Adelaide Festival Centre Season 2020 – Summer Edition

Page 1

SUMMER

SEASON

Adelaide Festival Centre is the heart of the arts in South Australia. Established in 1973, it is Australia’s first capital city arts venue and hosts more than one million people annually. As well as presenting theatre, dance, music, and exhibitions, Adelaide Festival Centre creates diverse festivals to inspire, challenge, educate and entertain. We welcome audiences of all ages, experience, and cultures.

Adelaide Festival Centre is located on the traditional lands for the Kaurna people. We pay respect to ancestors and elders past, present, and emerging as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains. We honour their cultural and spiritual relationship with their country and we do so in the spirit of reconciliation.

Adelaide Festival Centre celebrates Adelaide’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music.

WELCOME TO A NEW CHAPTER FOR

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE 2

There’s so much happening in our theatres, venues, and evolving calendar of festivals and shows, that we enter a new year with a fresh approach to Season 2020. This is the summer edition. This quarterly brochure highlights what you can experience at Adelaide Festival Centre this summer – shows, exhibitions, new food and beverage offerings, and news about some of the work we’re doing behind the scenes. Every year, more than a million people come to shows, festivals and events at Adelaide Festival Centre and we look forward to welcoming new and familiar faces to our venues throughout summer. Whatever your arts and entertainment passions, we aim to surprise and delight you with a comprehensive program of work from South Australia and around the world.

We thank the Government of South Australia for their continuing support and all our partners, sponsors and home companies who contribute so much to our mutual success. We are grateful to them and also to you, our patrons and supporters. Your enthusiasm for the arts and love of live performance is at the heart of everything we do. NOUVELLE VAGUE

15TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR Parisian punk-pop-outfit Nouvelle Vague return to Adelaide Festival Centre with their unique blend of dreamy French noir cool for their 15th Anniversary tour. It was in 2004, at the height of the French Touch, that the Parisian collective, led by Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux, released its first album, taking its original concept worldwide: New Wave = Wave Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague. In just a few months, Nouvelle Vague deconstructed the notion of “the cover band” and, supported by some of the most prestigious labels (Peacefrog, Luaka Bop, Rough Trade, Pias), delighted an audience that almost forgot the original versions. With five studio albums and extensive global tours under its belt, Nouvelle Vague now celebrates its fifteenth anniversary with an Australian national tour as part of the So Frenchy So Chic series. Melodic and sensuous, don’t miss out on this captivating class act for one show only in Adelaide.

CHANGING YOUNG PEOPLE’S LIVES THROUGH THE ARTS For 20 years Adelaide Festival Centre Foundation has supported the most comprehensive and year long performing arts program in South Australia delivering on our mission of Arts of All with a focus on children and young people. Over the last two years the Foundation has provided transport and tickets to DreamBIG Children’s Festival and other live performances and workshops at Adelaide Festival Centre to over 24,000 students from city and regional schools with disadvantage. We’ve also made a commitment to support the education component of the OzAsia Festival, Australia’s only annual international arts festival comprehensively engaging with Asia. The popular Something on Saturday Kids Corner Workshops is also supported by the Foundation along with the GreenRoom Youth Membership program for young people aged 18 to 30. The Foundation has a focus on professional development. We offer a fellowship which provides a First Nations arts worker the opportunity to spend a year with Adelaide Festival Centre in programming and marketing as well as an annual scholarship for a regional student experiencing disadvantage to receive tuition and participate in Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Donating will help support these programs and create more opportunities for our young people to experience the power of the arts. If you would like to discuss a bequest or any aspect of the Foundation's activities please contact Manager of Philanthropy Robyn Brown on (08) 8216 8826.

DANCE NATION 21 FEB – 7 MAR SCOTT THEATRE Somewhere in America, an army of teenage competitive dancers is plotting world domination. One routine at a time. As the national title looms and the dancers fight it out for the lead role, their grip on reality begins to slip as they’re driven mad by ambition. Dance Nation is a crushingly funny ode to adolescence that is at once viciously honest and shockingly unhinged. Blazingly original and unsettlingly familiar, Dance Nation is a marvellous fantasia of the female that cuts very close to the bone. Bitingly clever and utterly hilarious, you’ve never seen theatre quite like this. Presented by State Theatre Company South Australia and Belvoir in association with Adelaide Festival

SUMMER

SQUEEZE 17 FEB DUNSTAN PLAYHOUSE The South London new-wave warriors return to Australia with The Songbook Tour after their 2018 sell out shows. Relive the 70s & 80s with ‘Cool for Cats’, ‘Tempted’ and ‘Up the Junction’, rarities that span their 45-year career as well as brand new material. With two critically acclaimed albums in the past three years, and a dynamic live show that has seen them headline numerous festivals in the UK (as well as sell their own shows around the world), “something of a renaissance” seems like an understatement. Presented by S4 Productions T / A MJR
