Laliberte Performs Senior Capstone Project

Musical Theatre major Sarah Laliberte took to the Sale Theatre stage in February to perform FlashesofLife: TheStoryofLeeMiller, ModelTurnedPhotographer, a one-person show she wrote, produced, and performed for her senior capstone project The play chronologically tells the story of Lee Miller, a New York fashion model and Paris fashion and fine arts photographer who became a war photographer for Vogueduring World War II.

Laliberte featured personal photographs in her show including one of her father, who unexpectedly died of cancer during the spring of her freshman year “He was never able to see me perform so this is a dedication to him He really meant a lot to me,” said Laliberte

Bryan Slater Will Be 2023 Bryan Will Be Commencement Keynote Speaker Commencement Keynote

Virginia Secretary of Labor and Ferrum College alumnus Bryan Slater ’82 will be the keynote speaker for the College’s 107th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Slater has over 20 years of political experience serving the public, non-profit and private sectors, most recently as Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management at the U.S. Department of Labor and Assistant Secretary of Administration for the U S Department of Transportation under President Donald Trump.

“The foundation for my career began at Ferrum,” said Slater, who credits Ferrum as the kick start to his career “It’s where I got involved in politics and where my interest in government and politics began.”

Ferrum College recognized its former head softball coach, Vickie Van Kleeck, by naming the new softball complex in her honor. The two-story facility includes a team locker room, a coaches’ locker room, a working pressbox, a concession stand and restrooms. Seating includes chair backs and open-area concrete platforms between the building and the backstop

“It is clear that the Vickie Van Kleeck Softball Complex states that Ferrum softball is no longer an afterthought,” said Julie Thomas ’96 during the ribbon cutting for the new softball complex at Ferrum College, which was held Saturday, March 25.

Dinner Theatre Event Raises More Than Dinner Theatre Event Raises More Than $4,000 for Ferrum College Theatre Arts for Ferrum College Theatre Arts

More than $4,000 was raised for Ferrum College Theatre Arts during the “An Evening of Dinner and Theatre With Mark Twain” event written by and starring award-winning playwright and Professor Emeritus R. Rex Stephenson which was held March 15 on campus to coincide with the SML Gives community fundraising event

The evening started with a delicious dinner in the Blue Ridge Mountain Room where cast members served the showgoers. Dinner was followed by the performance, which featured a mix of stories from Twain’s life, humorous short stories from his writings, and music from Twain’s time period performed by the cast of students, staff and community members

Ferrum College was proud to host the 2023 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships, which were held Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, at The Berglund Center in Roanoke, VA.

This year marked the second time in the past five years that the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships was hosted by Ferrum College in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"The opportunity to host the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships for the second time as an institution is a testament to the hard work of our staff who ran a phenomenal NCAA Tournament in 2019," said Ferrum College Head Men's Wrestling Coach Logan Meister '17

Social Media Influencer Sydel Curry-Lee Encourages Students to “Find Things That Encourages Students to “Find Things That Bring You Joy” Bring Joy”

On March 2, mental health advocate and internationally-known social media lifestyle influencer Sydel Curry-Lee spoke to Ferrum College students and employees about balancing college life, mental health, and athletics Curry-Lee, who was on campus for Mental Health Awareness Day and Women’s Leadership Day, has over 700,000 Instagram followers with whom she shares her life while emphasizing mental health advocacy.

Curry-Lee offered advice to students who are struggling with mental health. “Take advantage of the resources that are available on campus Every school has a counselor, and it’s a great place to start."

Meet Assistant Director of Recruiting & Assistant of Recruiting & Outreach Justin Muse Outreach Muse

Alumnus Justin Muse ’05 recently joined the Ferrum College admissions team as the assistant director of recruiting and outreach. In his new role, Muse loves working with people, telling his story, and sharing with others why Ferrum College is so wonderful Muse, who has a bachelor’s in sports management and a master’s in human services and executive leadership, joined the College staff in 2007 and most recently served as director of student activities.

Muse plays multiple instruments, including the trumpet, piano, bass and lead guitar, and he loves to educate and entertain others He was born and raised in Rocky Mount and loves living in southwest Virginia.
