A 12 DAY FREE ARTS AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL
CAIRNS
As part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, preliminary basketball games will be held in Cairns. To extend the Commonwealth Games experience beyond the sporting stadiums, Festival 2018 has been designed as a bold arts and cultural program to galvanise and inspire audiences around the region.
Here in Cairns the centre of Festival 2018 will be the Live Site on Cairns Esplanade, which will buzz from 10am to 10pm for 12 days with a multitude of free events. A major feature of Festival 2018 Cairns is Beginnings, a free ticketed, locally produced musical theatre performance held at Munro Martin Parklands. Visual arts exhibitions will also be held at the Cairns Art Gallery, Umi Arts and the Tanks Arts Centre.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE 12 DAYS FROM 10 ’TIL 10 From Wednesday 4 to Sunday 15 April Cairns Esplanade is the place to be. Enjoy the best in live music, sport on the big screens and food and drinks at the al fresco dining area.
A SPACE TO CELEBRATE Local artists have designed artworks, installations and decorations to create a magical space to celebrate Festival 2018 and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. 6
PERFORMANCES The Cat Empire, Kate Miller-Heidke, Archie Roach, Amy Shark, Mau Power, King Social, Bullhorn and a huge list of our local favourites. Never before has Cairns enjoyed such a large line-up of free live music!
WATCH THE GAMES Big screens will be positioned all around the Live Site including a swim-up big screen in the Esplanade Lagoon so you won’t miss a moment of the live Commonwealth Games sporting action!
GET CREATIVE The Saltwater Basketry Group will be assisting the public from 10am - 2pm every day to collaborate on Friendship Circles, individual woven pieces of art that will come together to form a large-scale installation.
LIGHT & LOVE This installation, created by local artist Adrian Wolf, celebrates the success of One Million Stars to End Violence project. The project, founded by Maryann Talia Pau, has encouraged communites to come together to weave stars to inspire light, hope and peace in the world. Adrian’s artwork, ‘Light and Love’ is a celebration of colour and community connection and features stars made by local star weavers.
BIG DESIGN AL FRESCO DINING The Esplanade road will be closed to traffic between Aplin and Shields streets to create a huge al fresco dining space. Relax with friends and family over a drink and a range of delectable food from your Esplanade traders and watch the sporting action on the big screens.
An outdoor gallery of temporary public artworks designed by students aged 15 to 17 will be installed along the Live Site. Big Design provides a pathway for young people to learn about creating concepts for public artworks while working alongside experienced local artists who assisted with the development, design, fabrication and installation phases of the process. 7
