Steven Marshall MP Premier of South Australia DreamBIG Children’s Festival invites children, students, and families from across South Australia to learn, connect with others, and engage their creative skills. It is an iconic festival on the South Australian arts calendar, and has seen more than two million children participate since its establishment in 1974. This year DreamBIG Children’s Festival has a number of shows that reflect the principles of STEAM (integrating ‘A’ for arts with STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths). STEAM takes thinking and teaching to the next level, replacing limitations with innovation by combining traditional learning with art. Creative thinking is vital to the future success of our state. We want our next generations to think differently, approach problems in dynamic and creative ways, and fulfil their greatest potential. Engaging with the arts brings great joy to our children, and I extend my best wishes for a successful DreamBIG Children’s Festival!

DreamBIG Children’s Festival 2019 is packed with inspiring, motivating experiences for you and your students. Our theme this year is People Together. In the words of Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” To work well together we must respect and enjoy our similarities and differences.

DreamBIG Children’s Festival provides many learning opportunities for young people and the diversity of our community is reflected in this year’s program and theme. The festival brings people together in a way only the arts can. Adelaide Festival Centre is a creative home for people of all ages and many young South Australians begin their lifelong journey with the arts through DreamBIG Children’s Festival. I congratulate and thank federal, state, and local governments and departments, sponsors and partners, Adelaide Festival Centre and venue staff, artists and participants, our wonderful team of volunteers, and the teachers and families who return again and again to celebrate and support creative programming for young people. I look forward to seeing you at the Big Family Weekend and throughout the festival.

One of this year’s focuses is empathy. It enables us to function in the world and we need to nurture it now more than ever. This year’s festival includes experiences to unite your students and expand their hearts and minds as they enter new worlds, trying on other people’s shoes. The 2019 festival is filled with dancing, dogs, gruffalos, robots, singing, birthdays, orchestras, fireflies, imagination, pandas, music, expeditions, opera, silent discos, writers, rice, a musical cubby town, and more! Enjoy looking through this program and selecting things for your students. They deserve the best we can offer. And I’m confident you’ll enjoy yourself as well!

The theme People Together brings arts and education people together to amplify participation and engagement in quality arts experiences for children and young people to encourage them to dream BIG! General Info How to Use this Guide This program lists all the school performances, workshops, activities, exhibitions, and events featured in the 2019 DreamBIG Children’s Festival. This includes paid and free activities, and those held at Adelaide Festival Centre and other venues, including state wide and in–school initiatives. You will find a complete calendar of events listed in the centrefold of this program, which will help you navigate the program by date and event type. There are also suggested itineraries overleaf to help you map out your festival experience for all age groups. A full list of festival venues including contact details can be found on page 43. Important booking information is located on page 44. It is important that you read this before completing the booking form on page 45. All performances and workshops must be booked via this form, unless stipulated otherwise. Access Services We want all children to feel comfortable across the entire festival so every DreamBIG performance is welcoming. Auslan and Audio Description options are available. DreamBIG Opening Event People Together This year’s event will be opened by 13-year-old Audrey Mason-Hyde, an impressive poet, actor, thinker and public speaker, who will speak to this year’s theme, People Together.

STATEWIDE Schools can choose to perform the Opening Event dance at their school assembly. Win $500 worth of art supplies by participating in DreamBIG 2019. See p37 for details. See p44 for detailed prices and times for the opening event.

We will then join the rest of Australia in a simultaneous reading of Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove for National Simultaneous Storytime. If you can’t make the event, find out how your students can join #1millionkids reading on p37. Next, students will become The Mighty Choir of Small Voices and sing the High School Musical hit ‘We’re All In This Together’ (practised in Term 1 as part of the Public Schools Music Festival Program). The event will finish with a high-energy gig by South Australian group Electric Fields, whose exuberant music perfectly embodies the festival theme. To launch DreamBIG 2019, students and teachers will perform a specially choreographed dance as they make their way across the footbridge for an afternoon of performances, workshops, exhibitions and other activities. Video of this easy to learn dance choreography will be available at dreambigfestival.com.au from 1 February 2019 for participating students and teachers to practise along with their singing in Term 1! 4

Junkyard Beats in The Box Show Tag along with this bunch of musical misfits as they reinvigorate the junk that the world has forgotten. In the hands of Junkyard Beats, ordinary household items are transformed into extraordinary musical instruments and unwanted junk comes alive in surprising ways. An abandoned kitchen becomes the greatest drum set in the world, pipes produce eerie melodies, and wheelie bins suddenly get a whole new meaning. The Displaced

“The highlight of Adelaide Fringe.” Arts Hub

By Time in Space Circus In an increasingly disconnected, disjointed world, The Displaced asks us all to reach out and make meaningful connections with those around us. The Displaced uses new circus as a medium to encourage students to think and reflect about ideas of privilege, cultural conditioning and primal instincts. Featuring powerful images of separation, longing and ultimately reunion, the show demonstrates the ultimate paradox: that while we can be at arm’s reach from each other, we can be light years away from establishing any true emotional connection. The Displaced is from Time in Space, a group of young Adelaide-based artists whose aim is to inspire and encourage other young people to express their individuality and connect with themselves and others. 10

Responding to Racism invites audience members into the theatrical space to support the actors as they tackle the real and confronting problem of racism.

Using stories, songs, dance and puppetry, Like Me, Like You introduces younger students to the idea of diversity in our communities, including themes of inclusion, understanding and acceptance.

Responding to Racism is an award winning interactive theatre performance that follows the story of Mik, a young Aboriginal student putting up with constant racism from his friend and football teammate Chris. Meanwhile, a new student has arrived at school, Sophia, who is stereotyped and discriminated against for wearing a headscarf. Developed by South Australian theatre company ActNow, in partnership with Reconciliation SA, Responding to Racism aims to identify, respond to and prevent racism, exploring its effects and offering prevention strategies. By Stan's Cafe Direct from the UK, this provocative installation uses grains of rice to bring abstract statistics to startling and powerful life. A team of performers weighs out quantities of rice to represent a host of human statistics: • populations of towns and cities • number of doctors and number of soldiers • number of people born each day and number who die • number of people who have walked on the moon • number of deaths in the Holocaust Adapting to the country, city or venue in which it’s performed, students are invited to send in the statistics they would like to see represented and some of these will feature during the festival. Witty, at times shocking, and always thought provoking, this ever changing landscape of rice will engage students of all ages, causing them to reflect on their own place in the world.

Panda's Home By Compagnie TPO and TONG Productions Traditional Chinese culture meets digital technology from Italy in this international collaboration that proves there are no barriers to global understanding. Step into a kaleidoscope of colour, sounds and imagery set against the soundtrack of traditional Chinese instruments in Panda’s Home. Students will join two dancers alongside a zitar player on this unique, and immersive adventure through the rich cultural landscape of China. On their travels they’ll encounter bamboo forests and ancient traditions as they learn about the Chinese concept of Wu Xing (“Five Elements”) - wood, fire, earth, metal and water – and the harmonious cycle of nature. Italy’s Compagnie TPO creates interactive theatrical spaces using sensors and digital technology. That technology combined with TONG Productions’ beautiful storytelling results in a performance that goes beyond language and cultural barriers.

The Boy Who Loved Tiny Things By Zoë Barry, Drop Bear Theatre & The Seam There was a boy. The boy who loved tiny things. He would like to show you some of his collection… The Boy Who Loved Tiny Things is a unique participatory theatre work that celebrates wonder, curiosity, care taking and story making. Students are invited to go on a journey together, to take time to slow down and notice, play and share, as they explore the South Australian Museum and contribute to an enormous collection of precious tiny things nestled within The Armoury. This delightful experience teaches us all to stop and take notice of what is around us – no matter how small.

Firefly Forest By Patch Theatre

When the stage hit War Horse was preparing to make its way to Australia, the story's author asked his good friend Morris Gleitzman to write a performance script about Australian horses in WWI, linking it with the play. This is that story.

Australian Children’s Laureate Morris Gleitzman is undisputedly one of Australia’s top writers for young people. DreamBIG is delighted to present an Adelaide actor reading Morris’ monologue, Loyal Creatures, followed by a talk and Q&A with the author. Students will gain a unique insight into the creation of this moving work, and the novel that grew out of it, telling the story of the bond between a boy and his horse, and the unpredictability and horror of war. Cunning Little Vixen Step inside the magical world of opera with this delightful production based on the story of a clever little fox and his friends DreamBIG is thrilled to include a performance of State Opera of South Australia’s Cunning Little Vixen in 2019. Based on Leoš Janáček’s illustrated story published in a Brno newspaper in the Czech Republic in 1920, Cunning Little Vixen is an enchanting adventure story that examines the cycle of life and the connection between humans and animals. Moravian folk music and rhythms fill the air as this superb production unfolds and children are gently introduced to the magical and moving world of opera.

10 Minute Dance Parties By Joseph O'Farrell (JOF) Students have the opportunity to experience the shipping container dance phenomenon that has delighted audiences across Australia and the UK. 10 Minute Dance Parties is an interactive dance party like no other. Enter the converted shipping container and experience an explosion of sound, colour, light and art. With student DJâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (who the artist has trained in advance) no two parties are the same. This is a positive and reaffirming experience that proves the power of music to lift the spirits, motivate the mind and bring people together. DreamBIG is delighted to be collaborating with Playford City Council and Northern Sound System to present this event. JOF will create the work with young people from the northern suburbs, providing them with skills in DJ-ing, music production and facilitation to support and lead the dance parties. By Joshua Monten Dance A 20 minute dance performance in which order and precision give way to chaos, havoc and a whole lot of mess. Game Theory begins simply enough – two men draw chalk squares on the ground and start playing a game of hopscotch. It’s all very structured, repetitive and civilised. Then things begin to change shape – the basic geometries and rhythms fracture and multiply as the movement becomes increasingly complicated and physically demanding. Students will be transfixed as this energetic dance and body percussion mash-up evolves bit by bit into a frenetic journey around the world, ending in a haze of hyperactive havoc. See why Game Theory has been performed at the best festivals across Europe, Latin America and the Palestinian Territories.

Taking comfort in her scientific heroes and imaginary friends Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton, Nameless sets out on a journey of the imagination to find strength in her differences and confidence in herself. Playable CubbyTOWN Modern technology meets old fashioned storytelling in this interactive cubby house experience bursting with sights and sounds. We love our CubbyTOWN and this festival Playable Streets and our resident designer Ali Jones are bringing it to life with a magnificent interactive installation direct from the imaginations of children. Step inside this larger than life storybook, and explore and touch paintings to hear the sounds of this strange and wonderful world. Developed in collaboration with students from Adelaide schools, this work uses bespoke technology developed by Playable Streets to turn their stories into an audio adventure. Students will discover new sounds and stories everywhere they turn in this unique and interactive experience.

Phil Cummings: Stories Behind the Books This is an interactive exhibition with an access all areas pass into the creative mind of awardwinning South Australian author Phil Cummings. From his first book, Goodness Gracious! to his latest award-winning picture book, Boy, Phil’s career has spanned 30 years and more than 60 publications. He continues to enchant, entertain and engage young readers today. Co-designed with children from Peterborough, this interactive exhibition and associated schools programs will delight kids of all ages. Exhibition Compiled from the State Library collections as well as Phil’s personal materials and manuscripts, this exhibition is a rare opportunity to discover the secrets and stories behind Phil’s approach to the creative process of writing.

Explore notions of identity, connection and inclusion – whilst making public artworks. This is an exciting opportunity for a whole class to work with an artist in residence at their school. During Term 1 2019, the selected class will work with artist and poet Elyas Alavi to build connections with one another and their community through visual arts workshops, focusing on the theme ‘identity’ (particularly connection and inclusion). Students will be introduced to painting techniques and, using recycled materials such as plastic and cardboard, will create colourful flags and bunting to adorn Adelaide Festival Centre’s Walk of Fame during DreamBIG.

Once there was a little girl who loved to dance. She was always entertaining people with her incredible moves. Then she grew up and thought people didn’t want to see her dance any more. So she only danced when no one was watching. But that all changed when she found herself dancing in Rundle Mall one day – it was AMAZING. She realised that much better than dancing like no one is watching is dancing like EVERYONE is watching. Fun and connectivity is at the core of this sensational dance session from dancer and choreographer Liz Cahalan, which is set in the majestic Freemasons Main Hall. It will also feature a professional symposium to facilitate the exchange of ideas among practitioners making work with young people. Companies involved include Cirkidz, Prospect Theatre for Young People, True North Youth Theatre Ensemble, Adelaide High Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Running with Scissors Theatre Company, SAYarts, Australian Theatre for Young People, Carclew, and others. Co-Investigators of Creativity By Lovelands and Australian Science and Mathmatics School Learn how the arts are a powerful tool for changing the brain (neuroplasticity), as well as promoting mental health, wellbeing and developing a sense of community.

An Anthology of Un-Kept Secrets is a book of real, living feelings, revealed and written by young people and curated by award winning playwright Sally Hardy. In the months leading up to DreamBIG, Sally will hold creative workshops in metro and regional schools, where students will be invited to uncover the feelings they think no one else would understand. These will become part of An Anthology of Un-Kept Secrets, which will be on display throughout DreamBIG. Students will be able to leaf through this book, discovering the secret feelings of people their own age. It will provide young readers with a powerful insight into the love, fears, hopes and humour that lies within us all no matter how different we may appear to be.

This fascinating workshop endeavours to make the invisible visible, integrating the tools of neuroscience and the arts to explore the five pillars of SAHMRI’s positive psychology research, PERMA (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment). Year 10, 11 and 12 students from the Australian Science and Mathematics School (ASMS) will spend Term 1 working with teaching artists Eliza Lovell and Kerrin Rowlands to develop the workshop. Same Like Yesterday Virlkuthalypila and Other Stories from Our Country This colourfully animated visual performance sees six Adnyamathanha women share stories of their ancestors and the memories of growing up on their country. Same Like Yesterday is a story about six senior Adnyamathanha women and two teenage girls travelling through the Flinders Ranges in the footsteps of Virlkuthalypila, the two women from the Yuramuda (Dreamtime). Their country is woven together by an endless thread of stories. They are embedded in the land, the sky, the water, and the mountains. Even the animals hold stories from a long time ago. By following the journey of the two women, students will learn to stay safe and respect sacred sites and to help everyone gain a greater appreciation of Adnyamathanha history and culture. This work is a collaboration between women and children of the Adnyamathanha community and the Sharing Stories Foundation which works with Indigenous communities to protect, maintain and grow language, stories and cultural heritage through digital technologies and artistic forms for this and future generations. 36
