As you move across, keep your shin vertical, so you don’t put too much pressure on your knee. Spend another 30 seconds here going through the same ankle and hip ranges. Do this back and forth mobility pattern six to eight times or until you feel free of stiffness and have good movement.

4) Posterior Hip Capsule: On hands and knees weight one leg with all your weight. Think of allowing the top of your femur to passively push into the back of your buttocks (hip capsule) while oscillating through its range of motion. Spend two minutes here then switch legs. 5) Posterior Hip Capsule with a twist (external rotation): Repeat the above drill but move the foot of the weighted leg up so that it looks like a modified “pigeon pose” while still allowing your femur to be passively pushed into the back of your hip capsule. Oscillate in this position. This can be tough on the knee joint so again should be a “bad pain free” range of motion. These drills should get you ready for the activity of the day, but exercise and prep is only half the battle. Recovery is key to ensuring you enjoy the endless powder we’re hopefully going to get this winter!

RECOVERY TIPS: 1) Drink plenty of fluids. Yes, those pints of FBC are fluid, just be sure to have a glass of water to accompany every pint! 2) When done playing for the day, try a pair of compression stockings or pants to help flush your lower tissues of all the blood that has been pooling in your hard boots. 3) Get a roller (foam or otherwise) and roll out your calves from bottom to top releasing any little adhesions. You can also use a lacrosse ball and roll out the bottom of your feet. Two minutes each calf and foot per side.

4) Use that same roller or lacrosse ball and roll out the tissues just above your knee cap, extending and flexing your knee. Two minutes per leg. We all like to play hard but you need to take care of yourself too. Proper warmup, mobilization and recovery are key to enjoying activities all winter long. A. A great entertainment line up! Fernie is known for its nightlife, arts and culture, whether it be the DJs rolling through or world-class musicians. Fernie is on the map and artists want to play here! I think that is really cool and I’m proud to be a part of making it happen.

After having spent seven years in Vancouver working in both the music industry and legal community, I am so happy to once again call Fernie home, and to be working a dream job as the Administrator of the Arts Station. For such a small community, I have always been amazed at how many artists live here. There is something so special about this place that inspires and drives the creative process. Growing up in Fernie, I always felt inspired and focused to write or sing, whether it was in choir or on stage. After years of studying opera, playing at open mics or singing at community events, I moved to Vancouver to continue pursuing music where I worked as a paralegal by day, and musician by night. Combining the two worlds was no easy feat but I managed. I recorded my EP, performed on the club circuit, had a song on radio and worked in various studios. My time in Vancouver was an amazing education in the music industry, and also on the trials and tribulations of being an independent artist. Being back in Fernie, however, I am relieved to write in such a free, relaxed environment and to also get a new project off the ground. That’s the luxury of being in a place like this; there is time to be precious with one’s artistic pursuits without the pressure and demand of the city. Fernie has become a buzzword. There is no denying that this community has taken a spot on the world stage as people are seeking more opportunities to engage with art and entertainment. In my observations,

BY NOW, YOU’VE LIKELY REALIZED THAT FERNIE IS A LOT MORE THAN JUST A FANTASTIC SKI HILL. THERE IS ALSO A VIBRANT ARTS SCENE, BROUGHT TOGETHER BY A CONFLUENCE OF STAUNCH ARTS APPRECIATORS, TALENTED ARTISTS AND A WELCOMING, RELAXED PLACE FOR ARTISTS TO VISIT. It is this stew that has made Fernie’s authors series – Booked! is now in its third successful season – a must-do series of events over winter. Hosted in the stunning Fernie Heritage Library, Booked! welcomes some of Canada’s literary stars. Booked! events are exactly that – events. Local caterers and shops, like Le Grande Fromage, provide munchies. Local bands perform before and after the author’s presentation. And the presentation itself is often moderated by Fernie’s own literary star, novelist Angie Abdou (The Bone Cage, Between). The series has brought in the likes of Alison Pick, Timothy Taylor and Will Ferguson. This year’s series began with poet Christian Bök and ends with the singular Shelagh Rogers. Kara Stanley comes to Fernie in October with her moving memoir Fallen: A Trauma, A Marriage and the Transformative Power of Music. Stanley’s story follows how she and her husband re-invented their lives after he suffered a traumatic brain and spinal cord injury. Beginning with the harrowing discovery that her husband was being airlifted from the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver, Stanley’s narrative is gripping and heart-wrenching. It is the unknowing: not knowing whether her husband, Simon Paradis, will live or die; not knowing if he will live, but in a coma; not knowing if his brain injury will render him helpless. The tension eases, though, as Paradis, begins his long road to recovery, first awakening from a coma then awakening

Together, Stanley and Paradis face the challenges of what their new lives will look like, from finding a new, accessible house to the constant physical rehabilitation to the inevitable change in marital dynamic. While these challenges are intense in themselves, they feel a welcome respite from unknowing part of the journey. Their transformation has much to do with music, which has been a part of Paradis’ life since childhood. He was in a band, and all he wanted was a chance to play again – on a stage, with his buddies. The transformation also has a lot to do with Stanley’s ability to write her story down. It is through her journey of trying to understand her new circumstances that her readers can identify with the complex emotions this trek provoked. And it is in her sharing that we can summon the strength to face our own challenges. Fallen will likely bring you to tears, but it will also inspire. In January, Fernie welcomes Raziel Reid. His book When Everything Feels Like the Movies was heartily championed by Lainey Lui on the 2015 Canada Reads. At that time, the book was also experiencing a bit of backlash from readers who felt that its subject matter and language was much too adult to carry the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature. There was a (fortunately) failed attempt to force Reid to return his GG prize and money. The upside to the backlash was the discussions that were hatched: is the

Children’s Literature category too broad? is young adult fiction eclipsing other genres in its innovation? and so on. When Everything Feels Like the Movies won’t be an easy read for some people – and not for the language, even. Reid’s main characters Jude and Angela aren’t entirely easy to like. But it is in this where the magic lies. Reid shows us how easy it is to fall into bully mode. As a reader, we may not agree with their choices, like their language or be in harmony with their worldviews – but Jude and Angela aren’t evil. They’re just teenagers trying to figure out where they fit in, in a small town where being different isn’t cool. In the end When Everything Feels Like the Movies shows us that people are much more complex than we often give them credit for being. There is often a lot more going on under the surface than most people let on. We’re all living in our own little movies. Shelagh Rogers, real Canadian royalty, comes to Fernie in April. The CBC host of The Next Chapter and former host of Sounds Like Canada, is sure to have many stories to bring along with her own writing. I don’t think that I am alone in saying that it will be a real honour to host her in Fernie. Visit the events calendar for this season’s Booked! dates. I have worked in the outdoor retail/repair industry since I was 15. My first job was a service tech at Sepp’s Ski Shop in Kingston, Ontario, and I instantly fell in love with the work. From then onward, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on, and being around, skis and snowboards and learning all I can about all the different technical aspects of the gear. It wasn’t until I moved to Fernie for my job at Ski Base that I started to work on the retail floor on a regular basis. Ralph hired me to manage the service shop, but turns out I was drawn more to the retail side of things: talking with people from around the world to try and help them find the best equipment for what their needs are is so fulfilling. I love my job ! I sell fun to people that have a passion for the same things I do; what could be better? Over the years, there have been a lot of technological advancements in the gear, which has been exciting to witness. From the days when shaped skis hit the market, which all of a sudden made it feel like you had power steering under your feet, to more recently the rocker or early rise skis and snowboards that help skiers and snowboarders float in the deep snow with ease while still attaining proper edge hold on groomers. I really don’t know what the future holds for the ski/snowboard industry (I actually do know, but if I tell you I will have to kill you) but I know it will be great, as it has never let me down so far. As long as the snow keeps falling...

At least one really good day of riding where your legs are telling you to stop but you’re having too much fun so you do a few more laps even though your body is completely exhausted. Q. My preferred way to explore Fernie is... A. Tough one. I really enjoy the skiing and snowboarding at the ski hill. But I also love to get away from the chair lifts and spend time exploring the backcountry.

Q. No Fernie Winter is complete without...

A. A trip to emerg. The staff there is great.

A. I think the best part about the Fernie

community is that there are people from all over the world colouring the community, whether they have come for a few days, a few weeks, a season or in a lot of cases years, they make this place special. Q. If I had to pick one way to spend an evening in Fernie, it would be... A. A great way to spend an evening is with a headlamp and some cross-country skis with a flask of scotch. Or at one of our many great restaurants with friends talking about the day skiing… the tequila at Nevados is a great way to get warm and loosen up sore muscles.

I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND MYSELF IN THE LATTER. ››› In high school, I was a theatre “nerd” but I like to fondly remember those years of Levi 501s and Adidas track jackets as my theatre superstar years. But no need to drift off the fashion file at hand here. This column is supposed to be talking Fernie fashion! What is Fernie fashion? What can we learn from Fernie’s fashion leaders? Number one, fashion has to have a weather functionality component. See Exhibit A. Number two, fashion in Fernie is “redneck chic.” See Exhibit B. And thirdly, the most important lesson, is that fashion is an expression of your individual style. Dress for yourself, or dress like the masses, it’s up to you.

FERNIE BREWING COMPANY Gord Demaniuk first came to Fernie a little over four years ago to work at Fernie Brewing Company. “I had heard that they were looking for someone, and I was on the market for a new opportunity and the rest is history,” he remembers. Gord started about three weeks later, and the brewery has not stopped growing ever since. “I like to think I had a little something to do with it,” he adds. Gord has an extensive background in the industry, beginning with a summer job while in university in Saskatoon with Carling O’Keefe. From here he moved to Edmonton to work with Molsons, where he worked his way up to Assistant Brew Master. After these two companies merged, Gord moved on and started a microbrewery in Canmore, AB (Bow Valley Brewery). “We were a little ahead of the curve,” Gord says. “And unfortunately, ended up closing down.” He continued as a consultant to breweries until he discovered the little gem known as FBC. “I felt that FBC was a lot more. Murray is such a driven guy when it comes to marketing and sales, and production was going along really well. It seemed like all the pieces were here to become successful. I worked on the beers a little bit here and there. Now, we’re doing about 2.5 times the volume and have doubled the capacity of the brewery. It’s great being a part of a small family run business like this, so tied in with the community. And it’s interesting to see how in the last few years we have attracted so many visitors to our tasting and tap room from around the world. We are a part of the tourism draw. It’s been exciting to see this kind of growth of our business.”

MARK 11 PHOTOGRAPHY Gord recognizes that while the support locally is growing, “You can’t go into too many places without seeing our beer on tap!” it’s also an exciting industry to be in right now in Canada. Microbrews are becoming increasingly popular, and it’s impressive to see how FBC has made a name for itself nationally. “We just try to make the best beer we can possibly make, that’s our goal and hopefully we get recognized for it,” says Gord. “But at the end of the day, I just enjoy seeing people enjoying our beer.” Q. EMBRACE YOUR INNER FOODIE THIS WINTER IN FERNIE BY CHEF BARRIE ELLIOTT Winter brings with it a fresh nip in the air, a yearning for hot chai lattes, piping hot broths and heart-warming dishes that make the coldest of toes warm after a long day of getting radical on the ski hill or bombing down a cross-country trail. In the winter I always have soups, stews or roasts cooking in the kitchen accompanied by winter root vegetables like rutabaga, yams and parsnips. I like trying some Indian, Moroccan or Spanish flavours to spice up my next soup or stew. I believe it’s important to concentrate the culinary creativity in this town by sourcing and buying from local farms and connecting the farms to the local foodie community of Fernie. With food festivals and competitions, CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program and local fall fair. I want to see this town turn into a world-class culinary destination.

We are lucky to have so many talented chefs and wonderful restaurants in this small town. Here’s a list of where to eat in Fernie along with some of my favourite dishes.

Did you know you have a taste bud call Umami? Umami may be the culinary new bud on the block of the 21st century. The term combines the Japanese characters for delicious and taste, and it’s the name for the fifth basic taste, after sweet, sour, bitter, and salty, an otherwise difficult-todescribe kind of savouriness associated with seared meats, miso soup, cheese, and tomatoes. To Western ears, the word is soothing and mysterious!

Nevados - Pork Arepa’s, a little corn cake stuffed with braised pork, pickled onions and avocado are a great little snack with one of their creative margaritas. Authentically homemade tortilla soup and fall-off-thebone, sweet and sour Tamarind ribs. Yamagoya - House salad has a nice mixture of agedashi tofu, daikon cucumber and kimchi with a creamy sesame seed dressing, Scallop Aburi – this is nigiri sushi where the fish is partially grilled (topside) and partially raw. And melts in your mouth. If miso soup won’t warm your toes, try the hot pot! Northern - Pickle burger hand pressed with deep fried pickle, white cheddar, bacon and dill aioli served with two sides! Spiced calamari is great to share with a jug of one of their cocktails, Northern rice bowls with

Chop all vegetables. Add olive oil and saute onions and garlic over medium heat until translucent in a big soup pot. Add jalapenos, leeks, celery and mushrooms saute for ten minutes. Add white wine and reduce by half then add chicken stock and cream simmer for 20 minutes and blend. Add salt and pepper to taste.

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 4 cups beef broth 1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/2 cup chopped dried apricots 1/2 cup golden raisins 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint 1/2 cup toasted almond slivers Method Preheat oven to 325째. Heat olive oil in a large roasting pan set over medium-high heat. Sprinkle roast with sea salt and pepper. Sear roast in pan, about four minutes per side. Remove from pan, and place on a platter. Add all large chopped vegetables to pan, and cook, stirring constantly, about three minutes. Combine paprika, cumin, and cinnamon in a small bowl; add to vegetables, and cook, stirring constantly, about two more minutes. Add broth, and return roasts to roasting pan. Cover with lid, and bake 30-45min or until internal temperature 135째 for medium rare. Remove elk from pot, and place on a platter; tent with aluminum foil to keep warm. Add chickpeas to liquid, and place over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until chickpeas are warm. Stir in remaining ingredients. Slice elk into portions, and spoon liquid and vegetables over elk.

FERNIE LODGING COMPANY I moved to Fernie with my partner three years ago looking for a ski change after spending the previous few years working long hours in advertising back in Australia. We wanted to find a quiet little town that hadn’t been taken over by Australians yet (good luck!) and had just planned to stay for the season but of course, were convinced to stay for a summer and haven’t left yet! I’ve worked at Fernie Lodging Company since I first arrived here, starting at the front desk and now working on the management team and handling the marketing and sales. I’ve definitely noticed changes in the industry in my time here. Summers are getting busier and more people are starting to recognize Fernie as a year-round destination but winter is still what we are known for. I think Fernie Lodging Company, and Fernie as a whole, learned a lot of lessons last season and I’m excited to see what this season holds as we really showcase everything there is to see and do in Fernie throughout the winter season. We have so much more than just the ski hill to offer, and as a community it’s important that we harness all the resources and talent in this town so that locals and visitors alike know that Fernie has something for everyone, all year round. I’d like to see Fernie keep evolving and diversifying whilst still retaining the charm and history that is ever present here. I love how just when you think we have every activity under the sun, something else pops up each season and there are always people willing to explore and try new things. This is such a special place and I feel lucky to be a part of this community.

This will be my fourth winter in Fernie. My wife was raised in the Kootenays. She can hike a mountain and gut a fish, and I wanted the same upbringing for my two daughters. Professionally I also saw an opportunity in Fernie. The building sector has an amazing energy and is open to innovative construction and design. Scenic new developments such as Alpine Trails, Montane and The Cedars are raising the standard on mountain community growth and providing unique opportunities for local builders. Fernie is also small enough that you really get to know and trust the people you work with. I’ve been building homes for twelve years. My career started with large-scale commercial jobs at an architecture firm in Calgary. Four years of doing technical drawings and working alongside architects and contractors taught me a great deal about design and construction. Eventually I ventured out on my own, incorporating Element Homes in 2003. I have been very fortunate to be involved in some pretty cool projects in my career. The residential construction industry is in the midst of some big changes. 2015 saw the implementation of significant revisions to the BC Building Code. Homes are required to be better insulated and more air tight. Interior air quality is becoming more of a consideration, to the benefit of the occupants and the longevity of the home. It’s an exciting time to be working with clients, trades people, suppliers and local building authorities to come up with cost effective solutions to make homes more energy efficient. With energy costs on the rise and

FERNIE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I grew up less than three hours from Fernie on the southern Alberta prairie. I am, or at least I thought I was a prairie girl. So much so, my father pulled me aside before I moved to Fernie and said, “Are you sure you want to live in the mountains? It is going to be a lot different, the weather, the views.” It was a fair concern. I have been known to get claustrophobic in the mountains. But, I have been here for just over a year now and every day I look out my front window at Mount Fernie and think, this is great and every day feels like a holiday. Living in Fernie has allowed me to pursue a number of passions. From finally getting to work at a ski hill and being a ski bum (sort of), to helping others pursue their goals. I get to ski mid-week again; the last time I did that I was skipping class at Montana State University to go ski at Bridger Bowl. I get to teach at the College of the Rockies, to coach with the Elk Valley Dolphin Swim Club, and to support local businesses through my role with the Chamber of Commerce. Fernie has a lot to offer. I think we will see more people look for communities like Fernie when seeking work-life balance. From guided tours to our food and beverage offerings there is huge opportunity for the service sector to cater to locals and visitors looking to enjoy their time away from work. The sense of community here is growing as well. You just have to attend one of the local races or Wednesday socials. I am excited to be in Fernie and part of the community. I think as our service industry embraces this

ELK VALLEY TRANSIT SYSTEM The Elk Valley Transit System facilitates travel between Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood. Transit picks up at three locations in Fernie: the Elk Valley Hospital, Fernie Community

Centre and College of the Rockies first thing in the morning, mid-day and evening, beginning at 8:30am through 5:30pm. There is also a South Country Loop, running through the Elk Valley and South Country communities on Thursdays twice a day. Health Connections provides transportation for medical appointments on Wednesdays and Fridays, leaving at 9am at the Fernie Hospital and arriving at the Tamarack Mall or Cranbrook Hospital at 10:15am. Transportation departs Cranbrook at 3pm from the Cranbrook Hospital, arriving in Fernie at 4pm. The Lizard Range surrounding Fernie Alpine Resort offers exciting and challenging terrain to the experienced traveller. There is a real danger of avalanches outside the ski boundaries. Skiers must be prepared to travel on their terms, there is no avalanche control or ski patrol rescue. The slopes are steep and the snow deep, travelling outside the boundary is recommended only for those people experienced and equipped to deal with serious avalanche dangers.

Fernie Alpine Resort is a mountain with some very steep terrain. Snow storms deposit huge amounts of fresh snow on the Lizard Range and Lizard Ridge. Avalanche conditions within the ski area can become extreme. During hazardous periods, areas within the ski area are closed until avalanche control work is complete and the skiing is safe. Be aware of closures and stay out of closed areas so that avalanche control teams can do their work. Lift pass suspensions may result.
