South Australia’s celebrated children’s festival has been delighting students and families for nearly 50 years. Since 1974, more than 2 million children from across the state have participated.
Of all the festivals in Adelaide Festival Centre’s proud portfolio, DreamBIG Children’s Festival perhaps invokes the most longlasting possibilities because it connects with children at an inquisitive time, inspiring lifelong engagement with cultures and learning.
South Australian children, like others around the world, have had a difficult time of it this year. Supported by their families and educators, I applaud their resilience. I know it hasn’t been easy. Students and teachers wait and look forward to DreamBIG Children’s Festival every two years and I am excited to see how the 2021 festival will contribute to their learning, discovery, and joy. Curiosity is key to innovation and growth. Now, more than ever, it is the inquisitive spirit across science, technology engineering, arts, and maths that will deliver developments and discoveries, and the continued success of our state for generations to come. I congratulate the teams at Adelaide Festival Centre and the Department for Education on this wonderful program of events. Thank you for your commitment to the children of South Australia and to their teachers. My sincere wishes for a successful, special festival.
As South Australia deals with and recovers from the impact of COVID-19, the arts are more important than ever. It’s fitting that this beloved festival is early in the 2021 calendar – and we hope it will be the first of many to return in full force next year. This year especially, I thank festival sponsors and partners; federal, state, and local governments and departments; Adelaide Festival Centre and venue staff; schools; volunteers; artists; participants; teachers; and families for their ongoing support and commitment to creative programming for young people. Congratulations to everyone involved in this inspiring and hopeful program. Adelaide Festival Centre values our important role bringing communities together and we look forward to welcoming students, teachers, and families to DreamBIG Children’s Festival in 2021.
Sweeney
How can we help young people navigate this strange new world that 2020 has delivered? By fostering our shared sense of humanity and curiosity. Humanity reveals our ability to love and have compassion. Curiosity drives our desire to ask questions about things we don’t understand. Both are intrinsic to the arts and sciences. Engendering empathy and curiosity in young people sets them on a great path! In this vein I offer you the wise words of our poster winner Phitchapha Ritnayom (Yr 6) – ‘Being an artist means being curious. When you’re curious you observe new ideas and see new worlds. I drew a picture about aliens who heard about DreamBIG Festival and they were curious to see what it is all about. They are inquisitive just like me and want to be part of this great event.” I say YES to that! I invite you and your students to explore DreamBIG 21, full of experiences that will stretch the students’ minds, fill them with wonder and help them find their inner explorer.
Schell
What sort of things can we be curious about? How about new, novel, different, attractive, pleasing, exciting, frightening, thrilling, scary, relevant, useful, or seemingly impossible things? DreamBIG Festival 2021 has it all! Watch a performance. Pose for the statewide project ‘One Minute Sculptures’. Access a touring program, online interactive performance or workshop. Focus on a workshop. Become absorbed in an exhibition. There’s something for everyone. How does an artist, performer or audience demonstrate their curiosity? If you can, hold your May 2021 staff meeting at the keynote address, ‘Curious Bots’ by Dr Catriona Wallace with Trinity the Robot. Can robots be curious? What role will Artificial Intelligence play in arts and education? Please use this Schools Program and Teachers Resource to start planning 2021 learning programs now. Nurture your students to be curious and join in on a creative journey to discover all those things that induce wonder, awe and delight!

A lo-fi wi-fi fable
By Trick of Light Theatre (New Zealand)

It’s 1998. Otto is twelve but online he’s thirteen and he’s pretty sure he gets away with it. He lives in an old wooden house with his mum, dad and sister, a mysterious Icelandic granny and an ancient malevolent troll that’s started living in the wall... From the award-winning Trick of Light Theatre (makers of The Bookbinder and The Road that Wasn’t There) comes a lo-fi, wi-fi fable in the vein of Stranger Things. Tröll combines storytelling, music and puppetry in an uncanny tale from the twitchy edges of the digital age.

“We Come from Far, Far Away communicates the refugee experience by immersing us in it... told with humor, energy and hope using live music, puppets and storytelling.” CHILDREN’S THEATRE REVIEW
This work was developed with Hvalstad Transittmottak, an Asylum Centre providing a first reception point for refugees aged 13 – 18 who arrive alone in Norway. The performance unlocks the opportunity for dialogue between students, children and families about children who are forced to flee alone. Presented in the immersive and intimate setting of a Mongolian yurt, We Come from Far, Far Away uses live music, storytelling, clowning and shadow puppetry to engage, entertain and say something big.

In this extra-special version of the classic game, students are invited to draw the head, legs or torso of a creature from their imaginations, each on individual screens. Meanwhile, the newly-formed monster is revealed in awe-inspiring largeness – sometimes scary, sometimes comical – looming high up over the crowd. The possibilities are infinite!

Workshop and Exhibition

What could life be like for animals – including human animals – living together in your city? In different cities around the world, adaptations are already taking place to include animals and improve the quality of living in our urban eco-systems. These inspiring examples form the basis of a creative learning workshop where children work together to imagine and build their very own Wild City.
Adding to the sculptural building blocks of a city, children explore ideas and create the habitat and infrastructure to welcome wild animals as citizens in their urban landscape. The end result is a collaborative exhibition, on display in the South Australian Museum throughout DreamBIG 2021, that investigates environmental issues and inspires solutions.

Leo and Abbie aren’t ordinary kids, they’re Turners – a secret species that morphs from human to animal – and now they’ve found themselves at the centre of a global plot to annihilate their kind... You are the hero in this interactive narrative adventure based on Mick Elliott’s hilarious book series The Turners. Audioplay is the brand-new audio experience that lets kids step into the story and be the characters that they love, complete with a blockbuster soundtrack. With your headphones on, you play the characters in this action-packed journey. But be warned – being a Turner is hectic. One minute you’re hanging with your sister, the next you’ve been taken hostage by half-snake, half-human creatures. Things are getting wild!

“SAYarts are known for putting on good quality and thought-provoking shows...” BROADWAY WORLD
Emily thinks the water tastes different these days. Lorcan’s noticed it takes ten minutes longer to walk home. Ruth has suddenly fallen in love with Alex. And Alex suspects the birds are watching him. Being a conspiracy theorist means everything that once seemed certain, now feels weird. And being fifteen means, well pretty much the same thing. Over the course of one strange week, a group of young people try to navigate the space between what they are told, and what they are, to answer the question – what is real?

Hunter and Alex break into school at night – the teachers all think they’re trouble anyway, so they might as well make the most of it, right? But Scribble and Z are also on their way, and AlanaRey and JJ have plans of their own...
When we talk about mental health, we usually focus on the problems. We tune in to all of the negative aspects. But what if we switched the script to focus on what creates positive mental health instead?
Following its February performance season, this high-drama radio play focusses on one pair of teenagers who choose the same night as their friends to make sacrifices for the people they love, prove friendships and exact revenge.
Mental is a play specifically designed to facilitate this important conversation between young people. It explores the things that help us feel happy and connected to place, to each other and to ourselves.

Grab a camera, a household object and strike a pose! Erwin Wurm is an Austrian artist known for his witty style and curious depictions of daily life. His One Minute Sculptures feature strangers posing with everyday objects in unusual, often illogical ways.
EXHIBITION We invite schools to create short digital artworks around the theme of Be Curious to be displayed on the outdoor digital screens at Adelaide Festival Centre during DreamBIG 2021.
The object can be almost anything – a chair, fruit or a school bag. Alternatively, you could choose a theme based on any topic studied in class. Students pose in freeze-frame with their object while a photo is taken. The more bizarre, the better!

All schools are invited to submit their collection of One Minute Sculptures for presentation online as part of DreamBIG 2021. Submit images via dreambig@adelaidefestival centre.com.au with the subject ‘One Minute Sculptures’ by 30 April 2021.

Hidden Treasures Lobethal Community Mapping Project By Fabrik Arts + Heritage
Look through the lens of positivity as you experience the community mapping project of Lobethal Primary School students and local seniors.
Venture into the exciting world of art and ideas with a self-guided tour of current exhibitions and collection highlights.
This artist-led project, developed as part of Fabrik’s Creative Recovery program, brings together people, memories and hopes for the future as the Lobethal community reimagines their future and celebrates their resilience after the 2020 fires.
There’s no better way to appreciate the detail in a painting, or the scale of a sculpture, than by visiting the work itself. Works of art are ideal platforms to talk about our collective history while simultaneously exploring what is happening in the world today.
Discover the ‘Treasure Map of Lobethal’ including stories, drawings and photographs that lead to interactive mapping activities for your schools to engage with.
For a learning experience beyond the classroom, plan and book your school visit at agsa.sa.gov.au/education.

The Final Quarter
Developing Effective Arts Learning (DEAL)
By Ian Darling
DEAL is a professional learning program for primary teachers in IoED category 1 – 4 government schools.
Adam Goodes, known for his AFL career and Indigenous activism, features in this film that revisits the debate about his personal and professional life.
It employs the expertise of professional teaching artists to work in collaboration with teachers, addressing the opportunities and challenges presented by the Australian Curriculum: The Arts.
During his time on the football field he was twice awarded a Brownlow Medal, was twice a premiership player and played 372 games, while off the field he was named Australian of the Year. However the end of his football career was marred by controversy, receiving heavy scrutiny by football fans and the Australian media. The documentary ignites the discussion about Australian identity and race relations and is a timely piece asking viewers to reconsider the treatment of a man playing the sport he loves for the people who revere it.
Applying an artist’s analytical techniques and explorative approaches to the arts curriculum, DEAL will provide teachers with fresh perspectives around problem solving and inquiry-based learning, leading to intrinsic benefits for students in the arts and other areas of the curriculum. Carclew invite schools interested in participating in the 2021 DEAL program to get in touch to discuss your specific needs.

Our Stories
Co-Investigators
of Curiosity
For many thousands of years, Australia’s First Nations people have been telling stories through dance, song, paintings, carvings, tools and spoken word – often around the campfire.
By ASMS, Eliza Lovell and Kerrin Rowlands
The team behind Co-Investigators of Creativity return to DreamBIG with an entirely new collection of curious experiments and interactive workshops.
These stories speak to the geography, value systems and cultural protocols of the country and people they belong to. But as we move toward more urban lifestyles, how will traditional storytelling be preserved?
Get your lab coats and notebooks at the ready for your primary students to join forces as the Co-Investigators of Curiosity – without ever leaving the classroom!
Take your seat around the proverbial campfire and hear from local storytellers Uncle Mickey O’Brien, Aunty Stephanie Gollan and Ema Bovoro. Plus check out an additional 16-min illustration workshop by Karen Briggs.
These online-based explorations will be guided by secondary students from Adelaide’s Australian Science and Math School (ASMS) along with teaching artists Eliza Lovell and Kerrin Rowlands. The possibilities will be as endless as your curiosity!
Recorded and presented online, this important new work provides a special opportunity for young people to be immersed in their stories and share in First Nations culture and language.

Songs
Winner of a Best Dance award at Adelaide Fringe 2019, and with a tour to Reykjavik, Edinburgh and Stockholm, FEMME is one woman’s search for self in a world of gender and sexual conditioning.
By Vonda Last Arranged by Vonda Last and Julian Ferraretto
This new collection of original and unrecorded songs, performed in English and Ngaanyatjarra, is inspired by the stories, knowledge and memories of Aboriginal grandmothers and Elders.
FEMME explores concepts of femininity and female sexuality, the female body, the gender roles we conform to – or break against – and what it means to be powerful in a largely masculine dominant culture.
