More than 2 million children have been caught up in the conflict in Syria. They have been forced the flee their homes, they are cold, hungry, desperate. UNICEF is working on the ground in Syria and neighbouring countries to protect them.

UNICEF is also present in Perugia, with the second edition of ‘Speak about me’, because this emergency so close to home hasn’t yet received the attention it deserves.

Green journalism.

Towards a network of environmental journalists A number of recent initiatives have shown that environmental journalists, bloggers and communicators in Italy need to reassess their assumptions and get their act together in order to make their online presence more incisive.

Good intentions are a useful starting point but a hard-nosed and wellcoordinated communications strategy can really make a difference. A meet-up to lay the foundations of just such a strategy, to be followed by the creation of a committee to promote the association of environmental journalists, bloggers and communicators.

A story still to tell: Walter Tobagi The annual A Story Still to Tell award invites the submission of short articles and/ or videos on the circumstances surrounding the murder of an Italian journalist.

The 2013 award is dedicated to the memory of Walter Tobagi, murdered in 1980 in Milan. The 2007 first edition of the award was dedicated to Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovotin, the 2008 second edition to Enzo Baldoni, the 2009 third edition to Giancarlo Siani, journalist of the Naples daily Il Mattino murdered in Naples in 1985 at the age of 26 while investigating local organised crime, the 2010 fourth edition to Maria Grazia Cutuli, journalist of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera killed in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2001, and the 2011 fifth edition to Peppino Impastato, killed in a bomb explosion in Sicily in 1978, the sixth edition to Mauro Rostagno. The prize fund is 3,500 euros in the video category, 1,500 euros in the written category.

Social network analysis for journalists using the Twitter API Michael Bauer

In this workshop we will use Twitter data from around the journalism festival and analyse it to reveal connections between all those involved in the festival, including speakers and attendees. Workshop participants will be invited to do the following: collect data from the Twitter API based on a specific hashtag or keyword; identify and record interactions within the dataset; analyse and visualize the dataset using Gephi. Based on this simple exercise, participants will be able to perform their own Twitter data collection as well as social network analysis on similar datasets. Please download the Gephi visualisation software from gephi.org and install it on your computer in advance. Participants are required to have basic social media and spreadsheet skills.

How to start a news agency in a war zone in 8 days In March 2011, Brian Conley and Louis Abelman journeyed to Benghazi to launch a news agency run by Libyan journalists. Entering Libya through the Egyptian border in the east, and arriving just three weeks after the revolution began, they worked with local citizens at a media center set up by the opposition before being forced to flee because of an imminent attack by Gaddafi’s forces. Brian will discuss what journalists and news agencies can learn from this experience two years later, including the evolving field of online and, in particular, mobile reporting.

Data journalism in southern Europe Data journalism has been growing enormously in recent years even in countries where public access to information and data is not granted by a Freedom of Information Act, as is the case with many southern European countries. Data journalists have been working side by side with civic initiatives promoting open access and transparency, and have started producing interesting and original data investigations. Such investigations are finding space even in major news outlets, which are starting to recognize the added value of data-driven articles.

In countries often afflicted by corruption and lack of transparency both in politics and in the public administration, data journalism represents an even more strategic opportunity to enhance media work in the public interest. The panel will consider examples from Spain, Italy, Croatia and Bosnia.

Italy is a highly seismic country, on the same level perhaps as the state of California, Japan, Turkey, the Pacific coast of South America and many other areas of the world.

Earthquakes occur time after time, in repeated cycles throughout history. But in many countries they are still perceived as occasional events, natural disasters that occur without any possibility of reducing the risk associated with them, an attitude resulting in very little prevention and a certain carelessness about safety in public buildings, including schools. In this panel we’ll go through three different stories. The first one is that of L’Aquila, the Italian town destroyed by an earthquake in April 2009 which resulted in 309 people being killed, including many students sleeping at the university student dormitory.

In March 2011 The New York Times introduced a metered paywall similar to the system used for years by The Financial Times. In October 2012 the Swiss NZZ set up its own paywall.
