» From the Artistic Director Welcome to the Ballet! In dance as in life, every day brings something new. Whether it’s a chance to look at something with a fresh perspective, or the challenge of creating something bold and unexpected, dance is always evolving and innovating. I’m delighted that our 39th Season offers all of that.
Mihailo Djuric Artistic Director
As you will see today, this company continues to grow artistically and technically. But today’s performance is just one part of our incredibly diverse season, which is brimming with rich, vibrant stories and groundbreaking new works. From the magnificent and breathtaking impact of main stage programs at PPAC and The Vets, to the power and proximity that our Black Box offers, this company, and its dancers, and choreographers, produces a range and scale like no other.
As a cultural institution, the artistic product of Festival Ballet reaches far beyond the walls of any theater. Our educational programs reach thousands of children each season, with in-school workshops fostering artistic expression, physical fitness, and self-confidence in places where dance education has all but disappeared from the curriculum. Some of my favorite moments are seeing the pure joy on the faces of students as they participate in our programs and delight in the power of dance. I’m thrilled that you are joining us for this performance, and I encourage you to explore and support all of the ways that Festival Ballet impacts our culture and community with living, moving, ever-changing art.

» Company History Originally named Festival Ballet of Rhode Island, the company was founded in 1978 by two former principal dancers with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet - Christine Hennessey and Winthrop Corey. The pair would lead the company for almost twenty years, establishing it as a powerhouse in the New England dance community and one of the strongest regional companies in the country. As the company grew, so too did its repertory. In its first years Ms. Hennessey and Mr. Corey were able to attract big names to Rhode Island, staging ballets by preeminent choreographers such as George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, and Arthur Mitchell (Mr. Mitchell and Ms. de Mille both personally came to set their ballets—Rhythmetron and Golden Age, respectively—on the young company). The FBRI Nutcracker became a fixture in the holiday season in Providence and in additional touring locations around New England. Ms. Hennessey led the company until her death in 1997; her daughter Elizabeth (a leading dancer in the company for many years) acted as Interim Artistic Director while the Board of Trustees searched for a replacement. In 1998, choreographer and dancer Mihailo "Misha" Djuric was tapped to lead the company. Mr. Djuric's dogged pursuit of artistic excellence (combined with his "tough love" approach to directing) helped the now-established company to reach newer, broader audiences with a more diverse repertory, mixing contemporary and classical choreography, and incorporating emerging choreographers. One of Mr Djuric's first actions was to bring the FBP School under the wing of the company, in order to establish it as a destination for dancers training for a professional career in ballet. The school has continued to produce dancers who join companies around the world, including many who have danced with the FBP Company. In 2001, recognizing the tremendous role that the City of Providence plays in the artistic fabric of Rhode Island, the company moved to the historic East Side of the capital city, and changed its name to Festival Ballet Providence. The company would follow the lead of other regional dance companies around the world by constructing its own performance space, distinct in form and function from the expansive auditoriums that large, full-length ballets often

require. The new "Black Box Theatre" allowed FBP to present mixed programs of new, contemporary choreography in the intimacy of a small venue. The "Up Close on Hope" series instantly became an audience favorite. The company now performs more than 25 productions each season in the Black Box Theatre. FBP never lost sight of its roots, continuing to stage full length ballets beloved the world over: Giselle, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Esmeralda, The Sleeping Beauty are among the classics that FBP performed, in addition to many works by George Balanchine, Antony Tudor, and other neoclassical and contemporary choreographers. In 2003, Viktor Plotnikov, then a principal dancer with Boston Ballet, began choreographing for FBP, in what would become one of the most productive and artistically diverse relationships in FBP's history. Mr. Plotnikov’s contemporary adaptation of Cinderella as well as his captivating stagings of Carmen and Widow's Broom earned him critical acclaim. The company toured in 2006 throughout Venezuela in the 1st Internacional Ballet del Siglio XXI Festival. In 2011, FBP was invited to perform in the Belgrade International Dance Festival, joining ballet companies from around the world (including Nederlands Dans Theater, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Royal Swedish Ballet, among others) in an event that was televised live throughout Europe; the FBP tour was sponsored by the United States Embassy. After the FBP performance (an all-Plotnikov program that included the world-premiere of Surrender), Mr. Djuric was awarded the "Vip Invites" Award from the Serbian Ministry of Culture; he was the first laureate to receive the award, which recognizes outstanding Serbian artists working outside of the country.
