The Government is pleased to continue supporting Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Adelaide Cabaret Festival shines a light on our city and our state to an international audience and plays a significant part in reinforcing Adelaide’s reputation as a great festival city. This year’s Festival marks a changing of the guards at the artistic helm. ALI McGREGOR
EDDIE PERFECT
I realised very early in my first season at this Festival in 2009, that I had found my heart. After performing with companies and festivals around the world the Adelaide Cabaret Festival was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. Every year, I come back and witness genredefying performance art, intimate theatre, and voices that make my heart feel like it will burst into a thousand pieces. This year, Eddie and I have put together a program of artists that we LOVE. A group of people who are taking this genre and developing it into the most visceral, poignant and sometimes anarchic art form. Cabaret has a long history and an even more exciting future. In this year’s program we are celebrating everything that cabaret can be: political satire, theatre, songbook songs, storytelling, burlesque and comedy. We’ve also added a family gala to inspire a life-long love of songs, stories and laughter. I’m so excited to share our inaugural season with the incredibly savvy theatre-going audience of my adopted creative home!
“What is cabaret?” After more than a decade of writing, composing, performing (and now curating) cabaret, I still wince at this question. For me, it’s cabaret’s refusal to be defined that makes it such a rewarding art-form. Ali and I could have used our first program to plant a defining flag in the sand of WHAT CABARET IS, but instead we’ve decided to explore WHAT CABARET COULD BE. We packed our bags, went searching, and this is what we found; a program full of the best cabaret artists working in the world today who, like us, are fascinated with WHAT COMES NEXT. We consider our first program a tribute to what the form can (and must) be; original, smart, intimate and, above all else, immediate. We want you to feel as electrified and moved as we were upon first seeing the work of these artists. We can’t wait for you to see WHAT COMES NEXT!

THE WHARF REVUE CELEBRATING 15 YEARS AUS
Written and created by JONATHAN BIGGINS, DREW FORSYTHE and PHILLIP SCOTT
THERE AIN’T NO PARTY LIKE A WHARF REVUE PARTY Over 15 years and 21 shows, they’ve mercilessly mocked all the usual suspects. We’ve watched Howard Tampa with refugees, Rudd give pennies from Kevin, Gillard refuse to be lectured by “that man”, “that man” scrap the carbon tax, stop the boats and – um – get the budget back into surplus... But no one has been able to outplay, outwit or outlast The Wharf Revue. So, we’re throwing a party and everyone’s invited. This year, The Wharf Revue will be a parade of past and present indignitaries – a who’s who of 21st century embarrassments, from the politicians to the celebrities – all skewered on the stake of seriously side-splitting satirical silliness and musical mayhem. Who will make the cut? Who has the numbers in the caucus room? It’s anyone’s guess. “The Revue is an equal opportunity satire – no political party is left unstoned, nor cultural shibboleth unmauled.” Stagenoise

A MUSICAL HARMONY OF POLITICAL DISCORD There was a moment in Germany, between the two great world wars, when cabaret came alive. Songwriters and poets described it as ‘dancing on a volcano’, which then exploded so rapidly into the worst excesses of Nazism. HARRY SHEARER AND JUDITH OWEN THIS INFERNAL RACKET USA
He is a comedy writer-actor who voices some of our favourite characters in The Simpsons and is equally famed for his role in the cult mockumentary This is Spinal Tap. She is a soulful singer and confessional songwriter who has collaborated with Ruby Wax and toured with Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry. Her approach is empathic and cautionary whilst his is merciless ridicule. They met, married and make musical mirth. Join Harry and Judith and their legendary studio musicians as they mix, match, and butt heads with their musical takes on life and the noise that surrounds and consumes us all. “Few have come close to matching the emotional insights and compositional brilliance of Carole King and James Taylor.” The Independent UK

BOLD, BRASH AND DELICIOUSLY BAWDY Loved in downtown New York, Bridget Everett brings her funny yet gut-wrenching and outrageous performance to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. This ferocious talent has developed a cult following with her edgy, sexed-up, punk rock cabaret. Each performance is as explosive as it is unpredictable. One of the funniest people in New York, Everett’s onscreen credits include Inside Amy Schumer, Two Broke Girls, Sex And The City and Trainwreck. “Multiply the mouthy, flesh-jiggling early Bette Midler by one hundred, give her the super-plus-size figure and fashion sense of Divine, the John Waters Diva, and the manners of a Flintstone, and you’ve got a rough approximation of Bridget Everett…” New York Times

Featuring Luke Gallagher Michael Smallwood Nigel Ubrihien
Written by Toby Francis Directed by Neil Gooding Musical direction & arrangements by Andrew Worboys Production design by Lauren Peters
INTOXICATING ROCK COVERS BY A TRUE ORIGINAL Toby Francis (Blokelahoma!, Dogfight) returns to Adelaide Cabaret Festival with his awardwinning cabaret. Lifting the curtain on ‘Bat Out of Hell’ composer Jim Steinman as he struggles to complete his stage adaptation of Peter Pan – a rock opera entitled Neverland. Boasting a collection of some of the biggest rock songs of all time, Love and Death is an epic yet intimate glimpse into the life of one of music’s greatest treasures. Set against the backdrop of unpaid royalties and lost friendships. “What Francis has done with a big bunch of Steinman songs is intoxicating.”

Introducing the internationally renowned mega-cabaret boyband hand-picked by Barbra Streisand herself to keep her music alive for generations to come. Besides reviving Barbra’s iconic power duets, this award-winning trio breathe new life into classics by The Spice Girls, Luciano Pavarotti, The Brady Bunch, Kermit the Frog and many others. Combining comic silliness with musical knowhow, and wrapped up in exquisite arrangements by Nigel Ubrihien, no megastar is beyond resuscitation – least of all Ms Streisand herself. “This is great cabaret, skewering the enthusiasms that greet Barbra’s every move!”

HIGH CULINARY ART PAIRED WITH HIGH KICKING ENTERTAINMENT This year’s dinner features a menu designed by Adelaide’s renowned father and son chefs, Peter and Chris Jarmer, offering you a taste of the past and the future. This generational gustation gets even better with matched wines from Barossa Valley favourite, Grant Burge. Celebrate the old and new with a three-course extravaganza for the senses balanced with Cabaret Festival highlights completing a nourishing menu of fine food and entertainment. All you have to do is find a date! “A dinner show, like a dinner dance, seems to belong to generations past. But when both the entertainment and the dining measure up, and even better are presented as a seamless, thematic package, the idea of a one-stop-shop beats wandering between venues on a winter night” Adelaide Now

Written & performed by John Thorn Directed by Sally Bourne
THE MASTER OF MELANCHOLY Conspiracy theorists believe the moon is a construction of man. And that when you fly to it, you discover it’s just a two-dimensional cardboard cut out. Hue Blanes and the Moon isn’t funny because it’s serious. It isn’t original because every story has been told. And the songs won’t move you because all hearts have died. Penned and performed by the virtuosic Hue Blanes and directed by Travis Cotton, this master of melancholy will break your heart. Watch him take on the Pope, the Queen and of course God. “Blanes is both a master of the piano and a gifted composer and singer”
1 hr Suitable 16+ yrs Directed by Travis Cotton
After years supporting some of the world’s finest cabaret performers including Meow Meow, Bob Downe and Caroline Nin, multi-award winning singer-song writer John Thorn deservedly steps into the spotlight. Taking the lead on vocals and piano, John is joined on stage with his talented daughter Bonnie and special guests. Featuring witty works, bittersweet ballads and songs inspired by the 1920s, John resembles such greats as Randy Newman and Hoagy Carmichael. “Thorn’s rich, deep voice whisking us away into a Gatsby-esque world... a great sense of Australian humour... an exceptional show”

It’s Lionel’s first time. You promise to be gentle, right? After a difficult break-up with his long-term boyfriend and following advice from his terrifying German therapist to ‘express himself’, Lionel has inadvertently found himself in a cabaret show. He’s now left to draw on his limited knowledge of the style and formidable Wikipedia skills to hilariously stumble his way through an hour on stage covering sex, booze, boys and mythical beasts. From the mischievous mind of writer/performer Dash Kruck. “Kruck — the dashing love child of Eddie Perfect and James Corden — is marvellous” Herald Sun

CAMP, CURVED & COMPLETELY CLOTHED CABARET
Celebrating the sassy, red-blooded female musicians of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Nichaud Fitzgibbon, Jane Clifton and Carla Lippis perform the songs of Dusty Springfield, Loretta Lynn, Nancy Sinatra, Dolly Parton, Gladys Knight and the Pips and many more. Featuring the powerful musical direction of Clare Moore on drums and Rosie Westbrook on bass, Southern Belles honours a time in history when women took hold of their lives, stories and the mic.
Yana Alana is infamous for her nude, rude and lewd cabaret appearances. In a risqué act of defiance this camp, bouffant, drag diva will appear on stage with her all-female band – fully clothed! A very special performance for those of us yearning for Yana to bear her soul but not her arse. Joined by The Paranas featuring Bec Matthews and Louise Goh with songs made famous by Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Shirley Bassey, Laurie Anderson and Joy Division.
