More than 2 million children have been caught up in the conflict in Syria. They have been forced the flee their homes, they are cold, hungry, desperate. UNICEF is working on the ground in Syria and neighbouring countries to protect them. UNICEF is also present in Perugia, with the second edition of ‘Speak about me’, because this emergency so close to home hasn’t yet received the attention it deserves. 8

PANEL DISCUSSION
Green journalism. Towards a network of environmental journalists A number of recent initiatives have shown that environmental journalists, bloggers and communicators in Italy need to reassess their assumptions and get their act together in order to make their online presence more incisive. Good intentions are a useful starting point but a hard-nosed and wellcoordinated communications strategy can really make a difference. A meet-up to lay the foundations of just such a strategy, to be followed by the creation of a committee to promote the association of environmental journalists, bloggers and communicators.

PANEL DISCUSSION
Who’s in and who’s out Many Italian journalists have no job. Many others work as journalists but have no contract, no job security and not much hope of ever getting either. Talent. expertise, diligence can count for surprisingly little in determining who’s in and who’s out. A second annual gathering of the so-called giornalisti precari, an opportunity perhaps to channel some of the widespread disappointment, disillusionment and anger into something constructive. Representatives of the Ordine Nazionale dei Giornalisti and the Federazione Nazionale della Stampa Italiana will take part. The event will be coordinated by Vittorio Pasteris and Ciro Pellegrino.

PANEL DISCUSSION
The state of data journalism in 2013 Data journalism is evolving at a rapid pace. Since last year’s International Journalism Festival we have seen many data stories breaking and data projects appearing around the world. We’ve seen countless tools, services and initiatives to support work in this emerging field. The opening debate at this year’s edition of the School of Data Journalism will bring together leading data journalists and advocates to discuss the past year’s advances in the field and what the future holds. What were the big data stories of the year? What were the key technological developments and projects and what do these developments mean for journalists and newsrooms in Europe? Where is data journalism today and where is it headed?

Data and investigations: collaborating across borders How can the different cultures of investigative journalism and hacking be brought together. What techniques and knowledge can developers bring to investigative journalism? How can we learn from and build on other projects to produce good investigative journalism around data platforms? How can collaboration across borders be encouraged through these platforms in spite of the guarded nature of journalists’ work and reluctance to share a story with others? How can these platforms be kept alive given the journalists tendency to move to new stories once they have done the initial “scoop”? Finally, how can we make data platforms more attractive to the general public through interactivity, storytelling and personalisation?

Comparisons with other Western countries will be made and the potential for the right of access to improve the independence and effectiveness of journalism will be shown. Data journalism in southern Europe Data journalism has been growing enormously in recent years even in countries where public access to information and data is not granted by a Freedom of Information Act, as is the case with many southern European countries. Data journalists have been working side by side with civic initiatives promoting open access and transparency, and have started producing interesting and original data investigations. Such investigations are finding space even in major news outlets, which are starting to recognize the added value of data-driven articles. In countries often afflicted by corruption and lack of transparency both in politics and in the public administration, data journalism represents an even more strategic opportunity to enhance media work in the public interest. The panel will consider examples from Spain, Italy, Croatia and Bosnia.

Public service media: the challenges ahead Vittorio Argento
Michael Mullane
The combined forces of technology, new audience behaviour, economics and globalisation are redrawing the media landscape. Audiences are more fragmented than ever in terms of numbers, demographic groups, viewing, listening and reading habits. The internet and social networks have transformed the gathering and distribution of news, as well as empowering everyone to publish and to exert greater control over the content they receive. How are public service media adapting to these changes in order to maintain quality, uphold their traditional editorial values and to continue serving the needs of their audiences? It will be about the big ideas but also the practical skills journalists need and the real world problems they face. Reporting on earthquakes with a data-driven approach Ettore Di Cesare
Elisabetta Tola
Italy is a highly seismic country, on the same level perhaps as the state of California, Japan, Turkey, the Pacific coast of South America and many other areas of the world. Earthquakes occur time after time, in repeated cycles throughout history. But in many countries they are still perceived as occasional events, natural disasters that occur without any possibility of reducing the risk associated with them, an attitude resulting in very little prevention and a certain carelessness about safety in public buildings, including schools. In this panel we’ll go through three different stories. The first one is that of L’Aquila, the Italian town destroyed by an earthquake in April 2009 which resulted in 309 people being killed, including many students sleeping at the university student dormitory. Google - friend or foe to the news industry? The past year or so, especially in continental Europe, has seen a ‘war of nerves’ between Google and news publishers over the issue of content protection. Farreaching agreements have been signed - at times seemingly more armistice than lasting peace. Are services such as Google News an existential threat to news publishers? Is the current fairly generalised economic malaise of the news industry ‘Google’s fault’ or is it rather the consequence of radical technological change and a subsequent metamorphosis in news consumption habits and corporate advertising strategy?

Siria: civil war or media war? Susan Dabbous

What should information professionals do when activists replace journalists in the production of news? The dramatic conflict in Syria is a war fought on two fronts: military and media. The difficulty in getting first-hand information is that everything related to the real and actual course of events is filtered by a dense news network and more or less certified sources, which often rely on testimonials or videos put on the web by people who have an interest in giving their version of events. When it comes to women in politics (like Hilary Clinton) some parts of the Western media still give a perhaps surprising amount of attention to the way they are dressed and the number of wrinkles on their face. Press freedom in Eastern Europe For years, media freedom in Eastern Europe has been a cause for concern for many international organizations which have fought for the freedom of expression and information. The cases of Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria are emblematic, while the Balkan countries are a special case as they experienced a transition period from a post-war to a European context. However, the efforts of the younger generation to find their own independent voice - often made possible by the widespread use of new media - offer encouraging signs for the future.

Citizens’ rights: the end of democracy? Thierry Vissol
2013 is the European Year of Citizens. However, the concept of a European citizen is not crystal clear. In addition to the crisis that alienates citizens from the European project, the role of the citizen in the European decision-making process remains opaque, as does the kind of citizenship Europeans benefit from, what kind of rights they have, the difference between national and European rights. The EU decision-making process seems to take little account of the citizens, who are often not aware of what is at stake. The current economic crisis goes hand in hand with a crisis in democracy. To pay or not to pay(wall), that’s the question Steve Buttry
Antonio Rossano
In March 2011 The New York Times introduced a metered paywall similar to the system used for years by The Financial Times. In October 2012 the Swiss NZZ set up its own paywall. Many other newspapers are thinking of - or about to do the same; take for example the various rumours about paywalls at The Guardian and indeed at the biggest-selling Italian dailies La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera. The financial results for those newspapers which have erected a paywall seem broadly encouraging, even if the additional revenue does not match what the print version can provide. Not forgetting the ADV wall issue, with possible collateral loss of advertising revenue. So what’s the current state of play, in Italy and worldwide? The evident impossibility of impartiality, little interest even in token objectivity, each and every media organisation - large or small, public or private - diligently and doggedly adhering to a given political agenda, journalists employed not as arbiters of fact but as mere press release mouthpieces, as much a part of the ossified and discredited establishment as the politicians and public figures they’re supposed to be keeping an eye on. Witness By laeffe (the new channel of Feltrinelli) and LA7, four documentaries filmed by Michael Mann, the director of Collateral and Public Enemies - Witness: Juarez, Witness: Libya, Witness: Rio, Witness: Sudan. Drugs, poverty, violence, corruption, arms trafficking and ethnic war have created some of the most dangerous hot spots on the planet. Witness follows the new generation of photojournalists in conflict areas in Mexico, Libya, Brazil, Sudan. What makes a journalist go closer to the action when everyone else is looking for shelter?
Witness: Sudan French photojournalist Veronique de Viguerie, who was pregnant at the time, spent time with the Arrow Boys, an improvised and courageous group of farmers who organised themselves to protect their families and fight against Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which has killed thousands of people in Sudan. 22.00 | Sala dei Notari
Witness: Libya Michael Christopher Brown went to Libya five times during the conflict that led to the deposition of Gaddafi. With the revolution now over but the situation very delicate due to constant infighting, Brown returns to Libya after his previous trip with photojournalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros. He remembers the feeling in Misrata: “The city was like a shooting gallery that day”. That day, an exploding mortar killed Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros and wounded Brown.

Innovating in tough situations “Innovate or die” is often easier said than done, especially when you’re working for bureaucratic legacy news organizations or underfunded startups. For five years, a economic-financial-democratic crisis has shaken Europe. Austerity, unemployment and political mistakes in the EU’s timing and answers have created centrifugal forces which threaten 60 years of patient and difficult European construction. Good north, bad south? Good grief! Alessia Gallione

Once upon a time the north of Italy was trumpeted as the moral capital of Italy. The south of Italy, more precisely anywhere south of Rome, was where the barbarians came from. Recent criminal investigations and corruption scandals in Milan have revealed this neat dichotomy to be laughably false. Two new books, Il Celeste by Gianni Barbacetto and Dossier Expo by Alessia Gallione, shine further light on this hypocrisy and complacency.
